Timo Werner furthered his case for inclusion in World Cup Fantasy squads after starring in Germany’s first win of 2018.

Meanwhile, Uruguay’s top players all impressed ahead of Russia’s finals.

We’ve got all the goals and assists from the latest round of international friendlies.

GERMANY 2-1 SAUDI ARABIA

Germany survived a scare to record their first win of 2018 by beating Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Leverkusen, but only just.

In the eighth minute Timo Werner scored his second goal in his fourth friendly start since qualification. He fired high into the net from close range after a square ball from Marco Reus.

Werner was involved in the second as it was his cross which was diverted into the net by defender Omar Hawsawi.

However, Saudi Arabia still asked questions of the German defence on a night when substitute Ilkay Gundogan was booed by his own fans following a controversial meeting he and Mesut Ozil had with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Ozil missed the match with a slight knee problem but is not doubtful for the World Cup.

The Saudis finally made a breakthrough in the 84th minute when Sami Khedira fouled Taissir Al-Jassim in the box, conceding a penalty.

With regular spot-kick taker Nawaf Al Abed missing out on a place in the final squad for Russia, Mohammad Al-Sahlawi took the penalty only to see substitute Marc-Andre ter Stegen make a save.

However, Al-Jassim, who registered three assists in qualifying, scored the rebound, slotting home his third friendly goal of the season.

Saudi Arabia should have had another penalty in the closing stages as Mats Hummels fouled Al-Sahlawi, but nothing was given.

GERMANY XI (4-2-3-1): Neuer (ter Stegen 46’); Hector, Hummels, Boateng (Sule 46’), Kimmich (Ginter 81’); Kroos, Khedira; Draxler, Reus (Gundogan 57’), Muller (Brandt 74’); Werner (Gomez 62’).

SAUDI ARABIA XI (4-1-4-1): Al-Maiouf; Al-Harbi (Al-Burayk 46’), Omar Hawsawi, Osama Hawsawi (Albulayhi 83’), Al-Shahrani; Otaif (Al-Mogahwi 75’); Al-Dawsari (Babhir 87’), Al-Faraj (Alkhaibari 91’), Al-Jassim, Al-Shehri; Al-Muwallad (Al-Sahlawi 62’).

CROATIA 2-1 SENEGAL

Croatia came from behind to record just their second victory since qualification in beating Senegal 2-1.

On Sadio Mane’s return to the starting line-up, Alfred N’Diaye set-up Ismaila Sarr’s opening goal in the 48th minute.

Ivan Perisic levelled things up with a heavily deflected free-kick in the 63rd minute.

Luka Modric was the creator for the winner in the 78th minute as he provided the assist for substitute Andrej Kramaric to net the winner.

Mario Mandzukic was back in the starting line-up for Croatia after missing the last three matches. However, he failed to have an impact on proceedings and was replaced by Nikola Kalinic at half-time.

For Croatia, Mane and Diafra Sakho were preferred up front to Mame Biram Diouf, who appeared as a 74th minute substitute.

CROATIA XI (4-2-3-1): Subasic (L Kalinic 67’); Strinic, Lovren (Jedvaj 46’), Corluka, Vida; Rakitic (Kovacic 65’), Badelj (Kramaric 46’); Perisic, Modric, Rebic (Brozovic 61’); Mandzukic (N Kalinic 46’).

SENEGAL XI (4-4-2): Diallo; Sabaly, Koulibaly (Mbodji 82’), Sane, Gassama; Niang (Balde 63’), Gueye (N’Doye 88’), A N’Diaye (B N’Diaye 75’), Sarr (Diouf 74’); Mane, Sakho (Sow 86’).

POLAND 2-2 CHILE

Robert Lewandowski scored his second goal in as many friendly starts for Poland, his 53rd international strike in total.

However, Adam Nawalka’s side let a 2-0 lead slip as they are now without a clean sheet in four matches.

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Gregor Krychowiak provided the assist for Lewandowski’s opener in the 25th minute.

Piotr Zielinski made it 2-0 in the 34th minute following a cross from Kamil Grosicki, who has now been involved in three goals in as many friendly starts (one goal, two assists).

Diego Valdes headed Angelo Saga’s cross four minutes later to put Chile back into the game before Miiko Albornoz scored a sensational equaliser from outside the box in the second-half.

POLAND XI (4-2-3-1): Szczesny (Fabianski 46’); Rybus (Bereszynski 82’), Pazdan, Bednarek, Piszczeck (Cionek 46’); Linetty (Milik 46’), Krychowiak; Grosicki (Goralski 67’), Zielinski, Blaszczykowski; Lewandowski (Teodorczyk 74’).

SWITZERLAND 2-0 JAPAN

Defender Ricard Rodriguez furthered his Fantasy appeal ahead of the World Cup as he converted another penalty in a 2-0 win over Japan.

The designated spot-kick taker also helped the Swiss to their 11th clean sheet in 14 internationals and ensured they go into Russia’s finals undefeated since October.

Substitute Haris Seferovic sealed the victory in the 82nd minute with fellow replacement Francois Moubandje claiming the assist.

Meanwhile it was another match for Japan where both Shinji Kagawa and Shinji Okasaki were named on the bench.

The former came on for Keisuke Honda in the 77th minute while Leicester’s Okasaki did not make an appearance.

SWITZERLAND XI (4-2-3-1): Burki; Rodriguez (Moubandje 73’), Akanji (Elvedi 46’), Schar, Lichsteiner; Xhaka, Behrami; Embolo (Zuber 64’), Freuler (Dzemaili 64’), Shaqiri (Drmic 83’); Gavranovic (Seferovic 64’).

JAPAN XI (4-2-3-1): Kawashima; Nagatomo, Makino, Yoshida, G Sakai (H Sakai 56’); Oshima (Shibasaki 70’), Hasebe; Usami (Inui 55’), Honda (Kagawa 77’), Haraguchi; Osako (Muto 40’).

IRAN 1-0 LITHUANIA

Substitute Karim Ansarifard scored a late winner for Iran as they played Lithuania behind closed doors.

It was the Asian nation’s first match since the end of May after friendlies against Greece and Kosovo were cancelled.

The result represents their seventh victory in ten friendlies since qualification was secured last year.

However the performance was not what coach Carlos Quieroz will be hoping for when Iran start their World Cup campaign, as Ansarifard spared them from registering an embarrassing draw against lowly opposition.

URUGUAY 3-0 UZBEKISTAN

Luis Suarez registered a goal and an assist as Uruguay rounded off their World Cup preparation with a 3-0 win over Uzbekistan.

The Barcelona forward flicked the ball onto Giorgian De Arrascaeta, making his third start in four matches, in the 32nd minute who fired Uruguay into the lead from just inside the box.

Suarez then netted his nation’s second goal from the penalty spot after Rustamjon Ashurmatov was penalised for a handball.

Substitute Carlos Sanchez added to his seven assists in qualifying by providing one for Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez from a corner.

Matias Vecino and Rodrigo Bentancur started alongside each other in central midfield for the third fixture in a row, throwing further doubt on Sanchez’s starting berth when Uruguay face Egypt on June 15.

Elsewhere, Guillermo Varela ended a run of two consecutive starts as Maxi Pereira was preferred at right-back.

Uruguay have now won three in a row and have lost just once in their last nine matches.

URUGUAY XI (4-4-2): Muslera; Caceres, Godin, Gimenez, M Pereira (Laxalt 59’); De Arrascaeta (C Sanchez 65’), Bentancur, Vecino (Torreira 59’), Nandez (C Rodridguez 46’); Suarez (Stuani 83’), Cavani (Gomez 76’).

Where is the FFS article on block defending?

Which fixtures to target. The best way to deploy this strategy.

I have no choice but to play Telegraph because McDonalds doesn't work on an iPad and no one will help.

Block defending has been THE buzzword of World Cup fantasy football. It's disappointing that FFS have not provided some insight into this..

Also, I'm not sure block defending has been THE buzzword. It was overhyped before the friendlies strutted coming in because people were bored and the novelty of the idea appealed to most FFS users which have find the site after the last world cup/Euro

  3. World Cup - early chip strategy
    AA33
      7 years, 6 months ago

These are some key points according to me

      1) Playing the BB in the group stages. There will be a larger pool of attacking players in the group stages and weaker oppositions won't be there in the knockouts.

      2) Playing the WC in the group stages. Again there will be a larger pool of players to choose from, and in the knockouts we have plenty of free transfers in addition to limited number of players

      3) Playing the maximum captain chip in the group stages. This is simply because we will have much easier opponents in the group stages when compared to the knockouts.

Playing BB in Round 1 and WC after this round is better because

      a) Portugal v Spain will be done in this round. Then in WC we can bring in maximum players from these two teams as Iran and Morocco should be a cakewalk for them.

      b) We can ditch England and Belgium players in WC as they clash in Round 3. Also Panama and Tunisia are easy opponents.

      c) Brazil and Germany have relatively tough opponents i.e. Switzerland and Mexico (when compared to Tunisi, Panama, Morocco and Iran). From Round 2 Brazil and Germany have very easy fixtures.

      Any suggestions appreciated 🙂

The only argument against playing the BB in round one is we don't know 100% if our whole team is nailed or not.

I'm thinking maximum captain will be more useful in later rounds when you have less opportunities to change your captain.

          This.

        2. AA33
            7 years, 6 months ago

But you will have much tougher opponents then. Ronaldo is very much likely to score more points against Morocco than against Uruguay, for example

Yes so then may be your captain will land on a defender who scored and kept a clean sheet, while everyone else will get a Ronaldo blank. In the group stages, provided you have a good captain choice everyday, it shouldn't be too difficult to end up with a high scoring player.

Fair point. I think it will be as effective at any stage

BB in Knockout Round 1. There will be mismatches in opponents (Group Winners vs Runners Up), the chance of extra time (more time = more points potential), plus you can totally refresh your team with a higher budget after the group stages.

WC GW3 for the fixture swing

BB final as you’ll have 15 players no doubt

Max cap semis so I don’t have to worry about moving it, can be trickier to pick a player

food for thought, although i'm not sure about the second half of this post. morocco and iran are two of the most defensively solid underdog sides in the comp, likely to be very hard to break down (morocco didn't concede a single goal in their final qualifying group, whilst iran are a notoriously disciplined bus-parking team who held argentina to 0-0 until injury time in the last WC). consensus is mexico are in a fairly shambolic state with a poor coach, and many feel they'll struggle to qualify ahead of sweden, who have a good team spirit and a habit of beating big names lately. serbia have an outstanding midfield and a lot of dark horse potential, and while they might just about be second favourites for the group, switzerland are pretty dubious offensively, so brazil defensive coverage is worth having from the get-go. costa rica aren't likely to be bad either, it's a reasonably similar side to the revelatory team of 2014.

I'm more inclined to WC on GW3 and bench boost also (can I do that?), because Panamá will face Tunez and have the cheaper nailed on players like Blas Perez and Fidel Escobar. I'm sure they'll be trying to exit the world cup with a win.
It's not impossible to field a 15 playing team on GW1 and those 2 fixtures give us England and Belgium against two of the "worst" teams on the World Cup. You can ditch them on GW 3 for Germany, Spain, and Portugal players.
Maximum captain is best on the semifinals, as you only have one chance two change it, and someone on your team is gonna do something!! But nailing that is very tough!
Only downside I see for the BB on GW3 is that it could be difficult to nail all the playing players...
            Thoughts??

the downside you mention is too much of a downside in my view. there could be an absolute ton of rotation and some freak results depending on which teams still have something to play for (kinda like GW38 of fpl, very unpredictable).

you cite england/belgium as having their worst fixture last, but on the flipside spain and portugal get their toughest game out of the way first, so that's kinda swings and roundabouts for me.

'However, this attacking approach can lead to problems at the back, as the defensive players have some issues with their positional play as well as with knowing when to press and when to retreat.

In midfield Osorio has not yet found an ideal No 6. He wants a player with aerial power and the skills to play the ball out of defence. As Rafael Márquez is edging towards retirement, Osorio has assigned Héctor Herrera to this role. Unfortunately, the Porto player is not always the most positionally sound and that can lead to a huge gap between defence and midfield.'

This is from a Guardian article on Mexico. Given Muller has made a living exploiting space and gaps, does this make him a more attractive option GW1?

Yeah, he plays further forward and has more goals and assists during the qualifiers. Coutinho is arguably more expensive based on reputation alone (and maybe for some set pieces).

I'm struggling with that one too. I would usually go for the cheaper option since it's so close but I know what Muller and Jesus are capable of. I think I'll decide after the Brazil friendly tomorrow. I'm on Muller and Jesus for now.

If I stick with the current plan of WCing between 2 and 3

                El kaujio / Uzohu
                Meunier / Danilo / Varela* / Katupov / Granqvist
                Isco / JRod / Paulinho / Carrasco / C. Sanchez
                Cavani / Lukaku / Werner

RRod has great underlying stats in addition to penalties. I might look at him for GW2 or GW3. The problem is there's a lot of value at the back from better teams as well.

We get only one transfer per round. I would not want to waste it to get RRod. he can easily score against Brazil. Switzerland is 6th in FIFA ranking and really can give Brazil a game. Also, Ramos has Portugal first match. Eventually most of the team will have an unfavorable fixture but we always can use our bench.

Brazil play Switzerland in round 1. Some of these teams (thinking about Iceland too) know how to park a bus and park it properly. Don't expect Brazil and Argentina to necessarily run riot.

Iceland don't know how to park a bus anymore, but that doesn't mean I back Argentina. Switzerland have 10 clean sheets in 13 games - but they've conceded in their two hard games recently (Spain and Portugal) and conceded 2 to Hungary. I don't think Brazil will run riot, but I think they're a very good team who scored twice against a very similar Croatia side last week.

This is my first World cup draft, any advice would be appreciated:

          Cavani - Jesus
          Cueva - Ziyach - Isco - Aldawsari - Mueller
          Godin - Sibide - Dalsgaard
          El Kajoui

Subs: Uzoho - Lukaku - Danilo - Meunier

It is correct to bench players who play later in the round correct?
Any thoughts on the current team?

I was trying to decide whether I should do Kajoui to Muslera and then Godin to Hakim or just stick as it is.
Or maybe downgrade Cueva to Nandez and then spend the 1 mil updrading the defence?

          Final, post tinkering:

          El Kajoui
          Danilo Godin Varela
          Ziyach JRod Mueller Aldawsari
          Jesus Mbappe Lukaku
          Sub: Uzoho, Meunier, Carrasco, Dalsgaard

My honest belief is Varela will start if he recovers from injury, and is incredible value.
And I think an approach of having a strong starting 11 with an equal mix of fodder/strong bench options is key

Caballero and Uzoho are from the same group, so aren't a good pairing.

Which other keeper u reckon that can replace one of the above for the same price?

3 of your defenders (RRod vs BRazil, Arnason vs Iceland and Hegazy vs Uruguay) and both your goalies are likely to concede in the first gameweek. Assuming some of your big hitters blank alongside that, as they always do, you don't have enough bench cover - pick two of James, Isco and Muller and spread the cost throughout your team.

RRod has pen and also seems to be involved in lot of Switzerland's goal. So he stays.

I have Kimmich and Godin. So i need only one of the above three to get me some points.

Can we change formation during the round using subs? Can I sub a defender in for a midfielder until it is within the allowed formations?

Team looks good. Not much wrong with the structure, imo. You've just picked some wrong players.

Nandez to a 4.5 and spread the funds in defence better. Needs more Belgium too and the keepers don't rotate at all since they play on the same day.

          Hey , was wondering ,
Can i take out a FWD for a midfielder in manager substitutions if the FWD has scored low/blanked ?

The formation after the substitution must be a valid one I mean.

He really lacks match fitness and the team itself does not seem like scoring that many.

He's very tempting for me, but I think there are forwards that will score more than him and not enough decent mids to use the budget in midfield for. He has tough first two games but I may well bring him in for the Australia game gw3.
