With the experiment of using Michail Antonio as a right-back proving unsuccessful, West Ham announced the deadline day signing of former Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old has joined on a one-year deal, and speaking to the club’s official website, explained his reasons for making to move back to England:

“For me, this is a great chance to be back in England and in the Premier League, which is a fantastic league and I want to put myself in the Premier League again. This is a big club and a great club with good players and a fantastic coach… I need two or three weeks to be really fit because I have been training on my own, which is different. You can see I feel really, really well and I’m excited to play for this team. I have been training and I feel ready.”

The History

Arbeloa started his youth career with Zaragoza, before linking up with Real Madrid at the age of 18. The defender struggled to make the grade at Real, only managing two first-team appearances before joining Deportivo La Coruna in July 2006.

After just six months with Depor, making 20 league appearances, Arbeloa joined Liverpool in January 2007. He enjoyed a successful spell at Anfield over the next two-and-a-half years, making 98 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and registering six assists.

Having gained plenty of top-level experience during his time on Merseyside, Arbeloa returned to Real Madrid in July 2009.

Over the following few years, he was an important member of the first-team squad, playing mainly as a right-back, although he also featured several times at left-back.

First-team opportunities were limited over the past few seasons, though, and, in 2015/16, the defender was afforded just six league appearances. During his second spell at Real, Arbeloa made 236 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing 14 assists.

After representing Spain at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, making seven appearances in total, Arbeloa was given his senior debut against Italy in March 2008. He was a member of the Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 winning squads, and in total played 58 times for his country, registering four assists.

The Prospects

Discussing the new arrival with the Hammers website, co-owner David Sullivan issued handy confirmation that the acquisition of Arbeloa means that, after scoring in each of the last two Gameweeks, Michail Antonio will no longer be utilised as a defender:

“Before the Deadline Day on Wednesday we had an unbalanced squad and we needed to change a few things around. The decision has now been made that Michail Antonio will play as a winger after originally starting the season as a right-back. As a result we had to move out a winger (Enner Valencia), and have brought in a full-back to compete with and help Sam Byram. We explored all avenues and managed to secure the signature of one of the more experienced full-backs in the world and one with Premier League experience.”

Essentially, that is the main point of note from Arbeloa’s arrival – Antonio is now freed up to play in the final third on a permanent basis, affording us an excellent option in the mid-price bracket at 7.0.

Whilst Dimitri Payet is the most nailed-on Hammers’ attacker, it’s worth noting that Antonio has started every league match since being named in the first XI in Gameweek 16 last season and is clearly a favourite of Bilic’s.

Granted, the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Sofiane Feghouli, Gokhan Tore and Andre Ayew – once fit – will all offer strong competition for those attacking midfield positions. Although Ayew boasts a similar goal threat to Antonio, the former three have been anything but prolific during their careers.

A very favourable upcoming run of fixtures (WAT, wba, SOT, MID, cpl, SUN, eve, STO) could see the Hammers profit at both ends of the pitch.

At the back, James Collins (4.6) and Byram (4.5) currently offer cheaper routes into the Hammers defence, and with Arbeloa valued at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers will be hoping the former Leeds defender remains Bilic’s first choice option.

Nonetheless, Byram has occasionally found the step up from the Championship a difficult one, and once Arbeloa gets his fitness up to scratch, Bilic could turn to the Spaniard’s experience if he still has the legs to deal with the rigours of the Premier League.

Collins, meanwhile, has started all three Premier League matches so far and scored against Chelsea but Bilic’s decision to move to three at the back against City allowed Angelo Ogbonna a first start of the season. Although the Welshman remains favourite to retain his start, Winston Reid is arguably the most secure pick, albeit at a slightly higher cost of 5.0.

        Foster (Jaku)
        Valencia, Friend, Stones (Souare, Amat)
Sanchez, Hazard (c), Tadic, Ramirez (Capoue)
        Kun, Vardy, Gray

        2 FT's 0 ITB.

        A - Kun & Tadic > Kane & Payet.
        B - Kun & Tadic > Ibra & Antonio.
C - Kun, Tadic & Vardy > Ibra, Kane & Antonio for. -4 (majority taking a hit or even WC this week to spread Kun cash so no real drama and chance to bring in not only the near essential Ibra but also Kane as major diff with great fixtures coming up and Dembele prob back next week, can see him scoring big real soon!!).
        D - Kun & Ramirez > Lukaku & Payet.

        Thoughts much appreciated...thanks.

More like Ozil impacts Cazorla's prospects.

Cazorla's role will diminish with Oz, Alexis, Giroud, Walcott and Perez back and ready to take over AM.

Wouldn't be too fast saying Lamela is first choice over Sissoko. I think the opposite as Sissoko is more direct which Poch wanted. I think Siss is first choice with Lamela seeing some games.

I don't buy that. Lamela has been our strongest player this season. He also had 9 goals and 11 assists last season so not sure where the "based on previous seasons" comes from. Only been getting better. There will be competition, but unless Alli picks it up, I see him riding the bench more than Lamela.

But been their best attacker so far this season by a long way. Poch seems to love him too. Think there are others under more threat before him.

Yeah but best when everyone else is underperforming a lot, so yeah with everyone fit and firing id expect the same 11 as last year with maybe Wanyama in for Dier or Sissoko in for Lamela

Spurs have been garbage so not difficult. Poch has benched him loads and the other mids are a lot better than him in real life. Sissoko has just been bought. Pamela will be dropped eventually. If not he will get restricted gametime.

Torn over whether to do Kone to Souares and whilst Hull have impressed me so far defensively this season, whether to keep Robertson over someone else.

I have Kone and am keeping for now. I expect us (Sunderland) to tighten up defensively now due to a few factors - Manquillo/Papy bedding in, Kirchoff coming back, Kone's 'distractions' hopefully disappearing til January. Maybe I'm biased, but I see no reason to think we'll be any leakier than Palace (3 home games in next 4), plus Kone is much more of a goal threat than Souare.

i think Kone is top, but he will be going to AFCON with Senegal so will be lost for an extended period of time
                        in January- Feb (i think).

i think Friend (MID) and Robertson (HUL) rotate well.

Adam Smith (BOU) is a good player and seems nailed, but i worry about Francis moving over to right back is someone like Marc Wilson plays.

Holebas (WAT) has been playing well, but they have a ton of wingbacks.

Think I've got my draft ready on WC team:

                      Foster-Pickford

                      Valencia-Bellerin-Williams-Collins-Amat

                      Hazard-Sanchez-Stirling-Antonio-Capoue

                      Ibra-Lukaku-Diamond

Probably going 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 depending on GW

I would downgrade sterling to snodgrass
That gives you the Banes option with Bellerin and Valencia
Third striker can be Benteke too.ie.more balance

Want to shift Pieters to another 4.5 defender - which dazzling prospect would you recommend? (Already have Valencia, Collins, Evans and Amat) - cheers.

With the arrival of Mika who are people putting in as their second keeper? Are there any 4.0's worth having that won't drop to 3.9? Should I just stick with Pickford?

                                      That article's a week old you loonies. I don't think he's signing.

Like I say either way it doesn't matter as Pickford will be first choice. Fans have been calling for him to get a chance for ages and, whilst he made a mistake last week he has huge potential.

Where are you getting info that Mika signed? The deal fell through and we appealed but as far as I'm aware an answer hasn't been given. We've actually currently got an Italian keeper trial who seems more likely to sign. Either way Pickford will 100% be first choice.

my suspicion is that Pickford will keep the job. i wouldn't be surprised if even Mannone
                                    can't win the job back.

Pickford is a good young player.

                                    that's all conjecture, of course.

there's no doubt over at Hull, David Marshall will be #1 though.

WC potential. I'm unsure of Sterling & Antonio, feel like Firmino will be a better option?

Somehow through my tinkering ended up with the following front 7:

This game is all about getting on the ship before it sets sail, he played for France, transfer window is over and West Ham have good fixtures. His value is an issue but there's no reason why he can't be an amazing option for the next few gameweeks or so

Ozil is creator. He hasn't lost any set pieces. He will end up the highest assister like last year too

Quite a few of his assists were from set pieces.

Reckon it's hazard this year, Ozil isn't off them but he's not on them anymore either. Based on the evidence of the last match he will take the minority of set pieces. Not sure how much we can read into one match though!

We'll tighten up. We have brought in defensive reinforcements and have signed ndong who is a combative midfielder. Add to the fact that one of our best players is fit again, Jan Kirchoff, we've def got a better chance of clean sheets than we did first few games. Next couple fixtures still not great though.

Maybe get PvA in GW6 and yes he's worth the extra 0.5m imo. Saying that kone always looks a threat from set pieces so I don't mind him at 4.5m if you're penny pinching.

He'll probably get lots of 1s and 2s, and a decent amount of double-digit hauls.

It's not always easy to predict when defenders will score goals, though, so you might miss out on the odd decent score.

Definitely worth it, but whether he fits your team is another question entirely - especially when you could take Kone who, despite being less attacking, is .5 less.

If Giroud is nailed he might be the best Arsenal attacker to go for

                                                Heaton / Pickford
                                                Valencia / Baines / Evans / Pieters / Amat
                                                Hazard / Sanchez / Ozil / Antonio / Rodwell
                                                Ibra / Benteke / Negredo

WC team, 0.0 ITB (assuming pieters drop)... thoughts?

Could take Lukaku / Sterling / Capoue over Negredo / Sanchez / Capoue

A, but how long term is longer term?

Payet's a myth so far this season, and Antonio may end up flopping back to RB.

Ozil is consistent, Sanchez is streaky.

Any stats about how much Özil's affected by Cazorla?
In the 2 games Özil's played for Arsenal this season he looked like the main man on the picth, every pass being perfect and leading to a dangerous situation, but he's off set-pieces, which should affect his FPL potential :\

He's not off them completely, and we are basing this off only one match
