A starting price of £6.5m for a midfielder who plays for a club newly promoted to the Premier League is an eyebrow-raiser.

But then, Diogo Jota – who has UEFA Champions League experience and 14 Portugal under-21 caps to his name – is no ordinary, Championship-level midfield workhorse and Wolverhampton Wanderers are no naive top-flight rookies.

While survival will be the primary target for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side next season, the West Midlands club has significant financial resources, access to a well-connected super-agent, an intelligent head coach and a gifted young squad that should see them hold their own in the Premier League.

Jota was one of six astute loan signings made by Santo last season (including centre-half Willy Boly and striker Leo Bonatini), all of whom played a part in Wolves’ promotion-winning campaign.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder’s contribution was as important as any Wolves player’s in 2017/18, with Jota finishing as the Championship winners’ leading goal-scorer on 17 league goals.

Jota has made his move to Molineux permanent over the summer, the deal having been agreed with parent club Atletico Madrid in January.

While fellow Portuguese star Ruben Neves (£5.0m) – sitting in over 15% of Fantasy Premier League squads – is the most popular Wolves asset in FPL at this early stage, Jota has also attracted significant investment – his ownership of 8.1% is higher than that of Theo Walcott, Richarlison and Cesc Fabregas, among others, in the same price band.

The History

Having spent his formative years with Gondomar SC and Pacos Ferreira, Jota began his senior career with the latter club in 2014/15.

Scoring one goal and assisting another on his debut in Pacos’ 4-0 cup win over Atletico SC Reguengos, Jota then went on to make ten league appearances for the Primeira Liga side, scoring on a further two occasions.

An excellent 2015/16 season in which he scored 12 Portuguese top-flight goals led to a move to Atletico Madrid, but the young attacking midfielder was not to make a solitary appearance for the Spanish giants.

A season-long loan with Porto in 2016/17 saw Jota in and out of the first team, with 12 of his 27 league appearances coming as a substitute. The youngster was on the scoresheet on eight occasions, three of which came in the 4-0 win over Nacional early in the season.

Jota’s first taste of Champions League action peaked with a goal in the 5-0 win over Leicester City in December of that campaign.

That Wolves were able to convince the young Portuguese midfielder to move to a side playing in the English second tier in the summer of 2017 demonstrated the club’s financial muscle and ambition.

As well as scoring on 17 occasions, Jota registered five assists across Wolves’ promotion-winning campaign.

The Prospects

Playing much of last season on the left of a front three in Santo’s unwavering 3-4-3 formation, Jota has also, on occasion, been deployed as the spearhead in the Wolves attack.

Jota indeed started as the nominated “centre-forward” in Wolves’ 1-1 friendly draw with Ajax, with fellow Portuguese wingers Helder Costa and Diego Cavaleiro flanking him.

It remains to be seen in which position Jota starts the season and all eyes will be on Wolves’ remaining four pre-season friendlies to ascertain further clues. Jota certainly has competition up top: Mexican striker Raul Jimenez has arrived from parent club Benfica on a season-long deal, while Wolves have made Leo Bonatini’s loan move a permanent one over the summer.

Bonatini scored on 12 occasions in 2017/18 but all of his goals came in the first half of the season, with the Brazilian striker subsequently enduring a five-month barren spell and losing his place in the side.

Santo may, meanwhile, decide to gradually ease Jimenez into English football following his loan move. The Mexico international is far from guaranteed to plunder league goals: in four seasons with Atletico Madrid and Benfica, Jimenez has not hit double figures once.

Jimenez’s physicality and ability to bring his team-mates into play may ultimately see him lead the line, but Jota is a goal threat in whichever position he plays. The Portuguese midfielder, indeed, scored in the 2-1 win over Basel on July 10 while drifting in from the left flank.

Jota’s total of 120 goal attempts last season was unsurpassed by any other Wolves player (only Brentford’s Ollie Watkins had more in the Championship), as was his minutes-per-shot average of 30.3.

Eighty-three of Jota’s 120 shots were from inside the opposition penalty area; those tempted by Ruben Neves’ budget price should note that the £5.0m-rated midfielder only had three efforts on goal from inside the box.

Jota also edged his compatriot in terms of creativity, producing 53 key passes to Neves’ 37.

Appearing in 44 of Wolves’ 46 league matches last season, Jota looks like a fairly nailed pick this time out – something that can’t be said for several other midfielders in the £6.5m price bracket (Juan Mata, Pedro, Cesc Fabregas, Erik Lamela etc).

Wolves face only two of last season’s top six sides in the first ten Gameweeks, a run of fixtures that includes home matches against Everton, Burnley, Southampton and Watford.

Whilst spending £6.5m on a midfielder playing for a newly promoted side constitutes something of a “punt”, this is a Wolves squad with a wealth of international and European experience to their name. The step up to the Premier League should be far less daunting for Jota and co than it will be for the average top-flight new boys.

Even the DZ has gone to sh** on here and it such a shame.
This used to be a place to actually discuss different ideas, offer advice and most importantly be able to disagree/ have other opinions and be able to articulate these with understanding of the others position.
Its like someone has given internet access to a bunch of 8 year olds high on Fanta.
This current period of time the trend seems to be 'No Salah, no good'. Boring and pointless.
If you could back it up with captaincy stats, things about ownership etc all good. If you had understanding, and articulated it, that the money saved gives a more rounded team and a few captain option also all good.
Good luck to the few old school and sensible posters still about.

I'll have a go at a constructive post about the downside of a no Salah team. The captaincy issue is a an obvious one, but the main thing that puts me off it is that in every draft I've seen without Salah (and they do look very balanced, no doubt), I also see some obvious places where money could have saved / better value could have been identified.

Basically if you have any 10.0+ million players in your team, I think you could have stretched it to 13.0m and been thrifty somewhere else, in order to get yourself the player most likely to score the highest number of points and therefore the best captaincy option most weeks.

Will PVA score enough goals in the opening rounds to justify 1.5m over Wan-Bissaka?

Will Tosun and Zaha definitely outscore Wood and Austin, for example? (The latter pair's goals/minute are incredible if they can get consistent time on the pitch).

Is your expensive goalkeeper really that much better than a rotating cheap combo that will rack up more save points and bonus points?

There's always somewhere to maximise value, but I think you identify those spots after you've picked the fairly obvious most consistent and most explosive player in the game to be your captain 80% of the time, not before.

For example, if Saah has another score like that blank GW last season, and everyone captains him for 50+ points, will your 'balance' and 'Liverpool coverage' mean anything? No, but your season will just about be over before it starts. If Salah gets injured or goes off the boil, now then we've got an exciting challenge on our hands.

Surprisingly Salah wasn't ridiculously explosive like you'd imagine he'd have been, just remarkably consistent. The Watford game was a one off. So it depends what do you want from your captain, consistency or explosiveness?

Also If and when Salah gets injured or doesn't live up to his pricetag and you decide to sell him many others are going to do the same so the opportunity isn't really that exciting and I bet it will be really obvious who you will sell him for (De Bruyne).

Plus if you want a chance of winning you need to play risky, even at the start of the season, a few gameweeks isn't that long but it still matters a lot. You need to be ahead of the curve/template instead of just ambling behind.

I take your point. But I have a different view of explosive perhaps. I don't think a hat-trick is the only way to have an explosive performance. How many times a season do they really happen? Kane x 2? Aguero x 2? Goals from a midfielder as captain is pure gold, and Salah scores a lot of them. That's explosive.

Do you even remember how many double-digit hauls Salah had? Not explosive lol. He was both consistent and explosive.

It's subjective anyway. I wouldn't consider just a double-digit haul to be explosive, depends how much. He had two double digit scores of 16 or over, and just the one game where he managed over two of either a goal or assist in a game.

If your definition of explosive is 16 or over, then it's a pointless term.

It happens only a few times a season for any player and their value isn't determined by that. For a captain, a double digit return is a success, and that's all that matters.

Really good post this. And there is still the fact that so many premium players will be late back from WC duty so with a smaller pool of talent to chose from its hard to ignore Salah.

Thanks. Yes exactly, we're actually quite limited to start off. I'm not going with any Chelsea, Spurs or Arsenal until a few weeks in. LIV have 4 plum fixtures to start off, Salah will play, and if after that you're not convinced he's worth the money, well it's going to be very easy to spread those funds. Save up 2FT, do a mini wildcard for a -4 and you will instantly have all that balance and depth you crave. But why gamble to start when there are not actually that many premium attackers who are nailed or even likely to start GW1?

I’m going against the flow of this forum this year with no Salah and my own differentials. Last year week after week everyone on here was wrong with their “certain” predictions. Alot of useless knowitalls who don’t actually know anything.

But if you captained Salah every week you couldn't possibly have been 'wrong' over the course of the season.

I did captain Salah most weeks last year. He was the only player I had since GW1. That wasn’t what I meant... Usually when I posted about transfers I was intending on making.. people here gave completely the wrong advice in hindsight.. some were actually abusing and laughing at me for even contemplating some decisions. Those decisions I didn’t take ended up being far more point profitable than the what was recommended and the actions I took.

Moral of the story.. go with your gut because most people on this forum haven’t a clue about anything and are just keyboard bashers. Probably never been to an actual game in their lives.

Fair enough. I agree to be honest, I don't really understand the point of a RMT or 'X or X player?'. I always just go with my gut and make decisions based on a lot of specific factors to my team, future transfer plans, ideas about which fixtures could have a potentially explosive option, etc. The way I see it, you gather a variety of opinions here and there but in the end, you know just as much as the next person so do what you think will work.

Best example I can think of for me last season was bringing in Kane in GW4 vs Everton on the back of no goals. I just did it because my gut said he's going to break this drought and grab a haul, he's Kane, I don't care that he's not 'in form'. So started without him, got his first haul (as captain), and never looked back in my mini league, rivals never caught me from that GW.

The ones who bluntly say "No Salah, no good" are people owning him purely out of fear. Which is why they have no arguments or reasoning. And they try to bring down people who aren't afraid of not owning him.

Totally. I've experimented with a no Salah team, I'm open to the idea. But I can't make a no Salah draft where I'm unable to identify where I can find the funds to upgrade one of my mids to him.

For example, anyone who has Firmino but no Salah. Okay, well I would immediately do Firmino > Wood, who has a superb goal-scoring record (and 20 bonus points in half a season! When he scores a goal, you're looking at 9 points).

Firmino is overrated imo. For 9.5m I want a player who might score 200+ points, but he's around that 180 mark. He's actually less potent that Alli, but more fashionable.

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 9 Years

I don't think he's overrated, I just think he's streaky. Yes, I don't see him getting over 200 points either. He's a player you just need to get at the right time. He can return for 3-4 games straight, but he can also blank 5 games straight. I don't think I'm starting the season with him because I just don't trust him.

Mate if you're expecting 200+ for a 9.5m player, think about Kane. He's 3m more and got just 217 points, that's 12 points lesser than Sterling (despite having played 490 minutes MORE), and 86 points lesser than Salah (despite having played 169 minutes more).

No one is picking Quaner for his goal output. It's literally impossible to have a cheaper striker than him and if you're going for a few premium defenders etc. then two up front with a 4.5 looks okay this year.

(Caveat this with saying I'm taking a 4.5 but probably just a low ownership one hoping they don't drop).

Hey DZ. Following on from a post about 5-6 way player rotation (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/07/17/best-liverpool-players-to-sign-on-fpl-in-2018-19-complete-members-analysis/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_18375632), I thought I'd fiddle around to improve it by reducing the cost of the 6 players by 0.5 in total (and thereby improving the rest of the team. I did this by upgrading Coleman to another premium and giving his rotation spot to a midfielder, Wilshere instead.

Assuming Wan-Bissaka is nailed (he's not yet I know), this rotation allows all 4.0-5.5 players to avoid all top-6 opposition, and the option for both 6.0 players to also avoid the top-6, excluding Robertson (che) in GW7.

The team may change before that point, but it's a good idea to be prepared in case you have most of your cheaper players still intact. It also gives you a strong first sub every week (expect GW7).

Another advantage is that can squeeze more money into attack (e.g. Salah+Aguero+Aubameyang), because you have more budget players than you might want if they didn't rotate. It also frees up more FTs for changes in these more expensive areas, since your bench is deep and your cheaper players are protected more from poor fixtures.

What do you think of the rotation? Feel free to comment on the pros and cons of the team in general 🙂

    Schmeichel 4.0
    Robertson Mendy PVA* Cedric* Wan-Bissaka*
    Salah Martial Deulofeu* Hughes* Wilshere*
    Aubameyang Aguero Zaha

**GW1 bench: Mendy (ars), Wan-B (ful), Wishere
GW1 play: Cedric (BUR), PVA (ful), Deulofeu, Hughes (BHA)

GW2 bench: Hughes (bur), PVA, Wan-B (LIV)
GW2 play: Wilshire (BOU), Deulofeu (bur), Cedric (eve)

GW3 bench: Cedric (LEI), Wilshere (ars), Wan-B (wat)

GW4 bench: Wan-B (SOU), Deulofeu, Hughes (TOT)
GW4 play: Wilshire (WLV), Cedric (cpl), PVA (SOU)

**GW5 bench: Robertson (tot), Deulofeu, Hughes (MUN)
GW5 play: Wilshire (eve), PVA (hud), Cedric (BRI), Wan-B (hud)

GW6 bench: Wan-B (NEW), Wilshire (CHE), Cedric (liv)
GW6 play: Deulofeu, Hughes (ful), PVA (NEW)

**GW8 bench: Mendy (liv), Robertson (MCI), Wan-B (WLV)
GW8 play: Deulofeu, Hughes (BOU), PVA (WLV), Cedric (NEW), Wilshire (bri)

I don’t rate the *players. They will score randomly. I don’t think you need Salah, Kun & Auba. Downgrade one of them and spread the funds so that you can avoid this mess before you’re in it. Overthinking at its best. I still like you, though 😉

You can still downgrad Kun or Auba in this system. That would allow you to upgrade Zaha, Martial and/or Schmeichel, so I don't see that as strong argument against the "rotation".

If you don't rate the * players, then this IS a strong argument against the rotation. However, they are popular options (barring Wilshere), so some people like them, me included. Many are planning to play Deulofeu or Hughes (or another 5.0-5.5 midfielder; and/or a 4.5-5.0 defender) every single week. In this system I play a Watford player approximately the same number of games on average by playing 2 of them in good fixtures, and benching 2 of them in poor fixtures. Others will play both good and poor. I think that's one of the advantages.

But as you/I say, you have to like the players, otherwise it's bogus.

That’s the main issue really. Form over fixtures imo. The players in this rotation might (can’t stress this enough, might) get some form, in that case you should want to play them regardless of fixture. 6/15 players just there for the purpose of fixtures and rotation. I think you should try to get a couple of more steady point earners that doesn’t leave your squad from week to week.

They aren't there just for the purpose of fixtures and rotation though. We just established that I, and many others, think these players are great value. If I were going puely for rotation, I wouldn't have double Watford 😉

I can't really stress enough how similar this is to a normal RMT team. One double transfer and you can get basically anyone you want. But it seems to make sense to set up for GW one with a long-term strategy. I've picked players I think are the best value at their price as well as towards the top of the overall value table in my head, so I'm hoping it'll work well in the short-term too 🙂

After the debate about owning Salah with both Aguero and Abuameyang on the other page which, I'm sure you remember (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/07/21/jota-a-viable-out-of-position-fpl-option/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_18392234), I decided to slot Aguero back in alongside Auba in my team in the simplest possible way, which was to say Madisson for a 5.0 option, so just I checked the FDRs for players who had a decent 4, 5 and 7, which are fixtures ingrained in my head since I picked Deulofeu on the day of the game launch 😀

The team you've posted above is pretty sinilar to my current draft.

Currently got Pickford/Stek in, but that obviously turns to Schmeichel if he goes to Chelsea

4/5 defenders in agreement, I have Douglas in over Cedric

I've not got Zaha in, I've got a fodder forward and a beefier midfield w/ Salah

I think the point people can easily miss (here and in previous discussions) is that these players are much the same as everyone else's, just organised differently. All those asterisks look bad, but in reality, you could say the base team looks like this:

            Schmeichel
            Robertson Mendy PVA Cedric
            Salah Martial Deulofeu
            Aubameyang Aguero Zaha

            4.0 | Hughes, Wilshere, Wan-Bissaka

People have teams with almost identical players or identical team structure (in terms of districbution of prices) and no one bats an eyelid.

If the problem is with the strong frontline, we could simply switch it to make it more agreeable:

            Schmeichel
            Robertson Mendy PVA Cedric
            Salah Mahrez Deulofeu
            Aubameyang Firmino Zaha

            4.0 | Hughes, Wilshere, Wan-Bissaka

The rotation stays the same and you can fill in the rest. Or you can choose different players for your own rotation so you don't have "double Watford" and Wilshere. I'm struggling to understand the criticism of it tbh, though I'd like to understand it 😀 Just because they rotate it means I'm relying on them more than others?? Quite to the contrary imo! Perhaps I should have just presented the team like this 😀

Anyway, I'm glad to hear our drafts are similar. It confirms to me that my rotation thoughts don't completely mess everything up!

Good effort, but things never work out so peachy for me. One of them I'll have to/want to transfer out, and it won't be for a like-for-like replacement at the same club.

If planning to rotate, rotating keepers are nice to have imo. All it takes is flu or late injury and then you are either down to 10 men or perhaps forced to take a hit.

Sure, that's perfectly viable 🙂 With this team I can just have two 4.5 GKs instead. Schmeichel might be too much for me to ignore if he goes to Chelsea though...

And GW5, would you really bench Robertson and play W-B? I can easily imagine LIV winning 0-1 with Robbo assist and HUD scoring home. Not extremely likely, but possible though.

          See the asterisks.

That kind of thing I would judge closer to the time. It's not out of the question that I would sell Robbo before a few tricky fixtures for one of the Arseanl or Chelsea boys, for example. It's all hypothetical at this point 🙂

I don't know about you Deulo but I won't be confident with a team that got Martial (rotation risk and looks rusty), Deulofeu (6g in 69a), Hughes (A good pick; won't play him regularly tho) and Wilshere (no need to explain) in midfield. Also, Cedric is a bad pick cause Southampton are in shambles (expecting a max of 6CS this season).

      Rest looks great imo

      1. Deulofail

Martial is the one player I would EXPECT to sell after a couple of GWs. If he does well enough, he could stay, but unlikely I think.

As for the other players, you seem to be forgetting that all of those players will be on the bench for me quite regularly, so I only play them in good fixtures for optimal value. It's only a little different to most RMTs but aims to actually utilise bench options rather than pick them in isolation or only in a 2 way rotation. That way the money spend on the bench actually contributes to your FPL points total.

The players you mention are all popular picks (besides Wilshere), so I guess your argument is more against these players than the rotation, because the rotation actually allows them to play less than other people on here are planning to play them 🙂

        1. Zilla

          Fair enough on Martial.

Uhm yeah you are correct, I am against the players but therefore I am also against the rotation because what's the point of rotating bad players? I believe that there is good value in midfield.

They're popular picks in different formations or systems, won't work in yours imo.. I mean how many points do you expect from all of Deulo & Wilshere & Hughes in those 8GWs. I even think that having two 4.5ers and not playing them and then getting a 6.5 player instead of Deulo would bring more points.

          Good luck mate.

Fair enough, thanks for the feedback. I personally think Deu could perform at the level of a 6.5+ midfielder in good fixtures. I guess that's the main difference in opinion about the strategy

Honestly I'm not a fan but fair play if you try it.

To me it looks like expensive players are being benched more than you having more money for big hitters.

      1. Deulofail
        • 9 Years

Expensive players like who? You don't have to bench Robbo and Mendy, it's just an option. At which point it's just a case of benching PVA against Liverpool and Deulofeu against Spurs, United and Arsenal.

Would you rather play them in those fixtures, and have, say Hughes, 4.5 and Wan-B on your bench rather than Hughes, Wilshere and Wan-B?

It would be interesting to know the average spend on the bench, but judging by RMTs here, the average seems to be at least the same as my 5.0, 5.0, 4.0 (14, here), and most of those bench players will never see the XI except in an emergency. I saw one yesterday that spent 16m on the bench.

I genuinely hope you do it and it works and it can become a thing it just seems like you'll be disappointed benching the wrong people ha!

I'd say in a 343 or 352 the bench will be mainly 4.5 4.5 4.5 or even replace one with a 4. There for giving you .5 or 1 mil more to spend.

People are sleeping on Lacazette. 9.5m, a goal every 157 mins in his first season in the PL where he was far from his best.

When you compare him to Firmino who is priced the same and is in most teams, Lacazette comes out on top for:

    Mins per goal
    Mins per chance
    Big chances

Despite playing 500 odd minutes less, Lacazette only had 2 fewer touches in the box and was only outscored by 1 goal, 14-15.

I think under Unai, he'll play uptop with Auba coming in from the left. Fully expect 18-20 goals from him, which is all you can expect for a striker at that price. Like a Vardy but with bonus and assist points potential.

Good argument, I suppose it was Wenger who didn’t have faith in him and always subbed him. Interesting to see if they sign a striker as I can’t think who their backup is if they start laca and auba

I just feel that Firmino has an easier start than Lacazette. Im also not sure how Emery will go with his line up at the start. I know what I'm getting with Firmino for now, i think.

That's just a random comparison you're making there. It's very unlikely he'll get explosive returns in the first 2, whereas Firmino (same price) can. Arsenal are notorious for being poor against big sides.

Having a player based on high ownership is so strange in a game in which you need to get more points than the others... Might be scary going Laca over Firmo, but who cares whether you're OR 10.000 or 40.000? Aren't you trying to win it (or be in top-100)?!?!?

Biggest problem, is you have 3 striker spots. Arguably only 2 spots, because one needs to be a dud to fund the rest of your squad.

Coverage can be used to justify picking players from more teams as well as more players from the same team. It's utterly useless rationale imo.

You already take into account the team the player plays for when you are assessing the value of a player individually - it's hard not to.

    £0.5m cheaper than DDG.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is still keen on Leicester defender Harry Maguire and could offer £65m for the 25-year-old England international - but would first need to get rid of Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly or Chris Smalling. (Mail)

            Disagree

            Suppose I have Salah.

You're saying I shouldn't "waste" my money on any other captain rivals

I then pack my team with a load of 7/8/9m hopefuls...loads of Zahas and Arnautovics...no thanks!

There's an awful lot of value in defence and cheap 6.5m mids this year allowing you to spend big in other areas.

Zaha and Arnie are 7m. In the 9m bracket, you have Mahrez, Sane, Mane, Firmino, Lacazette, Eriksen to name a few.

A player above 11m is poor value when not captained. One of Aguero or Auba along with Salah is fine because for some fixtures, Salah won't be the best captain and you'll need to captain the other one. But having all 3 is poor value.

Not sure about this. I get the general principle on spending big on only one player, but it's context-dependent.

First, you may only want Salah for the first 2-4 GWs, at which point his fixtures turn and you can find viable captaincy opteions elsewhere. He's much less likely to be worth 13m at that point, even with captaincy, especially as rotation might begin to affect the Liverpool team with all their depth. If you sell Salah, you don't necessarily have to buy a captain, since you would already have one of two in Auba and Aguero. This point actually works if you apply it to Auba or Aguero too, you might simply be happy to downgrade them for the funds after 2-4 GWs, but use them as the closest we have to sure-fire bets to begin the season (especially Aguero).

Second, avoiding expensive players makes the most sense when you can't find good enough value players to fill the voids left in your team. It wouldn't make sense, for example, if we had a 200m budget, nor if players like Cedric were 2.0m. So there's contexts in which having 22m in 2 non-captains would be foolish and contexts in which it would be less foolish (if it's even foolish at all). As it stands, I believe there're much better options from 4.5-7.5 across all positions this season compared to last. If you think there are 5.0 players who are insane value (hypothetically), then there's nothing wrong with filling your team with these players along with a captain and two 22m non-captain.

      1. Cok3y5murf
        • 9 Years

Based on last season, there's no need to sell Salah after GW4. He scored almost every game last season and was fixture proof. He's facing Chelsea, Spurs and City after GW4 and he scored against all of them last season. Also, if he does do well in the first 4 games, his price would've risen at which point you're leaning towards keeping him. If he doesn't do well, you'll want to sell him anyway.

I do agree with your second point, but I really don't see these exceptional value players to build the team around if I owned Salah, Aguero and Auba. I like the team better with just 2 of them.

If you see Aubameyang (or anyone else) as likely to compete with Salah, there is every reason to sell Salah. In fact that logic is backed up by the FPL Virgin's logic about spending 11m+ on a non-captain. This season will be different from last season afterall.

Wing backs has sort of died slightly (I wouldn't put that high in my priority list!)

Last pre-season it was all about Alonso, Kolasinac... neither nailed now, and both probably in a back four not as attacking wingbacks!

I'd say don't take risks early with maverick picks would be on my list.

The reason Aguero is not great choice because of rotation issues. Auba on the other hand, have 2 hard early fixture. Both Explosive though

This is by far my biggest headache, can't decide.

As @BenCrellin pointed out on Twitter, MCI have the best run of 6 fixtures of any team all season from GW2-7. With such uncertainty in midfield Aguero seems like a solid pick, with minimal rotation risk compared to the likes of Mahrez and Sane, and likely to come off the bench and score even when Jesus starts.

On the other hand, Arsenal have less players out from the WC and Auba/Laca have been having a strong pre-season. They are both more nailed than Ramsey/Mkhi, I see Arsenal beating a weaker City lineup first week, and their fixtures GW2-8 are almost as good as City's.

Auba seems slightly more appealing on paper with less rotation, but I'll be kicking myself when I don't start with Aguero and he runs riot...

This is the exact question which I keep coming back to. Genuinely think that it will come down to tossing a coin - both have the potential to score 25+ goals this season and should be playing in decent attacking sides. Also, both will surely be nailed for the first 4-5 GWs.

Currently on Auba, but the fact they are both the same price makes a quick switch based on GW1 success very easy, which makes the decision slightly less daunting.

    Ignoring captaincy:

    A) Aguero + Martial

    Possible single transfers around GW3:
    (1) Aguero > Lukaku/Lacazette
    (2) Martial > Arsenal/Chelsea mids

    B) Firmino + Mahrez

    Possible single transfers around GW3:
    (1) Firmino > Lacazette
    (2) Mahrez > Pogba/Arsenal/Chelsea mids

The way I see it, A is less likely to waste money ITB because B2 would be a drop of 1-2m. So the question is, is B better than A to the extent that the wasted money is worth it?

In other words, if the decision is tight, I think it's best to go for A. Would you agree, and which would you go for?

For all you know, Kane will score two hattricks and all this will be moot anyway 😉 money itb could be useful in a case like that

I really don't expect to buy Kane even in the event of a hattrick. He would have to impress me with underlying stats and the eye test, but with Salah, but even then an upgrade from Auba as he's about to go on an excellent fixture run seems unlikely unless he looks poop or he's injured.

I went the first 10GWs ish with Kane last season and then went the rest of the season without (barring maybe 1 GW), and I much preferred the latter half haha. Getting Kane would more liekly coincide with selling Salah, but even then, it would be an unlikely case from my current perspective 🙂

It's an issue because, if you imagine I had Ramsey from the start, the question would be:

        A) Aguero
        B) Firmino (1.5 ITB)

I think most would say A in this case.

          Or

          A) Aguero
          B) Firmino (2.0 ITB)

Even more likely to be A. Or

          A) Aguero + Mkhitaryan (Martial for the first 2 GWs)
          B) Firmino + Mkhitaryan (Mahrez for the first 2 GWs, then 2.0 ITB)

Perhaps more even, but more likely A than my original post?

Well I can tell you this: there are no other players in my side that I can see myself using the 1-2m on unless they are injured or dropped. So I would end up being patiet with the money ITB unless it was an emergency.

In that case Aguero is better than Firmino, and perhaps in the original question of Kun/Martial or Firmo/Mahrez I'd say Kun/Martial edges it because it's just for the first 2 GWs (or so) and then you'd ship Martial when he'd become a rotation risk....

Yeah wait one week or 2 with money ITB. It may not seem sustantial, but I think it should form part of my decision rather than tossing a coin 🙂

Since I'm setting up my team with the hope to WC late, I don't intent to jump on every bandwagon. FTs will mostly be for injuries and terrible form (actual form, not 2pt returns). So I'll look to save transfers every week that I can.

Otherwise you're gonna lose a lot of points. No Aguero, Auba, Firmino, Lacazette, Kane, Lukaku etc?

I do too, but I'd probably make use of that with Daniels or Tomkins/Wann Bissaka and probably one of King/Zaha.

Just don't think you're going to get the consistent attacking returns you'd want with so many mid priced options that could be a bit streaky (Siggy,Deulofeu,King, Zaha). It's one thing going for fixtures, but just look at the consistent returns of an Aubameyang from the end of last year...

King scored 16 two years ago.

The first couple weeks are a crapshoot on who is actually going to perform. I tend toward fixtures as form is not very applicable from the preseason. Once someone shows form, I can make a move.

That is true, but he has just 21 league goals in the rest of his career and that's including time out the top flight. I think while the first couple of weeks are a crapshoot on who is going to perform, you minimise the risk by picking the world class players where you can. Surely hard to bet against Aubameyang or Aguero getting 20 league goals? The latter has done it in six league seasons and the former got 10 in 14 and the other has been better than 1 in 2 for years. Going two mid price also makes it slightly harder to jump to the in form premium?

I like the tem, but a minimum of 16.0 on the bench (outfield players) each week is joint top of the RMTs that I've noticed on here. You've actually not picked that many big risks, so I'd definitely reduce that amount, personally, even if it's just to sit in your bank.

Because there's no way Shaw's nailing down a spot ahead of Young. Why get a player that's a guaranteed use of a FT? Not wise to pre-plan transfers already when you'll likely need them for something else early on.

At least Martial has a slim chance of nailing down a spot, but there are still better nailed options you can have in midfield.

He's good for at least the first two GWs I think. After that I should have 2 FTs. Wouldn't hesitate to make 3 transfers for a hit in GW3. If United start with two clean sheets Shaw's price will skyrocket and he's capable of attacking returns and bonus as well.

            1. Cok3y5murf
              • 9 Years
              7 years, 4 months ago

Maybe you'll have 2 FTs, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll need them for something else. I just don't see why you need to pre-plan transfers when you can pick nailed players. That's up to you though. I personally treat transfers preciously and also don't take hits unless really necessary. Only took 4 last season.

Seeing so many template teams on here full of unplayable bench fodder. Surely the whole idea of a 15 man squad is to have players who you can call upon when short term injuries occur or rotation hits. Even more worrying when people have city players and World Cup semi finalists in their team. Madness!

    1. I Member
      • 10 Years

I think it's less important at the start of the season because you have the Wildcard in your back pocket. Long term I agree I wouldn't want non-players on my bench.

Easy enough to say without any team to back it up. 14 players with 87m is not straightforward without a few compromises.

There are many ways to skin a cat. I don't disagree with your point at all. A squad of 15 with no bench fodder could be viable.

But you could alternatively pick 11 quality, expensive players. They're more likely to score points, and less prone to rotation. The 4.0 bench fodders will come in only if absolutely necessary, take their 2 points or if you're lucky 6 points. Or just make transfers and take a hit now and then.

Still need to take a hit.

In addition to the fact that you're now gonna get rid of either Auba or Kun once their fixtures improve?

Doesn't have to mean taking a hit.

Even it means taking a hit, one hit is -4 points compared to playing wildcard

City are again looking very strong this year, but it's always difficult to perform as well as they did last season twice in a row. Liverpool, they're getting more and more solid defensively and the attack is no problem as we all know. Potential injury issues aside I think Liverpool are going for it this season.

Wouldn't agree to start with double triples from GW1, because I like coverage for potential fails, but it could prove to be the tactic later on. It's going to be difficult to fit them all in though. City's nailed players are expensive and if for example Arsenal does well this season, their aspects are going to be difficult to ignore.

I would be very hesitant to go without three from each... expect them to comfortably be the top 2, top goalscorers and probably best defences... very neatly lines up for a def from each & 2 attackers from each.

It really depends on these 2 signings. They were proven quality in their former leagues, but we'll see if they can show they're not as mediocre as other central midfielders at Liverpool. Even with the ones they got they reached the Champions League final, so a couple of improvements and they're ready to challenge. Don't forget Shaqiri is only 26 and could improve them greatly if he reaches his Bayern potential under Klopp.

Don’t think so on Young as Shaw will likely start the season and despite what people say I think he’ll win the left back slot. Ashley Young is a terrible left back, I still can’t believe utd started him last year... England I can kind of see through as they are a shambles with right backs at centrehalf etc... but Utd should have a lot better, and Shaw is a much better left back than young.

Martial definitely worth getting from GW1 imo though!

Strongly doubt it. That's definitely putting too much emphasis on shirt numbers! If ever 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' was applicable, I would say it was for Liverpool's attacking play.

Shaqiri I reckon will be off the bench and rotated in.

Like the balance. Maybe Mhki to Ramsey and use that 0.5 on one of the cheapies? Or could downgrade Bailly too and have a bit more.

I found that I trapped myself with too much money at the back last season, I'm trying to avoid this time

Thanks - that's something I'm certainly considering. Bailly was Coleman until recently, and without much prospect of attacking returns from Bailly, one option would be to downgrade.

That 3rd midfield spot is troublesome: Mhiki, Ramsey, Siggy, Jota all real possibilities....
