Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

Do you think KDB & Aguero are the safest double up in City attack? By safe, I mean the lowest risk of being rotated

KDB is safe . started 36 out of 38 last season .
      Aguero not sure.

De bruyne is integral to how city play, he's as safe as they come at city.

History tells us aguero will share game time with Jesus.

    Mkhi or Ramsey

Regardless of the 0.5, who do you think is the better option?

Mkhi and Auba we've seen what they can do. Ramsey goal threat maybe a goal every once in a while but mkhi will rack up on assists

If you can’t afford both who would you rather have out of

    Salah or Aguero

    Any ideas would be welcomed

I've got an idea that's way out there...
How do you rate the chances of the following 4.0's getting regular playing time?
    - Wan-Bissaka
    - Bennet (wolves)
    - Peltier

If chances are okay that they might Get a place in their teams, is it then worth punting on all 3 hoping one comes good?
    3 different outcomes:
    A) none comes good and you might have lost a spot in your XI, loosing 5-15pts on most managers the first 2 gws, but might Get more pts elsewhere due to stronger squad.
    B) one comes good and at the very least you Get appearencepts mitigating the loss from those who have better defenders + perks from A.
    C) more than one comes good, youve got rotationoptions, and 2-3 very valuable assets in the pricechanges + benefits from A.

A squad could look something like this
    Bego boruc
    Bellerin robbo Wan Peltier Bennet
    Eriksen, Salah, Siggy, 2x4.5's
    Auba, Kun, Wood

Happy for anyone to share their thoughts, especially about the likelyhood (%) of the 4.0's starting. Just a thought experiment.

Think risking all three slots i defence is to much of a gamble though

      Ederson
      Cedric, Bailly, Wan Bissaka
      Jota, Salah, Mane, Sanchez, Richarlison
      Zaha, Auba

      4.0 - Peltier, Bennett, 4.5

Yup I'm going with that exact strategy.

Or just wait for one to come good and transfer them in?

At this time of year there are usually a few options. By the time the transfer window closes, only one or two.

Usually those remaining options start - and then ultimately lose their places, by which time they have dropped to 3.9m and are awkward to transfer out.

      1. WesMantooth
        • 15 Years

        Yup!

But that Kind of beats the promise of the thoughts driving this idea.

Which two nailed 4.5 mids would you get? Is there any? Because otherwise, you might even won't get 11 on the pitch.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years

Probably Chalobah, Stephens and Gunnarsson, though I know nothing about Cardiff, myself

    5. @FPL_Chess
      7 years, 11 months ago

I thought of doing that, about 20 drafts ago - but wandered off the idea. You've just made me revisit it and I now find it will allow me a 9.5 midfielder. Nice one. I think! It goes against the grain, but sort of makes sense...

      1. WesMantooth
        • 15 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

Its definately a gamble. Especially if unforeseen things happen. Which in FPL, is often the case. But playoffs might be good.

    6. Kante FC
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 11 months ago

Like your thinking! I'm going for a similar but less extreme strategy:

      Ryan, Lossl
      Cedric, Daniels, Doherty, Peltier, Wan-Bissaka
      Salah, Mkhitaryan, Cairney, Ralls, Neves
      Kane, Aguero, Aubameyang

Aim is to try to get 15 starters. Can always swap between 4.0 defenders if the one's I picked don't work out. 0 value in 4.5 midfielders this year so I'd try to find money to get a pair of 5.0's if I were you.

Ye keeping an eye on him, was gonna put up a separate post asking about him
Think he could do well this season as Mahrez has gone seems like Gray could take his spot and he has ability for 5.5

Gray doesn't have the skillset Marhez has. Maddison is more likely to take his spot. Gray is the pacy winger

    Thoughts on this draft?

Shuffling between mane/eriksen + zaha or firmino + mkhi

    Ederson hamer
    Robertson bailly tomkins diop peltier
    Salah mane mahrez ralls mcdonald
    Aguero arnautovic zaha

Personally the first combo is better - Mane and zaha (if he doesn’t leave)
Firmino May be slow to start and Arsenal’s first two fixtures are nasty

Rose, Trippier, Alder, Vert, Dier, Son, Kane all likely slow to return from World Cup.

Defensively may be week, so I'm staying away from Davies. Eriksen is in my team as he's the focus of the offense

Palace finished strongly under Roy. Though it looks like they won't retain RLC and he was a big part of it.
Good team though, top half of the table for sure.

My guy says Wolves too. Rafa could also improve Newcastle - he's done incredible for them so far.

Big spenders West Ham and Everton have good managers so should be up there behind the top 6.

Cheers, been on a 433 with Firmino instead of Mane until now, wich one would you go for if signs of Bobby starting gw1?

      Yeah - looks great.

Very similar to mine, although I'm probably going Auba from the start.

Bench is stretched a bit thin though - Ramsey to Mhiki to bolster it a bit?

Yeah actually been on Micky until now, Kamara-Sørloth or Chalobah-5.0 looks better.

I'm currently on Sorloth and Chalobah - but would love to squeeze Costa/Hughes in there.

Main difference is I have Douglas and Arnie not Bailly and Wood - but may need to reassess that due to a Douglas' lack of pre-season so far.

An alternative strategy is to upgrade Wan-Bissaka to Bailly/Coleman, and have Costa and Hughes as a rotating 4th midfielder instead of Mhiki.

I also want to get Richarlison if he moves to Everton.

Kolasinac at 5.0 straight in my team if he look like starting.

Thoughts on the prospects of demarai Gray? Now Mahrez has gone he could nail down a spot at Leicester for just 5.5

Finally almost happy with my team for now. Just have a couple decisions to make. How is everyone else getting along?
