With the experiment of using Michail Antonio as a right-back proving unsuccessful, West Ham announced the deadline day signing of former Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old has joined on a one-year deal, and speaking to the club’s official website, explained his reasons for making to move back to England:

“For me, this is a great chance to be back in England and in the Premier League, which is a fantastic league and I want to put myself in the Premier League again. This is a big club and a great club with good players and a fantastic coach… I need two or three weeks to be really fit because I have been training on my own, which is different. You can see I feel really, really well and I’m excited to play for this team. I have been training and I feel ready.”

The History

Arbeloa started his youth career with Zaragoza, before linking up with Real Madrid at the age of 18. The defender struggled to make the grade at Real, only managing two first-team appearances before joining Deportivo La Coruna in July 2006.

After just six months with Depor, making 20 league appearances, Arbeloa joined Liverpool in January 2007. He enjoyed a successful spell at Anfield over the next two-and-a-half years, making 98 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and registering six assists.

Having gained plenty of top-level experience during his time on Merseyside, Arbeloa returned to Real Madrid in July 2009.

Over the following few years, he was an important member of the first-team squad, playing mainly as a right-back, although he also featured several times at left-back.

First-team opportunities were limited over the past few seasons, though, and, in 2015/16, the defender was afforded just six league appearances. During his second spell at Real, Arbeloa made 236 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing 14 assists.

After representing Spain at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, making seven appearances in total, Arbeloa was given his senior debut against Italy in March 2008. He was a member of the Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 winning squads, and in total played 58 times for his country, registering four assists.

The Prospects

Discussing the new arrival with the Hammers website, co-owner David Sullivan issued handy confirmation that the acquisition of Arbeloa means that, after scoring in each of the last two Gameweeks, Michail Antonio will no longer be utilised as a defender:

“Before the Deadline Day on Wednesday we had an unbalanced squad and we needed to change a few things around. The decision has now been made that Michail Antonio will play as a winger after originally starting the season as a right-back. As a result we had to move out a winger (Enner Valencia), and have brought in a full-back to compete with and help Sam Byram. We explored all avenues and managed to secure the signature of one of the more experienced full-backs in the world and one with Premier League experience.”

Essentially, that is the main point of note from Arbeloa’s arrival – Antonio is now freed up to play in the final third on a permanent basis, affording us an excellent option in the mid-price bracket at 7.0.

Whilst Dimitri Payet is the most nailed-on Hammers’ attacker, it’s worth noting that Antonio has started every league match since being named in the first XI in Gameweek 16 last season and is clearly a favourite of Bilic’s.

Granted, the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Sofiane Feghouli, Gokhan Tore and Andre Ayew – once fit – will all offer strong competition for those attacking midfield positions. Although Ayew boasts a similar goal threat to Antonio, the former three have been anything but prolific during their careers.

A very favourable upcoming run of fixtures (WAT, wba, SOT, MID, cpl, SUN, eve, STO) could see the Hammers profit at both ends of the pitch.

At the back, James Collins (4.6) and Byram (4.5) currently offer cheaper routes into the Hammers defence, and with Arbeloa valued at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers will be hoping the former Leeds defender remains Bilic’s first choice option.

Nonetheless, Byram has occasionally found the step up from the Championship a difficult one, and once Arbeloa gets his fitness up to scratch, Bilic could turn to the Spaniard’s experience if he still has the legs to deal with the rigours of the Premier League.

Collins, meanwhile, has started all three Premier League matches so far and scored against Chelsea but Bilic’s decision to move to three at the back against City allowed Angelo Ogbonna a first start of the season. Although the Welshman remains favourite to retain his start, Winston Reid is arguably the most secure pick, albeit at a slightly higher cost of 5.0.

Im so lost right now 🙁

Im thinking there is more value in a 5.0 def then similar priced forward and came up with this: Talk me out of it?

    Foster / Heaton

    Valencia / Williams / Walker / Collins / Evans

    Hazard / Ozil / Antonio / Sterling / Capou

    Ibra / Costa / Barrow

0,4 ITB to do Costa & Sterling -> Kun & Fer Maybe Kun aint comming back

Would you take a 4 point hit to sell Martial for and Arsenal mid, and if so, who would you go for?

    a) Ozil (makes it easy to get Aguero back in one move)
    b) Sanchez (makes it trickier to get Aguero back, might have to downgrade Sanchez to Ozil later anyway to do it.)

      Definitely worth it.

Sanchez is streaky so may make up your hit rapidly, but Ozil may end up lasting you the entire season. I'd go with A as you could get Kun back in easier.

Ozil is definitely the percentage play, the sensible move, the best long-term bet. Which means Sanchez will almost certainly get back to back braces!

Tottenham's fullbacks will go into their yearly rotation very soon when Champion's League starts.
figuring out who is playing when will be a nightmare, as it was last year.

if you are on WC, i recommend that you do not include Rose or Walker in your team.

Who did everyone ditch Aguero for?

Personally I can't see any worth bringing in bar Costa and I have him already.

The popular picks like Benteke and Bony surely need time, and the more elite options like Lukaku and Kane have no form in the league.

Personally I'm benching Aguero for 2 weeks and utilizing my bench.

    GW4: Capoue (whm)/ Friend (CRY)
    GW5: Williams (MID)/ Pieters (cry)

Means I don't have to account for 2 FTs when he's back.

You can argue I'll lose value, but that's only an issue if you plan on taking Aguero out down the line (which I can't see but for an injury)

I think maybe you're overthinking it, we're all guilty of it as non casuals. It's not hard for me to imagine Lukaku getting a lucky tap in and assist, or Benteke powering a header in or Kane getting off the mark with a penalty. Aguero almost certainly will get injured which is when the value lost would make a difference. Having said that it's possible your bench players would come through for you and deliver

                  Hazard (c), Antonio, Mane, Ozil
                  Vardy, Defoe, Benteke
Subs : Pickford, Williams, Amat, Capoue

Does it look good or any changes needed.

OK so I take back what I said last page. Mika transfer to Sunderland has just been approved by FIFA:

                    http://www.ojogo.pt/futebol/1a-liga/boavista/noticias/interior/mika-vai-mesmo-jogar-no-sunderland-5377200.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

You'll need to translate the page from Portuguese. Either way Pickford will continue as No.1 in goal.

Oh dang. How certain are you that he'll continue as number 1? As far as I'm aware Sunderland have a third choice keeper already which makes me wonder why they pushed so hard for Mika

We only have one senior keeper. Pickford. Stryjek is on the books as an u23s player. He's just been drafting in as cover given how short we are. I guess you could say currently he's third choice but with manonne injure we're relying on two very young goalkeepers. We needed to bring him some experience.

This Mika guy was bout our 10th choice on deadline day. No way he's been brought in as first choice and like I say Pickford is extremely highly rated, so he won't be hung out to dry just because of one mistake. Obviously if Pickford makes some more mistakes, or looks shaky next few games then that's a different choice. I have faith in him though so I don't think you need to worry at this stage.

Cheers dude, now that's an ffs quality answer! Only got Pickford at the start of the season because I knew he was so highly rated and thought at some stage in the season he might oust Mannone. Injury did the work for him, now he needs to keep his spot! Thanks again

I'm a bit worried though just because it's Moyes and he's notorious for not trusting youth. Like you say, he's highly rated though so...

Well it certainly gives us another option we didn't previously have. Mika is as much a threat to Pickford as Pickford was to Manonne. It's going to be a matter of form but Pickford will certainly be given a chance to make up for his mistake last week and prove how good he is. I'm 100% confident of that.

I agree but Moyes' post match interview was quite telling I thought. He didn't have much of a poker face on him put it that way.

Yeah that's a very good point. I picked up on that too. Guess it's up to pickford to prove his worth but maybe he won't get as many chances as what another manager might give him.

I'm WC and have 9.3m left to spend on a midfielder, will most likely be sold to get Kun back in, unless Ibra goes quiet. Already have Haz, Ozil, Puncheon, 4.5 with Ibra, Lukaku and Zaza up top. I'm thinking between a Liverpool and Spurs mid mainly. Thoughts?

Sterling imo, got a big haul against Bournemouth at home last year if I remember correctly?

                            On wildcard -
                            - Worth transferring Shaw out for another United defender in case he misses the derby, or keep him as best long term option?
                            - What are peoples' thoughts on Stones? Will he play ahead of Otamendi with Kompany back?

Season keeper is Shaw, have Valencia myself though. Stones will surely continue alongside Kompany, unless his form drops off severely

The tinkering has got to stop soon...thoughts on this WC team?

                              Pickford / Mandanda

                              Baines / Masauka / Holebas / Evans / Kone

                              Hazard / Ozil / Antonio / Firmino / Capoue

                              Ibra / Lukaku / Benteke

Thoughts on Giroud punt? Sterling over firmino?

Giroud could be a decent punt but if he doesn't hit the ground running could easily be dropped for Perez. Not sure about Holebas either, not 100% nailed and Watford don't look like keeping a lot of clean sheets.

Stoke or Bournemouth 4.5 a better idea vs holebas?
