Goals and assists in the pre-season friendlies sparked much debate among the community over the past week, as two notable big -hitters showed their class to get the locals chattering.

We look back over those notable discussions in our review of the week’s Hot Topics, while also highlighting another set of articles from two regular scribes.

We also bring news of an exciting – and rather epic – new community tournament.

The Community Articles

The player ownership debate was once again all the rage this week, with Red Arrows setting the agenda with his hugely acclaimed Hot Topic, a discussion which followed hot on the heels of a new updated article from Milvus which scans the current movers and shakers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) market.

Elsewhere, we saw a debut community article from YTFC_Scratch who offered us insight into his own struggle between trusting his emotions and gut instincts next to putting faith in mathematical algorithms such as our own Rate My Team. A great new addition to our community contributors, look out for more from Scratch next week.

Finally, our resident Draft game expert Pav A Nice Day has delivered once again, providing another essential guide that breaks down his top ten tips for Draft Day. This is his third article submitted this summer and follows on from his perfect player list.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

That lauded thread from Red Arrows was one of many key discussions that took place this week, with big ticket Fantasy assets hogging the attention.

Ironically, we’d already laid the groundwork for what was to come by asking you how much credence you put on pre-season form and how it influences your decision-making.

It didn’t end there, with this Hot Topic from The Fantasy Freak also pre-empting events and discussions to come. He asked whether we were overlooking Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso and, just two days later and following a goal against Bayern Munich, that subject resurfaced.

First, Rupert The Horse provided some vital analysis of the Blues wing-back. Then we asked if, even with his price of 7.0, Alonso was back in the game and returning to our initial squad line-ups.

Then it was Kevin De Bruyne’s turn to shine. His stellar performance and two assists in Manchester City’s stunning 4-1 victory over Real Madrid opened our eyes, once again, to the Belgian’s appeal and we swooped to chair the discussion. That extended later in the week with AceK1ght’s excellent post on the potential routes into Pep Guardiola’s stellar attack.

Following that, Kuntheman offered his views on City’s likely line-up and our options for navigating their notorious rotation policy. Meanwhile, IMember chose to focus purely on the debate raging over the City strikers, underlining his view that “Pep loves Jesus”.

Away from City, Distinctly Average was anything but with his superb post that examined our midfield options, confessing that he was troubled by the array of options on offer. Deulofail then followed up by suggesting that we were being blinded by the cast of 7.0 candidates.

Switching to the strikers, AceKn1ght returned with another popular post on the merits of West Ham United’s new capture Javier Hernandez – a player we know well and who seems perfectly suited to the role of third striker in 3-4-3 setups.

“Little Pea” offers potential, a word which sums up Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford. Overshadowed by new team-mate Romelu Lukaku, Forever Mirin certainly made a strong case to us to consider the starlet striker in his midweek Hot Topic.

While that pair are both prospects for next season, Spurs’ Harry Kane is undoubtedly a proven commodity and yet Aggero was on hand to draw our attention to the fact that pundits have claimed that the striker will be unable to sustain his scoring form. It’s fair to say that I, and many others, were not ready to accept such a theory.

Finally, and on a lighter note perhaps, this fabulous post from 1569Tippins describes a nightmarish scenario that might just haunt other experienced Fantasy managers. Tippins describes how he’s been refused entry to his work’s cash league on the grounds of his expertise, with his colleagues insisting that he accepts a handicap if he is to enter. Extraordinary stuff and a story we’re keen to track.

The Members’ Tables

FPL Virgin hogged the limelight when it came to Members’ tables this week, donating no less than three excellent new public offerings for our perusal.

He started with this view of Bournemouth’s defensive options. He followed that up with an effort which analysed those players assured of starting roles in his “Nailed On” table. Meanwhile, the third table looked at those players hooked off before the 90-minute mark, with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard topping the ranks of his “Never Finishes A Match” analysis.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There was big news this week with the launch of a first tournament from the new Community Watch committee. The aptly-named Community Watch Tournament is built around the concept of a head-to-head league made up of 20 teams, each with seven to 10 members.

If you’ve ever played one of the classic FFSUEFA team tournaments then you already know the gist. If not, then you really need to check it out and get involved.

Elsewhere, PDM is still looking for those who have finished at least one FPL season within the top 1,000 to join his Top 1K Any Season league (21265-6670), and those with at least one top 10,000 finish are invited to join Red Lightning’s Top 10,000 Any Season league. (757-400).

Also, Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing contest (44937-13340) is still open for entries, clocking up over 2000 so far.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head-to-head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

None of the above. Sterling will be rotated and WP is a weak choice. Maybe Lanzini or Zaha for A and Ritchie or Gross for B

Thoughts on this massively top heavy team please

    Hart
    Trippier Cook Hegazi Bertrand
    KDB Carroll Salah
    Kane Lukaku Jesus

    Elliott RLC Chalobah Rosenior

I know it looks massively unbalanced but I kind of like it and think if Carroll and/or RLC end up in the number 10 type role it could be viable?

Weakest mid i have seen ever..not as if you adding premium defence like bellerin/alonso...give another shot..too many cracks like salah hegazi

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm definitely trying to cram in one too many big hitters. I just see so little value in the mid price options this year. back to the drawing board again!

Definitely not back to the drawing board, you have a decent template that just needs tweaking. I agree about the midfield situation and am currently on 9.5, 7, 7, 5.5, 4.5. Some Good value is possible, another option could be premium defenders?

Pretty good if Sig leaves SWA not bad at all. I would be careful for Hart only, Adrian is good and there could be a fight for first place (Something that also happened last year).

Move out Kane & KdB, bring in Alli/Eriksen (City & Spurs covered) and use the cash for upgrading to a proper 3rd mid and elsewhere.

Plenty of good 4.5 defenders like Francis, Mee etc too

    Foster, Fab

I like it, dont know much about Fraser though, Neither if he is nailed on nor his exact position. If you know he ll get enough minutes and be behind the strikers you are gtg, else i would try to find a better alternative. The newly promoted teams have some decent choices.

How does this look? Decided to go without Chelsea def since up to 8th fixture they ll probably concede in all but 1-2 games. Manchester teams could hurt me but there is too much rotation for my taste and Alexis' possible departure would make Ozil imperative. Thoughts?

    Begovic, Hart
    Alderweireld, Ake, Monreal (Suttner, Hunemeier)
    Lanzini, Salah, Ozil, Alli (Carroll)
    Kane, Benteke, Mounie

Cheers, i changed 3 players yesterday had Chicarito + Zaha + Cahill -> Benteke + Lanzini + Monreal. I just want to check Chicarito first (he ll probably be ok but hasnt started a game for WHU yet) and having Lanzini could cover the away goals for WHU. Plus Benteke is a striker i would like to own for the first GWs it was also a matter of ownership i believe Zaha's is extremely high for his potential. Could backfire ofc but it sounds more logical to me.

Fair play, too be honest I was nitpicking seriously and I am leaving Hernandez out of my gw1 squad for the same reason. I've gone for Austin + 0.5 ITB in case I want to make that move. Good luck!

I quite like that. I'd personally do do Toby to Trippier and either Ozil or Alli to KDB but I think this is the best team I've seen so far!

Cheers, wouldnt change Toby to Trippier again for ownership reasons. I fancy Toby to starting score again from corners although Trippier's value is incredible. I also believe Spurs will get another RB Trippier must have a backup with so many games to be played. As for KDB, he could punish me, but in this stage wouldnt prefer him over Ozil or Alli.

What are your thoughts on this starting X:

    De Gea
    Trippier Kompany Kolasinac Daniels
    KDB Salah Willian
    Kane Kaku

Plus a 3-way rotation for the last spot between McArthur/RLC, Carroll and Dunk. Rest are benchwarmers in Elliot and Fletcher.

I don't see why that can't work. If it doesn't, you can always change it as the season progresses or if you use your wildcard early. Fletcher was sold, so you'd have to replace him.

    RMT

Fabianski (Paul clement doing good work)
Sub Elliot ( 4.0 nothing else)

Bailly (man utd fixtures, clean sheet and bonus )
    Trippier ( attacking points)
Daniels (bmouth more solid with Ake and Bego, attacking points )
Sub: Dunk ( bah most solid defensively for promoted team, good fixtures)

Eriksen (dead balls, creative, long shots l, high ppg)
Coutinho (dead balls, long shots , high ppg)
KDB (dead balls, long shots , high ppg, good fixtures)
Zaha( high ppg per price ratio, attacking)

Sub: TCarrol ( set to assume more responsibilities if siggy is gone , should be taking over set pieces)

Lukaku ( focal point of elite attack, maybe ok pk duty, good early fixtures , high ownership)

Jesus ( attacking team, value vs Kun and Kane, high ppg, good fixtures)

Sub: 4.5 fwd ( the only weakness in this team , can't have best of all world)

Comments please.... your inputs are highly appreciated.

Really like it - the lack of Kane bring the obvious point.

Fabianski pick is an interesting one. Think there are a number of overlooked options at 4.5 - Gomes as well.

Worth keeping an eye on Suttner instead of Dunk? Attacking full back with a better disciplinary record.

Possibly consider Kolisanac as an alternative to Bailly?

Coutinho could be Salah. Eriksen could be Alli. But you know that....

RMT. Pretty much set on this lot. Hopefully no injuries. Mane and Austin will be Monitored

    Forster|Elliot
    Trippier|Lindelof|Daniels|Mee|Lascelles
    Mane|Alli|Willian|Zaha|T.Carroll
    Jesus|Lukaku|Austin

Will be having Laca instead of Jesus for first week only and will then shift to Jesus for gw2
Mane Austin could be Salah Chicha

No they don't, they just played that way against Spurs to match up. Not going to play that formation against likes of Brighton.

Morning everyone! Have loved reading everything on here over the last few weeks. Great to be back.

This is my first RMT. I'd say I'm 70% happy with it.

    Foster (Elliot)
    Alonso Trippier Ake (Dunk ,Rangel)
    KDB Willian Zaha Lanzini (Carroll)
    Kane Lukaku J-rod

    Thanks!!

As long as you are happy you can replace Willian at that price point, I would say nice team. Unsure about J-Rod but best striker in that price bracket, maybe see if you can get to 6.5 3rd striker?

The idea was to downgrade Willian and upgrade Zaha to Eriksen if needed. We'll see.
        Thanks for the advice guys!

Ps. I live in Southampton and watch them a lot. I honestly feel they'll struggle this season, with clean sheet and goals, no matter what the fixture is.

Went to uni there a couple of years back, great place. I was at the Stoke match and it was painful viewing at Times so I agree with you. Good luck for the season!

              You too!
I can't see me improving on my FPL 800th place last season though.

On that currently. For no reason at all I think Sanchez will have a slow start.

    Anyone else going triple City?

They look delicious this season, arguably quite easily the most potent attack, they will thump teams 4-5 to nil this season and won't stop. Despite some so certain on rotation, there is a few players that will play 95% of matches, and that's good enough for me.

Ish... certainly won't be the team with the most clean sheets. I except them to win the league and league winning defenders always seem to do well. If you buy Mendy/Walker/Kompany you can expect attacking returns anyways.

Triple City for me and an eye on early fixtures for this latest incarnation of mt madcap 5-2-3. What do you think?:

          Ederson (Elliot)
          Kompany, Kolasinac, Trippier, Bertrand, Dawson
De Bruyne, Pogba (Iwobi, Carroll, RLC)
          Kane, Lukaku, JRod

          🙂

I'd go double attack rather than double defence personally. Also not a fan of the formation but it looks quite nice actually. Not keen on the Pogba pick either.

It's a nightmare trying to second-guess Pep's starting XI. Kompany and Ederson are far more nailed than any attacking options. I prefer Mkhi to Pogba but again, Pog's guaranteed 90 mins every GW and Mkhi isn't secure.

Thinking to go with Milivojevic instead of Zaha.

I would actually consider Puncheon at the same price.

Club captain, creative midfielder in an attacking team. Indirect free kicks and corners.

I think Milo actually played in defence yesterday (in a back 3).

he hasn't got an assist in two years or something stupid
