Scout Picks

After naming the players under consideration in our Scout Squad article earlier this week, we reveal those to make the cut for our Gameweek 12 Scout Picks.

With the bulk of our 84 million budget reserved for attacking output, we have sought value between the sticks and once again turned to Stoke’s Lee Grant, who faces Bournemouth at the bet365 stadium.

Even though regular Potters keeper Jack Butland is back in training, his 4.1 priced deputy will be the custodian in Gameweek 12, before soon coming under threat for the number one jersey.

With the Cherries languishing among the bottom six sides for away goal attempts, we anticipate Grant could justify his Scout Picks spot with another clean sheet.

Goal threat dominates our defender selections.

With a goal in Gameweek 11 against Everton and as part of a Chelsea rearguard that has kept five clean sheets in a row, Marcos Alonso (6.0) has more than earned a place in the Scout Picks. The 3.5% owned wing-back travels to a Middlesbrough side that has scored just ten times to date.

FPL’s fourth highest owned defender Gareth McAuley (4.7) is among an elite group of six defenders who have claimed two goals. The West Brom defender hosts a Burnley outfit that boasts the lowest number of away goal attempts, with just a single goal on the road all season.

We had the funds to shop for Kyle Walker ahead of Spurs’ derby meeting with West Ham on Saturday evening but opt for his cheaper team-mate Danny Rose (5.9), who we believe offers greater scoring potential.

Owned by just 5.8%, the left-back tops the goal attempt table for defenders over the last four Gameweeks and has created more chances than Walker over the same period.

Declared fit earlier today after suffering a midweek knock with Belgium, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (10.1) takes centre stage in our midfield selection. The 28.6% owned schemer has amassed a peerless 49 points over the last four Gameweeks. It’s a brave FPL manager who progresses without him at this point and we feel he will sparkle again at the Riverside on Sunday.

Injury doubts in Liverpool’s midfield have propelled Roberto Firmino (8.7) into our thinking for the Reds’ visit to Southampton. With attacking points in his last three league away trips and returns in four of five outings, the 15.9% owned ‘false 9’ should provide ample cover of Jurgen Klopp’s vibrant attack.

Hull City start a kind four fixture run with a trip to Sunderland on Saturday, presenting Robert Snodgrass (5.5) with a chance to cement a place in our Scout Picks over the coming month.

With designated spot-kick taker Abel Hernandez absent through injury, the 3.9% owned Scotland midfielder adds penalties to his armoury as he look to improve a tally of four goals so far.

We had hoped to include Kevin De Bruyne ahead of Manchester City’s visit to Crystal Palace. Sadly, his 10.8 price tag proved too much, driving us to turn to cover Spurs’ attacking prospects at home to West Ham.

The 4.7% owned Christian Eriksen (8.1) may just provide a worthy alternative. Over the last four Gameweeks, no player has registered more goal attempts without scoring.

Our forward trio has been in place for much of the week and was never likely to budge.

Form, fixture and top ranking in our Captain Poll have combined to ensure that the 46.6% owned Sergio Aguero (13.2) takes pride of place among our striker selection.

The Argentine was largely rested while on international duty and visits Selhurst Park with a stellar away record. He has scored three braces this season on his travels, while Crystal Palace have conceded eight times in front of their home fans and are without a shut-out all season.

Romelu Lukaku (9.9) is another that demanded selection.

The Everton striker, who is owned by just over a third of FPL managers, has scored in all but one of his league appearances at Goodison Park and hosts a Swansea City side that have allowed nine goals in four matches under Bob Bradley.

Our final place is handed to 15.3% owned Jermain Defoe (7.4), who goes in search of a seventh league goal and 150th Premier League strike. The Sunderland forward hosts a Hull City side that have conceded 13 goals on their travels already.

We turn to the Toffees for our first two bench places, with 4.6% owned Seamus Coleman (5.5) claiming his berth. Even if the Everton defence is breached, the raiding right-back offers attacking prospects against the porous Swans backline.

Yannick Bolasie (6.1) offers a cheap route into the Everton attack for Swansea’s visit. The 6.4% owned Congolese winger has delivered attacking returns in three of the last four Gameweeks.

With doubts surrounding the fitness of West Brom’s Nacer Chadli, who underwent minor surgery during the international break, we’ve opted for 4.5% owned Baggies striker Solomon Rondon (6.5). Burnley have conceded nine goals in their last four away encounters ahead of Monday’s visit to the Hawthorns.

The Community Champion

The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season. The current champion to beat is VS10_, who had a 32-point margin of victory over us in Gameweek 6.

This week’s champion is Ziro who has opted for a 3-5-2 formation of: Foster; Brunt, Coleman, Cedric; Philips, Sigurdsson, Eriksen, Ozil, Mane; Kane, Aguero.

Daniels to anyone for a hit? Playing Alonso and Friend with Holebas and Amat on my bench...slightly worried.

    Also got Barnes (Burnley) as my very cheap Hazard enabling third striker (early transfer)...should I worry. Front seven stack up like this;

    Hazard, Sanchez, Firmino, Coutinho, Allen
    Aguero, Benteke

This RB vs Leverkusen is match is so good. Some of the best U23 talents in display here. Two goals were scored in the first four minutes of the match & RB have already conceded as many SoT (3) in the first 20 minutes as they had all season in one match. RB could also go top of the league by 3 points if they win today & Bayern lose vs Dortmund.

Yeah, he's always been injury prone & is actually just coming back from one over the IB. He's done very well this season & is having a great match here. Breaking down each RB attack & minimizing Keita's game

If you aren't captaining Aguero @ Palace why is he in your squad?

It's a perfect fixture for an Aguero captaincy. And he'll never justify 13.0m if you aren't going to captain him for games like that.

As someone now in their 3rd week without him I'm quite relaxed, it's not as edgy as you might think. You know that there will be some GWs when he does well and hurts you. But he needs to score a brace (or a goal and assist) to do that and if he isn't widely captained it moderates the effect.

In other weeks you can gain ground with the money re-invested, especially in weeks where Kun blanks. Alonso was in my team with his 13 points last week. He wouldn't have been had I kept Aguero.

I am enjoying the experiment anyhow.

Kane plus Toby v Kun & 4.0 def. If the rest of the team could just stay settled that striker spot could be kane/costa/Ibra depending on the fixture. Looks good on paper anyway.

                Quids in then. 🙂

Alonso played 17 games in his Chelsea position last season and delivered 3 goals and 3 assists in those 17. And having seen him live a few times now it's clear that LM/LWB suits him down to the ground.

It might be a stretch but I would consider the double with Luiz. He is playing really well (amazingly well actually) and I have to admit that it has surprised me, he looks like a different player. Sweeper (which he essentially is) suits him perfectly, he has cover when he steps into midfield (which he sometimes does), he can use his terrific range of passing (no surprise if he gets an assist or two), he takes a mean free kick and he carries some goal threat from corners.

I guess I'd probably play safe with a Spurs defender in your situation but the Luiz/Alonso double would definitely tempt me.

Yep. But then no Sanchez maybe. Or no Hazard. Something has to give somewhere and whoever you go without can hurt you in any given week.

Statistically Swans have performed better defensively over the last 4 than Palace and City are a far better attacking outfit.

Also judging by how poor Swans looked vs United, you'd imagine there'd be some sort of response.

      2. Ruth_NZ

Yes but that's not the point really.

No player can justify a price of 13m+ unless you captain them pretty often. Certainly when they have good attacking fixtures.

If you prefer Lukaku(c) when Kun has Palace (a) then don't you have to ask yourself how essential Aguero actually is to you?

              Consider it in context...

Is Zlatan better value than Aguero on current form?

I'd imagine that a vast majority general consensus on this would be a fairly definitive - no.

And if one is to sit on ones pulpit pontificating to the masses about whether Aguero is a good fpl team pick based on bring poor value, which Ruth's point really gets at (and of course Aguero is he's the best striker in the league), invest the money saved elsewhere.

Don't sit on the pulpit pontificating with a team that includes Joe Allen, Bolasie, and Bony.

People with Aguero have much better teams plus Aguero.

People can have him and non captain him, they can captain Lukaku. Why should they then not own Aguero? Ridiculous really. If they think Lukaku is the better captain why be governed by fear or player price that Aguero should be captained? At least owning Aguero in a non captaincy position covers in top 10 k ownership. The same isn't true of Zlatan because he isn't owned there.

He is saying Kun is bad value if you don't (C) him regularly. This is not really debatable, it's merely a question of mathematics. I agree that Lukaku is as good a (C) option this week, so yeah this week is a bad example tbh.
In regards to Allen and Bolasie; they are both great value, or atleast was. Bony is not looking to good, I agree.

You say it's not debatable in your opening gambit then in your second point you concede that it is in fact debatable. Lol.

Are you trying to prove my point?

It's not a question of simply maths. How's it maths?

If you have a squad structure and the right picks at the minute you can have a great Aguero team. But last week one might have thought i fancy Firmino to score really well. Should you not captain Firmino if you think that? Should Aguero be insta-captained if you own him? Surely to do so would be blind?

If the claim is value then Zlatan isn't a suitable alternative. And if value means money saved and a better team as a result then why have a weaker leading striker and overall a weaker team when the whole "theory" is that the team should overall be stronger than an "Aguero" team.

Allen and Bolasie aren't good picks with the wealth of midfield options on show in FPL.

TBH I am a little out of my depth here, English is not my first language. How did I contradict myself?

A player that cost 13m who brings in ~6.5PPG needs to be (C) fairly often to be good value.

Are you bringing Zlatan up because Ruth has him in his team? He is bad value (it was here I used a bad word 🙂 ), no doubt about that, but I don't think that changes the question about Kuns value.

I stand by my view that both Allen and Bolasie are, or atleast, have been good value.

I believe you contradicted yourself because on one hand you said you should captain Aguero regularly but that this week Lukaku is a valid captaincy option so maybe it's a bad example.

This proves my point. If you have the right structure you can have a very good Aguero team right now and your other options whether Sanchez Firmino Hazard Lukaku Costa whatever will have fixtures where they could deliver big points. I don't subscribe to the view that one most captain their most expensive player otherwise don't own him. That just doesn't make sense to me. Why would you not want to own the best player in the game if you can maintain a very good squad owning him?

And then I think you contradicted yourself again by saying Bolasie and Allen are great value by saying "at least were". So they no longer are? Poor options to me.

I used Zlatan as the example for the reason you stated and the midfielders for the same reason. Zlatan doesn't represent value say Costa/Lukaku/Austin represents value but have that with the big 4 midfielders. You have to have the big 4 if you don't have Aguero. In my opinion anyway.

I dont think anyway can preach the theory as the be all and end all and have probably the worst variant of it possible.

                        Regularly =/= always.

The "at least were" part was only to cover my bases, if they don't keep a reasonable PPG up. For the first 11 GW's, they have been good value.

I don't think you or your team has to be perfect, to voice a controversial opinion. They way you voice it though, is important.

Zlatan was a poor pick, but he did score 2 goals.

I have both Kun and Lukaku and cannot decide who to captain.

Lukaku v Swansea could be gold dust right?! Please convince me I'm making the right call!

definitely captaining. need to make non-owners in my league suffer and feel the pain. but yeah he really needs more than a goal in a GW to make him worth it any given week

ARSENE WENGER has to rest Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal’s crunch clash with Manchester United - or eat his words.

“I believe that with a hamstring injury we have to get access for our medical staff to the MRI scan to see what grade it is, how bad it is and make absolutely sure they don’t make any suicidal decision that could harm his future for two or three months.

“That is absolutely important. It’s a grey area between the national team and the club team and of course they look at their own results which I can understand but we have to preserve the health of Alexis Sanchez.

“He always wants to play and that’s where it is a more sensitive case because he’s always ready to play even when injured.”

I think the response to that says it all. You could say people get upset because they own Kun, but let's be honest, it's not hulk-worthy.

SCOUT PICKS CHALLENGE - GAMEWEEK 11

    GW11 results: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/14464078
    GW10 results: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/14427287

    ****** WHAT IS IT? ******

For those of you who haven't been around or aren't aware, every evening prior to the start of the gameweek FFS releases their picks of players for the gameweek, "Scout Picks", as well as 3 differentials before the first games to separate yourself from the crowd.

This is your way to have a bit of fun and challenge those scout picks with a set of your own (read instructions below). This will always open the day before the gameweek starts around 8pm, and whilst you don't have to play weekly, the more you play the better chance you have of winning!

Gameweek winners will also be awarded a spot in the Community Roundup article.

    ****** INSTRUCTIONS ******

Everyone can have their own scout picks (there is no limit on team value) but with one simple rule,

YOU CAN ONLY PICK ONE PLAYER FROM EACH TEAM
(yes, two of your players at least will be on opposing teams).

You can only have ONE submission, and your FIRST submission will be what is accepted. You also must respond DIRECTLY to this post (not to a reply on this post). FFS Scout Picks are automatically enrolled. Teams must comply with FPL formation rules and be submitted in an easy to read format, e.g.

    GK
    DEF DEF DEF
    MID MID MID MID
    FOR FOR FOR

Deadline for this gameweek is Saturday 19th November, 11.30pm.

    ****** SCORING ******

Regardless of number of applicants, scoring will be done by the following:

    1st place: 3 points
Top 4% of the population will rank "second" and score 2 points.
Top 10% of the population will rank "third" and score 1 point.

There is also a bonus point which everyone is eligible for. If you score higher than FFS' Scout Picks AND Differential Picks (i.e. 14 players), you will be awarded with a bonus point regardless of whether you were in the top 10% scoring positions or not.

Welcome to the game, and good luck.

    ***** THE STANDINGS *****

    1st - Too Many Tacos (14pts)
    2nd - Slippin' Jimmy (10pts)
    3rd - IanP1970 (9pts)

    Karius
    Stones McAuley Pieters
    Mane Hazard Gun Allen
    Costa Aguero Lukaku(c)

    Pickford Clyne Redmond Chambers

Should I be playing Pickford & Clyne instead of Karius & Allen ?
