After checking out the goalkeepers, budget defenders, mid-price defenders, premium defenders, budget midfielders, mid-price midfielders,
premium midfielders, budget forwards and mid-price forwards, our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list concludes with analysis of the premium forwards.

Winner of back-to-back Golden Boot awards, Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane merits his place as the most expensive option for our 15-man squads.

As evidenced by his output in the previous campaign, the Spurs frontman is arguably now the most reliable points scorer available.

The only player to score at least 10 times both home and away, Kane’s average of 7.5 points per match (ppm) was more than any other player in 2016/17.

He’s scored 21, 25 and 29 goals in the last three seasons since establishing himself as the lone forward for the London outfit and also offers spot-kicks as another string to his bow.

Although team-mates Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli, at 9.5 apiece, may well emerge at the top of the midfield pecking order, Kane’s captaincy credentials seal the deal for us.

Rivals will emerge once the season is underway but, before a ball is kicked, Kane is unquestionably the most assured captain selection.

A summer move to Manchester United has persuaded over 48% of FPL managers to acquire Romelu Lukaku (11.5), making him the most popular player in the game.

The target man has scored three times over the summer, including a consolation in last night’s loss to Real Madrid, to strengthen the notion that he can kick on from last season’s 25 goals for Everton.

Certainly, that huge ownership, allied with United’s kind opening schedule – they avoid all of last term’s top six in the first six Gameweeks – means that overlooking Lukaku could prove costly to our overall ranks.

A conversion rate of 22.7% in 2016/17 also suggests he’ll add a cutting edge to the Red Devils’ attack, given that Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted just 14/4% as the spearhead of their attack last season.

Yet many will be hoping that one of Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan can make an impact in midfield, given their relatively kind price tags of 8.0 apiece. The latter, in particular, has impressed over pre-season, bagging three goals and as many assists.

Over in the blue half of Manchester, the versatile Gabriel Jesus currently has the edge over Sergio Aguero due to a number of factors.

Arriving at the Etihad Stadium in the winter transfer window, the Brazilian’s average of 6.7 ppm was second only to Kane and bettered Aguero’s 5.6ppm – despite the latter scoring 20 times in his first season under Pep Guardiola.

Jesus was hugely consistent last season. He produced returns in seven of his eight starts, with the only exception against Bournemouth in Gameweek 25, when he was forced off injured on 15 minutes.

At 10.5 to Aguero’s 11.5, he’s also kinder on the budget, and arguably, with his versatility, he looks more immune to rotation than his fellow South American.

Jesus also offers an option out wide if City roll out a 4-2-3-1, should Guardiola continue with his recent 3-4-2-1 set-up and employ the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva or Bernardo Silva in support roles. Meanwhile, Aguero’s pitch time through the middle could increasingly come into question.

De Bruyne (10.0) could prove a hassle-free alternative if you’re spending big in midfield.

The Belgian started more times than any City player last season on his way to earning 21 assists and has been quick to replicate that form over the summer by serving up four assists. He’s the most popular City attacker by some margin, sitting in 25.8% of squads compared with Jesus’ 13% and Aguero’s 10%.

Arsenal’s big-money signing Alexandre Lacazette (10.5) looks set to claim the lone striker role ahead of Olivier Giroud (8.5) as Arsene Wenger looks for more mobility up front in his new 3-4-2-1 formation.

The new arrival bagged 28 goals for Lyon last season and boasts a strong record of scoring penalties, having netted 11 spot-kicks in all competitions in 2016/17.

There are two main factors that go against him right now, though. It remains to be seen just how quickly that Lacazette can adapt to a new league, while the future of Alexis Sanchez will also clearly have a major bearing on how we view the Gunners’ prospects next time around.

Remain at the Emirates and our money is on the Chilean (despite a loftier valuation of 12.0) to continue as Arsenal’s go-to option after he finished the season as top scoring player in FPL.

Similar to Lacazette, Chelsea’s summer signing Alvaro Morata also finds himself in new surrounds after arriving on the back of 15 La Liga goals for Real Madrid.

Given that Michy Batshuayi started a single league match under Antonio Conte last term, it’s a fair assumption that the Spaniard will take his place on the teamsheet in light of Diego Costa’s imminent departure.

Yet a lack of pre-season minutes suggests he could be eased into contention, as witnessed by his minutes off the bench against Arsenal in Sunday’s Community Shield loss.

Indeed, with Eden Hazard due back from an ankle injury in September, only 8% have considered Morata so far. Priced at 10.5 to the new arrival’s 10.0, there’s every likelihood that Hazard – who should also offer the security of spot-kicks – will continue as our preferred route into the champions’ attack.

A late-season transformation under Craig Shakespeare helped reignite Jamie Vardy’s (8.5) Fantasy appeal. After toiling with Claudio Ranieri at the helm in their title defence, the Foxes’ frontman went on to average seven points per match with the new manager in charge, serving up eight goals and five assists in 13 outings.

Granted, the schedule could be a lot kinder. Clashes with Arsenal, Man United and Chelsea in the first four have kept Vardy under the radar at 4% ownership. If he can maintain momentum and reprise the title-winning heroics of 2015/16, the Foxes striker may yet have a part to play in our seasons.

Re-classified as a forward this time around, Roberto Firmino faces strong competition from a Liverpool midfield that includes Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.

On the upside, at a cost of 8.5, he’s cheaper than that trio and was the Reds’ number one for both shots inside the box and key passes last time around.

There’s also the hope that Firmino could now also be on penalties for the Merseysiders, a theory based on his recently converted spot-kick against Athletic Bilbao with James Milner on the pitch.

Firmino also boasts some decent summer form, with two goals and three assists over pre-season. Yet there’s no doubt that the Brazilian – who has scored just 10 and 11 goals over the last two seasons – faces a tough task to emerge as the go-to option among Jurgen Klopp’s charges.

The main concern undoubtedly surrounds the allocation of budget. Firmino appears to be a gamble as a second striker option, while selecting him as a third forward would likely severely limit midfield funds.

I'm starting to think that Josh King might make us all feel a bit silly in the next couple of weeks. People seem to have gotten over their initial aversion to Firmino being re-classified as a Forward, but the same thing hasn't happened with King. Like Firmino, he has a promising opening pair of matches in wba/WAT - King scored in both of those fixtures in 16/17.

A prevailing argument against King has been the assumption that Defoe will start up front, and take over penalty duties. However, Afobe scored four times in pre-season, and arguably offers more to the team as a whole than the former Sunderland man. Eddie Howe may well look to continue the partnership of Afobe and King for at least the start of the new campaign.

In any case, whether he plays with Defoe or Afobe, King is surely nailed on behind the striker. He was also hardly reliant on penalties last season, as he scored just twice from the spot. Whoever does take them should do well though, as Bournemouth won 10 spot-kicks last season, more than any other team.

King played just off the main striker in most matches last season, scoring 3 in 5 starts up front by himself, and 11 in 21 as a second forward. His appeal should be clear if you look at what his points per start (PPS) would have been if he were listed as a Forward last season, taking into account changes in points for Goals, Clean Sheets and Bonus. Below, I've compared King to a few of the alternatives in a similar price bracket, and have also converted Firmino's PPS to reflect his re-classification.

    Price - Forward - PPS
    8.5 - Vardy - 4.8
    8.5 - Firmino - 4.6
    8.0 - Defoe - 4.5
    8.0 - Benteke - 3.8
    7.5 - King - 4.7
    7.5 - Rooney - 4.1
    7.0 - Gabbiadini - 3.7

Even as a Forward, King looks like good value, comfortably outscoring the likes of Benteke and Gabbiadini even as a Forward, in part due to performing much better in the BPS. He also compares favourably to the likes of Firmino and Vardy, considering the 1.0 price gap between them. He's not currently in my team, but I think he certainly warrants consideration.

Very good differential. Thing is, Firmino 'only' costs 1.0M more, and I feel like that's the mindset most people will have - that Firmino is only 1.0M more, not that King is 1.0M less.

He's also 0.5M more than Gabbiadini and 1M more than Austin, both of whom could prove to be awesome picks for Saints' run of fixtures over the coming weeks.

Definitely one for the watchlist, probably better to assess things and then pick him up later on if needs be.

Putting Firmino to one side, to justify the extra 0.5 for King over Gabbiadini (Austin doesn't look in line to start GW1), it's worth noting Bournemouth were easily the best attack on the South Coast last season.

Bournemouth scored 55 goals, with only six of the top seven managing more - Man United got 54. They also had 65 Big Chances - only the top six had more.

Southampton only scored 41, more than just Watford, Burnley and the three relegated teams. They had 49 Big Chances - with those five teams and West Brom the only sides with less. They haven't strengthened their attack over the summer, and I'm not sure they'll be scoring many more this season, given Pellegrino's record at Alaves.

I had King in my first draft, but he's out and I've opted for Benteke. I believe Fraser is exceptional value for 5,5. I don't dare go with two Bournemouth players from the off. I don't think that there are as much value I can 5,5 midfield bracket as in the 7/8 forward bracket. For the reasons you mention I'm staying clear of the saints attack and midfield for now. I'll be keeping a keen eye on King as well as the saints.

Yes I have been wondering why I don't see him in any RMTs. We seem to have short memories as he was on fire last season.

Firmino also worries me in that he had some barren spells up top and his best position for points seemed to be out wide. I am suspicious of this penalty swap as why would Klopp change from Milner given his record?

Firmino and King PPS are misleading due to reclassification as Forwards. That's 1 point per goal that must be removed.
That said, the 3rd striker role seems to be filled with decent value for my liking. King delivered for me last season but I'm still going Gabbiadini due to fixtures.

This! I simply don't understand why you'd ever pick Willian over Alonso.

      Same price.
      Alonso more nailed in general.
Both play in (more or less) the same position.
Alonso gets 3 points more for a CS.
Alonso gets 1 point more for a goal.
Alonso takes just as many free kicks as Willian.
Alonso gives you a flexible price point in defence.
Willian likely usurped once Hazard returns.

You won't have Willian for a whole season so pointless looking at overall score, and Willian is their go to player now hazard is gone. It will be hard to pick which games Alonso will score in , if williams fails in 2/3 gws then get rid, simple as

It's just a punt, if he doesn't perform then get rid to someone in form, it's quite simple tbh...Alonso doesn't allow that flexibilty

What? If Alonso isn't performing you can swap to Walker/Mendy/Valencia... any 6.0. How doesn't he give that flexibility?

I'd argue that Alonso offers far MORE flexibility than Willian. If Alonso isn't performing I can swap him for ANY defender that I like. If Willian isn't performing I can only swap him for those midfielders who are 7.0 or below.

The chances of the midfielder in form under 7mil scoring more points is higher than if you change to a 6mil defender, as there are more goals/assists to be gained from mids

Exactly, with Alonso you have to play him the whole season to get his points, but with Willian you are not tied down, you can jump bandwagon to bandwagon when the fixtures and form is there, so this will result you to get more points overall in the season than if you had Alonso for the whole season.

This argument still assumes Willian will outscore Alonso whilst he is nailed. The other argument here assumes you can't jump from Alonso to Walker to Milner to Valencia to Kolasinac and back to Alonso.

I never understand these type of comments. Ultimately, you should compare players prices from the same position. Mids will always be more expensive than defender. All you can do with comparing prices across positions is to decide on the best formation to use.

Different positions is a factor. Can have both, or not, or one or the other. I'd consider the analysis more around budgets for each position, and price points.

Willian scored at a faster rate per minute. Had they played the same minute,Willian scores over 200.

Josh Harrop scored at a faster rate than Willian. If anything this is an argument against Willian since he doesn't get enough pitch time.

He's getting pitch time in GW1. It's a bit like Walcott in the old days. Harrop played 1 game so it's hardly fair.

Unbelievable lack of insight into the GW1 decision-making process. I expected more from you.

Alonso vs Willian is a non-issue. Whether to pick the former should be about potential returns over a run of fixtures until 1st wildcard; if you intend to keep the expensive defender or switch to another that's a decision for that moment.

The Willian question is one of short term plans and relies on week to week assessments after a crackibg

Flexibility of various price points is countered by rolling over transfers and making double moves every two weeks.

Too many are hung up with flexibility and in doing so pick inferior players to fit various price points.

        True.
There are a number of good value defenders for less than 7.0m, but a lack of good value midfielders below 7.0m.
Willian plus a cheaper defender is better value than Alonso plus a cheaper midfielder.

I'm deciding on the two myself, Willian in a 343, Alonso in a 433.

It's not that clear cut. 343 with Willian gives a better team structure as there are more alternatives when you sell Willian (looking at West Ham mids when Hazard is back). Alonso is undoubtedly a better pick long term and saves a transfer down the line but Willian may easily outscore him short term.

In basic terms it looks obvious but TM has stolen my thunder above.
If you have 12.5million then it's easier to find real value at 5.5m in defence and have Willian at 7m with relatively good alternatives to swap to. Not so easy the other way round without taking a hit.
It's always been the case with expensive defenders and I can only think of 2 who were worth it from GW1 - Baines & Ivan.
Alonso was brilliant last season but I'm not throughing 7m at him in GW1, no way.
Wouldn't touch Willian either to be fair. 😉

At the end of the day Granville, many think they can use that 7m to make more points and more money than Alonso's 180. Trading, transfers... further up, where it moves.

Alonso played more and Chelsea kept a lot of clean sheets, which they won't do again. Their squad is threadbare and selling Matic to United was insanity.

You're missing the point though. The reason I have Willian over Alonso is that he is miles better than every midfielder beneath him in the price scale.

It's not as simple as Alonso or Willian. If it was a straight swap I would have the former.

It's Alonso or say Ince/Ritchie/Fraser vs a 5.5/6m defender (of which there are loads of good options) and Willian

How is this dumb post a hot topic?

Alonso played 2693 minutes. Willian played 1534. It's idiotic to compare their overall scores from last season.

There are great defensive options for 5 to 5.5. The same priced midfielders are faeces.

Because psychologically, in basic terms, Alonso and Gross doesn't seem to be that much better than Bertrand and Willian. It's all about sacrifices and balance, not a match-up between two players, especially when it comes comparing different positions.

        Ignoring both.

Bertrand will outscore Alonso first 8 fixtures or until Southampton's great run takes a turn.

        Zaha will outscore Willian.

because willian has a better points per minutes so when nailed will score more than alonso, plus chelseas fixtures arent ideal for CS's where a good portion of alonso's points come from.

Think their attack will struggle to start, especially now that all 3 of their "attackers" from last year are out (Pedro, Hazard, Costa). Would rather roll with Alonso at this point for the extra bonus of CS

I would say Rosenior will be the most likely to get minutes but realistically that's going to be sub appearances at 1 or 2 points every few weeks so you're better off going for a 4.5 and try your luck at random 6pts

Highly likely I'll switch to him on the WC around GW6. Fixtures improve near then, new players will be better settled and Hazard back

Still allows Kane, Lukaku, KdB, Salah and Willian/Fabregas (currently torn between the two!) up top.

I'd spent a lot in defence (had Alonso, Trippier, etc.) until about a week ago since when I've stripped the cupboard bare to upgrade elsewhere. It's what I'd have done in GW3 anyway so I thought I'd get it out of the way in preseason 😆

I just don't know how you can get all three without radically affecting your possibility of getting good points from the mids or defs. I just think you need a couple (or a few) premium mids to power your squad and a reasonable defense, and having that much firepower up at the top will through off the balance. But what do I know?

Jac the Cat: How? I've tried any number of iterations and can't seem to find a way to do it. At best, you're just guessing (and hoping) that some value priced mids or defs actually produce...which is, again, just guessing and hoping. That said, I'd love to see how someone is able to pull it off.

      Do I go with the safe option A, or the risky-more-fun option B;

      A) Kompany, Bertrand, Ake
      B) Kolasniac, Danilo, Cedric

      Almost game time.

      Foster / Elliot
Alonso Ake Yoshida / Sutton Hummer
Salah KDB Willian Fraser / Carroll
      Lukaku Kane Mounie

Mounie is my weak link, but I need a certain starter first of all before I move in for a more valuable 3rd.

Call him an enabler then. I was on Austin battling to find another 0.5 beforehand. This Mounie route helped me get Yoshida back in after actually making 0.5 instead!

Just for the record being as it was mentioned on the last thread...re...you can't bench expensive defenders...

Last year I was lucky enough, along with one or two others on here, to get Yoshida as soon as VVD was injured and rotated him with Baines....that was a 4.0 and 5.5 rotation...

That rotation from something like GW22 or whatever it was yielded more pts per GW than Alonso averaged for the season...

Of course you can bench expensive defenders.

Worried about the fact that you've only got Eriksen as a premium mid. Willian is fine for now, maybe, but will get rotated throughout the season, and the rest of your midfield is pretty weak.

          8 years, 4 months ago

Trying to squeeze in the front 3 - defence too weak even with rotation?

          Foster
          Stephens, Francis, Lowe
          KDB, Salah, Boufal/Ritchie, Atsu
          Kane, Lukaku, Jesus

As far as i'm concerned it was just a team thing and letting him "have a pen" in a pre season match. When he takes one in the prem then "he's on pens" and not before.
