With the last international break of the calendar year now finally behind us, we settle down to our usual pre-Gameweek members article this Friday evening.

First up, we analyse the main contenders in this week’s Captain Poll, before assessing the Opta numbers and Rate My Team rankings and suggesting some differentials to help solve your armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Man City’s trip to Selhurst Park ensures that Sergio Aguero is, once again, the favourite for this week’s armband.

Selected by 36% of voters, Argentine has scored twice in three of his four away appearances and faces an Eagles backline that, along with Sunderland, have yet to chalk up a single clean sheet.

Aguero played just 45 minutes of his nation’s recent couple of international, which bodes well for his pitch time against Palace.

A home clash against Swansea City earns Romelu Lukaku second spot.

Despite blanking against Chelsea’s resilient rearguard, the Everton striker – who warmed up for this weekend with two goals and an assist in Belgium’s 8-1 thrashing of Estonia – is backed by over 24% of voters.

Lukaku has been in fine form in front of his own fans, netting in three of four home appearances, and faces a defence that have conceded three times in all but one of Bob Bradley’s four matches in charge.

Eden Hazard and Diego Costa earn just 11% and 2% of the votes cast respectively as Chelsea make their way to Middlesbrough.

Subject to a huge bandwagon over the break on the back of five goals and two assists in the previous four Gameweeks, Hazard has been passed fit after sustaining a knock to the calf while playing for Belgium in midweek.

Costa has recovered from a groin problem in time for Sunday’s encounter and betters his team-mate by five goals to one away from home.

They might not have it all their own way on Teesside, though.

‘Boro have conceded just once in the last three, which includes clashes against Arsenal and Man City, and have been breached just six times in five home fixtures this season.

Alexis Sanchez collects just 6% of the votes for Arsenal’s trip to Man United.

That relatively low percentage can be attributed to doubts over his fitness prior to Chile’s clash with Uruguay in midweek.

Having returned to action by bagging a brace for his nation, Sanchez – who has three sets of double-figures on the road – visits a United defence with two clean sheets in eight.

Philippe Coutinho earns 3% of the votes for Liverpool’s trip to St Mary’s, though with minor concerns over a tight hamstring, handing him the armband carries a degree of risk. Team-mates Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane hover around the 1%-mark and could prove deadly captaincy differentials.

A home encounter with Hull City looks promising for Jermain Defoe.

The veteran’s goal and assist at Bournemouth means he has played a part in 77% of Sunderland’s strikes this season as he prepares to face a defence that’s conceded 13 times in five road trips.

Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne look ready-made differentials with 1% of the votes.

Tottenham’s frontman returned to action with a converted spot-kick at Arsenal and has netted in his last three league appearances ahead of a home clash with West Ham.

De Bruyne, meanwhile, has produced attacking returns in all four of his away appearances as City roll up to Palace.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Clyne - plays great most weeks without the FPL returns and Liverpool play brilliantly without the old fashioned clean sheet thing going on - Man U struggle to score against decent sides and plying 10 defenders doesn't help! Bournemouth, I feel, will struggle to score at Stoke.

Think you could look at replacing Matip next GW in all honesty. He's pricey for his points return.

Wouldn't necessarily want to change anything now, unless you're feeling confident in bringing in Brunt or McAuley for a cheeky stab at a clean sheet and maybe an assist or goal?

What do people think of this team? Transfers all done and confirmed with -4 hit and 0.4 in the bank.

Price in brackets is selling price.

    Heaton (4.6)

    Azpilicueta (6.0) Koscielny (6.2) Cook (4.9)

    Hazard (9.9) Firmino (8.6) Coutinho (8.5) Gundogan (5.6) Walcott (7.8)

    Costa (10.4) Deeney (6.9)

    Foster (4.6) Benteke (7.6) Gibson (4.7) Holebas (4.7)

I am quite likely to replace Benteke very soon. I was thinking as replacements either Austin, Defoe or Anichebe (depending on how he performs - only 4.5), Vokes or Bony. Giroud is a possibility if he gets starts and I also do the move stated below.

Another thing I am thinking of is taking Koscielny out within the few two weeks for McCauley with Bellerin out. However I have decided to see how Arsenal do without him first though. I'm not nailed on for doing and may decide to end up keeping him.

Any feedback would be appreciated although preferably either positive comments or at least with some constructive criticism.

    4. JohnnyMagrinho

OK ignore those comments, I know why it's done it now. Apologies, people.

So, keep Kosc and get rid of Azpilicueta for a cheaper defender, ideally below £5m as you get good value for money there, or ship them both out and bring in Alonso and cheaper defender.

Ideally you'd wanna be using the money you make on that to help you finance a move where you get rid of Walcott and eventually look at replacing Benteke or Deeney. Good budget move would be Austin, but maybe you'd want to try and accommodate getting Kane or Lukaku?

      1. HeroHitterofHeart
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

Thanks for the feedback. I only bought Azpi in this week. I bought him in ahead of Alonso as he has better chance of bonus points. A minor thought also is that he is probably the most likely person to replace Moses at Wing-back during the African Cup of Nations.

Walcott is a good shout although would like Arsenal cover. I'll have a look at how Arsenal play in near future. Potentially swap for Allen and then maybe Benteke out for Austin or (possibly Anichebe) which could even fund Deeney to Aguero in future or Kane as you mentioned.

Another option would be Benteke out to one of forwards mentions and Walcott to KDB.

        1. JohnnyMagrinho
          9 years, 8 months ago

The way the season has gone thus far is that you need to have - ideally (looking at a lot of high scoring teams) - two out of the top three highest scoring attackers in Costa, Lukaku and Aguero, ideally.

I always struggle to bring in decent defensive players early in the season and end up playing catch up at around week 5 or 6. I think there's good logic behind your Azpili shout, but it's probably 50/50 when it comes to Alonso.

Walcott's value has already dropped a bit, so if you think he's gonna have favourable fixtures and do well it's not a bad shout, personally, I have Hazard, Coutinho, Firmino and Redmond in my midfield but after this weekend I'll be bringing in KDB for Redmond.

I think the main issue is having more than one defender over 5m. I don't do it personally as I think you get better value for that kind of money on a 6m midfielder - clean sheets are something of a rarity in the Prem I feel!

Deffo try and upgrade Deeney or Benteke - I feel like you're missing out on almost guaranteed points there.

      How much ITB?

I'd say look at getting rid of Deeney ASAP - you can get Austin for less.

Antonio, Mustafi and De Gea seem like a waste of money to me. Can get decent alternatives without spending so much with a higher points return on them.

Really comes down to how much money you have to play with and whether you'll be playing against prices increases and falls and how you justify making a transfer against points and fixtures.

    I am very confused.

    Pickford | Jakupovic
    Bellerin | Lovren | Shawcross | Holebas | Amat
    Sanchez | Firmino | Coutinho | Chadli | Fletcher
    Aguero | Lukaku | Austin

I really want to bring Hazard in, but also need to make a defensive move.

I have gone off the idea of Brunt, but could plump for McAuley or Evans in place of Bellerin.

I kind of like the Alonso move that the picks have plumped for, but can't see anyway of getting him in without moving Sanchez on.

Is Sanchez --> Hazard and Bellerin --> Alonso a bit made with potential injuries to Coutinho and Chadli?

    1. Frank Black

Coutinho is with the squad so there's not much to be worried about i guess.

    2. JohnnyMagrinho

In my mind the only defender I'd go for in the £6m+ bracket would be Alonso. After seeing him play in the couple of games he's featured in he not only looks good going forward, but decent defensively and playing for a Chelsea team that looks solid at the back.

Brunt will be on corners and set pieces I imagine and he's going to be in midfield mainly. So you get good attacking value for your money, but he's nearly £5m. Depends on your budget. McAuley is a good shout as he's cheaper, gets a few headers and WBA might bring you a clean sheet every once in a while.

I think Hazard is a must. He looks ridiculous of late and he'll keep getting better - I'd say get him before he increases in price.

Can see Coutinho increasing too - yes he's a doubt but I don't think people will ship him out.

I suppose it comes down to how easy it is for you to bring in the more expensive players if they increase in price..

Thanks, but 0 in the bank. Nyom (place at risk) and woeful Swansea would be the only options.

I see. In that case I'd go with B unless you still have your aoa chip?

Thanks again. I do, but Coutinho's playing time puts me off using it.

TheKirkyLife on the Planet Swans forum says:

"I've got Lukaku as my fantasy Captain this week, hoping for a 5/6-0 thrashing of us."

I was looking on there earlier and I saw one post which made nervous as a Lukaku non owner...

"we are going to get ass r*ped by Lukaku without the lube"

General vibe is, let's say, not too optimistic.

The lack of infos about Coutinho and Lallana is really bugging me.

On the plus side, Metallica's "Hardwired...To Self-Destruct" is insane.

Yeah, i meant if he's injured beyond that and if so for how long.

Apparently Coutinho has travelled with squad to Southampton but Lallana hasn't.

So while it may not indicate whether Coutinho starts or not, it definitely hints that he'll feature at some point.

I'd say best case scenario is obviously a full game, but as he's traveled I'd say at least 20-25 mins run out in second half is worst case.

It's a bit of a gamble either way, surely, because if Liverpool are dominating the game and a couple of goals to the good at around the time you'd think Klopp would introduce him to the game, maybe he'll think not to risk him.

If you're in WC, would you do Coutinho to Firmino?

    Pickford (Jaku)
    Walker Evans Amat* (Smith) (Holebas)
    Sanchez Hazard Firmino Coutinho* Allen
    Kun Lukaku (Diomande)

    1FT £0.2m ITB

    a) Smith > Brunt (Double WBA, but good fixture over next 5 GWs, and can swith to Cedric if necessary)
    b) Smith > Nyom (Ditto above, but slightly less nailed and no attacking threat. Allows Allen > Snodgrass next week if it looks like Allen is back playing deeper again)
    c) Smith > Cedric (long-term option)
    d) Something else

Doesn't look like Smith is going down in price despite what we've been forecast. Personally I see him as remaining the best chance of getting assists from your defence so I wouldn't transfer him out.

You ideally want to remove Amat but I'd imagine you'd get £4.1m for him and with your ITB that only gives you 4.3 so you'll struggle. 4.5+ is where you can get value for money.

Personally I'd look at getting Sanchez off your books - you could bring in KDB and have at least £0.5m spare which you could use to fund a defensive move. Failing that you could look at Mane for £9.0 or Ozil for £9.6m.

Depends how attached you are to Sanchez, but really, for any defender you'd be able to get for removing Amat I don't think it's worth it - you would definitely have to get rid of Smith if you wanted a move to immediatelt affect you.

If you can afford Brunt it would be a good shout, or McAuley, Barragan etc... Even Francis.

Ideally I think removing Sanchez and bringing in Mane is a sound move and if you took out Amat you could even get Alonso at the back, too.
