For a moment, we were beginning to believe it would never happen.

But Jonathan Moss had other ideas, perhaps, like me, he had been silly enough to overlook Diego Costa in his Fantasy Premier League squad.

We can’t claim that the Chelsea striker’s fifth yellow card and resultant one-match ban sent shockwaves through the Fantasy Football community – we were already in the brace position.

However, having navigated 11 domestic matches without an indiscretion, it looked as though Costa v2 was capable of making the Gameweek 19 curfew.

Now we have to consider our options.

The impact of the suspension is perhaps amplified by the fixture involved; the Boxing Day meeting with AFC Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge was potentially a platform for Costa to produce a big haul.

Then again, there was always the possibility that Antonio Conte would preserve the striker, if not in Gameweek 18, more likely for the visit of Stoke City that followed.

The Blues travel to Spurs in Gameweek 20 and, perched on the suspension tightrope; it would have been prudent for Conte to keep Costa out of the Potters clash and protected.

That’s perhaps a philosophical perspective on the current scenario – speculation to soften the blow.

Typically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a say in all this – he is now at the forefront of the Costa fall-out.

The Swede’s brace of goals at The Hawthorns has elevated his status and taken him to an impressive 54 points over his last six Gameweeks.

Even Costa, with his unerring consistency, pales in comparison, returning 42 over his last six starts.

The United striker had already built a case prior to his latest goals; he soared to the top of the “transfers in” column within an hour of Costa’s booking.

Clearly, with United facing Sunderland, Middlesbrough and West Ham before the FA Cup break and Jose Mourinho playing down fears the striker will be rested, Ibrahimovic appears poised to maintain his current output.

But for those who adopted Costa early, maximising his price increase, the decision is far from straightforward.

To move to Ibrahimovic now could force them to stick by the United striker beyond Costa’s return in Gameweek 19, should funds limit their option.

Arguably, Ibrahimovic deserves our faith, even if it does mean shedding Costa.

But benching the Chelsea man also has to be an option.

For many, that tactic will depend on the strength of their existing reserves or if they are willing to part with four points to strengthen in order to absorb Costa’s loss.

Certainly, with Ibrahimovic in the mood, the Old Trafford meeting with Sunderland looks a daunting prospect for his non-owners.

Similarly, should Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku deliver double-figures in their Gameweek 17 matches, they will doubtless attract some Costa traffic.

Kane visits Southampton while Costa sits in the stands, perhaps an unlikely venue for the Spurs striker to return heavily.

But Lukaku makes a trip to Leicester City who will be without both Christian Fuchs and Robert Huth in their already suspect defence. Surprisingly, the Everton striker is already fourth for transfers in before kicking a ball in Gameweek 17.

Costa has shed 50,000 owners at the time of writing. Clearly, an exodus of sorts is under way, presumably made up of those who can either avoid a big loss of funds or who are willing to suck it up, driven by the appeal of the Ibrahimovic form.

It will be interesting to see just how much of his 52% ownership will be lost and just how quickly Ibrahimovic can climb in the nine days until the next deadline.

But there is perhaps an added twist.

When you consider that Sergio Aguero’s return coincides with Costa’s in Gameweek 19, the option of climbing the Ibrahimovic rises as a means of earning precious extra funds offers an intriguing possibility.

Costa to Ibrahimovic and then to Aguero is just one potential route on the crossroads created by today’s events.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Heaton, Pick
    Alonso, Morgan, Holebas, amat, love
    Sanchez, Hazard, Payet, Siggy, Capoue
    Kane, Defoe, Origi
    2FT, 1.1ITB

    Any advice guys?
Worth holding on to payet? or any other options to look into.
Also , if Kane(C) blanks again, Kane to Ibra ?

I like this too. Kane has been my sacrificial lamb to jump on the Ibra train cos I think keeping Costa for the whole year is a good idea.

Can you afford to do Morgan to an Arsenal defender? Or maybe swap to Phil Jones? Either one is probably a decent idea.

Oh yeah. Other than Arsenal, all plum fixtures. What about Payet though, at 9.2 he has been too frustrating in 2 plum home fixtures.

Mm, you could double down on Arsenal w/ Ozil or indeed take a punt on Pogba. Lots of possibilities. Think you need at least 1 United player - I'd be looking at Jones in for Capt Morgan - and then maybe one more move. In terms of points, I think Ibra (c) next 2 GWs will yield an awful lot, so him in for Kane is where I'd go, then Payet can go out for someone else the week after next - he does have Swansea left after all...

    Plan Over next few weeks

    Firmino -> Phillips(5.5)
    Sigurdsson -> Coutinho(8.2)
    Costa -> Aguero(12.7)

26.7 in those 3 players right now. So, the transfers should leave around .4-.8 in the bank.

    Good Plan?

He was benched for a couple of games earlier in the season when KDB played up top instead. And with City getting Gabriel Jesus in as well, the whole thing is too risky for my liking for a 12m+ player

Hey TJ, interesting plan - West Brom have good fixtures on the horizon, so I'm thinking of putting Phillips in for Antonio.
On the others; will have to watch and wait on Cout getting off the ground running (think he'll be reintroduced slowly). Think Costa might well fit the category of "season keeper" personally - can you remove anyone else to get Kun back in?

        Foster Pick
        Alonso Cedric Britos Nyom Amat

Sanchez Haz Firmino Siggy D roon

        Origi Zlatan Costa

I just don't know how else to do it. Maybe Zlatan will go out of form. As I said above I think Kun will be most effective Jan/Feb bc of lack of Champions league.

People subbing out Costa for one week, way too short term reactionary, just ride it out. Using my sub to get a better 11 out, getting a Burnley defender in for the next 2.

    Next gw atm:

    Pickford
Alonso Walker Amat / Pieters 3.9
    Haz Sanch Siggy Antonio Fletcher
    Ibra (c) Origi / Costa

0.9 itb but 0FT. I did Kane out for Ibra before price rises.

Take a -4 to get the 3.9 out for a playing defender and go 4-4-2, or just leave it? Know you should never really take a -4 for a defender. However, as I said earlier on today, I'm thinking it may be time for Phil Jones to come in for the long haul, which justifies the hit - was thinking of Holebas as well because of his capacity to randomly net you double figures.

Any other move I could do?

    Thanks all!

Yeah I think so, plus United have a decent run to the end of the season so I fancy the double down. Think Haz will eventually be removed so I can pay for other players to come in, plus Walker may well become Bellerin very soon

Siggy is undoubtedly a class player and a top FPL asset in the midrange. I'd be very tempted by this too, and it'll free up some cash / bank your profit on Eriksen who always does his usual routine of looking great for 2-3 weeks then blanking.

If you have a good instinct on it I'd do it.

I'm chasing my ML leader. With a better TV, my team look stronger on paper but, frustratingly, he keeps extending point gap.

    Key differences as follows :

Him: Cech; McAuley, Pieters ; Antonio, Phillips ; Anichebe

Me: Pickford ; Holebas, Lenihan ; Siggy, De Roon ; Kane

I feel Kane v Anichebe is the key matchup here, but it hasn't worked yet. Any ideas for what should I do? Go 3-5-2 as him?

Know how you feel. I have a similar predicament where my team is far better / more valuable on paper but others around me are smashing it whereas my team keeps tanking. I've been responding by doing a lot of hits but I'm now adopting the "Ville Ronka" route of believing in my players lol

Erm, hard to assess how to help you with just that information. I think 3-4-3 tends to always be the best formation for FPL (my opinion - not proven hehe), and the way in which you've set it out implies that you both have a LOT of similarities in your teams.

Any way to make a big differential over your rival? E.g. Ibra in for Kane and getting those points? I'd be looking at trying to catch upcoming trends by looking at forthcoming good fixture runs (e.g. getting Bellerin in ahead of Arsenal's run) so you grab those points before he covers them.

      1. NATSTER

Thanks for the reply. I think I will have to control the frustration and adopt Ville Ronka approach too.

We both have key big hitters like Costa, Haz, Sanchez, Eriksen, and Origi, so it's hard to massively outscore him in a few weeks.

Hope to pick the right big differentials and gain advantage soon.

I'm thinking about Costa -> Ibra and keeping Kane as differential.

My SV of Costa is 10.8 and I think it's probably worth 2 FTs over the coming weeks to switch Costa / Ibra / Kane.

Hey Jafooli - posted above about this - I am keeping Costa and benching, and have the choice of either 2 of Amat (WHU) / Pieters (liv) / Fletcher (ars) or taking my 3.9 bench fodder defender and turning him in to a 4.8 to play with Amat. Think I'll probably have to take the -4 to get a decent 4-4-2 out, but that isn't too awful.

Can't be doing a sell Costa to buy back the next week kind of malarkey. Seems a waste of time!

Who do we reckon are the season keepers at this midpoint of the season? IMO we've got:

    1. Costa
    2. Chelsea defender
    3. Sanchez
    4. Keeper combo like Heaton/Pickford

Would really like to place Mane in that bracket, just because he's such a good player to watch. But probably not

      Foster Pickford

has worked the entire season for me up until 18-21 after that i think more smooth sailing until week 30. But not having to worry about keepers are great + they are 8.5 total

but now with an OR of 18K I think I can target under 5K, my best rank has been in 3K, wondering If I can beat that this season!

I kept Costa even I bought him at 10.6:

There is only one GW, Kane is up against a solid defence (Soton) and Costa's fixture is better. Such a waste of transfers for one GW when you want Costa back in GW18 home against Stoke!

Don't see it as a waste at all, also bought Costa at 10.6 and sold for Ibra who I will captain and then bring him back next week, if Ibra hauls as expected than its been far from wasted.

What I felt would be a waste would be to have 10.6 sitting on the bench doing nothing, Kane does score against good teams believe it or not and it makes no sense to sell an inactive big hitter to bench another.

No transfer is ever wasted if they bring a return.

Exactly, those of us who bought late bought with 4 yellows so should have had a strategy in mind for when it happens, the timing of it has actually been perfect when you take Ibra's form/fixture into account.

Kane has scored 20+ goals for two years in a row, Kane to Ibra was my planned move this week but I'm delighted to have the extra week with him while others will be one heavy hitter down, Spurs can go to Southampton and win when they are in the mood that's for sure.

I'm 100 points behind my ML leader and looking for a "safe differential" over the Christmas period. Teams with good fixtures are Arsenal, Chelsea, Pool and United. I'm really happy with my mid and strikers so defence is what I'm looking at.. 0.7ITB.

Me: Pick/Heaton. Walker. VVD. Holebas. Ake. Amat.

Him: Forster/4.0. Walker. Alonso. Lovren. Nyom. Amat.

Looking at Walker -> Bellerin, Azpi, Valencia, Clyne to go for an attacking defender (or BAP monster) in a good defensive team and hope for some returns. Thoughts?

So should i sign Yaya or Sterling.

Both good value. Yaya could be a great differential. They both have risks though

    DDG, jakupovic
    Mcauley, lovren, vertongen, kingsley, brown
    Mane, walcott, hazard, siggy, capoue
    Carroll, kane, costa

I have 2fts and wth costa suspended i was thinking of:

    A. Costa & walcott for origi & sanchez
    B. DDG, kingsley & capoue for courtois, jones & de roon but -4

I am saving my wc for 31st when costa & aguero r back.

    Your comments r most welcome.

    Have a good day.
    Thanks!
