With the last international break of the calendar year now finally behind us, we settle down to our usual pre-Gameweek members article this Friday evening.

First up, we analyse the main contenders in this week’s Captain Poll, before assessing the Opta numbers and Rate My Team rankings and suggesting some differentials to help solve your armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Man City’s trip to Selhurst Park ensures that Sergio Aguero is, once again, the favourite for this week’s armband.

Selected by 36% of voters, Argentine has scored twice in three of his four away appearances and faces an Eagles backline that, along with Sunderland, have yet to chalk up a single clean sheet.

Aguero played just 45 minutes of his nation’s recent couple of international, which bodes well for his pitch time against Palace.

A home clash against Swansea City earns Romelu Lukaku second spot.

Despite blanking against Chelsea’s resilient rearguard, the Everton striker – who warmed up for this weekend with two goals and an assist in Belgium’s 8-1 thrashing of Estonia – is backed by over 24% of voters.

Lukaku has been in fine form in front of his own fans, netting in three of four home appearances, and faces a defence that have conceded three times in all but one of Bob Bradley’s four matches in charge.

Eden Hazard and Diego Costa earn just 11% and 2% of the votes cast respectively as Chelsea make their way to Middlesbrough.

Subject to a huge bandwagon over the break on the back of five goals and two assists in the previous four Gameweeks, Hazard has been passed fit after sustaining a knock to the calf while playing for Belgium in midweek.

Costa has recovered from a groin problem in time for Sunday’s encounter and betters his team-mate by five goals to one away from home.

They might not have it all their own way on Teesside, though.

‘Boro have conceded just once in the last three, which includes clashes against Arsenal and Man City, and have been breached just six times in five home fixtures this season.

Alexis Sanchez collects just 6% of the votes for Arsenal’s trip to Man United.

That relatively low percentage can be attributed to doubts over his fitness prior to Chile’s clash with Uruguay in midweek.

Having returned to action by bagging a brace for his nation, Sanchez – who has three sets of double-figures on the road – visits a United defence with two clean sheets in eight.

Philippe Coutinho earns 3% of the votes for Liverpool’s trip to St Mary’s, though with minor concerns over a tight hamstring, handing him the armband carries a degree of risk. Team-mates Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane hover around the 1%-mark and could prove deadly captaincy differentials.

A home encounter with Hull City looks promising for Jermain Defoe.

The veteran’s goal and assist at Bournemouth means he has played a part in 77% of Sunderland’s strikes this season as he prepares to face a defence that’s conceded 13 times in five road trips.

Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne look ready-made differentials with 1% of the votes.

Tottenham’s frontman returned to action with a converted spot-kick at Arsenal and has netted in his last three league appearances ahead of a home clash with West Ham.

De Bruyne, meanwhile, has produced attacking returns in all four of his away appearances as City roll up to Palace.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Help please!

The creator of our mini league is deleting his account for disputable reasons. Any idea what happens to the league when he quits?

I just tried to delete my own account just to see and there doesn't seem to be an option anyway. There's only 10 or so in it so we would survive without an admin I suppose

Thinking about switching Ozil and Smith to Eriksen and Alonso despite no frees. Smith to Alonso should just about make the points back instantly, I'm down for a risk.

Also pondering Alonso > Mustafi for a hit. I have crazy idea that he can score, assist and have a CS in this game.

Benteke >> Austin for -4 worth it?

Not this week, because both are on penalties, so I don't see the advantage

      1. ZeBestee
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

the only reason is Benteke has been doing bad.. He misses simple chances and is a bit slower than he was 3 - 4 years back. Austin meanwhile bangs the goals as usual and even if he blanks, he still has good fixtures

I'm a matip fan, think he's one of the best headers in the league so will get 4-5 goals a season at least because Liverpool get a lot of corners. Then again, depends how much you need the extra money a west brom defender would give you, for example you could do Lukaku to Kane/Costa in a few weeks. I think all those you've mentioned are great options to be honest! McCauley can score goals too and the fixtures are great so either him or matip

Don't like the doubt around Aguero starting and I an't bring myself to captain Lukaku ever again (he still is a troll). Seems like it's Hazard then, although Middlesbrough are quite good at home. Can't argue against Chelsea's and Hazard's form.

There was a hot topic earlier, not there anymore. Anyone explain why? False alarm?

This is why it's beneficial to read the hot topic and the link to the article and not just look at the title.

It was a link to an article where it said nothing about Kun being rested, but the topic claimed he was possibly at risk of rest. 😉

Lol...no...there was not meant to be an alarm raised by us...it was just someone posted a link and we felt the discussion it would lead to would be of interest.

Based on an article published by MEN...

        http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-city-fixtures-aguero-guardiola-12197376

Which we don't endorse and isn't necessarily our opinion even though, if he brings a haul in and folk miss it, we will likely get blamed for bringing that article to anyone's attention in the first place via a Hot Topic.

Bloody press and there complete disregard for folk who take Fantasy Football as seriously as us!

            hehe...I didn't say that either. Necessarily 😉

Blimey. What a week. Can we just get GW12 done!

You're doing great, thanks. I do agree that a hot topic should be decided based on likelihood of 'hotness', not your assessment of the opinion. (unless it's an obvious troll)

    Better option ?

    A) Bench Coutinho, Play Anichebe

    B) AOA play both and bench Francis (stk)

I really want to play Anichebe probably the best chance of getting some points off him.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

    A) Smith > McAuley -4
    B) Play AOA with Capoue

    Heaton / Foster
    Walker / Mustafi / Smith* / Holebas* / Amat*
    Hazard / Firmino / Redmond / Allen / Capoue
    Aguero / Costa / Lukaku

    Grant, Heaton
    Monreal, Fuchs, Evans, Holebas, Amat
    Sanchez, Coutinho, Lallana, Shaqiri, Capoue
    Aguero, Costa, Deeney

At a bit of a loss. I thought my team needed a lot of work BEFORE this international break. Trying to avoid a hit too.
