Preparations for the 2018/19 Fantasy Premier League season went into overdrive this week as our community said goodbye to the World Cup.

While those who won their McDonald’s World Cup Fantasy leagues celebrated, we started looking in more detail at the upcoming domestic season.

We’ve got all the latest Community Articles, discussion topics, tables, and tournaments from the last seven days.

Community Articles

Toberlone52 produced an article on the interesting strategy of covering price points as opposed to teams in the early part of the season to enable greater movement in the transfer market.

The rather unfortunate Deulofail wrote a piece on Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward (£4.5m) when it looked like he might get a shot at the number one jersey at Anfield, analysing who he could rotate best with. Sadly for Deulofail the shot stopper has now signed for Leicester and Alisson has joined Jurgen Klopp’s charges.

The Hottest Topics

With the Premier League pre-season well underway, our community has been discussing how much we can read into the friendly fixtures which take place over the summer. Loftus-Queef reminded us of Alex Iwobi’s excellent form in non-competitive matches last year before failing to deliver on his promise, while TheDonald discussed how much the Community Shield can teach us.

The unknown quanitities of players new to the Premier League was another key talking point as the off-season rolls on. ZoumasBloomers asked the community which new options looked the most exciting and Norman Conquest issued a warning about those who have come up from the Championship.

As Fantasy managers get further into their plans for the new FPL season, several of you looked at the value of some important players. Olivier Bernards Watch divided points-per-match from last season against new price points to help factor in assets who only played part of 2017/18, while Chelsea Harbour revealed his thoughts on those who have been under and overpriced by the 2018/19 player costs.

The big changes news at Manchester United and Chelsea shaped our debates this week too. We talked up Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez after Jose Mourinho said they would start the season up front and AEK started a conversation about what Maurizio Sarri will change at Chelsea.

MikeHarbrw identified which teams are capable of scoring three or more goals in matches this season.

From more of a house-keeping perspective, we confirmed that we’ve solved problems relating to staying logged in and announced that our Watchlist is now live, and being updated along with the Rate My Team tool and our projections.

Lastly, there was some good discussion over who to hand the captaincy to in the World Cup final, thanks to Legomané.

Community Tables

The devil is in the details when it comes to FPL and our community members have been working hard on creating tables to help us improve our value picks for 2018/19.

FPL Virgin has created a comparison of forwards priced below £7.0m, sorted by shots in the box, to see who could be the most effective third striker this season.

vijayc has looked at mid-price midfielders to see which of the options below £9.0m look set to score the most goals in 2018/19.

Finally, dnglos is on the lookout for clean sheets, sorting last season’s defensive records by goal attempts allowed in the box.

Community Tournaments

TorresMagic™ has launched his sixth annual Last Man Standing competition this week, where a portion of FPL managers in the mini-league are eliminated each Gameweek. Find details of how to join HERE.

Meanwhile, our World Cup Fantasy mini-leagues came to a close this week after Sunday’s final and we can confirm the following winners.

A reminder to all that we always welcome new Community Article submissions. It is best to email me when submitting a Community Article, as there isn’t currently an automated notification letting us know it has been submitted.

Equally, if you have an idea for a Hot Topic or discussion that needs more visibility, feel free to flag it or email me directly: geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

And finally, another reminder to use your voting powers. Upvotes help mods spot useful content, as we often use the ‘Sort By: Rating’ functionality, which we can then sticky or Hot Topic it. This is increasingly important as we approach the beginning of the season!

Nice team but my concerns would be:

      1) No Auba could hurt

      2) Realistically you have only one captain option each week.

      3) Triple Everton is too much imo

      1. Scotty B
        • 14 Years

        1) Auba has City and Chelsea first two and could be deployed out wide
        2) Salah captain every week for me next season unless he is injured or suspended
        3) their fixtures at the start warrant a triple up imo they are going to be top 5/6 this season

        1. FPL Mentor
          • 11 Years

Auba vs a weakend Man City defence and a slow Chelsea backline. I fancy him to get returns in both games. He then has an amazinggg stretch of fixtures for about 8-10 weeks. Wouldnt want to be playing catch up trying to get him in later down the line.

Salah captain is all well and good but its still only 1 heavy hitter in that front 6. Im guessing if others have Salah(C) too they will have another heavy hitter likely to outscore you.

Its Everton, people thought the same last season. Gamble could pay off but its a big if. They are unreliable and we havent seen anything to warrant a triple up imo. Their fixtures are decent on paper.

Hope it all works out for you.

What’s the rational behind everyone not going for Kane?

Obviously his August dry spell is a factor but the guy just won the World Cup golden boot, nothing can give a world class footballer more confidence than that! Plus he’s cutting his holiday short because he wants to beat his August drought which he’s joked about himself.

Why are so many people just ignoring him?

    Am I missing something?

If he scores in the first game (he’s made it clear he intends to push for a start by coming back early from his holiday) then you’ll have to make two transfer to get him in...

    Is he not essential?

    1. TheDonald
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 1 month ago

I’m going for Salah instead. Kane could be a great pick, but yhe lacked Salah’s consistency last season, plus you can’t have them all.

Won't be back up to speed until after international break.
Not bring ignored. Just a waste of space at the moment.
      That's what transfers are for.

Something tells me he’ll bang them in from the start this season.

Maybe it’s a punt... seems like a very obvious one to me

It’s fitting him & Salah in the team that is the issue, costing too many point elsewhere...

    3. Andy_Social

At that price the player needs to be captained. Most people are buying Salah and giving him the armband. That makes Kane not good value for his price.

Then there's the August curse, and Spurs starting with mostly away games until their stadium is ready, then getting used to a new stadium.

i wouldn't begrudge him the golden boot, not as if pens are gimmes (just ask Ronaldo and Messi) but his overall play did not scream pick me pronto

    5. AndyCook
      8 years, 1 month ago

At that price if you are not going to captain because you have Salah he really needs to be scoring at least 7 ppg to justify value, whilst he did win he golden boot at the World Cup he looked fatigued and didn’t look like a player ready to smash them in come August. For me I think he is less likely to score 7 ppg than he is to achieve that so I’ll be spending money elsewhere

      1. AndyCook
        8 years, 1 month ago

It depends on whether you think salah will match last season's output.
If you do then it's a no brainer.... combine firmino + manes points from last season and then compare them to salahs total.
That's before you factor in double points for salah captain.
That bring said, I think salah + firmino could be gold this season

Couple of questions would be happy to get some feedback:

With Watford's opening fixtures, who do we think could go big? I like holebas and pereyra.

At Everton, is Richarlison at 6.5 the best midfield option? Currently transferred him in for Walcott.

Saves funds. You dont pay 50m for a bench warmer. Richarlison over Walcott, definitely.

As much as as Kane's August curse is a thing, can't help thinking that he's nailed+talismanic to spurs. Plus his price makes it easy for a downgrade.
    Thoughts?

    Foster-Lössl
    Robertson-Sakho-Shaw-Cedric-Peltier
    Salah-Mkhitaryan-Richarlison-Jota-Kenedy
    Kane-Aubameyang-Madine

0.5 ITB to spare. Not sure where to invest, if this is indeed viable. Feeling like im going mad with Kane in August!

    Good balance?
    Ederson
    PVA, Shaw, Ward, Cedric (Pelt)
    Salah, Sane, Martial (Masu, Step)
    Firm, Zaha, Aguero/Auba

Looks light in defence but would only ever have to start one of Cedric, Peltier, Masu or Stephens

I would. I fell for the Southampton-easy-opening-fixtures con last year, not this time. I'd not have Martial - he might only start one game and then get dropped for Lukaku.

    2. AndyCook
      8 years, 1 month ago

Shaw is a risk, not many you can swap to at that price point, maybe Kola, TAA or Lovren is they come back nailed but if not you have an awkward transfer to make potentially. Wouldn’t have PVA over other palace defenders, I’d probably get Tomkins and Shaw to Robertson

      1. AndyCook

Oh you have Ward too.. I’d shuffle the funds in defence more.

Thoughts on this team, with an early wildcard GW4/5:

    Ederson (4.0)
    Mendy, TAA, Shaw, Tomkins (Wan-Bissaka)
    Salah, Eriksen, Mahrez, Martial (Stephens)
    Aubameyang, Arnautovic (4.5)

If you intend to wild card so quick, you don't want anyone who might be rested for GW1. I'm looking at TAA. You don't want terrible early fixtures - Arnie. You don't want anyone who will play in a shell of a team - Eriksen.

My feeling about Spurs is that with so many first team regulars missing, the team will be disjointed and not perform well. Happy to be proved wrong, but I'm going without.

I'm not too moved by the Kasper rumours. I feel his destiny is to end up at United like his dad, which means waiting maybe a year. Chelsea have to get used to a whole new system with heavy pressing and going by Spurs and Liverpool's experiences, it makes the better part of a season to get it right, so I won't be jumping on any of their assets from the outset unless Moses is played in a front 3.

I do like your back line, but I think you're missing a trick with a bunch of naff midfielders. Given you are captaining Salah, you'd get more value from c9m midfielders than 11-12 m strikers, imo.

Your team suffers for that front three, I'd downgrade at least one of not two of them and spread the funds around. Your defence is weak as well.

Whole point of defence is to be cheap contribute attacking returns as well as handful of clean sheets. Obviously if Wolves or Southampton are playing Man City away I would switch to 3 at the back. Team offers flexibility.

    Ederson/4.0
    Robbo/Mendy/Bailly/Ward/Wan-Bis
    Salah/Eriksen/Dilva/Hughes/Cairney
    Auba/Austin/Barnes

Been toying with this squad. Like the flexibility it gives me. Plan to play 4-5-1, but it allows 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 (more rarely) as form and fixtures allow.

Is there too much flexibility though? Meaning, have I spread my £s too equitably after my first 8?

Not crazy about Dilva long-term, but figure he won’t be bad to have in the opening weeks and can be switched out for someone in the £7-7,5 range as value in that price range becomes more clear while also strengthening elsewhere.

    Thoughts appreciated.

I think you've thought it through well and have a very nice squad.

With Burnley in Europe you'll want to check if Barnes or Wood starts PL matches; if it isn't Barnes just swap him for another forward bench fodder who will start.

if Ward is a risk for similar reasons, just have Tarks or Mee who are less likely to be rotated.

Thanks! Had similar thought on Tark/Mee to minimize risk. Their total inability to convert any opportunity in 17/18 held me back. But 2 or 6 pts is better than 0. If Barnes is featuring in UEL, plan is to take a punt on Gray, Jimenez, etc.
