Preparations for the 2018/19 Fantasy Premier League season went into overdrive this week as our community said goodbye to the World Cup.

While those who won their McDonald’s World Cup Fantasy leagues celebrated, we started looking in more detail at the upcoming domestic season.

We’ve got all the latest Community Articles, discussion topics, tables, and tournaments from the last seven days.

Community Articles

Toberlone52 produced an article on the interesting strategy of covering price points as opposed to teams in the early part of the season to enable greater movement in the transfer market.

The rather unfortunate Deulofail wrote a piece on Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward (£4.5m) when it looked like he might get a shot at the number one jersey at Anfield, analysing who he could rotate best with. Sadly for Deulofail the shot stopper has now signed for Leicester and Alisson has joined Jurgen Klopp’s charges.

The Hottest Topics

With the Premier League pre-season well underway, our community has been discussing how much we can read into the friendly fixtures which take place over the summer. Loftus-Queef reminded us of Alex Iwobi’s excellent form in non-competitive matches last year before failing to deliver on his promise, while TheDonald discussed how much the Community Shield can teach us.

The unknown quanitities of players new to the Premier League was another key talking point as the off-season rolls on. ZoumasBloomers asked the community which new options looked the most exciting and Norman Conquest issued a warning about those who have come up from the Championship.

As Fantasy managers get further into their plans for the new FPL season, several of you looked at the value of some important players. Olivier Bernards Watch divided points-per-match from last season against new price points to help factor in assets who only played part of 2017/18, while Chelsea Harbour revealed his thoughts on those who have been under and overpriced by the 2018/19 player costs.

The big changes news at Manchester United and Chelsea shaped our debates this week too. We talked up Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez after Jose Mourinho said they would start the season up front and AEK started a conversation about what Maurizio Sarri will change at Chelsea.

MikeHarbrw identified which teams are capable of scoring three or more goals in matches this season.

From more of a house-keeping perspective, we confirmed that we’ve solved problems relating to staying logged in and announced that our Watchlist is now live, and being updated along with the Rate My Team tool and our projections.

Lastly, there was some good discussion over who to hand the captaincy to in the World Cup final, thanks to Legomané.

Community Tables

The devil is in the details when it comes to FPL and our community members have been working hard on creating tables to help us improve our value picks for 2018/19.

FPL Virgin has created a comparison of forwards priced below £7.0m, sorted by shots in the box, to see who could be the most effective third striker this season.

vijayc has looked at mid-price midfielders to see which of the options below £9.0m look set to score the most goals in 2018/19.

Finally, dnglos is on the lookout for clean sheets, sorting last season’s defensive records by goal attempts allowed in the box.

Community Tournaments

TorresMagic™ has launched his sixth annual Last Man Standing competition this week, where a portion of FPL managers in the mini-league are eliminated each Gameweek. Find details of how to join HERE.

Meanwhile, our World Cup Fantasy mini-leagues came to a close this week after Sunday’s final and we can confirm the following winners.

A reminder to all that we always welcome new Community Article submissions. It is best to email me when submitting a Community Article, as there isn’t currently an automated notification letting us know it has been submitted.

Equally, if you have an idea for a Hot Topic or discussion that needs more visibility, feel free to flag it or email me directly: geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

And finally, another reminder to use your voting powers. Upvotes help mods spot useful content, as we often use the ‘Sort By: Rating’ functionality, which we can then sticky or Hot Topic it. This is increasingly important as we approach the beginning of the season!

So would u prefer 4.0 nailed on Wan-Bissaka at RB or OOP at wing Schlupp for 4.5?

I think he is. They have only got Townsend for winger positions.

The problem with Wan-B is, i'm never gonna start him ever when i have PvA starting every week. Can't see my self ever wanting to double up on palace DEF regardless of them having great fixtures.

    How’s this 4-3-3 look?

Would depend on Chelsea signing Schmeichel.

    Schmeichel
    Robertson, Mendy, PVA, Douglas
    Salah, Mahrez, Jota
    Aguero, Firmino, Wood

    4.0, Masuaku, Stephens, Peltier

    RMT, thoughts appreciated!

    DDG
    Robertson Mendy Cedric
    Salah Mkhi DSilva Neves
    AgueroFirmino Austin

    Speroni Cairney Tomkins Peltier

May do Auba instead of Aguero, but city fixtures look too tempting.

What gives him the edge over the other 6.5’s do you think? He has Jota, Theo, Mili, Sessegnon, Lamela, Richarlison etc for competition?

Set pieces, plays for the best team (Lolmela excluded) and will be involved in most things as he currently is the main source of creativity for Leicester. Also, he loves making throughballs and Vardy loves recieving them

We will if we don't replace Mahrez even to some degree. We addressed all our weak spots from last season with our signings so far, just took a step back losing Mahrez obviously. Rudkin has had 18 months to work on a replacement though so I'm not too worried. We've got loads of young talent that is only going to get better.

From those I'm tempted by Richarlison if he moves and Jota(though he is a bit of a wait and see for me). Maddison is gonna be on all set pieces for a proven prenier league side so it should be easier for him to settle in as compared to someone like Jota where everybody around him is in the epl for the first time too. I love wolves and Jota.. but maddison has set pieces to fall back on while the other 2 don't

I'm watching Maddison so hard. An NCFC season-ticket holder was trying to convince me the other day that he's the absolute future in every parallel universe and he should have gone somehwere like Chelsea. 6.5 is such and amazing price-point this year I'm almost considering ripping up my current structure in order to get two of them. Currently on Lamela - would be more tempted by Maddison if he had a better first fixture.

Agree re two slots in that price range. I am currently on two slots in 7.5-6.5 and may even consider another as the season rolls on if form indicates a need for it.

    West Ham
    Adrian
    Fredericks Diop Rice Masuaku
    Noble obiang Wilshere
    Yarmolenko Arnie Snodgrass

Wilshere will probably be allowed to get forward a lot maybe even in the hole of a 4231. Arnie still striker as I expect him to stay. With obiang now staying I expect rice to be used at CB. Excited to watch Wilshere, Yarmolenko and Fredericks. Masuaku in good form too could be a good 4.5 if he’s expectedly playing like a winger.

With Eriksen most likely start gw1 and Kane targeting a gw1 start as well, I just can't resist myself not having a Spurs asset from the off. (Lamela is a transfer waiting to happen)

    4.5
    Robertson - Mendy - Shaw
    Salah - Mahrez/Silva - Eriksen - Richarlison - Hughes(Wat)
    Zaha - Aubameyang

    4.5 - Quaner/Kamara - 4.5 - WanBissaka

    Thoughts?

He’ll start the season but expect a medium to long-term injury after 3 or 4 weeks.

Adama Traoré has 2 offers right now: Wolverhampton and Huddersfield. He prefers Wolves but Huddersfield is in the race too. Middlesbrough want he stay but Adama wants to play in Premier League. 18 millions is the release clause.

Hope he won't join Wolves. That would totally kill Costa as an option.

I think Adama Traore is actually the fastest player I have ever seen play. Just a shame about the rest of his game.

They already have good wingers and decent strikers. For 18 million not sure he'd be doing much for them. At least it would suit Huddersfields transfer policy since promotion - sign Tier 2 Championship talent in the vain hope that they'll get better

He's a bit silly for wanting to play PL. It's clear his pace and strength aren't enough to compensate for the rest of his game in the top tier

Why would you want that 🙁 would mean extra attacking rotation tho it means cavaleiro on the way out. Be a really top signing for hudds tho

Even though the 4.5mids aren't at all tempting, I tend to agree that Douuglas will out-score Cairney so switching to a primary 442 might make sense. If Fulham fire it could be close, though.

    Dilemma here,

was previously on PvA and 2x4.5 rotation, undecided yet but say i had Holgate / Holebas to give me: BHA SOU CRY HUD WHU ful FUL BOU in the first 8.

However if i did a 4.0 and 4.5 rotation with Wan-B and say Daniels and got a 6.0 defender such as Bavies (have Mendy, Robbo already) which of the two options outscores the other? (note: CRY/BOU rotation: CAR whu wat SOU hud NEW CRY wat in the first 8)

      Wat

Oh I think I get it. Honestly I think Davies is good but no point owning defenders unless the team looks shipshape, which Spurs don't atm. For that reason, and the fact that I wouldn't own any other 6.0s, I would go for option A

We all like a punt in FF - be it a big signing from abroad who has never played in the Prem or someone cheap coming in under the radar.

And we’ve all be burnt in the past!

With that in mind what is the maximum number of punts you are prepared to take?

    1. Deulofail
      • 10 Years

Depends on how punty they are, their price/position and whether I have a strong bench to supoort absentees.

      1. Oooof

I would define it as a player with no proven track record in FF such as an overseas player or a championship player stepping up.

Ok, according to this definition I have 5, but two are on my bench anyway.

        2. Deulofail

I wrote this before your definition:

At this stage, for example, Bellerin is expected to be number one choice for the RB slot, but the new manager could be willing to give Lichsteiner a shot. We might say that Bellerin is 85% nailed for the first 10 GWs.

Mahrez is expected to start the first game at least, and then he's in competition with lots of other options. However, I fancy him to start more than half the games, even from the start, which could put him at about 70% nailed for the first 10 GWs.

Likewise TAA seems to be expected to become nailed after he returns to action. Given that he's likely to miss 1-3 games at the start of the season, you might say that he's 50% nailed for the first 10GWs.

Martial and Shaw is expected to start the first (and possibly the second) game through default. Some might favour them to win the spot, but for the sake of argument, you might say that they are also 50% nailed for the first 10 GWs.

So, if you go for Bellerin and Mahrez in your 15-man squad, you might expect them to start 15-16 games of 20 in the first 10 GWs. This allows you to manage rotation from the bench for the other 4-5 games, with 1 decent player as cover, and another, cheaper value player who can cover if both are rested/dropped in the same GW (less important as these players are much less likely to both play 0 minutes in a GW unless injured).

If you go for Martial and TAA/Clyne/Shaw in your squad, you might only expect to get 10/20 starts from 10 GWs. Which means you either need a stronger bench (2 decent options just to cover these two players), or you need to be prepared to make an early transfer (or WC).

So for me, it seems 2 punts are a maximum if you define "punt" as likely to start fewer than 9/10 matches (could stretch to 3 with a strong bench). But if you're talking about players likely to play fewer than 7/10 matches, I feel like 2 is pushing the boundaries (though still viable), with 1 being the more likely maximum for me.

Hope that's interesting or useful to some degree, I think the main thing to remember is that the bench is there to cover all XI players in your starting XI, so you have to include the possibilities of non-punts being injured or unexpectedly dropped/rotated in your method. 🙂

If punts are only players with no track record, I think you can still considered how nailed they are. How likely they are to score points when they play is a matter of value, really. These players are naturally less punty than unnailed players because they are priced based, on some level, according to expected points output. If that's what a punt is, then I don't see an issue with completely filling your team with them, so long as you reach the 100m spending limit!

Beeing punty could give you a massive disadvantage in that the players comes in as subs, which usually kills your points total and there is a question of value as well, you could end up losing value if they don´t start. But there is always several strategies, and if one to say goes punty the structural set up in your team could cope with the issues if stemmed right from the beginning, so the question of how many punts must also take into account how your team is set up. For me Keita is enough i think as punt, maybe Douglas too. Great response you had by the way-)

Arguably most picks are punty before the season starts and form develops. I currently have 3-8 punts in my team atm friending on how you look at it.

      1. I’ve gone both at the moment, if I had to pick one I’d go for Sane.

    Ederson
    Shaw Davies Bellerin Robertson Coleman
    Sane Salah Silva
    Aubameyang Zaha

    Subs: Boruc, Cairney, Masuaku, Madine

This is my current team but our any of these other options better ?

    A. Davies out, Arnie in 4-3-3

    B. Davies out, Richarlison or 6.5 4-4-2

    C. Keep current team
