In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to its most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet (for defenders).

As the award is dished out by a match reporter and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last four season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future awards.

Top Overall Recipients

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts-MoTM %
Eden Hazard36925%
Philippe Coutinho28932%
Alexis Sanchez36925%
Wilfried Zaha34721%
Harry Kane29724%
Kevin De Bruyne33515%
Raheem Sterling29517%
Ross Barkley32516%
Marc Albrighton29517%
Diego Costa35514%
Sergio Aguero25520%
Zlatan Ibrahimovic27519%

Here are a few points to note:

Seven midfielders and five forwards make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.

Eden Hazard has now topped the MoTM charts in three out of the last four seasons.

Philippe Coutinho has the highest starts to MoTM ratio and so possibly would have topped the total MoTM awards last year if not for injury.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list is generally made up of expensive players from the top sides.

Flair appears to be a theme. Aside maybe from Marc Albrighton, the remaining players are known for their showmanship.

Position % of total MoTM awards by season

13/1414/1515/1616/17Total
Goalkeeper6%8%6%6%6.4%
Defender15%13%13%18%14.7%
Midfielder52%52%58%52%53.8%
Forward27%27%23%24%25.1%

Over the last four seasons the consistency here is almost frightening – midfielders dominate while forwards also claim a healthy piece of the pie.

Considering that most teams only field one forward, it does make their tally all the more appealing, however.

Defenders made a slight jump in 16/17, possibly due to the success of wingbacks. If this trend continues expect a slight increase in this area once again.

This Season’s Benefactors

So let’s try to predict a few of the players likely to gain from awards for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team.

Hey Guys, My first RMT comment .. Appreciate your thoughts 🙂

    Forster | Elliot
Alonso | Bertrand | Holding | Alex. Arnold | Mee
De Bruyne | Salah | Zaha | Ritchie | Carroll
    Lukaku | Lacazette | J. Rod

    Currently with 0.0 itb

I was thinking I might downgrade De Bruyne to D. Silva so that I'd have 2 mil itb which could come in handy in the next weeks.
I'm also thinking of playing 1st GW with 4-3-3 by playing Alex Arnold and benching Ritchie.

West Brom + Burnley defensive rotation is absolutely stellar til GW13 and still pretty great till GW17. Two proven FPL teams without much attacking quality who will be battling for every point at home.

    BOU / WBA / STO / WHM / HUD / WAT / WHM / sou / NEW / hud / SWA / [ARS] / NEW / CRY / WAT / STO / bha /

3 away games and just Arsenal from top 7/8 teams.

4.5 Hegazi + 4.5 Mee / Ward look to be great rotated with double Southampton over the first 5 weeks.

Thought I'd share that. Probably late to the party on this one.

Hegzagi will probably be out of the team once McCauley is back match fit. Despite this I'm still going with it. He could survive a little while without being rotated himself.

Fill in the striker slots first, atleast the first 2 picks should be strikers.
A premium mideo should come after that
Dont worry about defenders till atleast 7 rounds, ther are plenty of big names to choose from, even in a 10 man draft
Dont fret much if you lose out on a single big name like Kane or Lukaku, they cannot have much ling term imoact because no captaincy....so o double points!

Best luck, how many players playing?

I am on it currently. I am starting to think so.

If Elliot starts (likely), his price could rise significantly, being the only playing 4.0 keeper.

If newcastle sign a new keeper in a couple weeks then you may only need 0.3-0.4 to upgrade which isn't too much to ask

if your willing to blow a ft or plan to wc early (like gw3) then no. otherwise yes,
4.0 keepers tend to get 40ish points less than 5.5ers whjilst you can find a 4.5 who only gets 10ish less each year.

    Morning everyone.
This is where I'm at, worried about no United cover with their fixtures, so if anything obvious pops up, please holla.
    I won't be removing Kane

    Elliot Forster
    Bavies Monreal Bertrand mee Hegazi
    Alli zaha salah Ritchie TC
    Kane Jesus Mounie

    Any help?

great squad but I wouldn't want all those decisions to make every week on who to play.

Scared of lukaku at all ??

Can someone point out to the site developers that parts of the members area is woefully out of date. I mean whats the point of looking at teams who arent even in the prem anymore...some have moved clubs twice since it was last updated.

Was just watching some Zaha highlights from pre-season for I absolutely have no faith in him delivering anything more than 2 points per game, but this Nyom vs Zaha battle is quite funny. Nyom just tries to take him out every chance he gets.

How important is balance and why?

Because I'm struggling to decide whether to go with KdB and Mounie, or Jesus to play alongside Lukaku and Kane, which would mean going with a cheap 5.5 midfielder.

Same here. I think I'll even go with the big front three + KDB and Salah.
My thinking behind is that if one of the three striker doesn't do well, it's easy to downgrade him in GW3, if you saved a ft, and spread the money. If the 3 are on fire they will get you 30-40 pts with captaincy just between them and you will not miss on points.

So I don't really see any negative points.

The problem is flexibility, especially in reacting to the inevitable bandwagons that will emerge, and the catching price rises. With 5 big hitters the other attacking slots will be in the £4.5/5.0M range, which makes it impossible to pick up the fast starter in the £6.0/8.0M range with a single transfer.
