After failing to adequately replace Romelu Lukaku last summer, Everton wasted little time in bringing in a forward in the January transfer window, signing Cenk Tosun from Turkish side Besiktas for a reported fee of around £25 million.

On sealing the deal, manager Sam Allardyce was very clear that he feels the club have pulled off a major coup.

“He is Turkey’s number one striker and has scored goals in the Champions League and the Turkish League. I don’t think you can look any more than we have done and, for the price, this is the best in Europe at the moment.”

The History

Born in Germany, Tosun linked up with Eintracht Frankfurt in 1997 at the age of six and progressed to make his professional debut in May 2010.

But the frontman failed to make the grade in Germany as a youngster and joined Turkish outfit Gaziantepspor in January 2011.

He made an immediate impact, registering 10 goals and six assists in 14 league appearances.

Tosun stayed with Gaziantepspor until February 2014, finishing with 44 goals and 23 assists from 144 matches in all competitions.

The striker then joined Besiktas on a five-year deal worth nearly €500,000. He initially found it difficult to break into the starting XI, with big-name forwards Demba Ba and Mario Gomez ahead of him in the pecking order.

But Tosun became a regular at the start of the 2016/17 campaign and has produced 28 goals and five assists in 49 league appearances over the last 18 months.

The 26-year-old has also gained valuable UEFA Champions League experience, producing four goals and two assists in six matches this season as Besiktas secured a place in the last 16.

Tosun represented Germany at youth level before pledging his allegiance to Turkey.

He made his senior debut against Holland in October 2013 and has made 25 appearances for his country, totalling eight goals and three assists.

The Prospects

The 26-year-old boasts several attributes that should enable him to make an impact in the Premier League.

Standing six feet tall, Tosun offers a sound aerial threat and has the strength to hold off defenders, bringing team-mates into play. Indeed, Tosun highlighted this quality in his first interview with the club.

“The Premier League is a strong league, I know that, so my own physical strength will help me. Also I can use both feet the same and I believe I am a good striker in the box.”

But Tosun’s ability to take on defenders highlights that he is far from the stereotypical target man normally associated with Allardyce’s teams.

Indeed, the Everton boss was quick to highlight the new signing’s versatility.

“He is an all-rounder, with good movement. He is two-footed, not the biggest but efficient in the air and in the box – he gets good space to get his head on the ball. “

The striker’s mobility allows him to elude his markers and he’ll often drop deep or drift to wide areas to create space for team-mates; that could benefit Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The underlying statistics offer further indication that he provides a major upgrade in attack for the Toffees.

This season, the Tosun has fired 63% of his shots from inside the penalty area, with an effort every 22.6 minutes in league action and every 29.9 in Europe.

Oumar Niasse leads the way for Everton so far in the campaign, averaging a goal attempt every 28.6 minutes, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin (41.2) is even less impressive in that regard.

Between the pair, they have managed just eight league goals.

But one concern regarding Tosun’s prospects is whether he can wrestle penalty duties from Rooney.

Nine of his 28 league goals over the last 18 months have come from the spot, so losing penalties would have an impact on his output.

However, it’s worth noting he has an exceptional record when it comes to penalties and has scored 24 of 25 attempts over the course of his career.

If he usurps Rooney in the pecking order, that would in turn dent the veteran’s future tallies. Despite being stationed in a withdrawn role, Rooney has still managed 5.2 points per match, level with Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, for example.

Bearing in mind that Allardyce favours a lone striker set-up, Tosun’s arrival will surely limit Calvert-Lewin’s pitch-time.

Having started nine of the last 10 Gameweeks, the 20-year-old has risen in price from 5.0 to 5.5 in recent weeks and boasts a 12% ownership in FPL. However, he now looks far more likely to earn minutes off the bench from here on.

Given that Rooney started the season valued at 7.5 and classified as a forward, Tosun looks set to come in at that price point.

Rooney aside, managers have been starved of compelling options in that bracket and should Tosun show early form, we can expect immediate interest, with Firmino and Alvaro Morata owners considering the swap.

Although Everton are without a win in their last four, the upturn in form since Allardyce’s appointment at Goodison Park suggests that Tosun could deliver.

A trip to Wembley is up next for the Toffees and that match-up should provide Fantasy managers with an early insight as to what we can expect.

The schedule after that (WBA LEI ars CRY wat bur BHA stk) is kind all the way up to Gameweek 31, increasing the chances of Tosun becoming a viable mid-price option.

But Everton’s goal threat since Allardyce took charge is worrying.

Over his eight Gameweeks as manager, the Toffees sit in the bottom two for shots (58), efforts in the box (39), attempts on target (21) and big chances (eight).

Everton’s ability to create chances will surely need to improve if Tosun is to be given the opportunities to impress and figure in our 2018 plans.

Why do you think Salah should go down? Didn’t he just show sellers that were FH and people selling for one week only then bringing back (not that that makes any sense to me given cash tied up for most).

I notice FF Fix still has him massively red but that site isn’t as sophisticated as FPLstats which doesn’t have Salah going down.

Salah has gone from around 58% ownership to 50% ownership. With over 5 million people playing the game, that's something like 300,00 people who have sold him and still we haven't even had a lousy, stinking 0.1m price drop. How are earth are you meant to play FPL as a game when the system is rigged and it is not a level playing field for everyone? It's simply not fair that FPL are manually tweaking the price change algorithm just because lots and lots of people are highly invested in 1 player. We saw something similar happen with Lukaku earlier in the season were there was clearly human intervention in the price changes. Even sites like FPL statistics say there is something going on.

there are other parameters around DGW's that are not factored in to the algorithm that sites like FPL statistics use.

Lots of people sold him in good faith expecting at least a 0.3 price drop. Something fishy is going on for him to not even drop once. I mean, we're talking about literally hundreds of thousands of sales since the news broke.

I dunno about 0.3 but I certainly expected a couple of drops. Still I don't think we will see him this week and even if he does he will probably get little against the Man City defence. We will just need to be content with gaining points on all those people who are still siting on him

Nothing wrong. He should have dropped though. Either way he is unlikely to get big point against city if he is fit so I am sure it will be fine.

Hopefully the injury will drag on and on and becise people haven't panick sold because they aren't losing value their ranks will haemorarge until they face expulsion from the league.

They have seemingly tweaked the algorithm this season, as shown with Lukaku + Micky earlier on in this season. Whether it is a change to the threshold or them simply change prices as they please I think they need to be more transparent of the price changes

Have you even accounted for the amount of wildcarders? Salah should've had a drop of 2.6% of his owners from wildcarders alone. He was also yellow flagged, which increases the threshold for price drops.

My simple information tells me that there shouldn't have been a drop.

Salah rose to 10.1 at 3.279 million owners. To fall in price he would have to lose about 10% of that ownership, so around 328 k owners. That leaves him to fall at 2.95 million owners. Before last GW Salah had an ownership of 59%. Assuming that 59% of the 246 000 wildcarders owned Salah, that leaves nearly 147k that could've sold Salah, which moves the target of ownership required for a fall down to nearly 2.8 millions.

Right now Salah has an ownership of 50% in a game with more than 5.65 million players. Ergo my simple price calculation says he's on the edge of falling.

Now I make assumptions that might not be right, but these assumptions tells me that you have no reason to claim the system is fixed.

Falls aren't 10% ownership when above original price fwiw.

Doesn’t need 10% fall in ownership to drop in price, so your guess is not on any correct basis imv

It's been pretty obvious for a few seasons now that FPL have been trying to reduce the money making strategy part of the game. That's why they now limit price rises/falls to a maximum of 0.3 per GW, so you can effectively only gain 0.1 profit. In the old days the early WCs were deployed over the international breaks to maximise money making by buying and selling a bunch of price risers before locking in your actual team. Now the 0.3 limi,t and the fact that WC transfers don't seem to be included in the price factoring has stopped that strategy. I'm sure FPL with the manual tweaking of certain highly owned players are doing it for similar reasons (to stop people selling and buying back at the same price, or even less)?

I agree that he should of dropped 0.2 and it's annoying now that he is likely to not fall. My question is if you knew he wouldn't of dropped at all would you still have made the move?

Does anyone know why Salah hasn't dropped? Is it due to him being hurt? Does the transfer out not matter? Alonzo goes up with only a few thousand transfers in... doesn't make sense

Alonso has had 75k transfers in (90k in,15k out) from just 20% ownership base ,,, more transfers in and lower ownership than Salah

Reasons for Salah not dropping ... (data from FPL)

            Last GW 22
            - 247k Wild Cards
            - 110k sales (? Seems low)
            - Flagged

            This GW23
            - Probably even more Wild Cards
            - 50k sales (110k out -60k in)
            - two week duration gameweek needs double/more transfers for drop
            - Flagged

I personally think it's great if they manually change the system for certain players.

            Salah is massively UNDERPRICED.

He was 9.0 at the start as he was an unknown quantity. Next season he will be 11.5 or thereabouts if he finishes the season as he started. People have gambled selling him and may be better off points wise but they shouldn't be rewarded money wise at the same time.

Nah I don't think so since he never was a proper striker, always allowed the wingers to go forward. He should have never been classed as a forward this season anyway

Not really. In that case Salah and Firmino play as 2 interchanging forwards in a 4-2-2-2, it's good for both of their outputs.

Aside from the Watford game, City's points has been very spread out generally. Two of Sane, Sterling, and KDB should suffice, and the latter two are much less prone to rotation once Jesus is back and are in better form overall

If Mahrez really is going to Liverpool, looks like a strange deal. Cout and Mahrez are extremely different players. Both amazing of course.

Would've been looking at Mhkitaryan/Özil type players if it was me.

I'm questioning the move too. Mahrez is clearly a RW and obviously Liverpool already have Salah, so where will he fit in with Firmini and Mane filling the other two spots in the front 3. Can't see Mahrez playing in the middle.

But can't see Klopp changing his tactics...so a bit strange. Maybe he'll give Mané Salah Mahrez all free roles to move wide and create chances at will?

They wanted to raise ticket prices, the fans protested and they quickly changed their minds on that idea. Seems like they do care to me... Being oblivious to the opinions of the fans is 'bad for business'. Yes they are primarily businessmen but they are also here to win trophies, asset stripping would be taking a step back from that, can't see them sanctioned the sale of Salah 6 months after Coutinho went. If they do then it sends a clear message and I can see the fans turning on them.

The ticket pricing is a bit of a different issue, as matchday earnings are quite small compared to other income. It isn't really 'bad for business', look at Ashley and Kroenke, most fans of their clubs hate them, yet still turn up to every game and tune in to watch their teams play. Furthermore people hate companies like Monsanto and Microsoft yes use their products every day. Football supporting is one of the weirdest and strongest 'brand loyal' and inelastic markets.

Admittedly they'd like to have a good public image, but business is business, let alone if Salah is offered the chance to replace Ronaldo at Real.

I'd agree with you, an owner can in theory block out the complaints of fans and asset strip a club but I'd argue if someone's a football club owner, they aren't in it solely to make money 9/10. It's difficult to make money in football with all the costs involved and constant demand of the fans to spend money, I'd think most owners are in it for a small number of reasons 1. they want to have a mine's bigger than yours competition with the other richer owners of world football, thinking the Sheik Mansours of the world. 2. They genuinely want to make that club successful as its good for their brand if they do this 3. They love the club 4. To make money (difficult to do as Mike Ashley has found and terrible for image).

From FSG past comments I'd say they fall into category 2, they believe in making a club self sufficient, so when they sell a player for big money they'd hope to reinvest in a number of high potential young players which should in time leave the club better off. As they've found it is not as easy to do this as is looks on paper and you're living in La la land If you think you'll win trophies while doing this. Yes business if business and some deals are too good to turn down but if you want to win trophies you are going to have to reject very good offers at some point. They'll also I'd hope know that the fans won't be too tolerant of the sale of 2 star players in a year. They won't want the negative image or the backlash from the fans

From the snippets of info I've gotten from those Itk, Coutinho was desperate to go and I think that eventually became clear to all. FSG wanted to keep him and left the decision to Klopp, I doubt they'll sanction a Salah sale so soon after Coutinho's been sold unless he himself pulls a Coutinho and the fans would be more understanding in that case as they'd know.

We're not getting Mahrez but even if we did we'd play 4222 with him on the right, Mane on the left and Firmino and Salah up front, we've played that formation a few times this season.

If Theo goes to Southampton, might be worth a look?

Too expensive personally. His chances will drop dramatically in a worse team.

Could be, but I don’t think 7.1 is too bad. If Austin is in his game, could be a good combo there. Could easily be a bust too tho.

Yeah potentially, would prefer Austin in that situation though.

Definitely. Southampton create more than enough opportunities, just lack someone with quality to finish them. Watch this space

Alli, DCL & Depo to Gross, Firminho & quaner over the next gw or 2 will give me

              DDG (elliot)
              Ota Alonso Jones (Duffy, Ogbonna)
              Salah Sterling Eriksen Richarlison Gross
              Kane Firminho (quaner)

Bench or mid too light? Firm worth it? Or stay 451 and get Mustafi/VVD...

              After GW23, to replace Alli as a budget 5th midfielder and differential;

              A. Albrighton
              B. Townsend

I like A but I fancy Miliojevic as the budget but of the season at 4.6, nailed and on pens.

Lots of accusations of foul play in the FF transfer market, but surely a large percentage of the transfers are WC’s so not applicable to the price rises and falls? Isn’t that right?

A large number of recent transfers could have been rendered ineffective for price change purposes by being made on a wildcard.
