In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to its most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet (for defenders).

As the award is dished out by a match reporter and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last four season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future awards.

Top Overall Recipients

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts-MoTM %
Eden Hazard36925%
Philippe Coutinho28932%
Alexis Sanchez36925%
Wilfried Zaha34721%
Harry Kane29724%
Kevin De Bruyne33515%
Raheem Sterling29517%
Ross Barkley32516%
Marc Albrighton29517%
Diego Costa35514%
Sergio Aguero25520%
Zlatan Ibrahimovic27519%

Here are a few points to note:

Seven midfielders and five forwards make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.

Eden Hazard has now topped the MoTM charts in three out of the last four seasons.

Philippe Coutinho has the highest starts to MoTM ratio and so possibly would have topped the total MoTM awards last year if not for injury.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list is generally made up of expensive players from the top sides.

Flair appears to be a theme. Aside maybe from Marc Albrighton, the remaining players are known for their showmanship.

Position % of total MoTM awards by season

13/1414/1515/1616/17Total
Goalkeeper6%8%6%6%6.4%
Defender15%13%13%18%14.7%
Midfielder52%52%58%52%53.8%
Forward27%27%23%24%25.1%

Over the last four seasons the consistency here is almost frightening – midfielders dominate while forwards also claim a healthy piece of the pie.

Considering that most teams only field one forward, it does make their tally all the more appealing, however.

Defenders made a slight jump in 16/17, possibly due to the success of wingbacks. If this trend continues expect a slight increase in this area once again.

This Season’s Benefactors

So let’s try to predict a few of the players likely to gain from awards for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team.

    1. DDG and Hegazi (or other 4.5)
    2. Foster and Danilo (or other 5.5)

Other defenders are Cedric, Daniels, Mee, and Suttner. Please pick 1 or 2 and evaluate. Thanks 🙂

Is the 3th striker essential? I see that so many menagers have firmino as 3th striker, which is cool of course. But if you sacrifice that slot for someone like 5 mil, you can make monster 2 or 3 upgrade in def and mid and play 4-4-2.
My point is that, 2 or 3 bigger hitters in def and mid can outclass one good 3th striker

That 3rd striker spot was the bain of my season last year, yet once again I find myself still going for one of those £7/8 million options again. I really should do like you say, get in a cheaper bench fodder 3rd striker and beef up elsewhere. However, I think Hernandez could be a steal at 7m.

    Foster (Elliot)

Atsu - Willian - Salah - Zaha (Carrol)

Guys, with all the RMT posts on here I have to ask...do you rate the 'Rate My Team' tool in the members section??

This will be my first season as a member...looking forward to seeing if it can help/improve my overall rank.

Using that facility, It seems that if your team is scoring in (or close to) the 340's, then you're on the right track.

Is Tammy Abraham fit and nailed for Swansea? Looking for someone to downgrade Firminho to to get Mane in Mid

I think he is fit, but not nailed. When Llorente is healthy, I'm not sure if Abraham will still play. I am going with a non-playing 3rd forward so I can get Mane.
