Skipper Leighton Baines grabs the winner as Everton labour to victory in the first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie.

Here are the notes from a testing night for the Toffees.

Everton 1 MFK Ruzomberok 0

Leighton Baines’ deflected strike gave Everton something to defend ahead of what is likely to be a tricky trip to Slovakia for the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie.

While Ronald Koeman’s men were still getting to grips with pre-season, their opponents had already played one league match and beaten Norwegians SK Brann over two legs to earn their visit to Goodison.

So there was always a feeling that this could be a step too soon for the Toffees.

And so it proved.

Everton were slightly off the pace for much of the encounter, and it took the second-half introduction of new signing Sandro to bring some directness and intent into their attacking play.

Koeman handed competitive debuts to defenders Michael Keane and Cuco Martina, though Jordan Pickford – with just 45 minutes in pre-season behind him – lost out to Maarten Stekelenburg in goal.

Davy Klaasen was part of the midfield three in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

The returning Wayne Rooney played through the middle up front, supported from the flanks by Kevin Mirallas, who was handed set-piece duties, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Keane was assured throughout, Martina considerably less so, while Klaasen showed the odd flash of creative ability but might need to demonstrate a lot more – and quickly – should Everton finally land long-time transfer target Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Ruzoberok were resolute in defence and quick to counter, forcing a couple of smart saves from Stekelenburg before Sandro, who replaced Calvert-Lewin, changed the tie’s dynamic.

Rooney was pushed out to the right to accommodate the Spaniard, whose willingness to run behind the back four finally stretched the Slovakians’ defence, allowing the hosts to apply some sustained pressure from which Baines’ winner eventually came.

Post-match, Koeman was quick to praise the impact of Sandro.

“Sandro brought pace to the team, he showed good movement and that gave Wayne more freedom to play from the right side.”

But the manager also told ITV Sport that he is keen to bring in another striker – not what the 20.9% of FPL manager who own Rooney wanted to hear.

Then again, Everton’s opening schedule is sufficiently harsh – involving four of last season’s top six by the middle of September – that early investment in any of their assets looks decidedly risky.

A clean sheet could boost the stock of the 13.0%-owned Keane, while the goal from the ever-reliable Baines (10.3%) was another reminder of his Fantasy pedigree.

But major backing of Everton players looks to be a strategy for the longer term, or at least a good deal later than this very early competitive start to the season.

Everton: Stekelenburg; Martina, Keane, Williams, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin, Klaassen (Davies 86); Mirallas (Lookman 82), Calvert-Lewin (Sandro 61); Rooney.
Subs not used: Pickford, Jagielka, Holgate, Barry.

Feeling pretty close with this squad for GW1 - planning to WC after GW7 for the international break:

    Foster / Elliot

    Otamendi / Cedric / Daniels / Dawson / ((Hunemeier))

    KDB / Coutinho / Mhki / Willian / ((Carroll))

    Kane / Lukaku / ((McBurnie))

I'm not 100% on Mhki, but seems to be doing well in pre season - so little alternate 8.0 options, and not sure if i downgraded to Zaha where the extra 1.0 would go :/

The forwards under 10.0 aren't really inspiring me: Benteke has burned me in the past, Defoe has some tough fixtures in the opening six, as does Hernandez, Austin's not guaranteed minutes. Gayle is just meh.

It's either heavy up top with Kane, Lukaku and Jesus, or it's a 352 I think.

Does anyone know what time the drafts start if you choose to enter a public league in FPL Draft? Is there a way to choose a time you’d prefer and be allocated to that league or is it random?

    Cheers

    1. Gomolon
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 9 days ago

Mine started at around 3 or 4pm UK time - Once you enter you have 48 hours to pick your list. If the time elapses and you have less than 8 players in the draft then the 48 hour clock starts again

FanDuel NOT running money contests for UK customers this season.

Money to be back in your accounts (or on the card you paid with) within 7-10 days. Keep an eye on it I advise. After the Mondogoal debacle, I don't want any more of the community losing out like I have, so just keep an eye on it. FanDuel communications are good though, won't be any issues with them I am sure.

Is anyone else a little concerned about spurs assert? Trippier is a no brainer, but kane, Ali and Erickson I'm not so sure. Kane is a notorious slow starter, I think he has scored 1 goals in 3 pre seasons games and that was a penalty. Spurs have 2 tricky opening fixtures with Newcastle away and Chelsea at home, in a new stadium. I'm not sure the acquisition of kane or other premium spurs asserts are a necessary pick especially in the first few weeks.

I'm not sure either but cant find any decent option, so just going with them and switch later on if required

Injury + No rest (England tournaments) are the symptoms. Newcastle away is a plum fixture for Kane IMO. Could be 1-4. I've never really liked Spurs defensively. Until last season. Walker's a huge miss. Eriksen and Alli are safe bets.

I think there are plenty of other options tbh. Up front with aguero, lukaku, lacazette and Jesus. In midfield you have kdb, Salah/ countiho, Willian etc. I'm thinking that if they do start well then I can wildcard and get spurs in, I honestly don't think they will.

I disagree with the fixture against Newcastle, there back in the prem 50,000 jordies for first home game back in the prem they will be right up for it!! And then Chelsea are looking solid. All just my opinion

Is anyone else not convinced on Trippier, or am I the only one?

    I can only see Spurs getting 1 clean sheet in the first 4 games;
    Newc - A (2+ pt)
    Chel - H (2 pt)
    Hudd - H (6+ pt)
    Evert - A (2 pt)

Considering doubling up on West Brom, Soton or United. Maybe even swapping him for Monreal as the arse has tightened up 😉 and they have decent fixtures.

It's the best back 4/5 in the league and who wants to be chopping and changing defenders in the first 6 gameweeks?

I know they had a great defence last season but I've got a feeling it may be different.
Just think there's better value knocking around

Fantastic defensive record and Trippier's attacking stats speak for themselves.

At 5.5 he is an absolute steal.

He is good value I've got him in my team, just wondering if Monreal could be better

I made a similar calulation... but I could see a clean sheet at Everton.... Everton seems a bit blunted and have all these extra Europa games, plus spurs could be enjoying the away fixtures a bit more after the first Webley game.

oh... and I feel Kane and co might have a slight score to settle with Newcastle following that end of season embarrsement last time they played.... look how they stormed through their last GW38, and I think that was partly because of the Newcastle 5-1

So, strong defense, looks nailed, and good potential for returns (Def and Att) in 3 of the first 4 GWs

    A) Sane + Kane
    B) KDB + Jesus

    Have Alli as spurs cover.

I like B. But I'm starting with Kane cause it's an easy downgrade, would be a pain to get him in if he has a stormer first game and he seems to be a (slight) differential

Been away the last couple of days, could i get a quick RMT to see if it needs any changes?

    Begovic - Elliot
    Alonso - Bailly - Trippier - Cedric - Long
    KDB - Coutinho - Willian - Phillips - Carroll
    Kane - Jesus - 4.5

Not too sure on Phillips, contemplating switching to Fraser and using the .5 to bring in ayew. Thoughts?

      Phillips > Jacob Murray
      4.5 > Ayew

Looks good.... I don't see any major flaws.

Personally I don't like have non playing picks in my team to save 0.5, but that is risk you take... if you spread the cash well it should pay off.

And... I'd rather have Phillips than Fraser. Set pieces for a West Brom team should equal points.

Would love some confirmation on last seasons main man Siggy, if he does go over to Everton, would anyone be considering him?

At 8.5 he is offering better value than Cout, Mane & Ozil.. imho.

not at the start of the season.....
But at 8.5 he is competing with the players priced at 9+ in my team..... most of my funds are tied up in Forwards and Defense and I can only spend 8+ on 2 mids max. I don't see Siggy ousting any of the current crop any time soon.

Yeah, I'm glad of Everton's bad run of fixtures as it allows us to process what's happening - he is promising though, even if he stays where he is.
He's on my watchlist for the timebeing

would be grateful for your views on this team

    Foster (Elliot)
    Trippier, Bertrand, Daniels (Yedlin, Rangel)
De Bruyne, Alli, Willian, Phillips (Loftus-Cheek)
    Lukaku, Aguero, Chicharito
