After checking in on the latest movements of the goalkeepers on our Watchlist, our focus now shifts to the risers and fallers in defence.

Having registered five consecutive clean sheets, the form of the Chelsea rearguard has forced us to reassess the potential offered by premium assets at the back, while a run of four home fixtures in the next six brings Spurs defenders back into consideration.

But that’s certainly not to say that value can’t be found elsewhere, with a stack of mid-price candidates providing viable options for our five-man backlines.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on the homepage on desktop, or via the fourth button on the homepage on mobile and tablet.

West Bromwich Albion’s Gareth McAuley, who’s currently the fourth most popular defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with an ownership of 24.3%, sits at the summit of our standings.

The centre-back has already scored twice in the top-flight this season, and his goal threat, combined with some very strong short-term fixtures (BUR, hul, WAT, SWA) over the coming period, make him a standout option, coming in at 4.7 in FPL – the same price as team-mate Ben Foster.

It’s not just McAuley who has caught our eye from the Baggies backline, though, with Chris Brunt another interesting option.

Brunt has started West Brom’s last two matches in midfield, offering us ‘out of position’ potential, but his starting spot may not necessarily be secure given Albion have suffered with injuries and suspensions over the past few weeks.

Both McAuley and Brunt found the net in Northern Ireland’s 4-0 win over Azerbaijan, with the latter also providing an assist. Considering he takes many of West Brom’s set-pieces – a key strength for the Baggies – Brunt boasts the prospects of assists, having served up 14 over the previous two seasons.

Chelsea’s in-form Marcos Alonso has emerged as the key top bracket target, having added a goal and assist to five successive shut-outs since his arrival on the teamsheet in Gameweek 6.

The Spaniard’s raids from left wing-back mean he promises attacking returns even in difficult match-ups, which could see him prosper even over the Blues’ testing short-term schedule.

Chelsea’s fixtures also ease considerably from Gameweek 15, providing the platform for Alonso’s 2.8% ownership and 6.0 price to climb further.

Tottenham’s Danny Rose is the other premium choice defender to features in the top echelons of the Watchlist.

Price is a key factor in Rose being favoured over team-mate Kyle Walker, with the former setting us back 5.9 in FPL, compared to 6.1 for Walker.

But Rose has also offered the greater attacking threat over the last four Gameweeks, averaging a shot every 40.9 minutes, compared to every 183 minutes for Walker.

He has also provided superior assist potential, averaging a key pass every 47.7 minutes over the same period, compared to every 73.2 minutes for the Spurs right-back.

Elsewhere in the mid-price bracket, Stoke City’s Erik Pieters has edged above Watford’s Jose Holebas and Bournemouth’s Adam Smith.

The left-back rises to prominence mostly due to the Potters strong short-term fixtures (BOU, wat, BUR), while he also benefits from the doubt surrounding Lee Grant’s starting role given Jack Butland is now back in training.

Holebas and Smith both fell off the suspension tightrope in the last round of fixtures, and will subsequently sit out next weekend’s fixtures.

Both players will likely enjoy a rise following Gameweek 12, though, due to their attacking promise.

Holebas holds the edge at this point given that Watford face five strong fixtures in six upon his return from suspension, making him a viable starter, even in an FPL 3-4-3.

Hull City’s Michael Dawson and Middlesbrough’s George Friend are both “up and comers” in this bracket – the pair come in at just 4.4 and 4.5 respectively in FPL and, like Holebas and Smith, boast the potential for attacking returns.

Hull also remain in the middle of a very favourable part of their schedule, while ‘Boro’s fixtures do improve slightly over the coming month.

Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren hovers near the top of our rankings as our preferred Reds option, with his set-piece threat and price tag offering some attraction, despite the lack of clean sheets for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Croatian is just ahead of Leicester City’s Christian Fuchs, who slips in our estimations due to the absence of the injured Kasper Schmeichel, despite the promise of some kind short-term fixtures.

With a strong goal threat and some improving fixtures, Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk remains firmly in our thoughts.

But with Cedric Soares closing in on a first-team return following an ankle injury, the 4.9-priced right-back is set to replace the Dutchman on the Watchlist due to his kinder price tag and assist potential. Soares could well return for Gameweek 12.

Found lower down in our standings is Man City’s John Stones. We’re keeping faith in the England international given City’s schedule remains favourable, while his recent impressive BPS scores are also a contributing factor – Stones was in line for a second successive match with bonus points against ‘Boro before their late equaliser.

The Arsenal defence is represented by Laurent Koscielny lower down the ranks but could eventually be a key factor in our defensive plans.

Hector Bellerin is a doubt for the Gameweek 12 trip to Manchester United and it is suggested that he will be sidelined for a month with his ankle injury.

Should that be the case, we will likely promote Carl Jenkinson as an option in the Watchlist and, priced at just 5.0, he’ll likely edge his way into the top ranks as a short-term option during Bellerin’s absence.

Now that Kane is back, who is more likely to start league games, Son or Lamela?

Kane, eriksen and alli will play most. Son, lamela, sissoko rotated in the final spot. More often than not out of son and lamela.

I think the attacking 3 will be absolutely form dependent. Eriksen, Alli most likely starters, and atm Son is certainly favoured.

I think you'll get more points if you spread the Sanchez cash around. Your 3 big hitters are hurting your team too much. Would be different if Sanch & Kun were performing at their price points.

I've done the transfers last Monday itself. The reason I've retained sanchez is because I believe he's an asset when arsenal are playing away to a bottom half team. That's when he's usually dangerous I think. Mane and cout for all Liverpool home games is tasty. I'm worried about kun only. If he's not performing, I'll suffer with this team.

Funds are tight so I can afford Evans and Nyom with free transfer (Smith to Evans/Nyom) but could get MacAuley or Brunt by downgrading somene like Sterling (but think I wanna give him a chance vs CRY). RMT

    Pickford;
    Fuchs, Evans, Britos;
    Sánchez, Hazard, Firmino, Redmond;
    Agüero(vc), Lukaku(c), Austin.

    Heaton; Fletcher, Amat, Holebas*.

    1FT; £0.3m ITB.

Start Heaton(wba) or Pickford(HUL)? I'm sure there are quite a few out there who have this dilemma, I don't see either game having a large amount of goalmouth action for either keeper putting save potential sort of down the drain so do you go for Pickford purely based on clean sheet potential?

Anyone worth moving on? Was thinking about Britos out but I can only afford a £4.7m or less defender, worth saving for a week so I can get Brunt instead?

    Love you all.

I know exactly what the objections to this team will be (expensive defenders & money on the bench/benching headache) however I think all players offer value for money and I won't need to make transfers for minor injuries as I'll have good cover.

    Foster, Jaku
    Koscielny, Azpilicueta, Walker, McAuley, Pieters
    Hazard, Firminho, Coutinho, Walcott, Lallana
    Lukaku, Defoe, Austin

Starting with this team in week 1 would mean 802 points which is 66 points more than the current leader. This is with making the obvious captain and bench choices, not the highest scoring ones.

    1. Burton
      • 16 Years
      9 years, 5 months ago

My objection would be that you'd have to know in advance to pick exactly these players. It's a useless point unless you can abstract it into a system for selecting the right individuals.

      The questio

      1. Burton
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

...n would then be whether a manager would do better on average by following your system than by following the one that's emerged (cheap keepers, one or two decent defenders, as many stars as you can manage without compromising on the remainder).

I've been playing for quite a few season and have always advocated having the top scoring player - Aguero the last few seasons. obviously this is due to always receiving double his score as he is always captain.
However this year there are so many players scoring well and the gulf in price between Aguero and players who are performing just as well (Coutinho, Firminho, Lukaku, even Defoe although he'll never keep up) means that there is no value in blowing £13m of your budget on him.

Also there are very few cleansheets so i think it's important to have premium defenders from each of the best three teams defensively in the league. It's much more difficult to find a cheap option who can offer similar returns.

          1. Burton
            • 16 Years
            9 years, 5 months ago

That's hindsight right there. You're right that Aguero's not been performing at the level his price requires, and the team above is basically template with spare Aguero cash spread around.

But unless you know in advance how players will score, you'd have to be crazily lucky to choose correctly. And then when Aguero *does* return to his best, you're kinda screwed.

All that said, it would be great for the game if you make it work.

I still think Aguero will be the top scorer this season but he has been priced very high at a time when some other players seem to have been under valued. I think that this year FPL have hit on a price for him that means that he is not essential anymore, especially when players like Hazard, Sanchez and Coutinho offer very legitimate alternate captaincy options, all three are pretty much up top and they all receive an extra point per goal and cleansheet.

Obviously the past 11 game weeks are affecting the players that I'm picking but all these players (except Pieters and Jaku) are expected to continue scoring well.
Obviously there will be times when there are points on the bench but that's a good thing, it means my subs are on form.

    Hi guys,I'd appreciate the advice.

Amat is my third defender this week, 1 FT already used. Defence is Kosc, Evans, Amat (Holebas, Smith)

Is it worth doing Smith > Pieters or Danny Rose for -4?

Usually i hate doing -4 for a defender but i can't field 11 otherwise! Or should i just take the 0 points?

Why not do Amat to Pieters, Amat is the priority as he no longer plays.

Amat is a bench fodder anyway. I wouldn't waste a transfer on him personally. He may regain his place back also

I'd rather have 15 players to make money from early in the season and be set up to cover the rotation at Christmas. Pieters has a good fixture this week and is much more useful fodder than Amat.

Sanchez and Wally to hazard and coutinho? Helps spread cost better across midfield and would allow me to upgrade bolasie

why would you swap a non flagged player for a flagged player 😆

      Pickford

      Alonso Clyne Walker (Macauley Francis)

      Sanchez Coutinho Hazard Bolasie (Allen)

      Lukaku Costa Benteke.

Going with Bolasie over Allen for that nice Swanse fixture.

Wow that Hazard hot topic is one of the best examples of going round in circles that I have ever seen 😆

Fair play to Mark for all the replies though 🙂

    This week its either

    Nyom locked in?

I have 4.3 to spend (and get rid of Amat).. seems a little too fortuitous

      The rest is:

      Walker/Stones/Martina/Amat/Holebas

So the danger is only two will be playing!!

I could swap Martina instead to a 4.5...?

Martina to Evans/Pieters. Nyom supposedly not nailed.

    1FT - 0.8 ITB - thoughts?

    Cech - Pickford

    Walker - Lovren - Holebas - Pieters - Amat

    Sanchez - Firmino - Walcott - Allen - Capoue

    Aguero - Lukaku - Austin

On a WC and looking at a different approach. I'll have exact cash for

    Heaton / Pickford
    Brunt / Alonso / Pieters / Kingsley / 3.9
    Firmino / Coutinho / Ozil / Hazard / KDB
    Lukaku / Slimani / Anichebe

I agree that the forward line looks very depleted, but look at it this way
KDB has been equalling Kun's points ever since his debut, and is practically a like-for-like replacement, albeit cheaper.
Slimani is great at home, and has good home fixtures coming up.
    Anichebe is bench fodder
The super heavy mid is currently giving much better returns than other combinations, and I feel it will keep doing so.
As for the Captain Kun principle, I have plenty of alternate cap options in the team. Not worried about it.

Thoughts? (I'd appreciate it if responses won't be focused on the absence of Kun 😀 )

As a non aguero owner myself I like it. But I'd consider upgrading Slimani > Costa or Kane and downgrading Firmino or Ozil.

I prefer Defoe to Slimani and then you get an extra £1m for your defence

Wouldn't that make it a really feeble frontline?
Even Austin is option i thought and gave up on

Defoe has the same points as Aguero, why is that feeble?

I like the mid and I am in the KDB camp at the moment too. But I would look at having forwards that will guarantee you minutes and could come in should something happen. I am not a fan of building a team around 11 players you will start week in week out, and not having a back up plan...
