Last Thursday saw the release of the 2018/19 Fantasy Premier League game and Fantasy managers will no doubt be scanning the price list for potential bargains in the offing.

We began our look at this season’s player prices with an assessment of the value for money offered by various goalkeepers and we continue our analysis with an appraisal of the budget defenders on offer.

The £4.0m Enablers

The fifth defensive spot in FPL squads is, for a fair proportion of Fantasy managers, either written off as unplayable bench fodder or as a stopper to call upon in absolute times of crises. Either way, the position is a routine method of liberating some of the £100m budget to spend elsewhere on premium assets.

Whatever the approach, there are one or two viable £4.0m-rated defensive assets that have presented themselves in the price list for 2018/19.

As we have seen in recent seasons, it is rare for any defender in this bracket to be guaranteed playing time. However, full-back Lee Peltier featured regularly for Cardiff City in the Championship last season and, barring any further transfer activity in the summer, would seem set to play a prominent role in the Bluebirds’ Premier League campaign this time around.

Sean Morrison is the more attractive route into the Cardiff backline – who had the joint-best defensive record in the Championship last season – but his obvious goal threat has seen him priced at £5.0m, which will be too steep for many Fantasy managers to swallow.

Ryan Bennett was a semi-regular feature of the Wolverhampton Wanderers’ back three last season, although it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the free-spending West Midlands club bolstered their backline further between now and the start of the season. Bennett’s place would seem the most likely at risk.

Team-mates Roderick Miranda and Danny Batth would seem even more unlikely to feature in the Wolves first team next year.

Chancel Mbemba was a staple of many FPL benches last season and the Newcastle United defender is once again priced up at £4.0m. His time in the north-east looks likely to come to an end this summer though, with a move to Porto mooted.

Martin Kelly, Jan Bednarek and Craig Cathcart are among the other familiar names in the bargain bin of defensive assets.

The £4.5m Candidates

That extra £0.5m will, more often than not, get Fantasy managers the guarantee of starts from their budget defenders and has the potential to return considerable points hauls for little extra investment.

The likes of Shane Duffy, Jamaal Lascelles, Ahmed Hegazi, Kyle Naughton, James Tarkowski, Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen, Stephen Ward and Christopher Schindler all began last season priced at £4.5m and went on to break the 100-point barrier in FPL.

Duffy and his centre-half partner, Lewis Dunk, are again priced up at £4.5m this season. The Brighton and Hove Albion pair had some of the best Clearance, Block and Interception (CBI) statistics in 2017/18 and were desperately unfortunate not to convert their combined 55 chances into more than the one goal.

Team-mates Bruno, Gaetan Bong and new signing Leon Balogun are also in this price bracket. Albion kept ten clean sheets last season; only the sides who finished in the top seven registered more.

READ MORE: Our guide to the best Brighton assets for 2018/19

Schindler and Zanka, the Huddersfield Town centre-back pairing, are also unchanged at £4.5m. Florent Hadergjonaj, who had one of the best minutes-per-chance-created averages among defenders last season, and Terence Kongolo are among the other Terriers at this price.

Possibly the stand-out candidate at £4.5m is Charlie Daniels, who started last season £0.5m higher. Bournemouth’s leaky defence kept only a joint-worst six clean sheets last season and is no doubt the key reason why Daniels, along with club colleagues Simon Francis, Steve Cook and Adam Smith, is available at a reduced price. Only five defenders had more touches in the final third than Daniels last season, however.

Just one of Bournemouth’s opening ten fixtures is against the “Big Six”, which adds to Daniels’ appeal.

READ MORE: Our guide to the best Bournemouth assets for 2018/19

Burnley’s impressive defensive record last season (39 goals conceded and 12 clean sheets) means that only back-ups Kevin Long, Phil Bardsley and Charlie Taylor are available for under £5.0m this time around.

Jamaal Lascelles’ excellent performances for Newcastle United last season have been “rewarded” with a price hike to £5.0m, although the Magpies’ DeAndre Yedlin, Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune are available for £0.5m cheaper.

Rafael Benitez’s side had the best defensive record outside of the top seven last year.

Though both Newcastle and Brighton have tricky fixtures to start with, their schedules improve from October. A Dunk or Duffy double-up with, say, Lejeune would give a very favourable run of fixtures (WHU, BHA, WLV, WAT, BOU, LEI, WHU, CRY, WLV) from Gameweek 8 onwards.

Like Charlie Daniels, Cedric Soares will surely tempt Fantasy managers after dropping down from the £5.0m mark. The Portuguese full-back, who ended last season playing in an advanced role in Mark Hughes’ 3-4-2-1, recorded three assists in his last seven fixtures for Southampton.

Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt are available for the same price.

The Saints’ first five fixtures (BUR, eve, LEI, cry, BHA) look particularly appealing and the south coast side’s matches interchange perfectly with West Ham United this season, offering an unbroken run of home matches if assets from both clubs are used in rotation.

Speaking of the Hammers, Winston Reid, Angelo Ogbonna and new signing Issa Diop are the stand-out candidates available at £4.5m. Arthur Masuaku, who attempted more than twice as many take-ons as any other Premier League defender last season en route to collecting three assists, has been reclassified as a midfielder.

New signing Lukasz Fabianski, perhaps surprisingly available at just £4.5m, will though likely be the more popular route into that West Ham backline. It should be noted, however, that the Hammers had the joint-worst defensive record in the Premier League last season.

Rob Holding and Calum Chambers featured prominently in the Arsenal team towards the end of last season as Arsene Wenger prioritised the Europa League, though it remains doubtful whether the pair will be in Unai Emery’s plans for next season.

As one would expect, there is a raft of options available at this price for the newly promoted clubs.

Joe Bennett, Sol Bamba and Bruno Ecuele Manga split Cardiff’s £4.0m and £5.0m-rated defensive assets, while Tim Ream is a near-certain starter for Fulham next season.

Willy Boly, Conor Coady and Matt Doherty are £4.5m-rated options for Wolves, as is Romain Saiss. Although the Moroccan international featured at centre-back for his country at this summer’s World Cup, Saiss was largely deployed alongside Ruben Neves in the centre of midfield last season and has the potential to be an “out of position” asset. Before any Fantasy manager gets too excited, however, Saiss’ duties in the centre of the park are generally restricted to defensive ones.

Jose Holebas, who attempted more crosses than any other Premier League defender last season, appeals after dropping back to the £4.5m mark. Ten other Watford defenders, including the attack-minded Kiko Femenia, are also available at this price.

Wes Morgan, Christian Fuchs and Danny Simpson, staples of Leicester City’s title-winning side, will be expected to play more peripheral roles next season following the arrivals of Jonny Evans and Ricardo Pereira and the emergence of Ben Chilwell.

Bench duty surely awaits Ragnar Klavan at Liverpool too, although there are potential bargains (albeit ageing, unconvincing ones) to be had in the blue half of Merseyside: Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams are among five Evertonians available at £4.5m.

James Tomkins, who scored on three occasions last season and was Crystal Palace’s highest-scoring defender in FPL, is £1.0m cheaper than Patrick van Aanholt, meanwhile.

What are your World Cup Fantasy plans?

What transfers are you making? Who are your captains? Are you using chips?

Think I'll hedge my bets and have defenders from all 4 teams. Griezmann seems to love knockout football, so he's in as captain for day 1

        Griezmann and Kane for me.

I'm on 4 at the back right now. Going to likely be on -4

Up to 1128 rank, used max (c) which worked out perfectly with Maguire as I would have had Neymar 2, Kane 2..

Unfortunately chasing top of my mini league who is currently ranked 80th!

Need some big differentials for the next round.. Have 7 players left inc 4 England so can get 11 + 1 sub for the semis!

Defender differentials look good. Maybe double on some defences?

      Fortunately no hits for me.
Managed to field an eleven with one sub after five transfers.
Transfer hits do not seem worth it in a game with no bonus points.
I have meunier but he is suspended.
The defenders I have are from England and France.
Captain probably Mbappe think the Belgium game will be open.

No bonus is balanced by the ability to sub out players who only get 2 points though..

I'm really looking forward to France Belgium. It won't help my Fantasy team but should be a great game

Did not think of the sub aspect.
Yeah the Belgium/France players will all know each other, and speak a common language.
So there should be plenty of needle in the game.

I did Lukaku -> Hazard to have all 4 penalty takers. In defense I had to change Meunier and TSilva so I prioritized defenders with a goal threat as clean sheets are difficult to predict: Maguire and Stones came in.

Captains will be Hazard and Kane but I am considering Max Cap

15 points behind. Probably will play ˝safe˝ with Kane, but Stones & Kompany as differentials (over Maguire:() If this won`t work I will go with Sterling for finals and few others differentials.

I think semis have bigger chance for an extra times. So I'm loading on defenders, only 1 spot left to consider to replace suspended Meunier.

Is Kompany have bigger chance on set pieces than Jan Verthongen (very likely to cover Mbappe all the time)?

Griezmann (C) >> Kane (C) is my plan.

Up to 240th in world and I'm aiming to get into top 100.
I still have the MC boost available and I only have to transfer out Claesson, Bentacur, Cheryshev and Coutinho. My transfer targets are Alli, Lingard, Fellaini, Pogba and Chadli. Still uncertain on what to do since there's not to many options in the midfield. My captains will be either Griezmann or Hazard and Kane. I'm only using the MC boost in the final round.

6 players out the tournament and Meunier is suspended. But one of them is Inui, who I will hold as he's base price. Meunier stays too for the final/3rd place match.

Looking at lloris, maguire, stones, pogba and fellaini in, croatia aren't brilliant at defending set pieces and this is where England excel. Fellaini seems a fair price for his set piece threat too. Captains will be Mbappe and then Kane, if required. No chips will be used, saving max captain for the next round.

I don't think hits are worth it as there are only 2 rounds to go and you get another 5 free transfers ahead of the final round anyway.

Have 9 atm which will become 14 after Miranda, Coutinho, Quintero, Claesson and Granqvist > Maguire, Hernandez, Alli, Carrasco and Chadli - can't really afford any better midfielders than the last two ...

Torn between Lukaku and Hazard captain - all chips gone. No hits, will go with 14, Tibo as sole keeper!

Not going near him unless desperate. Same with Cedric. They've been reduced to 4.5 because they've proven they're not worth 5.0. But we buy 4.5 defs because we think they are gems, worth 5.0. So it doesn't make sense to me. New season, but I don't expect them score enough points, in any predicatable way, that would be useful in a rotation, or enough to include them in the XI outright. Schlupp or none at the moment for me.

Yeah it's a bit harsh of me to discount Cedric. I would like him to do well, because I've double with him and Bertrand for significant periods over the last two seasons. I'll consider changing my mind closer to the deadline 😀

He created a fair amount of good chances last season, but the Southampton finishing was woeful. Redmond in particular was poor.

True but Southampton have been poor at finishing for a few years now. Isn't that right? I don't know how easy that'll be to coach out of them. A reason to avoid at the start, perhaps.

  3. When do you plan to Wildcard in FPL?
    HamezMace

Are people planning their teams based on anticipating using an early wildcard?

I'm thinking with the uncertainty of players coming back from the world cup our teams for the first 2-3 weeks of the season will look very different once everyone is back to full strength.

I was hoping the early transfer window would help me avoid the early wildcard, but I doubt it now

    1. DJDave1979
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 5 months ago

I think an early WC is likely. The IB is the time I expect the World Cup stars to really bed back into their club sides. As I'm foregoing anyone from the QF onwards, I think a few targets will emerge by the end of August.

    2. Deulofail
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 5 months ago

There's not that much added uncertainty. Plenty of great options who aren't at the world cup. I don't want Sprurs players anyway. I never plan for an early WC, and the WC isn't enough reason to change that for me. The fact that the transfer window is closed early, as you say, will likely have a much bigger impact than the world cup imo, but in the opposite direction.

      1. HamezMace
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

It's not just that we'll want the players who are currently at the world cup, more that them returning to their clubs will change the line ups.

For example players like Luke Shaw, Lamela, Morata, Martial should all start the season for their club sides and could offer great value until the usual first choice players return.

        1. Deulofail

I'm not planning to go anywhere near Shaw, Lamela, Morata or Martial. (Perhaps Martial as a Ramsey placeholder). How long do you really expect players to be out?

I'm definitely not picking rubbish like Shaw which means I'd HAVE to wildcard i get a team out in wk4. Players that luck into a starting berth because of a ligament tear are one thing, players holding a berth for a week or two quite another

          1. HamezMace
            • 11 Years
            7 years, 5 months ago

Shaw is a pretty cheap way into a much coveted Man United defence, and with Young playing every game at the WC, and 33 years old, should be nailed for the first few games at least.

But this is exactly my point. It's quite a typically thing for people to WC in the first few weeks to jump on form players, price rises, and cheap starters, but it's never usually something we plan to do, this year I might break the mould.

            1. Deulofail
              • 9 Years
              7 years, 5 months ago

Why 3 games at least? Where's this number coming from? 🙂

I think typically there are people who do plan for an early WC. And those are the people who do the best in the early GWs, naturally. If you think you probably will WC anyway, it's probably better to commit before GW1.

                • 11 Years
                7 years, 5 months ago

                I didn't say at least, I said 2-3 potentially.

And it's not coming from anywhere specific, but I expect the players involved up to next weekend to be given at least three weeks rest, and then probably a couple of weeks of training before they come back into contention.

I don't think anyone here expects the players who play next weekend will be playing in GW1.

                  7 years, 5 months ago

Apologies, regarding Shaw/Young, that's due to the fact he's played every game in the world cup, and his age.

                2. Deulofail
                  • 9 Years
                  7 years, 5 months ago

Sorry, I took "few" to mean 3. If you think it would be 2-3 weeks rest, then someone could disagree by expecting a player to start in GW 1 or GW2, so I'm not sure what the last point has to do with it (only GW1).

It just seems like your thinking is a little hazy. Like it will all just come together. But 3GWs is a long time (GW4 is in September). And it sounds like you think players will be back before then (around GW3). If you're committing to an early WC, then fair enough, but you might find it hard to figure out the best time (GW2, 3 or 4?), so could find yourself with players on the bench if you WC a week early or a week late (or even at the right time). But I'm not discounting an early WC as a tactic 🙂

Btw I think that "a couple of weeks" of training suggests they'll be back for GW2! It will be difficult to know if a player will start. Managers re unlikely to give that information away 🙂

No need to apologise, my wording was wrong.

I agree, I haven't really thought it through at this stage, hence why I posted the question to see if anyone else was considering it.

Seems like the safest thing to do is just pick players that weren't at the world cup, or who are not at threat from players returning from the world cup.

Yup. World-cup wise, perhaps you could afford one or two players at risk of being displaced when players return, but only if the rest of your team is nailed as nailed can be, which is unlikely. Personally, with at least a couple of non-certs in my team, I don't think I can afford the transfers to get rid of displaced players unless I swap one risk for another.

I am doing this though it irks me.

The team i want in gw 5 will be ver different from gw1 for this exact reason.

A list of players that are doubts at the start

      Kane
      TAA
      Kdb
      Sterling
      Lingard
      Hazard
      Lukaku
      Trippier
      Giroud
      Pogba
      Lloris
      Etc.

I want to maximise others reliance on these players in august before unleashing them after the dust settles

Why wouldn't you want Sterling? Second highest scorer in the game last season. One of the few players that would probably have been in my squad if it wasn't for the World Cup.

Pogba may also turn out to be good value.

Having worked out a couple of squads with and without players in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, there are very few differences. I usually regret a very early wildcard. Better to wait till, say, the second international break.

Nobody's desperate for Sterling, Trippier, Giroud, Pogba or Lloris anyway*

There are so many other options that it's probably not going to be a problem if Sterling comes back all guns blazing. Perhaps that's a reason the FPL were gentler with the pricing this year: so people wouldn't give up before they started (or just after they started!).

Nobody's desperate for any player and there are alternatives to all of them (with the possible exception of Mo Salah) but it would be very unwise to completely overlook the second highest points scorer in the game last season. Far better value than Harry Kane, for instance, unless he regresses. The only problems are his price, the possibility of rotation or regression and using up an MCI slot that you might want to reserve for another player.

Not sure what you're arguing about or why tbh. 😉 You just listed all the reasons why people aren't too worried about leaving a spot for Sterling in their squads, and said that he difference between your current team and the hypothetical team with no World Cup is very small. Well that is everything I am saying! 😀

These WC players aren't essential to our teams anyway. Whether or not you include Sterling in that list is up for debate (although actually no one is essential), but with all the other City options, and all the reasons you listed, I would argue that it would be better to ignore him (and the rest) to get the best team we can now, because it's basically the best team we would get anyway, rather than using the players that won't actually improve your team as a reason to wildcard early or create a suboptimal team with "routes" to incoming players.

I guess you're just jumping on the opportunity to defend Sterling's honour 😀

No, I'm simply refuting your statement that "Nobody wants Sterling, Trippier, Giroud, Pogba or Lloris anyway", which is clearly untrue.

Sterling is on my watchlist, and he will probably be on many other watchlists too. In fact, he is already in 4.5% of teams, and this number would surely be considerably higher if it wasn't for the World Cup.

He may be having a disappointing World Cup, but he had a very successful season for Man City.

Top Mark.s was listing players that we ought to be wary of because of their World Cup involvement, and I probably won't be including any of them in my GW1 squad; there are very few of them that I might have chosen anyway, so I am certainly not intending to play an early wildcard just to bring them in. I can use the odd free transfer instead, or stick with alternatives.

What have you got against him?

My "Nobody wants Sterling, Trippier, Giroud, Pogba or Lloris anyway" comment was a simplification of the point, "there are very few of [the world cup players] that I might have chosen anyway". That's all 🙂

So why didn't you just say "There are very few of them that I would have chosen anyway" in the first place?

I would agree with you on that, but not with your original comment, which wasn't any simpler and implied something quite different.

Kane was always the first name on my team sheet, and barring injury is locked in for the season...but obviously there is little point having him in GW1.
I'm happy going Sane over Sterling.
Lingard and Giroud are two players I'm also watching.

As noted above I'm more interested in a potential differential team for the first, say, three GWs and WC from there.

I’m not, I’m planning on avoiding World Cup players (qf onwards), and will bring them in gradually dependent on form.

I’m resolutely targeting the second international break for the wildcard. I’d sooner take a few early hits to preserve the wc until then

      1. HamezMace
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

With so many premier league players involved at the WC post QFs it might be difficult to bring them in gradually.
The list top.marks posted above has some names we usually see in FPL teams, and more so their returns to PL action will cost a few players who are in our current teams a starting place.

        1. Athletic Bilbo
          • 9 Years

A good reason for not starting with the likes of Aurier, Lamela, Mahrez, Martial etc. You’re forcing yourself into a wildcard if you do that.

            • 11 Years
            7 years, 5 months ago

Okay, but if you're not picking any players who played in the QFs or beyond, and also not picking the players who will likely play in their place, who are you going to pick? Salah and a combination of bottom 10 teams players?

            1. Athletic Bilbo
              • 9 Years
              7 years, 5 months ago

I’m surprised that you think this approach impossible?

For a start, everybody will be including players from the bottom half (whoever that may be) unless they have a team without big hitting captaincy choices.

              Top 6:
              Avoid Spurs.
Man City is rotation central anyway so everything is a punt, and will be all season.
Man U defence unaffected apart from LB. Attack probably best avoided apart from Sanchez.
Liverpool mostly unaffected (Firmino an iron man).
Chelsea attack is broken by World Cup, but Chelsea just look broken full stop. Defence intact.
              Arsenal entirely unaffected.

Every other team in the division unaffected apart from Leicester.

So you basically avoid Spurs entirely for now and the attacks of Chelsea, Man Utd and Leicester (and Maguire).

              It’s not that difficult

I never like rotation rarely works just looks good on paper.
How many times have budget defenders in rotation got a clean sheet in games they were not expected to and blanked in the easy ones.
Another problem with rotation systems three way etc one injury to a player and the system is ruined!
        Which means transfer needed.
But there are always more pressing problems elsewhere then defence during a season.

The Brighton and Hove Albion pair had some of the best Clearance, Block and Interception (CBI) statistics in 2017/18 and were desperately unfortunate not to convert their combined 55 chances into more than the one goal."

That's not true. Dunk scored at least 4 goals last season.

Have Lukaku + Kane as 2 of my strikers and need to replace Neymar, my rivals above me have a mixture of Mbappe, Griezzman, Hazard in there so I'm thinking I should ignore them and try and go differential to make up points.. Is this the best tactic?

I'm thinking either Sterling or Giroud are the obvious options?

Anybody thinking about bringing Mahrez in early and having four City? Save transfer gwk 1 and have 4 City at home to Huddersfield gwk 2 then 2 transfers going into gwk 3 to bring in bandwagons/returning World Cup players.

Assuming you have three mid/att and one def, it'll be difficult to pick three mid/att who are guaranteed to start in GW2

True. Definitely a risk. I’m putting Ederson, Mahrez, Dilva, Kun in for now and making sure not to take any more risks with the rest of the squad. I’ll probably end up changing before the season begins but nice option to have and will prevent me from tinkering endlessly for the next few weeks as I won’t be able to make any changes!

Come on, guys. So much effort into crafting articles. Why not put ten seconds into a headline.

Fuchs, Ake. It's a story about FPL defenders. Make it LESS boring with the headline

There is another argument that the way they used to have headlines anyone new to the site would struggle to know what they are on about.
Some of the headlines were getting a bit obscure.
But now it has gone full circle.

Wish Chelsea would sort out managerial situation, don't fancy any of their assets until it's sorted. Morata might even end up being good value if someone new comes in

If either Morata, or even better Giroud, could nail down a starting spot, they would be very good options.

But I agree, they need to sort the manager situation out quickly.

Anyone leaving any money in the bank with thier gw1 team.
I just picked players who I think could do well on gw1 it left me with 1.5m in the bank.
Then gives flexibility to move to 'value' players if needs be.

I've banked 1.5m with my current draft, but inevitably I'll find a way to spend it all by the time GW1 begins. Always do!

I'm certainly not AIMING to leave money in the bank but it's a nice position to be in to be happy with your team yet have flexibility to move.

I have 4m in the Eliteserien bank for instance.

I didn't plan it was just accidental.
Realised Daniels has more chance of a clean sheet gw1 then Mendy has.
So why start Mendy who may not even start / clean sheet unlikely etc

Nope, I barely have enough money as it is. Will cover all the big price points though (11mil, 9.5, 7 fwds, 13/10, 9, 7.5, 5 mil mids).

He went on my watch-list after this article promoted teams normally have not got the cash to splash
So they are more then likely going to change little.
Always need at least one 4.0 defender at some stage during the season.
