We were braced for disappointment and, four matches in, the Gameweek has delivered just that.

While it would have been hopelessly optimistic to expect big returns from Saturday’s limited set of fixtures, it’s already clear that we may have to settle for consolidation, if not damage limitation, from Gameweek 34.

Middlesbrough have been quick to snatch the role of arch villains.

Brought in by 201,000+ FPL managers – second only to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford for transfer traffic – we started the day wondering if striker Alvaro Negredo could possibly grasp hero status. Sadly, it seems we already have our answer.

In truth, Gaston Ramirez is perhaps the real culprit behind Boro and Negredo’s miserable afternoon. The Uruguayan’s needless back-to-back cautions reduced Steve Agnew’s to ten men having already fallen behind to an early Josh King goal at Bournemouth.

That hindered their toothless attack and meant that Negredo would again be starved of service. Agnew’s side mustered a pitiful five attempts on goal, with Negredo treated to two of those efforts.

Meanwhile, at the back, Ben Gibson – brought in by more than 118,000 FPL managers – marshalled a defence that capitulated to concede four goals and return zero points.

With both Hull City and Swansea City earning victory, the concern now is that Boro may be on the verge of giving up the ghost.

They will face Sunderland on Wednesday for their second Gameweek fixture in what has the makings of a dead rubber. The loser will sure be relegated, the victor, in all likelihood, will be accompanying them. A draw would be useless for both.

Optimists among us will be willing Agnew’s side to lift themselves – to bounce back from today’s damaging 4-0 reverse with a convincing performance with goals and a shutout.

However, we have to question just how much they have left in the tank. We didn’t neccersarily expect profit from the trip to the Vitality Stadium, but we could hardly have envisaged such a fruitless defeat.

Over 155,000 (3.5%) put the armband on Negredo, including 27 of the top 100 FPL managers – Rashford, with 20, was the next most popular armband option. That is a staggering statistic and evidence of just how a double Gameweek can turn heads and warp the decision-making of even the leading managers.

To be fair, today’s big single Gameweek asset fared little better.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku started his clash with West Ham as the most captained – backed by 602,000+ (13.6%) of FPL managers.

No doubt buoyed by his record of nine goals in nine appearances against the Hammers, it was the Belgian’s statistic of just a single goal in his last seven away trips that proved a more worthy indicator of what was to come.

Luakaku mustered just a single blocked shot on goal as a dull London Stadium encounter passed by with a whimper. That was typical of a day of disappointment.

There’s still some way to go, but already the fears surrounding the fools gold of double Gameweek 34 have been realised. It remains to be seen if Rashford and Crystal Palace’s assets can change the outlook.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Appreciate any early thoughts on WC?

    Pickford, Foster
    Alonso, Stones, Blind, Yoshida, Stephens
    Sanchez, Alli, Hazard, Pedro, Sane
    Kane, Gabbi, Jesus

GW36: No double keeper, but Cech fixtures not appealling anyway.
    GW37: Pedro/Gabbi > Eriksen/Anichebe

How does this Front 8 look for WC?

    Sanchez / Hazard / Eriksen / Coutinho / Sane
    Kane / Gabbi / Anichebe

Plan is to monitor Jesus for the next 1-2 Gws and then probably do Cout & Anichebe to Jesus & 5m mid for DGW37.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

Mustafi > City defender. Arsenal have had a relatively sh!te defence this season. Playing twice in one GW changes nothing. Have you not learned your lesson with Negredo!!!. I'd also have DDG over Courtois as you have Alonso

    DDG - Jaku
    Valencia - Alonso - Baines - Amat
Sane - Son - Alli - Tadic - De Roon
    Ibra - Lukaku - Benteke

    1.4 ITB + 1 FT + WC + BB

What should I do about this lot since I obv need to get rid of Ibra. Rather not take more hits, thinking of WC now instead of GW 36. Or can I manage 2 more GWs?

Ye, i think i'm going with no United players. They're quite expensive, their fixtures are very tricky and Europa League will mean lots of rotation.

        1. UnitedFan
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

No rotation for DDG and you can afford him. Much better defence than Arsenal too. Cech isn't great value at all

I disagree. Cech has 1 more game than de Gea and has much better fixtures. SUN at home is almost a guaranteed clean sheet.

Reckon I could do 15 too, but also prefer King over any DGW'er close to his price & Lukaku v Watford (H) After this week's moves I'll have...
          DDG Pickford
          Cedric Alonso Stones Yosh Kone
          Hazard Sanchez Alli Sane King
          Gabbi Lukaku Kane

0.5 ITB so can upgrade Kone before 37 & switch DDG to Cech for 36 if I so wish.

He was a top defender. Scored a lovely overhead for Rangers, in an old firm Derby as well.

    Best Man City defensive option?

Clichy has been pretty nailed recently, although Kolorav was before than played only one of the last 6. Stones is solid but only if Kompany is out... Really want one of them, but will need to gamble I guess.

Thinking Clichy at the moment. Will also consider Stones

He has a fairly good record on baps when they keep a CS. I would love to take the risk on Kompany, but don't think it's worth it.

I have Rojo to get rid of, was thinking of doing it this week. City have a great run in. Now seems a good time.

I'd risk it. Clichy at least seems nailed. He's the best bet.

He does, but then so did Kolarov then suddenly 5 games without an appearance in the last 6. I'll wait until Friday, see how Komany and Stones are looking.

Stones if he's fit. I'm getting him on Wildcard and probably benching this week.

But he has Boro this week? Best fixture of the lot probably.

I too want a City defender, reasonably priced and cracking fixtures. If I was pushed I'd probably say Kompany is the best option, always an injury risk though. Pep was saying in the press this week that Kompany had "special qualities".

I'd love to own Kompany, but as you know, I can't afford to drop another transfer due to injuries after this week. He is a top player still, and a real goal threat. But he just never lasts anymore, I think Clichy edges it right now, followed by Stones. I'll wait till the end of the week on this one.

Could also do that, just don't have a Chelsea attacker:

        Cech, Jaku
        Alonso, Vertonghen, Yoshida, ____ , ____
        Sanchez, Eriksen, Sane, Zaha, _____
        Kane, Gabbiadini, _____

26.5m to fill the blanks with remaining transfers (two hits total between now and 37) Also considering double Chelsea defence, but I'd like at least one City defender and Jesus would be a nice differential. Using BB chip.

Have thought about that, I could also sell Zaha instead of TCarroll and get Hazard regardless. I want to see what United look like without Rojo/Ibra etc. I'm not sure they will be that great. Plus City and Chelsea have better fixtures and better attacks.
