Following our analysis of the latest Watchlist movements among the goalkeepers and defenders over the last few days, we now turn our attention to the midfielders.

The Watchlist is designed to offer a view on our current mid-term player recommendations, based on the prospects spanning the next four-to-six Gameweeks.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on desktop and mobile.

Having amassed 49 points over the last four Gameweeks – via five goals and two assists – it’s impossible to look beyond Chelsea’s Eden Hazard at the top of our standings.

The Belgian does face difficult fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur and Man City in the next three, but there’s little doubt he has the form to prevail, while Chelsea also have a great schedule from Gameweek 15 onwards.

Tomorrow’s Stamford Bridge press conference will be keenly monitored by Fantasy managers given that Hazard sustained a knock while on duty with Belgium. However, we fully expect Antonio Conte to declare Hazard fit to to travel to Middlesbrough and resume his scintillating run of form.

Trailing the Chelsea man, it’s no surprise to find Liverpool’s in-form Brazilians leading the chase.

Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino have both shown improved consistency of late, garnering attacking returns in each of the last three Gameweeks, and look set to continue plundering points given that the Reds’ fixture list remains favourable.

If you can find a way to accommodate both in your five-man midfield, then that does look the optimum setup for the coming month.

Both Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane remain in our thoughts, although the former is now temporarily out of the equation having sustained further groin problems in England’s 2-2 draw against Spain in midweek.

Lallana can eventually provide the value option of the four, although having blanked in his two previous starts before a 12-point haul against Watford, it’s difficult to look beyond the Coutinho and Firmino combination as the key coverage of Liverpool’s vibrant midfield.

As for Mane, his underlying numbers aren’t quite as promising, although he remains a viable option given his average of 6.1 points per game (ppg).

While Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez emerged unscathed in Chile’s 3-1 win over Uruguay, and also scored twice, he does suffer a slight drop on our ladder due to concerns that Arsene Wenger may have to manage his minutes over the next couple of matches.

Sanchez seems likely to start at Old Trafford, although the theory that he could be shifted wide to make way for the physical presence of Giroud appears to have legs.

Certainly, there’s a chance that Theo Walcott could be absent from the Manchester United clash given that we believe that his wife is still on the verge of giving birth to a second child. While details on that possibility remain understandably scarce, we still have confidence on Walcott as an option in the mid-term.

Sanchez’s home form is also a concern. Arsenal’s next two matches at the Emirates are against Bournemouth and Stoke City – matches he’d be expected to deliver in – yet he has scored just one league goal in six home outings so far. That has us favour the value offered by Walcott, a key factor given the lure of Hazard and the aforementioned Liverpool pairing.

Simmering around the two Arsenal players is Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne, who offers the double-up option alongside Sergio Aguero, or even perhaps as an alternative to the Argentine given he’s averaging 6.2 ppg, compared to 6.8 for the striker.

City do have some tough fixtures coming up, though, while Pep Guardiola has already shown his fondness for rotation, which is a concern heading towards the busy festive period.

That means Ilkay Gundogan may prove to be the preferred option when considering a City double-up, as either a mid-price fourth midfielder or even a fifth midfielder in a 3-5-2.

The emergence of Gundogan has dented the prospects of Raheem Sterling, who slides all the way down to the foot of our rankings.

In terms of budget options, it’s Stoke City’s Joe Allen and Hull City’s Robert Snodgrass that are the standout candidates.

Allen is on the Suspension Tightrope after collecting four yellow cards, but does face three very favourable matches over the next few weeks. There are also concerns that he could sacrifice his number ten role in the light of recent Stoke City injuries in midfield.

Snodgrass also has great fixtures to kick on from his goal and assist on his return against Southampton last time out, while West Bromwich Albion’s Nacer Chadli also demands our attention.

The Belgian could rise higher in our rankings once his availability following a knee problem is confirmed – he remains a doubt for Monday’s clash with Burnley.

Chadli could prove to be a powerful differential given he has the fixtures, previous form, and is also on penalties for the Baggies.

We’re currently troubled by the lack of an obvious Tottenham target, with Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen tussling for our affections.

With Dele Alli out the equation through injury, we’re sticking with Son for now in anticipation that his starting role remains secure. However, we see ourselves eventually leaning towards Eriksen.

Having netted twice in the international break, the Dane boasts some strong underlying numbers which suggest that he could be another to emerge as a profitable differential in the coming weeks.

Out of interest, would people be so bothered about the 75% flags if it didn't reset NTI?

Or does the whole thing rest on that?

    1. Diva

If they lift the flag within the next 24 hours it shouldn't even do that. But the flag system does need to have some rigour behind it.

        That's why I ask.

Not sure if people are actually bothered that someone might not be 100% injured but is flagged (which is the whole point of 75%) or if it's just because of NTI.

Part of me thinks it's NTI reset that is causing all the moaning about it, and I would agree, it shouldn't reset.

        1. Diva

My understanding is it won't reset if they lift the flag inside 24 hours so there's no need to complain just yet.

But people need to have confidence in the flag system, particularly as it is so important for players who don't pay as much attention as people on here. Normally, FPL is very attentive to the needs of that group but in this case they appear to be letting them down on Coutinho from what I have seen so far.

So that would mean there's enough doubt in your mind before bringing him in so FPL flagging him is correct.

If I was betting money on Coutinho+Hazard playing it would definitely be on them playing but there's enough doubt for both that I'd wait so I think the flags are correct.

Resetting NTI is a different story though, shouldn't be doing that in my opinion and I'd like to hear from FPL why they do that.

No, it means that if his price was not in danger of changing I have no need to move earlier than I need to, the same as for any other player fit or otherwise.

        Scenario for you:

        You don't own Coutinho
You want to bring him in this week (he's not rising in price) and you were going to do it tonight
        You see the article

Do you still bring him in tonight or wait until as late on Saturday to get further news?

I was surprised he wasn't flagged sooner. After Mark's explanation over Hazard at least we know what to expect. Hazard isn't injured - we know this for sure - yet as per the explanation he is flagged. According to that however Coutinho should definitely be flagged. Like I said on the previous page, I don't agree with it, but I welcome the consistency.

Scenario for you, you have coutinho and Ericsson and want to get hazard who you now know is fit and you have just enough money to do coutinho to hazard if there are no price changes.

Everyone knows once someone is flagged they can drop very quickly in price (see Walcott recently) so do I sell coutinho on the basis he has been scanned and could be out for a period or sell the fit Ericsson.

Right now Eriksen is doing nothing and Coutinho is on fire. Best scenario is I sell neither and try and get Hazard another way.

Coutinho just as if not more essential than Hazard due to price for me and he's not confirmed out yet.

Yes you are concentrating on an imperfect scenario I painted a bit too much but the point is these spurious flags effect casuals as much if not more than they help them.

I don't overly care about the nti stuff as it is the same for everyone I just don't like unofficial information being treated as fact. Do you not agree?

Not really - it's just a slight doubt which I think there's enough of given the stories so the flag is fine. It really doesn't bother me that much.

If I'm completely honest neither the flag nor the NTI bothers me but I can at least see where people are coming from with the NTI side of the story.

With the flag, yes the stories aren't necessarily 100% confirmed but they do create a bit of doubt in peoples minds

With everyone trying to get to press first on this kind of news there are always going to be flags and people won't take them seriously if they majority turn out to be spurious.

Look I'm an engineer and maybe I'm a bit of a pedant but I like things to be clean and fact driven hence my joy when man in the stand bonus was binned so maybe I'm in the minority thinking all news pertaining to player availability (on fpl) should be substantiated by the clubs?

Gotta love the generic FPL "knock." There was a sighting at a hospital, and an alleged scan, and yet without any additional data, all that FPL can say is, "knock." Kinda says it all.

Thinking about it now he really should be flagged because of the state he was in.

    Up to 5am too.

Im assuming Coutinho's flag won't be removed till the game now because the Pool presser is already done unless he himself claims that he is fit to play.
So that shouldn't affect his price rise as people will still be getting him in I'm sure?

Luckily it doesn't look like any prices should change before tomorrow so I'll give myself another day.

It's going to take -8 to get to this:

        Pickford
        Alonso - McAuley - Lovren
        Hazard - Firmino - Coutinho - Allen
        Aguero - Kane - Austin

        Heaton - Capoue - Holebas - Amat

Pretty ugly still considering it costs -8....

Ibra to Kane is a no-brainer for you, mate. I wanted to scream at you in the scoutcast when you expressed reluctance. For a lot of us getting Kane means getting rid of either Aguero or Lukaku which is why it's a difficult one this week. For you it's a very easy decision imo. I'd probably captain if I had him. I'm actually contemplating Lukaku to Kane(c) for -4, if it was a suspended Ibra I wouldn't blink.

If I was put off buying Coutinho, on the basis of a knock that FPL has completely made up, and he bagged a brace, I would be seriously annoyed. At least detail the tenuous reason for the the flag correctly.
