Sturridge and Oxlade-Chamberlain both score twice while Hull City hold on in an entertaining night of EFL Cup action, offering us valuable clues on the Gameweek 10 teamsheets. Here’s how three Premier League teams booked their quarter-final spots.

Liverpool 2 Tottenham 1

After using no out-and-out strikers for much of the campaign, Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp went with two against Spurs, and Daniel Sturridge (9.9) took the chance to double his goalscoring returns for the season, with all four of his strikes coming in the EFL Cup.

The England international scored either side of the break, from assists by Marko Grujic (4.5) and Georginio Wijnaldum (7.6). Spurs rallied late on after Vincent Janssen (7.8) converted a penalty following a Lucas (4.4) foul on substitute Erik Lamela (6.8), but the Reds were good value for the win.

Klopp made 11 changes to his weekend team, Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino opted for 10, and in many ways the match mirrored Liverpool’s win over West Brom. They dominated, went 2-0 up, failed to kill their opponents off and had to endure a nervy end to proceedings after conceding against the run of play.

With Divock Origi (6.6) also starting and Danny Ings (5.5) given a run-out when the young Belgian was beset by cramp, it afforded Anfield a rare sighting of all three Liverpool strikers in action.

Klopp’s post-match praise for Sturridge, however, was notable for its absence of any suggestion that the forward was much closer to a regular starting berth in the league.

“That’s his talent, that’s his strength. He’s a finisher, he’s a really good striker, there’s no doubt about this. I was never in doubt about this, even when he didn’t score. That’s not in question.”

Despite his goals, then, Sturridge will surely be handed a bench role for the visit to Crystal Palace at the weekend, with Klopp again opting to start Roberto Firmino in the central attacking role. Wijnaldum got 90 minutes and is now in a position to push Emre Can for his start but, again, Klopp would seem likely to stick the side that won the points against West Brom last time out.

As for Spurs, Pochettino’s decision to start with Trippier and Davies would suggest that both Kyle Walker and Danny Rose will line up for the visit of Leicester City in Gameweek 10. Janssen’s start last night would also hint that Son Heung-min (7.7) will be given another opportunity to lead the attack, despite being replaced on the hour mark after a disappointing display against Bournemouth.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Alexander-Arnold (Clyne 68), Lucas, Klavan, Moreno, Wijnaldum, Stewart, Ejaria, Grujic (Can 89), Sturridge, Origi (Ings 68).
Subs not used: Karius, Lovren, Mane, Lallana.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Vorm, Trippier, Carter-Vickers, Wimmer, Davies, Dier (Wanyama 67), Winks, Onomah, Carroll (Lamela 61), Nkoudou (Harrison 84), Janssen.
Subs not used: Vertonghen, Lopez-Sabata, Walkes, Amos.

Arsenal 2 Reading 0

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s (5.8) brace confirmed Arsenal’s superiority over their spirited Championship opponents.

The midfielder scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season – already his best-ever return for the Gunners before October is even complete. He took advantage of a Reading mistake to open the scoring after 33 minutes and sealed the deal in the second-half from an assist by substitute Olivier Giroud (8.8).

The return to action of the French striker, who has been restricted by injuries to just 54 minutes in the league this season, was a boost to coach Arsene Wenger’s forward options. Less pleasing was the performance of fellow striker Lucas Perez (7.9), who looked lacklustre before being replaced by Giroud.

Wenger’s defensive depth was also strengthened by Carl Jenkinson’s (5.0) first start following a nine-month knee injury lay-off. With Mathieu Debuchy (4.7) out of favour, Jenkinson is likely to provide much-needed cover for Hector Bellerin (6.6) at right back.

But the night belonged to Oxlade-Chamberlain, who received lavish post-match praise from Wenger.

“He’s powerful but he also finishes well and he’s added that to his game. That’s certainly linked with confidence, hard work in training, and he looks to be following Theo Walcott in that way. He’s not a long way away from the starting XI…I feel that he is regularly involved.”

The 23-year-old does, however, face a difficult task finding his way into the Arsenal starting XI given that Wenger will also have to accommodate the talents of Aaron Ramsey. In addition, with Giroud and Perez pushing for a central attacking role, Alexis Sanchez may eventually be considered for a shift back to the flank, further reducing Oxlade-Chamberlain’s opportunities.

Elsewhere, Alex Iwobi’s 90 minutes is a little troubling – he has started the last five Premier League outings, which may suggest that his role could be under threat for the visit to Sunderland this weekend.

Arsenal XI: Martinez, Jenkinson, Gabriel, Holding, Gibbs, Elneny, Maitland-Niles, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Zelalem 80), Iwobi, Reine-Adelaide (Giroud 66), Perez (Willock 72).
Subs not used: Macey, Bielik, Bola, Sheaf.

Bristol City 1 Hull City 2

Hull City avoided a fifth straight defeat by the skin of their teeth in a nervy win over Championship opponents.

Record signing Ryan Mason’s (4.9) set-play deliveries proved to be the difference, with two of his corners headed home by Harry Maguire (4.4) and then Michael Dawson (4.4).

But the Tigers were out-shot 19-11 by their hosts, and only a last-gasp clearance on the line saved Hull from extra-time in a thrilling finale.

Boss Mike Phelan went with a 3-5-2 system and made six changes to his team, including starts for left wing-back Josh Tymon (4.0) and strikers Abel Hernandez (6.0) and Adama Diomande (4.6).

Leading FPL points-scorer Robert Snodgrass (5.7) didn’t travel as he faces up to four weeks out with an ankle injury.

The result was welcome, but the performance doesn’t augur well as Hull face up to a trip to a newly-resolute Watford and then a home match with the in-form Southampton ahead of the November international break.

Hull XI: Jakupovic, Maguire, Dawson, Davies, Elmohamady, Livermore, Mason (Huddlestone 79), Tymon, Henriksen, Diomande, Hernandez (Meyler 89).
Subs not used: Kuciak, Clucas, Maloney, Weir, Bowen.

I wouldn't loose Mustafi for Lovren personally. Imo him and Holebas are your best two defenders by a mile. I'd ditch Williams but I know he wouldn't generate as much funds.

Most people are getting Arsenal defence in! How about Foster & Antonio > Grant & Walcottt.

Could someone quickly (if that is even possible) explain how players prices move, I assume good/bad performances and player ownership account for this, but just wondered if there was much more to this?

Reason I ask is I have already used my game week transfer on Sterling to Coutinho, but have just woke to the news of Snodgrass, is it worth taking a hit to preserve value here?

Thoughts and knowledge would be appreciated!

    1. Phil Dagger ⭐
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

there is a threshold set for all players and if it reaches near to 100% they will either lose value or gain value depending on the transfers in and out

just use fplstatistics.com and monitor progresses of player you want to know

      snodgrass atm is on -49%

        9 years, 4 months ago

Don't quote me but I think price changes vary on an injured player. It may be them returning to fitness that resets the %. Anyone clarify?

He's on -50 on fplstats I reckon he's going to fall on Friday night because that's when most of the transfers transfers happen.

I can afford Chadli for a hit but I'm confused if I should do it.

My plan regardless of injury for next week was going to be
        Deeney -> Austin
Snod -> Redmond or someone similar.
        -4 hit

Just looks my hand is forced next week. I can take .1 reduction for snod but not much more..

He won't fall more 0.1 till next week so if you can afford that I'd advise not to take a hit.

It is based on an algorithm that includes % ownership and net transfers in/out - FPL keep the exact maths a secret but some sites come close to predicting rises and falls, e.g.

      http://fantasyfootballfix.com/price/

Whether you sell Snoddy or not depends on whether you were going to play him anyway, if you have someone on your bench to replace him, how much you bought him for and how much value you'll lose if you keep hold of him.

For example, if you bought him at 5.6m, you will lose nothing if he drops 0.1m as he's now 5.7m and you need a 0.2m rise to gain any profit. I doubt he'll drop by more than 0.1m as his total ownership is only 6.7% so it's probably not worth taking a hit if you've got a good sub.

That said, I've got the same issue and am dumping him and Antonio for a hit as I've had enough of them!

I was going to play Allen this week anyway.

My plan regardless of injury for next week was going to be

Snod -> Redmond or someone similar.
        -4 hit

Just looks my hand is forced now. I bought Snod for 5.6 so can take .1 reduction anyway.

AJ, you can read this for some background info:

          http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=77216

note that these were the rules for 2010/11 and there have been many minor changes and one major change in particular (in that the second rise/fall in a GW no longer needs double the transfers) but you can get the gist of the mechanics here. I wish those at FISO would post an updated one for more recent rules, but I don't think they have.

Definitely. I'm not too sure who yet, but there is a serious ? over Kun for me given the rotation and the ucl, so I'm wondering if there will be value in either Slimani or hoping another Vardy party gets off the ground... Still never received goal from him on FPL, astonishingly!

Thinking of getting in a Leicester defender next week

    • 10 Years
    9 years, 4 months ago

Just a little stat... Arsenal's avg points/game under Wenger in each month:

    August: 1.90
    September: 2.10
    October: 2.13
    NOVEMBER: 1.60
    December: 1.97
    January: 1.93
    February: 1.99
    March 2.22
    April: 2.10
    May: 1.95

November is coming, and Arsenal play Tottenham and Bournemouth at home + Man United away in that month. Given their terrible form in November during Wenger's reign and the increased fixture difficulty, it would be wise to jump off their assets after the Sunderland game imo.

Think clean sheets/goals per game on a monthly basis may be a more useful indicator of Fantasy relevance.

        Still pretty random.

        • 10 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Maybe. Although I find it interesting that the myth about Arsenal literally losing the most points in the 3rd/4th month of the season has some proof.

Who knows, but i can't see it being anything but coincidence.

If Arsenal do poor this month it's because the fixtures aren't particularly brilliant, not because it's November. If their fixtures were a sea of blue I'd expect them to do well.

We may as well start playing FPL based on starsigns. The reason Kun has been blanking recently is because the stars are aligning 😮

"If Arsenal do poor this month it's because the fixtures aren't particularly brilliant, not because it's November" So you are assuming that during Wenger's 20 years at Arsenal, their significant drop in form in November has occured because they usually got tougher tixtures in that month? Now that's nonsense. If I made the comparison based on 4, 5 years then fair enough - the sample would be too small; but 20 years?

November is the month were the crucial CL group games are played, add to that the Carling Cup and the general fixture congestion. I'm not saying that because of the fact that the name of the month is November we should stay clear of Arsenal players, I never said that. But with their history of being unable to be consistent on three fronts at this stage of the season and an actual increased fixture difficulty I believe it may be wise to look at alternatives...

I'm saying this month in isolation will be based on nothing but the fixtures, not because it happens to be November. Anyhow, this team is 100% completely different to the Arsenal of 20 years ago, so shouldn't be compared.

Yes we tend to have a lot of hope in sept/Oct before falling apart under the pressure of the ucl/cups/Prem in November before resurging in Xmas/spring. I hope with Mustafi, Xhaka and Lucas now in the ranks, not to mention Welbeck, Ramsey and even le donkey (Giroud) coming back from injuries we actually have a squad to compete this time out

That said, I'm happy with just Sanchez and Mustafi for now. If Sanchez blanks again this week (I'm not captaining him so it's not likely!) he is under the microscope for removal, along with Kun...

We should definitely sell the player that becomes pivotally injured. But that's as far as the analysis goes, I think.

      lol

points per game means nothing for fpl

What if they lose all their November games 4-3 and Walcott, Sanchez and even Giroud are banging them in.

Granted their defence would suck but I don't own any. 🙂

This is only useful if compared with other teams in the premier league, imo. I think November is the time where fixtures do start to bottle neck, and Arsenal's squad depth has always been shallow compared to this season.

I think with Giroud and Ramsey coming back in, it could be different this year.
