A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thanks I thought Mane was 9.5 just checked after your comment to see he is 9.0
Another option I think Firmino will come good though.

Gotcha. Yes, Mane's 9.0. I think it's going to be splitting hairs across the 'Pool midfielders this year (and that includes Lallana). For me, Mane's explosiveness and the fact that I see his place in the formation - on the right side - never changing, just edges it out for me.

Hmmm. Your other attackers are all in fine shape (though I don't love Townsend or his fixture this week). There really isn't any need to panic. If you get antsy, the most prudent move might actually be Mikh to Martial, with a Pool midfielder (Mane for me) or Payet (if he plays, and plays well, tomorrow) also decent options.

Why not wait until next week? Redmond is away at ManU, so there's no rush there. The additional week might change your mind - Vardy could get hot, someone else might get injured, etc.

Yeah, Vardy to Ibra would be to cover Ibra's ownership, and a couple of people in my mini league. I'm more concerned about Cazorla's game time, and if he will start on the bench most of the time - 30 minute cameos or Capoue replacing him in the team is not a good strategy

Happy enough atm to be owning him.
He will always be a serious threat in a team that is surely going to be top 3!

Really hard to decide on a transfer this week.

Vardy > ??? Just wasnt his day, could of had a few goals, no pens is a big loss but would expect to be fired up for Arsenal who will still be short at the back.

Gray > Negrado Former had 4 shots while the latter had 1. Expect him to be in the points if Burnley score, Negrado probably better fixtures but did he look good enough to jump on?

Erikson > Lamela Saves me 1.5 million, whole spurs team looked sluggish, would want to see Lamela be more consistant before getting him in. Would expect Erikson to be in the points once they improve.

Firmino > Coutinho/Mane 4 goals and no invlvement. Didnt see the game so cant judge, Liverpool will score lots of goals and points will be shared. Could see myself swapping only for Firmino to get the points next week and the others blanking.

Soooo, might save for now and assess another week, Ibra in for Hull looking a good option. How important is it to jump on an early price riser now though?

Price rise only important if they kick on again next week. Then they are already more expensive. What was the story with the Vardy fresh air shot. Was it a bobble?

Have a few of these dilemmas myself as a Vardy, Gray, Firmino owner. Inclined to leave them another week, the sample is pretty small still.

Regarding Spurs mid - I'm a Spurs fan so I was saying this pre-season (without bias of course) and I'll keep saying it now: Lamela has looked great for awhile now (end of last season, pre-season, first game). Eriksen on the other hand has been out of sorts. That's a transfer I would make.

Would agree here. Have Lamela going to hold Gray and actually considering getting Firmino in.

In the same boat with those three. I also have Fischer who didn't play. May play 4-4-2 to cover Fischer this week and then use 2 FT the week after.

        Thanks for the reply 🙂

Good to hear that about spurs, Erikson > Lamela might be the transfer then, is he nailed though?

One of the first names on the team sheet these days I assure you.

Well - this is perhaps a slight exaggeration but the core of team is very settled, at least whilst there is no Champion's League on.

Stick. Those that performed this week probably won't next week.

Jumping on price rises/avoiding price drops is quite important since one point either way is the equivalent of +/- 0.5. However, there looks like there could be some bargains again this year, and if more transfers are required to change prices (as seems the case the last couple of seasons), then building team value may not be that important at all.

I'm sticking with Vardy for one more game at least. Can see him turning into his old self vs that woeful Arsenal defense.

Didn't we say that with Chelsea last season... and they never did

Some did. I ditched my Chelsea assets pretty early on as WCed GW 3. I think it's as important to not ditch too early as it is to not cling on for too long.

Id wait at least 3 GW to make any decisions on Vardy

What are you guys doing about Sanchez? Definitely going to keep him this week but if he looks as clueless as he did yesterday will transfer him out to Hazard in gw3

Wait till next week. With Ozil Kosc and Giroud back Sanchez might play better.

Do you think Lamela and Redmond are the real deal, or did they have a lucky game

      Both seem the real deal.

I think Lamela could be the highest scoring Spurs mid this year - and have thought that for months.

I still think Tadic is the best Southampton mid, but the price difference makes Redmond attractive.
