Mohamed Salah’s already high ownership is on the rise, furthering the case for Fantasy Premier League managers to include him in their squads even if they are uncertain about his new price.

We also saw some big transfer fluctuations in the goalkeeper position in the last seven days while large numbers of managers persist in owning assets unlikely to be involved in Gameweek 1.

Such decisions could allow for an opportunity to make real headway on the majority of rivals in the early part of the season.

GOALKEEPERS

Fantasy managers are already moving fast to replace Nick Pope (£5.0m) in their squads after the Burnley man sustained a shoulder injury at Aberdeen on Thursday night. A week ago he was one of the most popular goalkeepers on 17 percent ownership but recent developments have caused that figure to drop to just 6.8.

Moving in the opposite direction is new Liverpool signing Alisson Becker (£5.5m) who has amassed 9.9 percent backing in his first week as an FPL option.

Julian Speroni (£4.0m) has emerged as the most fashionable goalkeeper in the cheapest bracket with 14.8 percent opting to save some money on him. However, the Argentinian is believed to be third in the Crystal Palace pecking order behind Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m). It’s possible that his popularity increased this week to accommodate an upgrade from Pope to Alisson.

David De Gea (£6.0m), Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) and Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) have remained largely stable as the top three, with 30.1, 23.0 and 21.6 percent ownership respectively.

DEFENDERS

We should expect to see plenty of fluctuation before Gameweek 1 when it comes to defenders, considering that four of the top five most-owned have some form of question mark over them.

Despite still being absent from their respective pre-season training camps, Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m) still hold down the top two spots in this classification.

Charlie Daniels (£4.5m) is the most popular option likely to play in Gameweek 1 with 17.0 percent backing. However, his starting berth will be at risk in Gameweek 4 after new Bournemouth signing Diego Rico (£4.5m) returns from his three-match suspension.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains steady on 16.8 percent ownership and certainly looks more assured of game-time than he did before Chelsea’s first pre-season friendly, in which he started. However, he was replaced by Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) at half-time and Alonso should be considered very much under review considering that Maurizio Sarri prefers to play with traditional full-backs.

Just below Alonso is another Gameweek 1 doubt in Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m). The Liverpool man was once the most fashionable defender in the whole game but following England’s continued progression at the World Cup, he dropped to third last week and now comes in as the fifth-most owned stopper. Although his backing is still fairly sizeable with 16.1 percent invested in him, both Nathaniel Clyne (£5.0m) and Joe Gomez (£5.0m) look likely to threaten Alexander-Arnold’s pitch time.

Despite more doubts hanging over whether he will feature for Huddersfield this season, Scott Malone has actually extended his lead at the top of the £4.0m defender ownership charts. From what we’ve seen so far, the most likely to start from that price point is Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and some Fantasy managers are slowly picking up on that. In the last seven days he has gone from 2.6 percent ownership to 3.9.

MIDFIELDERS

Mohamed Salah’s (£13.0m) return to action has extended his lead as the most popular player ahead of the 2018/19 season. In one week the Egyptian has added a further 2.6 percent of managers to his following. The more his ownership increases the more dangerous it could become to go without last season’s record-breaking top scorer, regardless of his hiked price.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) still sits in second place remaining stable in 27 percent of squads, even though he is still absent from Manchester City’s pre-season training squad and could miss Gameweek 1.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s (£7.0m) price and potential has him as the third-most popular still, although he has experienced a two percent drop-off in the last seven days. He may pick up more backing from Fantasy managers if De Bruyne is confirmed as absent in the build-up for the opening weekend.

Also likely to mop up some De Bruyne sellers on the eve of 2018/19’s first match is his Man City colleague Leroy Sané (£9.5m), who already has one summer pre-season goal under his belt. He sits just behind Mkhitaryan on 18.8 percent ownership.

Deep-lying midfielders Ruben Neves (£5.0m) and N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) are both in the top 10 most-owned in their classification, despite relatively low potential for Fantasy returns. Meanwhile, options in the same price bracket like Aaron Lennon, Kenedy and Helder Costa, all of whom play in more advanced positions, have just 0.5, 3.4 and 1.0 percent ownership respectively.

FORWARDS

Marko Arnautovic’s (£7.0m) recent form has seen him jump back into the top four most-owned among forwards. Seven days ago, the Austrian had been overtaken by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m)’s 24 percent, who has five pre-season goals. Arnautovic has found the net four times in three matches triggering a small rise back to 25 percent ownership.

At the top of the forwards charts, Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) remain stable on 37 and 33 percent respectively. The large number of managers invested in the pair will need to pay close attention to our Scout Notes for the remainder of pre-season to see if either of them will be available for Gameweek 1 following World Cup campaigns.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) is still the third-most popular striker with 31.2 percent ownership, despite his switch from midfield over the summer.

Last season though, the massively owned fodder didn't drop but the less-owned dropped sooner. Seems to take a bigger exodus for well owned players to drop, but who knows - maybe they've changed the algorithm this year

That's wrong actually. The most owned 4.0 last year (think it was Rangel) dropped first out of all the 4.0's, as did some of the biggest 4.5 mids. Like that Southampton mid who's name I've forgotten.

So not been on in awhile. Just catching up on results. A few mid priced midfield picks that are looking decent to begin the season with in my team currently. How does this look?

    Alisson
Aurier, Robertson, Bailly, PVA, Wan Bissaka
    Mané, Mkhitaryan, Sigurdsson, Pedro, Ward
    Aguero, Aubameyang, King

    Thoughts appreciated thanks.

How is this looking? Planning a very early wildcard, once Man City players are back and we have a better idea which of their team is worth investing in.

Just want a team of nailed players to start the season with and get me off to a solid start, not necessarily a spectacular one (although it'd be nice!)

    Fabianski Foster
    Robertson Davies Coleman Tomkins (AWB)
    Salah Mane Eriksen (Cairney Stephens)
    Arnie Lacazette Zaha

Anyone else nailed from week 1 who may be worth a look?

      Looks good.
McCarthy rotates better with Fab in the long term but maybe not an issue if wild carding early.
I wart Robertson but don’t trust him to play every game so have gone VVD.
I would downgrade Mane given you have Salah to allow you to upgrade Cairney/Stephens

I'm not expecting many clean sheets from Southampton, to be honest. I think Gunn could end up as #1 ahead of McCarthy fairly quickly anyway!
The Robertson v VVD debate is a tough one. I really like both. I had Robbo for half of last season though and he was amazing so I feel I need to stay loyal to him! I expect Liverpool to come flying out of the blocks this season. Almost tempted to get rid of Robbo and go with Salah, Mane and Firmino from the off!

I don’t think he’ll be nailed. Emery will probably play a 433 with Laca, Auba, Ozil as his front three. Mkhi to come in as a sub for Laca. Of course, I’m just speculating.

Agree. But depending on how Ramsey's contract situation goes, it may become a 4-2-3-1 with Mkhi coming in on the right side.

    Kinda stuck here:

    A) Aguero + Ozil

    Pros:
    - Great captain option in Aguero, who is a proven PL goalscorer
    - Ozil looks guaranteed to start under Emery
    - Ozil on set pieces, and given the goal scorers Arsenal have, could be an assist machine

    Cons:
    - Will Aguero start? He came back late from the World Cup. 11.0m for a player not certain on starts seem really risky
    - Aguero rotation with Jesus
    - Ozil @ 8.5m: does Ramsey provide better value @ 7.5m?

    B) Laca + Sane

    Pros:
    - both certainly nailed on for a start
    - both rested, didn’t go to the World Cup
    - both played regularly during pre-season

    Cons:
    - No bonafide Captain option amongst these 2
    - Sane prone to rotation risk In due time
    - Will Auba outscore Laca?

    Which option will you choose?

David Luiz not assured of starts, is he? Not sure about Schlupp, but he does bomb forward on occasion.
Wouldn't touch Chelsea midfield apart from Hazard with a 10-foot pole, especially not Barkley.
Having Arnie and Lacazette as subs is a massive waste.

      Rest OK.

Luiz has been starting all preseason matches and does really suit Sarri's style of play, plays quite similarly to a koulibaly in terms of aggressive and bringing the ball out of defence. Barkley is a differential pick, started all preseason too and has been playing outstandingly (he is the player in the chelsea squad who suits that Hamsik role the best). I do agree about the waste, just wary that their first match fixtures are not ideal, so would just swap them in for their next round of matches.

I am expecting to wildcard after the first four matches 🙂

For what it's worth, I current have Luiz and Pedro in my team.

Both have looked very comfortable and assured playing Sarri-ball and represent excellent value for money. Under the radar picks.

If they start the Community Shield, they should be nailed....

Yeah, have dropped a defender and brought him in. I agree Reuser, I think people are neglecting how set in his ways Sarri is. He will basically produce the same Napoli side he had, but the players at his disposal in Chelsea. David Luiz is the closest he will come to finding his Koulibaly.

See above for Luiz and Barkley. Fabinho is most likely on pens for Liverpool and Liverpool get lots of penalties. Sanchez will be playing as United's striker whilst Lukaku gets back from the World Cup, looks great in preseason and United have good early fixtures.

I am wildcarding after the first four matches 🙂

Sarri's Napoli side played down the left at twice the rate to which they played down the right-hand side. Wouldn't surprise me if Alonso is allowed to bomb forward even more this season, as Sarri will probs play Azpi at RB to cover in as a CB when needed (his RB at napoli did that)

      1. A.T
        • 15 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

Yes this is a bit of a daft argument I’ve seen mentioned a few times. I’m going to stick my neck out here and say it had something to do with the personnel available to him at Napoli, rather than some strange left sided bias for no apparent reason!

        1. FantasyFootballFanatic
          • 9 Years
          7 years, 8 months ago

It did have something to do with the personnel, but Sarri is literally trying to mirror that Napoli side in this Chelsea side. He has the personnel to do that here too. A defensively-minded RB in Azpi can drop into CB whilst the marauding Alonso can get forward. He will play Kante at RCM and Pedro at RW to be a hard-working side where Pedro can snatch back post goals, whilst Barkley plays the Hamsik role and Hazard plays like Insigne. The left side was more creative at Napoli and is at Chelsea too!

It's just logical really. If you go against the grain and get it wrong especially with your cap, could be a long climb back. If you go with the herd and cap him and trust your differentials, I feel that's a better strategy. No worse feeling after all the work you've put in if your cap blanks and salah gets a hat trick for the casuals 🙂

If the choice were as simple as Salah or not then you'd be right but that extra 3.5m to get someone like Mane, Sane or B.Silva instead allows you to pick a much better striker (almost enough for Zaha to Aguero/Auba) and then you can use the same logic for the striker. If Aguero bags a hat trick week 1 and you have Salah then you're behind in exact same way those without Salah would be if he gets a few.
It's just if you think the team is more balanced with or without. Lots are prepared to pay for him, I'd rather spend the cash elsewhere but just because he might score lots in the first game isn't a reason to pick him when there's loads of players that will have a good first week

    Best striker option under 7.0?

    A. Stick with Tosun
    B. Arnie
    C. Zaha
    D. King
    E. Wood
    F. Somebody else

Tosun probably most risky but with great fixtures and Marco Silva, think hes the best pick

Take a punt on Sturridge for GW1, otherwise Zaha followed by Arnie

I am currently on Zaha. However I have Richarlison in midfield, that is one of the main reasons I did not pick Tosun. Both Zaha and Tosun have great fixtures and hopefully will score goals

Also why isnt ozil being given more thought. Takes set pieces and on his day, a great fantasy option with those assists. Think there was some article comparing him to Mkhi last season but he hasnt been at his best for a while and Emery could unleash him and we arent sure if Mkhi is 100% nailed

    1. Drop Dead Tsimikas

Because he's been an abject POS for the better part of the last two seasons. Much like Shaw - too much promise, not enough results. Would much rather take a punt on Mkhi.

Performance has been on the decline for the past three seasons.

      2015/16: 15 mins/pt
      2016/17: 17 mins/pt
      2017/18: 19 mins/pt

At this rate, he may have a similar performance (21-22 mins/pt) as Richarlison from last season.

For a Salah team, not bad, and you've also managed to shoehorn Kane into there alongside KDB. I fear you might be a bit ahead of your time, though - this should be a great team two months from now.

      1001th try is approaching...

Maguire unlikely to start due to WC. TAA is a rotation risk. Cedric is unlikely to start. Bellerin for the first two gameweeks looks adverse. Downgrade to Kola and save half-a-mil. Daniels is a poor player with the bench in his future.

Salah, sure. KDB is unlikely to start due to the WC. Mkhi, is a rotation risk.

Historically, Kane doesn't show up for the first month or two of the season, but I enjoy when history does not repeat itself.

        Ederson

Pickford / Patricio (hoping Pickford goes to Chelsea)
    Walker / Daniels / Cedric / Bellerin / Wan-Bissaka
    Sane / Mane / Richarlison / Schürrle / McArthur
    Firmino / Zaha / Kane

Will likely swap Firmino to Sturridge for GW1

At the moment I have Mahrez, mainly because I haven't touched my team in a while.

Not bagging the Sane pick - just the quickfire selling of Mahrez for Sane when neither of their outlooks improved last night.

B, but Neves is quite defensive - there are better options at 5.0 I feel, e.g. Cairney, Ralls.

The following could be interesting in your team:
      Auba out, Firmino in
