In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to its most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet (for defenders).

As the award is dished out by a match reporter and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last four season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future awards.

Top Overall Recipients

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts-MoTM %
Eden Hazard36925%
Philippe Coutinho28932%
Alexis Sanchez36925%
Wilfried Zaha34721%
Harry Kane29724%
Kevin De Bruyne33515%
Raheem Sterling29517%
Ross Barkley32516%
Marc Albrighton29517%
Diego Costa35514%
Sergio Aguero25520%
Zlatan Ibrahimovic27519%

Here are a few points to note:

Seven midfielders and five forwards make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.

Eden Hazard has now topped the MoTM charts in three out of the last four seasons.

Philippe Coutinho has the highest starts to MoTM ratio and so possibly would have topped the total MoTM awards last year if not for injury.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list is generally made up of expensive players from the top sides.

Flair appears to be a theme. Aside maybe from Marc Albrighton, the remaining players are known for their showmanship.

Position % of total MoTM awards by season

13/1414/1515/1616/17Total
Goalkeeper6%8%6%6%6.4%
Defender15%13%13%18%14.7%
Midfielder52%52%58%52%53.8%
Forward27%27%23%24%25.1%

Over the last four seasons the consistency here is almost frightening – midfielders dominate while forwards also claim a healthy piece of the pie.

Considering that most teams only field one forward, it does make their tally all the more appealing, however.

Defenders made a slight jump in 16/17, possibly due to the success of wingbacks. If this trend continues expect a slight increase in this area once again.

This Season’s Benefactors

So let’s try to predict a few of the players likely to gain from awards for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team.

Fantasy Football Scout League

We have already set up our Fantasy Football Scout League and, after winning the League of Leagues for each of the last four seasons, we’re looking to defend our crown in 2017/18.

"You can set up a watchlist of players that you want to keep an eye on."

If I time out or simply don't attend the draft - will the system pick from my watchlist?

Would change anything in this back 3?

    Ake - Strephens - Bertrand

Ake/Daniels & Stephens are the top picks from the 5.0m lot imo.

Seen a a lot of people considering PVA, Stones, Darmian & Monreal in the 5.5 bracket but personally I can't see any of these who have better fixtures or more attacking threat than Bertrand.

Trippier would have been my 5.5 pick but now that he's injured I think Bertrand is the best place holder in the 5.5 category.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

    Quick poll choose
    A) Top teams get a higher rate of clean sheets at the start of the season

    B) Top teams get clean sheets at the same rate throughout the year

    C) Top teams get lower rate of clean sheets at the start of the season.

(Where start of the season = 10 games)

I've counted and analysed the clean sheets for the last 4 seasons, 912 games. So I already know the answer. Just looking for general consensus opinion.

Which defensive pairing? Own Kola, Bertrand and Mee.

    A) Suttner + Lowe
    B) Dann/Daniels + 4.0

    repost, again.

    Which one to go with:
    A) Alonso, JRod + 0.5 itb
    B) Alonso, Gabbi + 0 itb (Other 0.5 from a deadspot defender)
    C) Kompany, Gabi + 0.5 itb

I am currently on A and due to flexibility i really need that 0.5m in the bank. I want to go for Gabbi over JRod but I don't want to go without Alonso either. So which sacrifice should be made?
