A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Sticking with Firmino. One game in doesn't tell the whole story. Arsenal were terrible and their defence is shot to pieces. I also thought Firmino looked good in the game so this all sounds way to knee jerky for me.

"I like the spirit of Diego because he always shows a great passion and I'm the same," Conte said. "He doesn't want to lose and I like this passion. I want to put this passion into the team.

"I think it's important to have passion for your work, for football, and this passion helps you to overcome difficulty. I like this passion, this commitment, this work for the team. I demand this from him.

"I'm happy that Diego stays here to work with us. We know that he can improve through work, and the most important thing is the players put themselves into this idea. I hope to continue in this way."

Asked whether he has set Costa a target of at least 20 goals this season, a smiling Conte replied: "Why 20 and not 30?

"No, never [set goal targets]. I ask him and all my players for a great attitude and great commitment. Then the goals will be right, I'm sure. It's important that a player when we play plays our football, not his football.

"He is a forward and he knows that in my idea of football, a forward must give always a point of reference for the team. I don't like my forwards to move around the pitch, I like them to stay there, because you are a forward and your commitment is to score the goal, to stay in the right position. You are a forward, not a defender."

Costa may be the pick of the 2nd striker if that's how it is.

Could easily have an Aguero, Costa, Rooney forward line. Not sure how good a pick the latter will be, but could cover some of Ibra's points.

      1. Grand Thibauto
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

That's what I'm after anyway. To cover Ibra's point. Saving 2, may not be the better player, but certainly Costa is at his peak. Its a make or break season for him. Could swap him out with two FT for Kane anyway. I prefer having a slightly cheaper option for the third striker for now. But Aguero, Costa, Lukaku/Rooney may be solid at one point.

Good price. If he was around 11m I wouldn't touch him due to his hatred for bps and constant risk of suspension/injury

      1. Grand Thibauto
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

I wouldn't touch him for 10.5 even for his yellow card getting attitude. But bottomline is, he is a scorer. And with so many creative outlets, don't see why he wont.

Probably how Mourinho used him to cover a lot. He is more of a defensive forward than it seems. Even in Football Manager, he has full suitability for Defensive forward. Two bars less for other positions iirc.

Got Firmino already - not kneeing him out by any means. Considering a double up if they continue as they started, but with Kun and Ibra upfront there is little room to maneuver in my mids! Most likely would be Mane for me - that goal was incredible and Danny Murphy said he was MOM (Danny knows). Sorry to go off on a tangent but my more pressing sense is that Martial is going to be amazing this year - he could very easily outscore Mahrez. I'd probably rather switcharoo to get Martial in to double up with Ibra than another Liverpool mid to double up with Firmino.

I have him too. Another day could have had something. Tempted double up pool mids tbh, as oppose to ship him out.

I was watching the United match with my housemate who's a big United supporter and I was cheering on Ibra to score a hatful, but also wanted one tiny goal from Bournemouth, celebrated right in front of him when Smith scored 😆 he was not best pleased 😛

A terrible start - 25 points. But with Hazard, Carroll and Ayew to go tonight.

No money ITB. Stay calm and save FT?

    Forster.
    Valencia. Amat. Williams.
    Tadic. Ayew. Hazard. Eriksen.
    Carroll. Aguero. Vardy.

    Bench; Jakupovic. Friend. Souare. Watson

Pretty happy with my 57 points with Carroll still to play. But i did bench 20 points still.

Not sure if to keep my free transfer or replace Morgan as Leicesters defence looked poor in pre season, and poor again saturday against Hull. (Couldn't look past the fixture)

Best 5.5 or cheaper defender? Current defence.

    DDG/Jaku
    Stones, Friend, Evans, Souare, Morgan

    I was thinking Terry?
