We are delighted to announce Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard‘ has now been released.

Written by regular site contributor David Wardale and fully endorsed by Fantasy Football Scout, it should help you plug the painful gap between the end of the World Cup and start of the 2018/19 Premier League season, which is not far away now.

Subtitled ‘The Method and Madness of Fantasy Football’, the book is being published by Penguin’s respected sports imprint, Yellow Jersey Press, and is packed with hints and tips from some of the best Fantasy managers out there.

But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair, mini-league skulduggery and humiliating failure and the strange grip the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in particular has on managers from Australia to Zimbabwe and just about everywhere in between.

There are in-depth interviews with FPL champions and Fantasy-mad Saudi princes, a comprehensive look at the eternal conflict that is stats versus ‘the eye test’ and chapters on the history of the game, the all-conquering beast that is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and what the future of Fantasy Football might look like.

There’s also a revealing section on our very own Mark Sutherns, detailing the methods behind his successful approach to playing FPL.

Written by a fan for the fans, we think Wasting Your Wildcard will inform and entertain in equal measure, while grappling with the reasons behind why we, as supposedly grown-up men and women, cannot resist playing a game of footballing dress-up.

Order ‘Wasting Your Wildcard’ with Waterstones HERE.

Australian fans can order through Booktopia.

Does anyone think sakho might be a better shout than PVA? .5 less and he hoovered up 18 BPs in less than half a season last year which is pretty crazy!

He scored last year and from memory carries a bit of a goal threat

I'm not sure about better than PVA, but very possibly better than all the other 5.0's and 4.5 defenders.

Personally only planning to have Wan Bissako from Palace in my defence and that's only because he's 4.0 and looks like he'll play 1st choice RB. Palace concede so many that it undermines any attacking/BP points they might get in my opinion.

For 5.5 I'm much more interested in Coleman, Bailly, Shaw, Ward etc.

Ive got Sakho in my team, Palace fixtures should bring some CS and Sakho should get the BAPS, very capable of bag a goal at a corner as well.

We wouldn't have been promoted without him and clearly works wonders in our system.

Think he'll comfortably be a 12+ goal striker if he signs for us.

I hope you are right because I like Fulham but I remember how poor he was in the Prem and your squad looks paper thin. Schurrle is a great start but I fear you are running out of time to build a team that can stay up.

7m midfielder suggestions? Or any other, can put more into defence instead or maybe spending on a new Striker instead of Bobby Reid (I think he is the new Callum Wilson this season, hoping his cruciates remain intact though)

    Have David Silva/Jota/Richarlison/Salah

Not with Malcolm going to Barca.

Possibly Lamela. Alli back late and Son off to Asia games. Competing with Lucas though.

Whoever wins position out of Fabregas and Barkley also. Although both could start if Kante doesn't start the season.

I prefer Cairney or Ralls at 5.0 as they get forward a bit more and there are more options at 5.5 such as Deulofeu. It's a tough market there so maybe just get in a 4.5 and use a million to upgrade elsewhere?

Stephens should play, Ward from Cardiff seems popular but I don't know anything about him, Chalobah could be one to monitor

Everton are one of the other teams who has expressed their interest in Maxime #Gonalons, but Crystal Palace are in the lead for the player.

Looks ok? Bench is weak but that’s how I always set up my team.

    Ederson
    Robbo Bailly Shaw Cedric
    Salah Mahrez Mane
    Aguero Arnie Zaha

    4.0 4.5 4.5 4.0

Bailly will change to coleman or Maguire (if moves to United) if doesn’t look like will start the season first choice.

About half-way through "Wasting Your Wildcard" and so far, although an interesting and witty book, I have been a tad disappointed at the lack of advice and tips so far. I felt too much time has been spent on FPL across the world, and anecdotes from other countries - I feel some of that could have been condensed. However, I see above that the book does go on to include advice from Mark Sutherns - so I look forward to that.

What I did laugh at was some of the forfeits of coming bottom of some mini-leagues, such as having to get from Land's End to John O'Groats...by hitch-hiking only ! Ouch !

Good team. TAA, biwa both worth monitoring so you don't end up with 3 who don't play (including Kamara plus speroni). Solid midfield.

I've got both and presented a rotation argument based on fixture difficulty amounting to 30 FDR points different (subjective i know).

Best argument i can present is, i suspect i'll want both before long and don't fancy the -8 to bring Kane in.

Thank you! I have a team right now containing both of them. What did you do to work around the other positions? I filled midfield out with Groß, Gudmundsson, richarlison and Mooy (bench) and attack with Tosun and Zaha.

The back line has taken most of the hit with Smalling the only over 5.0.

            Pope/Pickford both 5.0
            Ward 5.0, Tomkins 4.5 Smalling 6.0 Doherty 4.5 Peltier 4.0
            Salah, Gudmunsson 6.0, Groß 7.0, Richarlison 6.5 Mooy 5.5
            Kane 12.5, Tosun 7.0, Zaha 7.0

My opinion to save 2.5 for Gudmunsson > 8.5 (Dilva?)

              GK: Take 1.0/1.5ml from GKs by going 4.5 - 4.5 or 4.5 - 4.0
DEF: While i don't love the choices, defence prices are good/fine.
MID: Are you a Burnley fan or something lol? Gross>Jota +0.5, Mooy>Costa/Kenedy +0.5?
ATT: I like but, Tosun & Richy? Tosun > Arnie?

Thanks for the tips!! I now have:

                Pickford 5, Boruc 4
                Def:Ward 5 Tomkins 4.5 Smalling 6 Doherty 4.5 Peltier 4
                Mid: Sal 13 D.Silva 8,5 Jota 6.5 Richarlison 6.5 Costa 5
                Kane 12.5 Tosun 7 Zaha 7

Midfield feels much stronger, and i have 1.0 in the bank to upgrade elsewhere, thanks!

Good player but won't score many FPL points. With him playing alongside Kante that could easily open up Fabregas or Barkley to play more advanced for Chelsea so that's something to monitor.

*Should* be good for bps, but doubt there'll be many assists or goals. Looking at 2.4 points per game (assuming Chelsea keep a CS in 2 out of every 5 games) plus whatever bps he gets from passing completion % and key passes.

So the first two international breaks are after GW4 and GW8 right?

I've never really been one to plan transfers in pre-season, but I feel it's a tad different this season with so many stars likely to be rested due to world cup duty. Is there any harm in transfer planning up to GW8 or so and then considering a wildcard if all goes to pot?

      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I think a WC after GW4 is the way to go. Start with Salah and assess if he still essential after that ahead of difficult fixtures and champions league rotation. Could be a good time to draft back in key world cup players and catch some price rises.

      1. Obi-1 Kenobi-0
        • 11 Years

Yeah, I like this thinking. Currently got Sanchez + Aguero in my team, so thinking after GW2 can bring in Auba (fixtures clear up) and KdB (back from WC duty hopefully!) and then, as you said, decide whether Salah is worth the 13m outlay based on the first four fixtures.

I have a nagging feeling that him and Mané may well score a similar number of goals and assists this season, but not brave enough to bank on it at >50% ownership.

Yeah. If Salah isn't tearing it up and Haz/De Bruyne/Kane are back then it's WC time.
