In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to its most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet (for defenders).

As the award is dished out by a match reporter and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last four season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future awards.

Top Overall Recipients

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts-MoTM %
Eden Hazard36925%
Philippe Coutinho28932%
Alexis Sanchez36925%
Wilfried Zaha34721%
Harry Kane29724%
Kevin De Bruyne33515%
Raheem Sterling29517%
Ross Barkley32516%
Marc Albrighton29517%
Diego Costa35514%
Sergio Aguero25520%
Zlatan Ibrahimovic27519%

Here are a few points to note:

Seven midfielders and five forwards make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.

Eden Hazard has now topped the MoTM charts in three out of the last four seasons.

Philippe Coutinho has the highest starts to MoTM ratio and so possibly would have topped the total MoTM awards last year if not for injury.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list is generally made up of expensive players from the top sides.

Flair appears to be a theme. Aside maybe from Marc Albrighton, the remaining players are known for their showmanship.

Position % of total MoTM awards by season

13/1414/1515/1616/17Total
Goalkeeper6%8%6%6%6.4%
Defender15%13%13%18%14.7%
Midfielder52%52%58%52%53.8%
Forward27%27%23%24%25.1%

Over the last four seasons the consistency here is almost frightening – midfielders dominate while forwards also claim a healthy piece of the pie.

Considering that most teams only field one forward, it does make their tally all the more appealing, however.

Defenders made a slight jump in 16/17, possibly due to the success of wingbacks. If this trend continues expect a slight increase in this area once again.

This Season’s Benefactors

So let’s try to predict a few of the players likely to gain from awards for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team.

How's my midfield? I have the big three upfront btw.

    Salah - Mkihitaryan - Groß - Milivojevic - (Carroll)

Personally I prefer a stronger midfield, the top scorers there are on a par with the strikers and cost less overall

For the 5th defender I guess most of us will chose a 4.0m player.

Right now Rangel have a 21.6% ownership. He has played around one half of every pre season match with Noughton playing the other half. I would guess Naughton is first choice. Another option is Long in Burnley who actually have started a few games in pre season but it looks as if he is first sub for the two regular central defenders. The ownership is however a lot lower for him at 3.0%

From a price perspective, who is most likely to fall in price if both don't play and who is most likely to increase in price if both play?

    1. Teror
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 4 months ago

Rangel definitely. Go with a 4.0 with low ownership so you won't lose value.

      1. Limbo
        • 15 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

TBH I think the ONLY reason Rangel has high ownership, is people sorting transfer tables for 4.0 player, and he's top of the list.

Won't play unless there's an injury IMO

Or, just don't bother at the start and then see once a £4 0 becomes a bona fide starter.

None of the 4.0's look tempting and the real threat of either having to take him out straightaway or suddenly lose £0.1 on him once its clear he isn't starting straight away further lessens the appeal for me.

Rangel will drop but I don't think it'll be as quick as people think unless there is a 4.0m defender who emerges. Still better to avoid.

Is Kane really essential?i mean he cost £3m more than Alli.and Alli scored more points than Kane last season.Kane scored 27 goals last season, thats huge number, and do we really believe that he is going to score even more this year?because i believe Alli can score same numbers this season as he did last season(18+11).so is Kane worth that extra £3m???
I do currently have Kane but thinking to switch him to Alli...

Kane is a much better captain option. And he is also much harder to get if he hits the ground running.

    Too much in defence?

    Foster (Elliot)
    Kolasinac - Kompany - Valencia (4.0, 4.0)
Atsu - Willian - Salah - Zaha (Carrol)
Lukaku - Lacazette - Gabriel Jesus

I know its basically a 12 man squad but it could work for the first 2 gameweeks where I can reassess with hopefully 2 free transfers for gameweek 3.

1 big hitter in defence is enough IMO. 1 Southampton + rotating 4.5m 3rd/4th defenders IMO

Willian + ATSU + Zaha seems lightweight

Lacazette could be horrible to own, especially if Kane gets off the mark.
