Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic is the central figure in Serbia’s national team.

However, World Cup Fantasy managers should think twice before considering Luka Milivojevic, who is unlikely to reproduce the form that saw him become a key Fantasy Premier League asset in 2017/18.

We’ve got everything you need to know about the final Group E nation here…

ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

As is often the case with former Yugoslavian nations, nobody is sure which Serbia will turn up at this World Cup. Will it be the outfit which won a difficult qualification group containing Republic of Ireland, Wales and Austria, all of whom had varying levels of success at Euro 2016 in Serbia’s absence? Or will it be the side beaten at home by Morocco in March with their captain and best defender Branislav Invanovic benched by rookie coach Mladen Krstajic?

Under the management of Slavoljub Muslin, the Serbians lost just one match in qualification making it to a major international tournament for the first time since 2010. Although even then, most of the goals conceded came from defensive errors. So despite successfully winning a group as rank outsiders, Muslin was sacked from his position in October. Other factors in the decision were reported to be disagreements with the country’s football association over team selection, defensive tactics and the omission of young players, namely Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

However, a change in management has, if anything, made things worse. Serbia could yet prove to be another in a long line of Balkan nations unable to get the best out of a good squad. Since 44-year-old Krstajic took over, the players have struggled to adapt to his new tactics. Muslin booked a place in Russia using a 3-4-3 formation but Krstajic has switched between 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 in friendlies and is still unsure which he will use in Russia. “What formation we will play depends on many factors,” he said in a recent interview. “It’s still early to talk about that.”

It’s just two wins from five under Krstajic so far and with important figures such as Nemanja Matic and Dusan Tadic featuring only as second-half substitutes, Serbia were beaten by Chile on Monday night. Add into the mix that they will be without key centre-back Matija Nastasic through injury at the World Cup and ongoing accusations that most of the squad don’t perform as well for their country as they do for their club and it’s hard to know how much to expect from them in Group E.

UEFA QUALIFYING

Most starts: Branislav Ivanovic, Dusan Tadic (both 10), Aleksandar Mitrovic, Antonio Rukavina (both 9), Aleksandar Kolarov, Filip Kostic, Luka Milivojevic, Vladimir Stojkovic (all 8).

Most goals: Mitrovic (6), Tadic (4), Kolarov, Kostic, Gacinovic (all 2).

Most assists: Tadic (7), Kostic (5).

THE KEY TARGETS

Involved in over half of Serbia’s goal’s during qualifying Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic (£6.4m on Fantasy iTeam | £8.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) is the most important Fantasy asset for anyone looking to cover this nation. He scored four goals himself (two from the penalty spot) and assisted seven more, contributing to 11 of Serbia’s 20 qualification strikes. Tadic was a mainstay during that stage of the competition too, starting every single match in UEFA Group D. Since passage to Russia was booked he has featured from the beginning in three of the five friendlies played, operating predominantly on the right-wing of either a 4-3-3- or 4-2-3-1 and scoring against Morocco in March.

On the opposite flank is Hamburg left-winger Filip Kostic (£5.7m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.0m on McDonald’s FIFA), who was just as important during the qualification phase. Developing a good relationship with Tadic, he slotted two goals of his own assisting another five. He has started just two friendlies under Krstajic but did add another assist in March’s 2-0 win over Nigeria. Priced much cheaper than Tadic on Fantasy iTeam at £5.7m, he is worth considering as a cheaper alternative.

Much more assured of a starting berth when Serbia face Costa Rica in the Group E opener on June 17th is striker Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m on Fantasy iTeam | £7.5m on McDonald’s FIFA). The Newcastle United man has revitalised his career at Fulham this season and top-scored for Serbia in qualifying with six strikes. Since Krstajic took over he has started all but one of the friendlies in a lone centre-forward role adding a further three goals.

THE LONG SHOTS

The subject of much debate under Muslin’s time in charge, midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (£5.7m on Fantasy iTeam | £7.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) has had another fantastic season with Lazio and is now being linked with a move to Manchester United. The 23-year-old scored 12 goals and assisted another three in Serie A this season but struggled to get into national squad during Muslin’s tenure for being unwilling to play in defensive midfield. Now that the former boss has moved on, Milinkovic-Savic has started two friendlies, ironically one of them in defensive midfield. He’s not completely nailed on to start with three caps to his name but if handed the opportunity on the back of a break-out season at club level, he could do well in Russia.

20-year-old striker Luka Jovic (£6.2m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) only has six minutes of senior international football under his belt but has found club form at the perfect time. On loan at Eintracht Frankfurt from Benfica, he scored nine goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, and assisted another as the Bundesliga side went on to win the DFB Pokal final against Bayern Munich. As previously stated, Mitrovic has the centre-forward position nailed on but any injuries or suspensions could see Jovic given a chance. Alternatively, Aleksandar Prijovic (£6.0m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) scored the winning goal in the final qualifier and could come in for Mitrovic.

AREAS TO AVOID

Serbia’s unsettled defence is an area to stay away from. Former Chelsea man Branislav Ivanovic (£5.8m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) was ever-present at centre-back during qualifying but has been in and out of the side since Krstajic took over, having the captaincy stripped from him and handed to Aleksander Kolarov (£6.0m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) too. Kolarov himself has started three of Krstajic’s five matches and five different options have been used at centre-back. Furthermore, Serbia’s back-line is not particularly trustworthy either, averaging at least one goal conceded per game in qualifying. That doesn’t bode well ahead of facing Brazil’s potent attack and the not-so-goal-shy Switzerland and Costa Rica in Group E.

Another player to stay away from is Crystal Palace midfielder Luka Milivojevic (£6.1m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.0m on McDonald’s FIFA). The 27-year-old earned popularity on Fantasy Premier League this season for taking the penalties, free-kicks and corners for his side. Those responsibilities led him to 10 goals and two assists with the Eagles, all at a bargain price. Expecting him to replicate that at the World Cup would be foolish, though. National team set-pieces, including penalties, are taken by Tadic, not Milivojevic.

Would be ideal if the team news section had predicted starting line ups for the World cup.

    Just a thought....

100% agree with that! So much so, in fact, that we will supply predicted starting line-ups off the back of these team previews and the final set of international friendlies that are yet to be contested.

It might not be in the usual Team News section, but we'll have something out well before the tournament kicks off next Thursday.

    FANTASY FROGBALL WORLD CUP

    Hi all,

After the success of Fantasy Frogball at the Euros two years ago, it is back for this World Cup. This is a community tournament that will work through the McDonald’s fantasy game. 3 (potentially rising to 4) FFSers will join together to represent each of the 32 nations at this World Cup for a shot at fantasy glory (making 96 entrants). The game will follow the group stages then knockout format of the real tournament but with our own results, with the winners earning the esteemed prize of pride and a mention in the Community Roundup.

Your total score is made up of your three members Fantasy team Gameweek scores combined and you will go head to head with a different nation every week, following the same format as the WC 2018 tournament. Like the actual tournament, a win will earn your team three points, a draw one and a loss zero, and the two teams with the most points from the group stages will advance to the knockout round.

Please email me – George.simms260@gmail.com - listing your FFS name, McDonalds fantasy team name and the nation you hope to represent and I will reply with the Frogball league code for you to join, so I can follow the scores of each team, and the email addresses of the other members of your team (it is important to note that by entering the tournament you consent to this). Either pre-plan your trio and chosen nation on here first and then email me or email me as an independent candidate with your top 3 choices of a nation to represent, and I will fit you in wherever possible. These are always a lot of fun so I hope we get enough people to allow it to run come the 14th.

Below is the article and spreadsheet from that tournament, which will hopefully explain the format to anyone that hasn’t got it so far – I will make another article before the WC tournament itself. There will initially be 96 spaces, which will rise to 128 if a 32-man waiting list is filled – places are allocated on a definite first come, first served basis, and the numbers need to be exact for it to happen. Please leave any questions in the comments below and I will get back to you ASAP. The tournament spreadsheet is also below, I’ll update this as spaces are filled so people can see which countries are free before they enter.

Hes going to be playing basically a winger against Panama and Tunisia with them playing wingbacks. 3 goals from 12 games for Belgium in 2018. Cant go wrong at 6.5.

Yeah, 65 against Ireland, 30 against France. Should be first choice once he gets match fit.

Cant see the value in Neymar at that price playing in a majorly defensive group. Hes class though. Just not sure he is Salah + 3.5 mil class.

Closely watching Kimmich, this Germany side looks like they hate cleanies. Will probably find his way into my team in place of one of the French though.

Easy group, cheap compared to other forwards. Whats not to like from this bench? A nailed gk at 4.0, a nailed defender at 4.5, winger for one of the dark horses Peru and an impact sub in golden boy Marco that can change the outcome for Spain.

Would love to see yours though. 🙂

I asked on Salah because I thought he wasn't gonna be fit for the first game.

My argument on the others isn't so much against their nailed-ness or cheap price. It's that we can take out non performers and sub in someone who plays on another day. Given this I think Asensio is more of a wasted spot and not enough players from the later days in Gameweek 1

      Muller - Isco - Paulinho - Lanzini - Colindres
      Meunier - Trippier - Kjaer - Varela - Kutepov

      Meunier/Hummels/Miranda/Varela (Hegazy)

      Isco/Müller/Carrasco (T. Hamed, C. Sanchez)

      Neymar/Griezmann/G. Jesus

I struggled for ages with keeping Neymar or downgrading (e.g. to Werner) and swapping Hummels for Kimmich and using the extra 2.0 to upgrade that last starting midfield spot (I'm happy with my subs for now). What are your thoughts?

Pavon won't start will he? Aguero is risky too. One blank and it could be Higuain starting the next game.

I keep going back and forth between Pavon, Lanzini, and Lo Celso. Honestly think Lo Celso is most likely to start, but Pavon has the highest ceiling if he plays, and there’s a good shot.

Please RMT. Did a lot of research before finalizing this team. Plan to use the WC after Round 1.

      Muslera | Uzoho
      Godin | Sidibe | Miranda | Meunier | Hakimi
      Eriksen | JRod | Carrasco | Aldawasari | C.Sanchez (Colombia)
      Lukaku | Griezmann | Lewandowski

      Key Questions:
      1) Need to choose between Lewy / Werner / Cavani / Jesus
      2) Is Danilo a sure shot starter? (Danilo > Miranda)
      3) Isco > Eriksen?

Yes. The same Iceland that knockout England. The same Nigeria that put 4 past Argentina one year ago. The same Croatia that steamrolled their group in Euros with Spain and was barely put out in 117' by the later European champions. Playing the same Argentina that has the likes of Caballero, and Fazio in their first 11 that conceded 6 not 3 months ago in one game.

Something that stands out when looking at the fixtures list

    1. Russia have a matchday all to themselves in Week 1 and 2. Considering you can stick or twist with your captaincy, it makes sense to put a decent Russian in your team with that in mind.
    2. France and Argentina play on the same match day throughout the group stage... so from a captaincy perspective it makes little sense to get say Messi / Aguero AND Griezmann / Mbappe

    1. Critical Observer
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

If you believe Messi/Aguero AND Griezmann/Mbappe will bring you lots of points, it makes all the sense in the world to have both. In the end, you can only have 1 captain but 11 players scoring points each round.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 15 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

I think you missed his point completely. You can change your captain each day on this game. Picking two big hitters that play on the same day means you have lesser opportunity to spread the risk.

            1. Critical Observer
              • 9 Years
              7 years, 6 months ago

Dickhead? Who are you and why are you so worked up?

The point was that if you think players X and Y will score well yet shy away from having both of them in your squad for the reason that they play on the same day, giving you 1 less captaincy option on that day, in a game where you can re-roll the dice on captaincy 6 times per round anyway, then you might want to reconsider. It's been mentioned repeatedly and also proven empirically that in this tournament and with this format, many defenders make excellent captains as well; you are not worse off if 2 of your "big hitters" play the same day, assuming you fancy them to actually score.

At some point, for sure, but this deal is probably fairly small beer for them. While the numbers aren't official, there are plenty of reports that they recently paid $50 million for 10 NFL games and showed them on Prime (I can't find any official word on how much they paid for the Premier League rights, but estimates of around £100 million for 20 games feel in the right range). Their total program budget in 2017 was reported to be $4.5 billion and they are reported to have paid $250 million for rights to The Grand Tour alone. I admit a lot of this is unsourced, but I reckon they see this package (which no-one else wanted) to be a relatively cheap way to test the market demand for PL rights - particularly in the US. The numbers are quite breathtaking when you start targetting a worldwide streaming audience.

the compulsory £20 a month regular (entertainment) Sky package is the main reason I switched from Sky to BT and £25 a month or £10 a week Now TV sports passes when required.

Includes compulsory £20 a month regular (entertainment) Sky package, is isn't required to watch via BT or Now TV (for which £25 a month Sports passes can be purchased).

Same here really. I can't justify the spend and our broadband is so slow we cannot illegally stream anyway.

There is something great about radio commentary in my eyes. Apart from when they decide rugby is more important that is or TalkSport has the match instead. Fortunately, that is fairly rare

Also a terrible metric to use as, the cost of 17/18 was Sky + BT so, in reality the delta is Amazon (* 2 months) minus 1-free trial month per person.

It wasn't possible to watch Sky Sports via the BT Platform this season, you needed to also buy a Now TV box with Sky Sports week/month passes or subscribe to both platforms (£38 a month for Sky + £25.99 for BT).
