It was always going to be a big ask.

With 37 points in his previous two Gameweeks, Alexis Sanchez had constructed a culture of fear amongst his non-owners, urging more than 380,000 to doubtless spend transfer points to move swiftly and capture his services.

Such explosive returns built expectation and paranoia in equal measure. It was a risk to overlook Sanchez and, having been burned by sacrificing his services after Gameweek 11, I was not in the frame of mind to gamble again.

I was not alone.

Sanchez topped our captain poll and was duly skippered by 17.3% of managers today – just 11,000 shy of Chelsea’s Diego Costa who proved the most popular pick of Gameweek 15.

Of course, we could have perhaps anticipated a significant regression in his output.

Stoke City arrived in north London having conceded just three goals in their previous seven Premier League outings. The underlying statistics backed them to frustrate the Gunners and perhaps stifle the threat of Sanchez.

To an extent they succeeded, although eventually the Potters caved in to goals from Arsenal’s other midfield threats – Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott.

That offered a reminder of Arsenal’s attacking promise and that, while Sanchez clearly has to be considered as the key force, neither Ozil nor Walcott can be totally overlooked.

The latter, in particular, continues to produce numbers that outperform his initial 7.5 price tag, or even his current 8.0 valuation.

Walcott still boasts more shots in the box and shots on target than Sanchez. We may suffer the frustration of rotation on occasions, but, barring Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, it’s difficult to find a midfielder in his bracket that can compete with the potential suggested by such numbers.

Sanchez is convincing, but we shouldn’t be blinkered to the promise elsewhere in Arsene Wenger’s midfield.

Appearing dejected when withdrawn by Wenger – Sanchez is currently showing real hunger and ambition in his play. For now, we will take the assist for Alex Iwobi’s third goal and look to Wednesday night’s visit to Goodison for a bigger return.

Tomorrow, the aforementioned Costa, along with Eden Hazard, backed by 17.5% and 9.4% with the armband respectively, will attempt to deal damage to the stubborn West Brom defence.

Significantly outscore Sanchez and it will create further doubt on the Gameweek 16 armband, with Chelsea at Sunderland and Spurs and Harry Kane welcoming Hull City to White Hart Lane.

Sanchez is just one key player embroiled in a fascinating phase of our season. The merry-go-round of in-form heavy-hitters took a major twist with the Sanchez Gameweek 14 haul.

Overlook him as our captain or, worse still, in our squads, and we will always live in fear of a repeat. Today’s modest return doesn’t change that: Sanchez can explode points at any time, perhaps against any opposition.

But it remains to be seen if the confidence in the Chilean as a captain remains strong should his big rivals deliver on Sunday.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yes, think they have to do them as part of their contractual obligations, more so with sponsors than anything.

    Nacho to Llorente
Yes or No (got Amat and Sigurdsson but would give enough in bank to do Siggy to Alli or Ericson or Lovren to Rose depending on game tomorrow)

    Hello, friends.

Some of you will remember an extension to Google Chrome I made a few years ago that showed some stats and ranking information for an FPL team. It hasn't worked this season, because FPL changed the way they supply data.

Today I'm relaunching the Gargatron, but as a website. The information available is the same as before. You search by FPL team ID. If you are unsure about your ID you can go to your points-page and look in the address bar of your browser. It's the number after /team/.

What I'd like to point out here is that the Gargatron is a tool meant to have some casual fun with, and not a website trying to compete with any community.

I'd also like to point out that the Gargatron is free, free from ads and not affiliated with any company or person except me. It does not require you to be logged in, saves no cookies etc on your computer, and tries to be as nice as it can.

For those who still have the Chrome Extension installed - it will still work, but what it does from now on is send you to the Gargatron website and make an automated search for the team you're browsing.

    So, then. Welcome to https://www.gargatron.com

Brilliant. This is a super-useful tool and I'm really grateful that you have resurrected it. Thanks.

Now let's see what people make of their defender PPG this season. The top teams in the last 2 seasons have usually beaten 5.0 PPG from defenders, often by quite a distance. If anyone is anywhere near that this time I'll be amazed.

        Where do you see that?

And is that 5ppg from every defender!? Seems like that would be tricky

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 7 months ago

Yes, overall better than 5.0 PPG from defenders. That's what most teams that end up in the top 10 have managed over the last couple of seasons.

Everyone likes to focus on attackers but defender PPG is actually pretty critical. You are likely to have between 23% and 28% of your budget invested in defence.

Sanchez - Hazard - Walcott - Phillips (De Roon)
    Kane - Costa - Benteke

Is Phillips and Benteke to Eriksen and Llorente smart and worth a -4 move? Or do I go with current team.

        How about in long term?

        Out: De Roon, Walcott, Benteke
        In: Sigursson, Firmino, Anichebe

So in practically it would be Walcott & Benteke versus Firmino and Siggy.

So annoying ive wanted siggy for weeks!
Is Firmino > Lallana and Gundogan > Siggy worth 4 points??

What about Nacho & Gundogan out, Siggy and a cheap midfielder, then you can keep Firmino as well ?

Possibly, will probably give Nacho the watford game and re-assess, will keep an eye on lallana tomorrow.

just be interesting to see where Lallana comes into it. Firmino was next to useless on the left side

yeah, think Lallana's movement will be great for the flow in Liverpool's attack. Something has been missing for the last few games, even though they've created chances

Using the Gargatron above, what's your total bench score and how many points better/worse off would you have been if you swapped Captain and vice captains?

Nacho got screwed by Pep today. If only Man City would play to feed their strikers. Aguero has been stuffed by Pep's philosophy - he should be scoring as many as Messi / Suarez in La Liga.

    1. Worzel Gummidge
      9 years, 7 months ago

Aguero has scored 1 less goal than Costa in 4 less games. You are just upset you got screwed by a bad pick (in hindsight)

Bringing him in tomorrow, not sure if it should be alongside Alonso and Koscienly or instead of Koscienly.

Was at the game today and that was a soft pen, Stoke wouldn't have scored otherwise, know he's not had a cs for a while but the fixtures are great soon.

Early thoughts on KDB + Gundogan > Eriksen + Siggy -4 to get a more balanced team?

    Costa Kane Origi

    Pickford De Roon Amat Holebas

Are people hating on Iheanacho already?

The game was lost when he came off, surely that means he's starting on Wed, if you bought him you know it was for 4 weeks that included Watford and Hull.

Mane has mid, eve, STO, MCI and then will abandon us. His away points have been limited two gws aside.
Meanwhile Payet has BUR, HUL, swa, lei and may just be getting going.

What would say are the better picks?

(I have Costa and Kane already, plus Lukaku but considering transferring out for Ibra).

Looking at MUs fixtures of the next 3 weeks they look very tempting.

        1. Worzel Gummidge
          9 years, 7 months ago

Costa and Kane are better. Your mid and/or defence must be lacking if you are planning on doing Kaku to Ibra.

Midfield is ok - Sanchez, Firmino, Siggy, Allen and Capoue.

The extra £2.2m just seems to be "wasted" on upgrading any of them (e.g. Allen or Capoue could only be upgraded to Son/Milner/Lallana/Antonio).

Also conscious of Aguero coming back and needing to fit him back in (swapping Ibra for Aguero would probably be easier given their relevant difference in cost).
