With the experiment of using Michail Antonio as a right-back proving unsuccessful, West Ham announced the deadline day signing of former Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old has joined on a one-year deal, and speaking to the club’s official website, explained his reasons for making to move back to England:

“For me, this is a great chance to be back in England and in the Premier League, which is a fantastic league and I want to put myself in the Premier League again. This is a big club and a great club with good players and a fantastic coach… I need two or three weeks to be really fit because I have been training on my own, which is different. You can see I feel really, really well and I’m excited to play for this team. I have been training and I feel ready.”

The History

Arbeloa started his youth career with Zaragoza, before linking up with Real Madrid at the age of 18. The defender struggled to make the grade at Real, only managing two first-team appearances before joining Deportivo La Coruna in July 2006.

After just six months with Depor, making 20 league appearances, Arbeloa joined Liverpool in January 2007. He enjoyed a successful spell at Anfield over the next two-and-a-half years, making 98 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and registering six assists.

Having gained plenty of top-level experience during his time on Merseyside, Arbeloa returned to Real Madrid in July 2009.

Over the following few years, he was an important member of the first-team squad, playing mainly as a right-back, although he also featured several times at left-back.

First-team opportunities were limited over the past few seasons, though, and, in 2015/16, the defender was afforded just six league appearances. During his second spell at Real, Arbeloa made 236 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing 14 assists.

After representing Spain at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, making seven appearances in total, Arbeloa was given his senior debut against Italy in March 2008. He was a member of the Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 winning squads, and in total played 58 times for his country, registering four assists.

The Prospects

Discussing the new arrival with the Hammers website, co-owner David Sullivan issued handy confirmation that the acquisition of Arbeloa means that, after scoring in each of the last two Gameweeks, Michail Antonio will no longer be utilised as a defender:

“Before the Deadline Day on Wednesday we had an unbalanced squad and we needed to change a few things around. The decision has now been made that Michail Antonio will play as a winger after originally starting the season as a right-back. As a result we had to move out a winger (Enner Valencia), and have brought in a full-back to compete with and help Sam Byram. We explored all avenues and managed to secure the signature of one of the more experienced full-backs in the world and one with Premier League experience.”

Essentially, that is the main point of note from Arbeloa’s arrival – Antonio is now freed up to play in the final third on a permanent basis, affording us an excellent option in the mid-price bracket at 7.0.

Whilst Dimitri Payet is the most nailed-on Hammers’ attacker, it’s worth noting that Antonio has started every league match since being named in the first XI in Gameweek 16 last season and is clearly a favourite of Bilic’s.

Granted, the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Sofiane Feghouli, Gokhan Tore and Andre Ayew – once fit – will all offer strong competition for those attacking midfield positions. Although Ayew boasts a similar goal threat to Antonio, the former three have been anything but prolific during their careers.

A very favourable upcoming run of fixtures (WAT, wba, SOT, MID, cpl, SUN, eve, STO) could see the Hammers profit at both ends of the pitch.

At the back, James Collins (4.6) and Byram (4.5) currently offer cheaper routes into the Hammers defence, and with Arbeloa valued at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers will be hoping the former Leeds defender remains Bilic’s first choice option.

Nonetheless, Byram has occasionally found the step up from the Championship a difficult one, and once Arbeloa gets his fitness up to scratch, Bilic could turn to the Spaniard’s experience if he still has the legs to deal with the rigours of the Premier League.

Collins, meanwhile, has started all three Premier League matches so far and scored against Chelsea but Bilic’s decision to move to three at the back against City allowed Angelo Ogbonna a first start of the season. Although the Welshman remains favourite to retain his start, Winston Reid is arguably the most secure pick, albeit at a slightly higher cost of 5.0.

    On a WC:
    Foster - Jaku
    Valencia - Kosc - Williams - Collins - Amat
    Haz - Sterling - Antonio - Cazorla - Capoue
    Ibra - Benteke - Costa

Would leave 0.2m ITB. Thoughts? Not sure of Cazorla and Lukaku seems tempting as well...

Jaku not nailed (Pickford). Collins may not be nailed ( Evans).

Whats your plan of getting Aguero back in ?

Had him before, am torn between the two right now. I rate Lamela over Lallana by miles (not that Lamela is good, Lallana is usually garbage) but I just can't decide.

    Leaning towards Ramirez..

Ramirez too, palace will aim a lot of crosses at Benteke now and I have faith he'll finish them. Puncheon, Townsend Zaha etc will all benefit from that

Not wildcarding, but who are the must-have for Wc. Assuming its

GK- Probably Foster and Pickford(not important_

        Def- Baines

        Mid- Antonio Sanchez Ozil Sterling

        Fwd- Benteke

Ignoring the popular picks like Hazard, Ibra, Valencia who are likely in most teams.

Is there anyone else? Is Antonio or Benteke a must have really?

This could. But even if Amat doesn't his place, it nags me to play him any week. And while its okay to play Valencia and Williams every week, Collins is to risky to play all week given Whu's lack of CS appeal.

              no

if you make no changes, you will be playing some weeks with 2 defenders. and that
assumes Valencia and Williams are healthy.

            Thoughts on this W/C team

            Foster / Pickford
            Valencia / Baines / Koscielny / Amat / Smith
            Hazard / Sanchez / Sterling / Antonio / Capoue
            Costa / Zlatan / Barrow

It's either the above or ...

            A: Barrow / Ant / Kos to Benteke / Redmond / Kone
            B: Barrow / Kos / Baines - Benteke / Evans / Kone

Hmmm? Would ideally like Antonio and Baines, but struggling with that unless I go 5m for a striker.

I figure 5m for Barrow is better than 5m for a xxxx midfielder.

            Any thoughts much appreciated.

I honestly don't see why a WC team should have Amat, Smith, Capoue and Barrow and be forced to play one every week. Downgrade Kosc to a 4.5 and upgrade Barrow to a 6.5

                Cheers for your thoughts GT.

Downgrading Kosc is easy. Lots of great 4.5 options. Less so for the 6.5 forward options. Can't see any.

Yeah, thats the problem for you sadly. I have Gray and except his GW2, he still got to do something more to prove. I'd try to get Benteke in a WC. But think its rather hard in your case. Why not have Diomande as third choice, and Capoue upgraded to a 6.6 like Townsend, Redmond, Mirallas.

I could have Benteke and Antonio, but it will mean dropping Baines (and of course Kosc) to two 4.5 (Kone and Evans) I guess that option does leave a little more flexibility. Really would have liked to have had Baines though!

              RMWCT:

              Foster Pickford

              Baines Collins Evans Amat Love

              Haz Ozil Mane Sterling Leko

              Ibra Lukaku Tekkers

Defence is weak but it allows for that front 7...

Love wont start, Leko wont start. Collins could and will be dropped soon enough and that will leave you with only 3 playing defenders and 1 is injury prone.

                  good goalies

very poor defense. you will be playing with 2 defenders often. Love must go, and so should Amat.

Leko a poor pick. pick players who play. Love and Leko do not play. Amat won't be playing soon,
                  as bad as he's been.

                  front 3 is good.

make sure you have a sound plan to get Kun back in.

For long term which one is better option?

                  Sterling (mun,BOU,swa,tot,EVE)

                  - Better team but points might be spreaded

                  Barkley (sun,MID,bou,CRY,mci)

                  - Focal point of Everton attack but arguably worse team

i like Barkley a little bit better. and he's cheaper as well.

Man City begins Champion's League, roatation worries for Sterling. Barkley
is 100% nailed every game, no other distractions.

Sterling has been playing well, but i'd rather know my guy is playing every game.
Plus, it's obvious Koeman believes in Ross. i think he could have a very good year.

Hiya lads, i have decided to go 4-3-3 on my wildcard, i see value in just having a fourth defender instead of racking my brains trying to fit an awkward priced chosen cheapie as a 4th mid. May work, may not, but any opinions would be respected and nice to hear.

                  Foster
                  Baines - Valencia - Bellerin - PVA
                  Antonio - Hazard - Sanchez
                  Benteke - Ibra - Lukaku
                  ___________________________
                  Pickford: Capoue, Hojbjerg, Amat

Aguero plan: Ibra > Aguero + Sanchez > Ozil. Then just a case of changing a third mid to whoever is in form, or if all are playing well, keep as it is.

Well i could very well keep ibra if he's performing, if not, in comes Aguero. that's ok if you don't like the formation, heard some good things on it a few days ago, strays from the norm and following the herd, and makes my decision a hell of a lot simpler on who to select in midfield, never have to worry about a cheap mid, and if i do, there's capoue on my bench.

Plus, having both aguero and ibra in your team is not an option for me as the season progresses, and wont be for many others, the team is simply a mess with those two in it. need to lose one.

way too defence heavy, you're relying on calling clean sheets which is way too unreliable. Anything can happen, a dodgy penalty, players switch off for a second, goalkeeper makes a howler and there goes 4 points from that player, potentially baps too. So if that happens then you're just relying on attacking returns which just won't come from defenders enough compared to midfielders.

I'd switch at least 2 of those premium defenders to 4.5s and lukaku down to benteke and find a 7ish priced midfielder you fancy.

Also, your logic for this formation is that you don't want to have to deal with selecting a awkward priced chosen cheapie as a 4th mid, but you have Antonio in your team who at this point of the season is still a punt.

you make some good points, but there's always a flip side, i'm not so much relying on clean sheets, hence why i have chosen attacking defenders. Anything can happen in any game, i agree, so whilst that can happen, what can also is happen is clean sheets and attacking points. Defenders also good for baps.
Three midfielders is only one less than 4, so having a decreased defence all for the sake of a 4th mid isn't the way i'm seeing it, it's just not worth it. Plus not many people are striking me in the 6-7 million bracket.
How is Antonio a punt? Did you not see him play last season, and the two goals he's already scored this season?
I'm sticking with this formation, it will work i'm confident, i respect your comments though.

I'm 0,1 short of that team:

                      Heaton, Pickford
                      Baines, PVA, Evans, Amat, 4.0
                      Haz, Alexis, Sterling, Antonio, Capoue
                      Ibra, Lukaku, Tekkers

If there won't be any 3,9 defender until the end of window I will be forced either to dwongrade Capoue (not fond of idea) or search for fund somewhere else... What would you suggest? Maybe Sterling to Lamela?

Biggest threat of leaving Capoue is that some people may buy him as 4th midfielder and when he will underperfor he can start to loose his value

                          Is the Palace presser tomorrow?

Don't know if a 4-3-3 is good as suggested in a lot of posts recently. Yep it makes selection a lot easier but I do think we will see plenty of goals this year in the PL.

Even the lower teams now have some decent strikers who will score goals.

true, but it's never knowing who that cheap 4th mid will be or if he can be consistent, i just see the gamble is worth taking with a defender, i shall see how it goes anyway.

I have never seen it be suggested as good at all. It has been proven time and time again that 3-4-3 is best formation.

this is true. even the 3-5-2 is too tough to work and proves a downfall every season to the few punters who adopt this.
4-3-3 is a no-go zone except for injury emergencies.

To purchase for the next few fixtures..

                            Sanchez/ Ozil/ Antonio / Payet

Leaning towards Antonio on form, am I mad?

Good choice actually. His supply line will only improve now.

                            Based on an entire season:
Noble; Lanzini, Townsend Chadli or Rodriguez?

based on last season or this one?

                                This one.
Drafted teams with some friends. Atm have Townsend but bringing in Remy so not sure if I want two of Palace attack.
So was thinking of swapping Townnsend and those are the players that are still available to pick. (Also Januzaj, Sissoko, Walcott, Snodgrass, and some other cheap ones)
But as we drafted, I have to pick a player based on entire season, I can't swap em next week.

Lanzini is only one I would consider and Chadli if he plays in no.10 role regularly

tough to project a whole season.

Mark Noble rarely gets hurt, plays every game, and is on penalties.

from that list, if i had to keep one player no matter what, he's it.

I need a cheap striker , 7m max, for the mid term

It's come down to a Callum Wilson & Zaza , fixtures are good for both and I'm a fixtures man

Problem is no stats to go on . Zaza obviously has none & wilsons are bad since injury ...admittedly only 3 quite tough games

Anyone got anything to help me pick ?

Remy. I am getting Antonio eventually so Zaza is a no go for now.

                                  Perhaps Remy?

I feel so special as the only person that seems to not have zlatan in their WC team.
