Mohamed Salah’s already high ownership is on the rise, furthering the case for Fantasy Premier League managers to include him in their squads even if they are uncertain about his new price.

We also saw some big transfer fluctuations in the goalkeeper position in the last seven days while large numbers of managers persist in owning assets unlikely to be involved in Gameweek 1.

Such decisions could allow for an opportunity to make real headway on the majority of rivals in the early part of the season.

GOALKEEPERS

Fantasy managers are already moving fast to replace Nick Pope (£5.0m) in their squads after the Burnley man sustained a shoulder injury at Aberdeen on Thursday night. A week ago he was one of the most popular goalkeepers on 17 percent ownership but recent developments have caused that figure to drop to just 6.8.

Moving in the opposite direction is new Liverpool signing Alisson Becker (£5.5m) who has amassed 9.9 percent backing in his first week as an FPL option.

Julian Speroni (£4.0m) has emerged as the most fashionable goalkeeper in the cheapest bracket with 14.8 percent opting to save some money on him. However, the Argentinian is believed to be third in the Crystal Palace pecking order behind Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m). It’s possible that his popularity increased this week to accommodate an upgrade from Pope to Alisson.

David De Gea (£6.0m), Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) and Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) have remained largely stable as the top three, with 30.1, 23.0 and 21.6 percent ownership respectively.

DEFENDERS

We should expect to see plenty of fluctuation before Gameweek 1 when it comes to defenders, considering that four of the top five most-owned have some form of question mark over them.

Despite still being absent from their respective pre-season training camps, Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m) still hold down the top two spots in this classification.

Charlie Daniels (£4.5m) is the most popular option likely to play in Gameweek 1 with 17.0 percent backing. However, his starting berth will be at risk in Gameweek 4 after new Bournemouth signing Diego Rico (£4.5m) returns from his three-match suspension.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains steady on 16.8 percent ownership and certainly looks more assured of game-time than he did before Chelsea’s first pre-season friendly, in which he started. However, he was replaced by Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) at half-time and Alonso should be considered very much under review considering that Maurizio Sarri prefers to play with traditional full-backs.

Just below Alonso is another Gameweek 1 doubt in Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m). The Liverpool man was once the most fashionable defender in the whole game but following England’s continued progression at the World Cup, he dropped to third last week and now comes in as the fifth-most owned stopper. Although his backing is still fairly sizeable with 16.1 percent invested in him, both Nathaniel Clyne (£5.0m) and Joe Gomez (£5.0m) look likely to threaten Alexander-Arnold’s pitch time.

Despite more doubts hanging over whether he will feature for Huddersfield this season, Scott Malone has actually extended his lead at the top of the £4.0m defender ownership charts. From what we’ve seen so far, the most likely to start from that price point is Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and some Fantasy managers are slowly picking up on that. In the last seven days he has gone from 2.6 percent ownership to 3.9.

MIDFIELDERS

Mohamed Salah’s (£13.0m) return to action has extended his lead as the most popular player ahead of the 2018/19 season. In one week the Egyptian has added a further 2.6 percent of managers to his following. The more his ownership increases the more dangerous it could become to go without last season’s record-breaking top scorer, regardless of his hiked price.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) still sits in second place remaining stable in 27 percent of squads, even though he is still absent from Manchester City’s pre-season training squad and could miss Gameweek 1.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s (£7.0m) price and potential has him as the third-most popular still, although he has experienced a two percent drop-off in the last seven days. He may pick up more backing from Fantasy managers if De Bruyne is confirmed as absent in the build-up for the opening weekend.

Also likely to mop up some De Bruyne sellers on the eve of 2018/19’s first match is his Man City colleague Leroy Sané (£9.5m), who already has one summer pre-season goal under his belt. He sits just behind Mkhitaryan on 18.8 percent ownership.

Deep-lying midfielders Ruben Neves (£5.0m) and N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) are both in the top 10 most-owned in their classification, despite relatively low potential for Fantasy returns. Meanwhile, options in the same price bracket like Aaron Lennon, Kenedy and Helder Costa, all of whom play in more advanced positions, have just 0.5, 3.4 and 1.0 percent ownership respectively.

FORWARDS

Marko Arnautovic’s (£7.0m) recent form has seen him jump back into the top four most-owned among forwards. Seven days ago, the Austrian had been overtaken by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m)’s 24 percent, who has five pre-season goals. Arnautovic has found the net four times in three matches triggering a small rise back to 25 percent ownership.

At the top of the forwards charts, Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) remain stable on 37 and 33 percent respectively. The large number of managers invested in the pair will need to pay close attention to our Scout Notes for the remainder of pre-season to see if either of them will be available for Gameweek 1 following World Cup campaigns.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) is still the third-most popular striker with 31.2 percent ownership, despite his switch from midfield over the summer.

Biggest dilemma for me becoming Eriksen or Mane in midfield. Can see Mane as more explosive but no Spurs coverage and have Salah as well as VVD.

Anyone convinced either way or is it just a toss up?

Great point. definitely looks better with Mane in there but the "too many eggs in one basket" thing is fairly important. also more fun to follow the first 12:30 game with a player involved 😀

It's Eriksen vs Mane in the end. The basket thing means nothing if Mane beats Eriksen.

I'm not massively convinced either way, but currently I have Salah + Robertson + VVD as my Liverpool options, and then Eriksen on top of that.

I think Robertson and VVD are easily the best defenders in their price bracket, and offer more over the other 5.5-6.5 defenders than Mane does over the other 9.5 mids.

I'd go Mane and here's why.

From GW1 Pool will have a strong starting XI and should explode out of the blocks.

Spurs will start with a weakened squad, so even if Eriksen plays well, will Llorente etc convert the chances? Moreover, their stadium isn't ready so they have more away games at the start of the season. Personally i'm laying off Spurs altogether until maybe my wildcard.

I have both of them but if I had to choose would probably go with Mane as for the short term looking at the first few gameweeks he is more likely to put in a big performance

    7. Daaf
      • 10 Years

I cant see mane being more explosive to be fair. Eriksen is top class, scores goals, gets assists, takes corners and free kicks and loves bonus.

Mane has terrible bonus because of his play style and no set pieces. So your banking on him getting a brace or scoring plus assisting for big hauls with bonus which doesn't really make him explosive does it?

That is a good discussion topic.

      Currently I am considering both:
      Salah; Mane; Eriksen; Richarlison; Costa
      Aguero; Zaha

      Seems good?

--> With Mahrez injured and negative Pep comments on Sane, I became a bit unsure about how nailed each of them is to start season, so I made Sane out and Mane in
--> As I surely wanted to keep some attacking exposure to City, I brought Kun in to replace Auba

If Sane or Mahrez looks nailed and in good form, I'll probably bring one of them in to replace Eriksen or Mane.

Pep said Sane is not fit and needs to improve its form. It decreased a bit the confidence I had on him being 100% nailed at the start.

However, it is important to monitor this issue. Next sunday will be decisive I would say. If Sane (re)gains Pep's confidence, he'll be back on my team

Then I think it’s strong. It’s a lot invested in defense, but that’s absolutely a preference thing. I would look elsewhere than Yedlin, personally, maybe even at the 4.0 bracket since he is the most obvious third rotation option, and upgrade Pedro because I’m just not convinced by him. Still, all those are subjective criticisms. Objectively, I think you have a strong team!

I’m on him at the moment. I think the key will be either getting someone like Silva as a set-and-forget option for the season (injuries not withstanding), or someone like Bernardo Silva or Mahrez (presuming he’s not injured) in the short term should they lose their starting place to some of the WC absentees.

I’ve got PVA as an attacking threat punt, 5 goals each season and decent fixtures. Tbf Tomkins and WB are my bench.

Just think the bottom 14 teams don’t initially offer much defensively and Palace could feasibly finish 10-12th and only Liverpool until GW9...

Great boast if I win my MLs with 3 palace defence too!!

I suppose the question on many of our minds is:
    Is Mendy worth the risk?

You would like to think he is relatively nailed, considering the other left back/left wing back options they have.
I just really think he could be so explosive this season when he plays, I'm just about leaning towards 6.0 being worth the risk.

I’m worried about City assets. Currently only on Aguero and had considered Ederson before deciding on a 4.5 GK. I seriously don’t think there are many terrific initial options at 6.0. Robbo, VVD.

I'm happy to start without. Robertson and VVD both offer similar attacking threat, proved themselves last year and are more nailed.

If it turns out Mendy is incredible, we can get him later.

I'd rather start with totally nailed players.

Then again.... If Mendy is nailed... Not sure what I'd do then!

City assets risk being rotated here and there, but with this team and these fixtures it is even riskier not to have some, imo. I have Mendy, Sane and Aguero at the moment.

I think he could be a headache to own personally. No doubt he is the best left back at city by a mile, which combined with his injury recovery could negatively impact his FPL returns.

I have clear visions of Pep resting him for the "Easy" home games you really want him to be playing in & saving him for the "Tougher" games vs. the big 6, tough champions league games, away games etc.

I think he'll have some big scores in him, but his owners will need to be very prepared for the inevitable missing of games

Not really a big deal if you have a couple of reasonable subs. I'm currently planning to bench him in the first game anyway.

I think Doherty and Tomkins are the best 4.5 options - currently on Doherty myself as wouldn't fancy double Palace defense if AWB is required from the bench.

Not easy to get clear visions of Pep, specially in pre-season. I think he will start the first games, then with Champions League action we'll see. He will be giving the width and length Pep wanted last year (Sane playing a bit more centraly).
Obviously his full recovery is still not confirmed 100%.

Need some advice. I am putting together a draft league with my buddies for the first time. What is the optimum number of players? We currently have 8 and have a few more wanting to join. Any pros/cons for you guys that have played before? Are the rules pretty much the same as when you play Fantasy NFL for injuries - say Kane gets a season ending injury you drop him and the first person in line has a chance to grab him?

Thanks for your time on this

      https://draft.premierleague.com/help covers the rules.
This season they added manager trades.
8 to me seems the best number.

I picked 8th in a 10-man league and won by a landslide. I think second and third were late-pickers too. I don't think it makes much difference tbh, the snake (or whatever it's called) pretty much evens things out.

What evens it out is how active the managers are during the season.

Yes, the key last year seemed to be shoring up the weaknesses in your team with shrewd acquisitions of free agents before they got hot.

I’m interested to see how much manager-to-manager trades impact the game this year.

It just opens up the game to corruption. Utterly pointless in my view. They could simply allow you to pick up players who've been dumped at the waiver phase on an immediate free transfer.

Also, I hope they've fixed the waiver priorities. Last season, if you proposed a waiver that was blocked by someone else buying the player you wanted, it wouldn't go on to your second priority (then third or fourth etc); it would move on to the next person. Very misleading and unintuitive, and turns the game into a crappy psychology guessing game.

Right. The later the manager picks, the more active they are throughout the season. Should have thought of that! 😆

Well I played a money league where you picked 2 teams and had 2 drafts. Then combined scores.
I had 9th pick and 4th . Bossed it with my 4th but the 9th was so poor it cost me any chance of anything. Part of that was due to limited strikers ( maybe resolved now) but Joselu was my main striker lol.

Spoke to the guy who had 9th in the other and he said same . He couldn't do anything and was miles behind

            So does the draft go
1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8 then 8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1 then 1/2 and so on?

Also what is best head to head or classic scoring? I would think head to head that way even the bottom team has a chance to win each week

I'd go head to head for a draft myself. Think it's more suited yes as like you say, it gives even the poorest of teams a better chance

Yes that's how the draft works. It's good to have a priority list if you can be bothered . Mine was a cash league so I made the effort and it solved a lot of indecision.

Not sure about trades though as I never played that format

FYI Mayhem, I'm not sure if it's changed, but last year it was better to have a priprity list on a piece of paper unless you're only planning to have one Draft team. The priorities list had to be made in each separate league. You couldn't have a master list to use for each draft.

I think it's just incidental/circumstantial/variable. The drafting system seems as fair as it can be to me. Depending on the season, I might want to go later rather than earlier. Last season i didn't want to be one of the first 2 because I wasn't dead keen on Kane or Sanchez, but I knew I'd have to pick them because they were the best options. Sounds weird, but I was aware that I could get an advantage over the first two or three at least by getting my second pick before them. I basically filled my team with City players who no-one prioritised due to rotation worries and ran away with it in the first quarter of the season.

We had 9 in ours last season and it was way too many, the quality of available picks drops drastically.

This year we have 10 interested, so created 2 leagues of 5, and will combine both leagues at the end of the season.

I'd suggest the max you want to go with should be 6 - 7.

Couldn't be Jorginho to take penalties at Chelsea? He does not figure in the list of the set-piece takers here, but he was unquestionably the penalty-taker at Napoli with Sarri. He is also very clever at. Also, in Sarri's schemes at Napoli the right winger (Callejon) used to break into the box and score a lot of easy goals from less than 3 meters from the left post simply touching the ball. Who will be that man at Chelsea IYO?
