Preparations for the 2018/19 Fantasy Premier League season went into overdrive this week as our community said goodbye to the World Cup.

While those who won their McDonald’s World Cup Fantasy leagues celebrated, we started looking in more detail at the upcoming domestic season.

We’ve got all the latest Community Articles, discussion topics, tables, and tournaments from the last seven days.

Community Articles

Toberlone52 produced an article on the interesting strategy of covering price points as opposed to teams in the early part of the season to enable greater movement in the transfer market.

The rather unfortunate Deulofail wrote a piece on Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward (£4.5m) when it looked like he might get a shot at the number one jersey at Anfield, analysing who he could rotate best with. Sadly for Deulofail the shot stopper has now signed for Leicester and Alisson has joined Jurgen Klopp’s charges.

The Hottest Topics

With the Premier League pre-season well underway, our community has been discussing how much we can read into the friendly fixtures which take place over the summer. Loftus-Queef reminded us of Alex Iwobi’s excellent form in non-competitive matches last year before failing to deliver on his promise, while TheDonald discussed how much the Community Shield can teach us.

The unknown quanitities of players new to the Premier League was another key talking point as the off-season rolls on. ZoumasBloomers asked the community which new options looked the most exciting and Norman Conquest issued a warning about those who have come up from the Championship.

As Fantasy managers get further into their plans for the new FPL season, several of you looked at the value of some important players. Olivier Bernards Watch divided points-per-match from last season against new price points to help factor in assets who only played part of 2017/18, while Chelsea Harbour revealed his thoughts on those who have been under and overpriced by the 2018/19 player costs.

The big changes news at Manchester United and Chelsea shaped our debates this week too. We talked up Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez after Jose Mourinho said they would start the season up front and AEK started a conversation about what Maurizio Sarri will change at Chelsea.

MikeHarbrw identified which teams are capable of scoring three or more goals in matches this season.

From more of a house-keeping perspective, we confirmed that we’ve solved problems relating to staying logged in and announced that our Watchlist is now live, and being updated along with the Rate My Team tool and our projections.

Lastly, there was some good discussion over who to hand the captaincy to in the World Cup final, thanks to Legomané.

Community Tables

The devil is in the details when it comes to FPL and our community members have been working hard on creating tables to help us improve our value picks for 2018/19.

FPL Virgin has created a comparison of forwards priced below £7.0m, sorted by shots in the box, to see who could be the most effective third striker this season.

vijayc has looked at mid-price midfielders to see which of the options below £9.0m look set to score the most goals in 2018/19.

Finally, dnglos is on the lookout for clean sheets, sorting last season’s defensive records by goal attempts allowed in the box.

Community Tournaments

TorresMagic™ has launched his sixth annual Last Man Standing competition this week, where a portion of FPL managers in the mini-league are eliminated each Gameweek. Find details of how to join HERE.

Meanwhile, our World Cup Fantasy mini-leagues came to a close this week after Sunday’s final and we can confirm the following winners.

A reminder to all that we always welcome new Community Article submissions. It is best to email me when submitting a Community Article, as there isn’t currently an automated notification letting us know it has been submitted.

Equally, if you have an idea for a Hot Topic or discussion that needs more visibility, feel free to flag it or email me directly: geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

And finally, another reminder to use your voting powers. Upvotes help mods spot useful content, as we often use the ‘Sort By: Rating’ functionality, which we can then sticky or Hot Topic it. This is increasingly important as we approach the beginning of the season!

Which structure are you currently on? Last season I remember there was the "power midfield", are you going with something like that or big at the back, or up front?

I'm currently musing over 2 drafts, in one, my forward line is Firmino, Auba and Aguero, with a midfield of Salah, Jota, Mahrez, Cairney and Ward. I'm thinking I may just go with this as the other one has Sanchez and Kamara in place of Mahrez and Firmino and although Sanchez would be a nice differential to start, differentials haven't always helped me in the past lol

I think a five man midfield is the way to go as the ‘centre forward’ seems to have been phased out of the game for now.

I’m going for balance. We’re sure to miss on some value picks, and some of the premium options will flop. Best to be able to pivot easily rather than commit early to a particular structure.

433 is the most common of my draft teams, mainly because I rate Arnie and Zaha who could be great value compared to the premium strikers, and due to rotation concerns in midfield. There's a question mark over Zaha's future now, but I still end up on 433 without him.

A few other drafts have been 343 or 442 which I can me moving towards when teams are more established. I want to do more stat analysis before the season starts to get a feel for the importance of balance early on - it could be key, especially due to world cup.

      Realistically:

KdB plays centrally and they had least options there (along with D Silva)

Sterling, Sané, Mahrez roll a dice, they'll be heavily rotated but who knows how.

Aguero and Jesus you can toss a coin due to rotation.

Where can i get data on weekly points/stats for every player for previous seasons? Someone linked me to a website last season (not on FFS), so I know it exists, but can't find the link now.

Can't remember. Season points/minutes are probably more important. Easy enough to check a player's history vs a club.

Agreed on seasons and minutes, that's why I immediately made a couple of tables on each. It doesn't tell you that much about current form though, and if you want to do really well you need to buy/sell the right players at the right times. I want a strategy for this before the season starts as I'm quite new to fpl.

Current form is last 4 to 6 GWs of last season at best or just starts fresh.
Players in form normally hold it.

If you’re gonna downgrade Auba to some crud like Laca you may as well get Ramsey and Mkhi instead for value.

Auba or go for the mids.

“If he plays” for 9.5. Exactly.

I guess if you see him play the first 3 or so you could bring him in. Starting with him seems too high a risk

inb4 Laca starts up front and you're paying £11m for a winger

      1. AndyCook
        8 years, 1 month ago

There’s a certain winger at 13 million that everyone has. It depends on the winger

Not planning on ever benching Mendy - especially not for a Bournemouth defender.

If he is injured or rotated, then my bench comes into play.

    Patrício, Foster
Bellerin, van Aanholt, Alexander-Arnold, Douglas, Cedric

For me I wouldn’t have romeu. He is too defensive and will get too many bookings. I know he will probs be a sub for you but maybe look at gunnarson at Cardiff or chalobah at watford

Bennett, Douglas, Jota. Is that overload?

They do seem like the best options in their price brackets to me.

Wan-Bissaka is tempting, as is Richarlison.

I have Shaw also, but Douglas is a better long term pick anyway.

Think Wolves present some real value opportunities this year. I see them as this year's Burnley.

I'm currently on Douglas and Costa for money reasons, but would be happy with Patricio, Boly, Jota or a punt on Jiminez or Bennett.

Anyone else watch the Leicester game? Gray, King and Maddison were the stand out performers. Maddison on free kicks and corners, got an assist from the corner for Morgan goal. He looks like an fantastic signing.

A'noon all. Any thoughts on this? Early drafts had Bobby for Zaha and less funds in mf:

    Fab (4.0)
    Mendy - Robbo - PVA
    Salah (c) - Mahrez - Martial - Maddison
    Auba - Arnie - Zaha

Subs - Ward, Bennet, Wan B
