Kevin De Bruyne orchestrates a Manchester City victory at Old Trafford. Michail Antonio pops up with another brace of headers and Etienne Capoue’s remarkable season continues with another double figure return. Here’s the Stock Check following Saturday’s events…

On the Rise

Kevin De Bruyne
Deployed in a central midfield role by Pep Guardiola, we’d almost written off the Belgian’s prospects of reaching last season’s heights. Today’s performance with goal and assist returns certainly prompts a rethink.

De Bruyne was seen clutching his hamstring late on, although local reports have suggested that Pep has confirmed this was just from fatigue rather than a genuine injury. We will know more ahead of City’s Champions League tie with Borussia Mönchengladbach on Tuesday.

Etienne Capoue
The Frenchman’s incredible early season output goes on belying this 4.7 price tag and continues to punish those who keep him benched – that was more than 269, 000 managers today.

Capoue has not only cemented his place as the budget midfielder of choice, he’s already done enough to push for selection in our XI ahead of the Gameweek 5 Vicarage Road encounter with Manchester United.

Odion Ighalo & Troy Deeney

The statistics told us that Watford were limited as an attacking force but the four goals at the London Stadium has surely dispelled that.

We know that Ighalo and Deeney are capable providers of Fantasy points and, once the Gameweek 5 clash with Manchester United is out of the way, the fixture list could benefit Walter Mazzarri’s attacking assets.

Jose Holebas
An unlikely goal from the Greek wing-back may have just blown the lid on his potential to FPL managers over Watford’s obliging run. Holebas has seen more touches in the final third than any other Hornets player and has fired in 17 crossed balls so far – more than any other Watford starter in Saturday’s win.

Michail Antonio
Recognised with an England call-up and with two goals to his name already this season, Antonio underlined his huge potential as a Fantasy asset with another two goals.

Again they were both headers, with the Hammers winger establishing himself as a regular target for aerial balls in the absence of Andy Carroll.

Antonio has already earned more new owners than any other player following today’s haul as his bandwagon inevitably picks up pace – an overnight price rise looks likely.

Dimitri Payet
Two assists, including a sublime rabona cross offered reminders of Payet’s talents.

It’s a stock rise for the Frenchman but, in light of Antonio’s twin strikes, Payet is unlikely to pick up significant transfer traffic.

Wilfried Zaha
Last season’s Eagles player of the year, Zaha has never managed to establish himself in Fantasy terms.

But goal and assist returns in the win at Middlesbrough demonstrated Zaha’s potential and, given his modest 5.4 price tag, he has the potential to be a factor in our seasons.

Certainly Andros Townsend has to begin to deliver on his promise if he is to hold Zaha as an option in the Palace midfield. The former Spurs man has now blanked in all four league outings having suffered a price drop to 6.4 ahead of Gameweek 4.

Christian Benteke
A typical towering header at the far post allowed Benteke to open his Palace account and reward the 65,000 who acquired his services ahead of today’s deadline. However, it should be noted that the decisive header was the Belgian’s only effort on goal.

Nonetheless, Benteke now looks a major temptation ahead of a Selhurst Park encounter with basement dwellers Stoke City.

Son Heung-min
The star of Tottenham’s demolition of Stoke, the South Korean was fresh to step into the starting lineup having sat out international duty and took his opportunity with aplomb.
Classified as a 7.4 midfielder, Son’s chances of cementing a starting role remain in doubt given the talent available to Mauricio Pochettino.

Christian Eriksen
Only Mesut Ozil bettered Eriksen’s haul of 16 assists last season but, until today, the Dane had appeared jaded and uncertain.

With a new contract settled, Eriksen’s output immediately improved as he laid on two assists in Tottenham’s rout in the Potteries.

He will need to go on delivering to attract investment – Eriksen’s 8.4 price tag looks to be an obstacle given the wealth of in-form midfield options on offer.

Harry Kane
The Spurs striker got off the mark with a tap in but will now look to kick-on.

Moussa Dembele returns from suspension for the Gameweek 5 home encounter with Sunderland and, according to the theory, that should trigger a further upturn in Kane’s form and output.

Kyle Walker

A second assist of the season, coupled with the second clean sheet for the Spurs defence, boosted Walker as the key target in their back four.

With Danny Rose sidelined and Toby Alderweireld 0.9 more expensive, Walker continues to standout and has Sunderland and Middlesbrough up next.

Roberto Firmino
After shedding ownership to the early Philippe Coutinho bandwagon, Firmino re-announced himself with a brace in the 4-1 thrashing of Leicester.

The Liverpool midfield continues to cause us an issue, with points again shared as Saido Mane and Adam Lallana prospered.

Lallana’s 7.1 price tag could become a key factor. Certainly his confidence and form cannot be questioned, but Firmino is also making a strong argument and currently we’re standing by him as our weapon of choice.

Robert Snodgrass
Having hit a hat-trick for Scotland over the break, Snodgrass turned to his dead-ball talents to rescue a point for Hull City at Burnley.

His prospects are perhaps limited by an evil run of opponents over the next three, although from Gameweek 8, Snodgrass looks to be positioned as a target as a cheaper fourth midfielder option.

Callum Wilson
We’d love the Bournemouth striker to thrive and provide us a viable 6.4 option and today’s brilliantly executed winner against West Brom certainly offered hope.

But Bournemouth have scored just four goals in their four outings and we’ll need to see them promise more before Wilson is truly promoted in our thinking.

Adam Smith
The Cherries right-back is a different prospect. Priced at 4.5, Smith’s attacking potential was again demonstrated by his assist and has now promoted him above Simon Francis as the choice option in Eddie Howe’s rearguard.

Santi Cazorla
Back to back spot-kicks have boosted the Spaniard as he continues to challenge Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil as the prime target in Arsene Wenger’s midfield.

Whilst penalties continue to be key this season, Cazorla will also have to provide from open play if he is to keep pace with that pair in the long-term.

For now, though, his output to this point, coupled with his 7.6 price tag, keeps him bubbling.

In Decline

Raheem Sterling
To say that Sterling wasn’t a factor in City’s Old Trafford win is an understatement. The winger followed up his two-goals in Gameweek 3 with a subdued display that saw him touch the ball less than any other City starter.

More significantly, he was withdrawn before the hour mark to be replaced by debutant Leroy Sane.

The promising German will clearly be a threat to Sterling, putting pressure on him to produce. While he should retain his start for the Gameweek 5 Etihad meeting with Bournemouth, Sterling will be under pressure to step up with Sane now a factor.

James Collins & Adrian
Preferred to Angelo Ogbonna over the opening four Gameweeks, Collins could now be under real threat for the forthcoming trip to West Brom as Slaven Bilic holds an inquest into the capitulation at the hands of Watford.

Adrian is another who could suffer – at fault for at least one of the goals, he will need a convincing performance at the Hawthorns to keep the challenge of Darren Randolph at bay.

Erik Lamela
Rested to the bench after international exertions, Lamela watched on while Son took his chance to impress.

Lamela has won plaudits with his early season form but Mauricio Pochettino clearly has options in midfield and the decision to drop Son next time out will not come easy.

Philippe Coutinho
Another major midfield asset preserved on the bench, Liverpool did not miss the promptings of the Brazilian playmaker and, if anything, benefited from having their build-up player uninterrupted by the Brazilian’s speculative long-range efforts.

With Firmino and Mane continuing to flourish, Coutinho’s 31% ownership will be fidgeting having now enduring three consecutive blanks.

Olivier Giroud
Starting on the bench today, Giroud had an impact in winning Arsenal’s decisive penalty but now appears to face a battle with Lucas Perez who was immediately thrown in to lead the Gunners’ attack.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Handed the opportunity to stake a claim for regular starts, the Armenian was badly off the pace and was duly hooked, along with Jesse Lingard, at half-time. As Mkhitaryan continues to stall, we appear to have little option but to stick by Zlatan Ibrahimovic for our cover of Jose Mourinho’s attack.

Nathan Redmond
A change of shape from Southampton at the Emirates saw Claude Puel abandon the midfield diamond and deploy Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond either side of Jay Rodgriguez. That comes as another blow to Redmond’s stock which took an earlier blow following the arrival of Sofiane Boufal before deadline day.

It seems that Redmond’s role as a central striker is in question with Rodriguez returning as an option – if that is the case, Boufal will threaten the former Norwich City man’s starting berth.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hi...

Is lamela to Antonio worth a hit?

I refrained from it this week.

But now lamela looks like massive rotation risk.

    Do I take a hit....or stick?

I'll be taking another hit gw6 to get kun

What if Son performs well in midweek? Then I can't see him being dropped for the Sunderland. They are professionals and are able to play 3 games in a week, especially at this stage of the season. "Should" is an overstatement.

As a Spurs fan, i'm pretty sure Lamela will be restorted to the starting line up for the CL fixture.

It's also worth noting that Lamela came on at 1-0 yesterday. Game ended 4-0.

    A. Hazard (c), Costa, Defoe & Baines

    B. Hazard, Kingsley & 16pts (although is Kingsley doesn't start then Smith 11pts of the bench)

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Last year was arguably defined by consistent returns from cheap players such as Mahrez and Alli. Coupled with a lack of credible players from Chelsea and Manchester United 2015/16 was also a season with very little choice. The template was small and defined early on.

Is this season already shaping up to be the opposite?

With around a dozen players hitting double figures yesterday we already have far more choice than our 15 man squads can handle.

And most of those high scorers are expensive. We simply can't afford them all.

How do we cope with a 2016/17 campaign where it is far harder to predict which of the very many high scoring heavy hitters will prosper ( sterling's 1 pt over kdb's haul being a case in point)?

You can't have them all so it comes down to judgement calls and not panicking if it is others that get a big haul one week.

Very tough season. For example two gwks ago I ditched firmino but this week I got Antonio so it sort of evens out.

I guess one thing to take is to trust in underlying stats. Firmino was due said the stats. Lallana is more attacking this season, Cazorla too.

Exactly. Each of the big teams has at least 4 players who could perform well in any given week. The points will be more spread. Some weeks you will own the player on those teams who excels. Other times you will not.

Cazorla and Lallana do look good picks.

      Your theory is correct....

But for me I think I'll be sticking with Hazard and ibra all season (had him since start) and getting Kun back gw6..

Doesn't leave much room for kdb sanchez etc tho....

It's fun this year! Everybody had the same setup last season. Extremely hard though. You're gonna be tempted by hits and knee jerks every week, chasing last weeks points.

I think the key is to choose the guy on more setpieces/pens or the one whose usual underlying stat advantage ensures he'll get more Bonus points. Or just the cheaper alternative.
Eg. Caz > Ozil > Sanchez
      Hazard > Costa
      Aguero > KDB
      Firmino > Mane > Coutinho

This will eliminate a few choices. Unless ofcourse you wanna double up on a team who are absolutely ripping it

In that case i went by the underlying stats and price. For sure Milner is a really good option, if he can get into the box more or supply some good crosses. Even Lallana is good

I guess picking a few big hitters and having patience will be key i.e. sticking with Firmino. There are cheaper enablers - I think having 2 cheapies might be the way forward. I've drafted in Snodgrass to go with Capoue. Need to decide on which teams to cover in midfield.

Patience with heavy hitters will continue to be very important, as we've already seen this season with the likes of Firmino.

That's why I'm holding ozil next gwk . Can see him punishing me if I ditched.

      • 10 Years
      9 years, 5 months ago

A good strategy I think is to maintain 4 big hitters and build team around them. I started with Sanchez, Ibra, Kun and Hazard and every week I'm pretty sure that at least one of them will come up with a nice haul. Knowing that taking out any of them may end up in disaster, I believe that it is sensible to look for value players to get in your team instead of looking to replace a premium mid with another premium mid.

It is difficult indeed to predict which heavy hitters will perform best in a given week. Not sure if people replacing Ozil or Sterling with KDB or Payet already are doing the best thing, as fortunes may easily turn the next week. Just get a few premium mids and forwards, leave them, trust them, be patient and focus on getting the right cheap players around them.

It's all about Snodgrass/Capoue for me from here Jonty.
It's staring is in the face.
      1 gk
      2 decent def/3 * 4.5 defs
      3 heavy hitters interchanging(Fixt)/Snoddy/Capoue
      Kun/Aguero/7ish.

Do you mean 3 heavy hitters in midfield and Capoue and Snodgrass 4th and 5th mid. It looks too expensive at first glance.

I haven't done the maths Demel but
Hazard/Pool mid/Arsenal mid should work, Antonio might sneak in there too at the expense of Snoddy if you wish. Sanchez would be tough and would need Snod/Cap I feel.
KdB may need to be looked at too if fixtures are there.
If you get your backline right and your strike force stays scoring I'm thinking on paper that interchanging Mids could be the key but that too brings its own problems, ie Firminho sellers which I was one of this weekend.

Same rationale why I got puncheon - I spotted that need for a 5.5 mid and capoue to afford the rest.

Looking like snodgrass is the best for that role - I'm certainly keen on him in a few wks.

Fair point, I came up with
          Foster/4.0
          Valencia/Williams/4.5/4.5/Amat
          Haz/Firmo/Caz/Soddy/Capoue
          Kun/Ibra/Defoe

Maybe not as good as I thought in midfield but you could scrape around a bit.
Tho it does copper fasten my point in my mind that we may need Snoddy etc as a 4th or go down the road of a cheap 3rd striker and play 3-5-2.

But then yes any combo from (Ozil;Sanchez;Cazorla;KDB;Sterling;Nolito;Lallana;Firmino;Mane;Eriksen;Lamella;Alli;;Payet;Antonio ....)

Agree. Its looking difficult to fit in so many big hitters. But have to pick your big hitters and stand by them.

Was looking at a GW6 WC but don't feel the need to. I'm an Ibra loyalist and need to find a way back for Kun with 1.2M in the bank but i genuinely feel Ibra looks good for 25+ goals and assists combined this season. Cazorla might be the answer.

I think you can't do any better than getting the main men of the three title challengers in Agurero, Ibra and Hazard and build around it. I've wildcarded this week to get Antonio, Capoue and Benteke in or else I'd be short of cash after getting Kun back.

My wildcard big money pick is still Firmino so I should get back my 0.1 loss after yesterday lol. Liverpool have goals in them and Klopp loves Firmino!

If Lukaku does well the next 2 games then I'll be doing Ibra to Aguero when he back and leaving a front 3 of Aguero Lukaku Benteke. The money saved can then be spent in midfield. That would shake things up a bit.

Now i know this is something which any serious FPL-er would practice, but in the early weeks when many other choices are scoring and players with seemingly less skill/effort than you having a higher rank, the itch to take hits will crop up. I just want to remind you the importance of steadying your urge to do it.
If you have a good player in your team with good stats and decent fixtures, keep backing him for reasons you picked him in the first place. He will deliver, and your research will not be in vain. I held onto Firmino and I'm sure quite a few did the same or kept Eriksen/Tadic. I'm pretty happy about it. A good rank is pleasing, but your faith in a player being rewarded gives you hope whatever your rank is.

I agree! I didn't WC and stuck with Wilson & Firmino. They literally saved my GW. Barring injuries, I may not may not use my FT this week.

Same here. And after watching the West Ham and CPL result, i almost decided to WC and get Antonio, Benteke for starters. But now i might just go for 1 of them. West Brom isn't the easiest opposition when ur primary attribute is Heading crosses which come into the box

You're exactly right. I lost Firmino after GW2 despite him being the first name on my team sheet when the game launched.

One thing I'm refusing to do this season is take -4 to jump on any bandwagon going (I.e. Antonio).

Will probably eat humble pie and bring Firmino back in for Pogba next week (why!?).

I think the key here is 'carefully thought out', it would be easy to rush into transfers when you're more than prepared to take a hit to get in players who just scored some points.

Agreed. Even a simple fact that Liverpool attack is much better against 'top teams' than lower level teams is something which is difficult to consider at the outset. But with careful thought, you'll end up with great dofferentials

How does this fit with "building team value though"?

E.g. This theory suggests that you hold off getting Antonio or Cazorla this week, preferring to "hold" whoever you currently have.

Have to think a little broader. If you keep players that you think will do well going forward and they do so, then their value will rise with it.

By contrast short term wagons who rise 0.1-0.2 may go backwards as quickly as they went up when it becomes apparent they weren't all that after all.

Fair point. Adding to what Ryan said, If there is a player with genuinely better stats, plus better points output, i guess u can switch.
But i can't imagine that all your mids or strikers are having great stats but r unlucky. I'm sure there will be someone who u can sell to get a Cazorla. If money is an issue, then u'll have to choose who u think will be better

Yep, I held on to Firmino as well for exactly the same reason. His stats were more than good, it was more bad luck than bad form that he hadn't done more than an assist so far. But we're only in week 4 and he's found the net now, so he's staying.

West Ham have never solid at the back since Bilic took charge. Boleyn Ground is probably missed by the players and fans, and the new stadium doesn't give such an advantage yet. Add to that terrible mistakes at the back ( https://gyazo.com/4833cf036b33ee3ff7a381c64d5bd319 ) Watford's good attacking form... Still think that West Ham attacking options are nothing less than outstanding, although it's the defence that lets them down. Collins and Byram have to be dropped.

Starting to get worried about Heaton in goal, my normal tactic is to get a keeper from one of the top teams who has good fixtures and then replace him for another top keeper if the fixtures turn.

Got Heaton this year because I looked at the stats and the "poorer" teams keepers usually score quite highly, Heaton with lots of saves for instance. But maybe they won't keep that many cs this year and having him is just a hindrance.

I think you'd get more credit if you'd mentioned the fixtures before United being the plum ones, rather than the ones after.

Replacing Mane (and Firm should prove plenty cover) would free up a lot of cash but there are a hell of a lot of better picks than Son.

Aguero is really but I'd say Ibra is very much in the same ball park now.

Aguero isn't quite the center of City's attack as much as Zlatan is for United, I don't think we'll ever see a Zlatan blank in a 3 goal United performance like we did for Aguero.

I agree. Of course Aguero has been considered essential for years and thats not going to change soon.

With that being the case then Ibra has to be considered essential too.

With his ownership, he has to be the one to go if you're chasing. Much too early in the season for that yet, though.

I was considering selling Ibra to make way for Aguero in GW6 but his stats have put that thought on permanent hold. He's undroppable.

I don't know exactly how many finishes he had yesterday but it has to be close to double digits. He's way to dangerous to leave out. Also he hasn't looked particular good but he still has 4 goals in 4 games in the prem. Can't overlook that imo

I've been banging that drum a while now. To mee it seems Ibra will conribute to almost all of Utd goals. Pogba makes Valencia/shaw look better too.

In Ibra's first two games his stats were modest at best but he's gone into beast mode now.
