There is nothing quite like a managerial change to rekindle interest in a Fantasy Premier League “sleeper”.

Gylfi Sigurdsson‘s (£7.5m) appeal as an FPL asset was nullified last season playing under both Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce at Everton, with the Icelandic midfielder having his worst season from a Fantasy perspective (four goals, four assists and a total of 96 FPL points) since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.

Unlike during his two-year spell at White Hart Lane, Sigurdsson was a regular first-team fixture for the Toffees during 2017/18, starting 25 of Everton’s first 30 league matches before a knee injury cut short his season.

Many pundits pointed to the fact that a large chunk of those appearances for Everton featured Sigurdsson as a left-sided midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 (or variations thereof), unable to influence the game as much as he could from his preferred “number 10” position.

It should be said, though, that Sigurdsson featured a lot on the left flank during his final campaign with Swansea City, a season that ended with nine goals and 13 assists for the Iceland international.

The capture of Richarlison (£6.5m) from Watford looks likely to put that argument to bed, with the Brazilian winger set to play on the left wing for new Everton boss Marco Silva as he did at Vicarage Road at the beginning of 2017/18.

Silva has stated that, should he be able to recruit a suitable candidate for the all-action “number 6” role, he intends for Everton to line up in a 4-3-3 formation this season, giving the freedom for at least one of the three-man midfield to step up and support the attacking trio.

This channel between midfield and attack would seem ideally suited for Sigurdsson to occupy and Iceland’s talisman made his first post-World Cup appearance for the Toffees in one of the central attacking midfield positions in the 3-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Blackburn Rovers on July 26. Sigurdsson was said to be one of the few players to emerge from that chastening loss with any credit, having demonstrated that he could execute Silva’s high-pressing gameplan in his 45-minute showing.

Sigurdsson was quiet in the 4-1 defeat to Rennes on July 28 but set Richarlison on his way for Everton’s consolation strike.

The Toffees’ current form in general is something of a concern. While too much weight can be given to pre-season run-outs that are effectively fitness-building exercises, Everton are nevertheless winless in five, having scored on only two occasions during these matches and conceded nine.

That Richarlison, who is available for £1.0m cheaper than Sigurdsson in FPL, has looked sprightly and found the back of the net in pre-season would further dent the Icelandic midfielder’s appeal.

Sigurdsson’s statistics from his final year at Swansea and his talismanic performances at the World Cup this summer, however, suggest that he could still be a credible FPL candidate in the right set-up.

GOAL THREAT

Sigurdsson mustered only 39 attempts on goal last season at a rate of a chance every 58 minutes. That mean was well down on his efforts in 2016/17, when averaging a shot on goal every 28.7 minutes. Sigurdsson fired in 116 attempts on goal during his last season with the Swans, with only Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) and Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) bettering that total among midfielders.

Everton’s record signing also had three fewer big chances, 27 fewer shots in the box and 33 fewer penalty area touches in 2017/18 than he had managed the previous season.

While it is easy to conclude that Sigurdsson is an FPL asset on the wane, some context needs to be provided as to how anaemic Everton were under Koeman and especially Allardyce on the whole.

Despite finishing eighth, Everton ranked 19th for attempts on goal and 18th for shots in the box. In the 24 matches that Marco Silva had at the helm of Watford, the Hornets registered 275 shots on goal. Allardyce’s tenure at Everton lasted exactly the same amount of league fixtures, with the Toffees recording only 213 attempts on goal under his reign.

While we are yet to see Silva fulfil his remit of bringing “attractive, attacking football” to Goodison Park in pre-season, the new Everton manager’s more offensive philosophy will surely bode well for Sigurdsson. That the Icelander’s goal conversion rate actually improved last season highlights that, if given adequate attacking opportunities, he will guarantee goals.

CREATIVITY

Like his goal threat figures, Sigurdsson’s underlying creativity statistics also nosedived last season.

The Icelandic midfielder created 38 chances at a rate of one every 60 minutes, a drop-off from the 2016/17 campaign in which he carved out 77 opportunities for the Swans and averaged a key pass once every 43 minutes.

Again, though, Sigurdsson’s figures reflect Everton’s laboured attacking play in 2017/18: the Toffees ranked 18th for chances created among Premier League sides.

SET-PIECE DUTIES

Where Sigurdsson’s goal and assist potential could really be enhanced this season is from dead-ball situations.

The Icelandic midfielder took 75 corners last season, a huge drop-off from the 2016/17 season in which he delivered 183 corner-kicks for the Swans. Sigurdsson also only had four attempts on goal from set-play situations in 2017/18, down from 27 in the previous campaign.

Sigurdsson could have the monopoly on set pieces this season, though. Wayne Rooney, who took 30 corners last season, has departed for the United States, while Leighton Baines (£5.5m), who took 22 corner-kicks, could soon be surplus to requirements with left-back Lucas Digne expected to sign from Barcelona in the coming days.

Sigurdsson might be presented with significantly more free-kick opportunities this season, too, and not just owing to the absence of Rooney: new signing Richarlison was the most fouled played in the Premier League last season.

Heh, that was obvious. What it does show is that there are a lot of viable options, which means that there is no clear dreary template team - that's what makes the game more exciting this year.

Only if you have your 13.0 invested in players that do better. If he doesn't do well it's not a given that you do better than Salah owners by virtue of not owning him alone, you have to own someone better too.

I've been sitting on two drafts since the day the FPL season started - one with Salah, one w/o. Only today I finally concluded it just HAS to be with Salah.

      I didn't want him.
I don't think he'll reach last year's heights and my team was awesome with that extra 4-5 million spread across it.

But if he has a flyer, which he could with their fixtures, I've got to find 13.1m and hundreds of thousands of players will already a lead on me.

Way easier to move him on in 4-6 GWs if he ends up over priced for his returns.
Think Ronaldo, Suarez or RVP. Just got to have em.

But I would add it looks like you've got 4 CBs and only one winger. Wingers usually outscore centre backs for obvious reasons.

Reports from the German press just now that we signed Max Meyer (previously from Schalke) anyone know much about him or probable FPL price?

    1. FantasyFootballFanatic

Was a German wonderkid (got a few caps very young), but fell out with the hierarchy at Schalke. An outstanding signing for Palace, could easily have ended up at a big club.

He used to be more of a CAM, but last season played deeper and became an engine, winning the ball back more than any other player in the Bundesliga.

No goals or assists last season, so definitely not fantasy potential. I would expect a price of 5.5, maybe?

Thanks for the feed back guys, yeah Max Meyer looks like a direct replacement for Cabaye who left. Like you say he has great passing and interceptions stats now i have investigated so slots straight in for Cabaye, but yeah not really Fantasy football material, and no Andy i think McArthur place is safe, such an important player for us, we just need the extra strength in depth in midfield having lost Cabaye/RLC this season.

I'd like to preface this by saying that I am a born and bred Fulham fan, and have no affiliation to United whatsoever.

There's no doubt that Jose Mourinho is an exceptionally bitter man. But I would be too, if I was subject to the constant level of scrutiny that he is. The level of media attention put on him vastly outweighs anything I have ever seen before, period. In my opinion, he is the most vilified manager in recent history, and to be frank, I think it's unjust and getting out of hand.

There is no other manager or club that gets destroyed every time they do badly and dismissed (“well they spent x amount, this is no more than what they should be doing”) every time they do well. As a club, the players and the manager are in a no win situation. If they turned around and won the Premier League this season, would newspapers and twitter accounts congratulate United, or would they say "That's what spending £300m over three seasons gets you". I certainly didn't hear that last season with City. I doubt I'll hear it this season when either City or Liverpool win it either. I am absolutely sick to death of these Twitter accounts like SPORF and Sports_Joe with hundreds of thousands of followers, and all they do is wait for the tiniest little thing to go wrong at United, and they pounce on it. I can't think of the last time anybody praised United.

Fact, Mourinho has been more successful than any other manager not named Guardiola or Conte over the last two seasons. Other managers, who have won precisely nothing, get not only a free pass, but widespread praise. Tell me exactly what Liverpool have done to warrant the abundance of praise lavished upon Klopp at every opportunity? Tell me why Guardiola wasn't bullied the way Mourinho is when he finished 3rd without winning a trophy, 15 points off the title?

I think Mourinho has every right to be grumpy. Why would you be happy as Mourinho - a human being - if having won two trophies and improving the situation of the club no end since Van Gaal's regime, you still get called an awful manager and an awful club by media and fans alike whenever the smallest thing goes against you. Klopp has won nothing since coming to the Premier League, but is hailed as some sort of hero and talisman.

People have an agenda against United that is completely unfounded. Yes, Mourinho is a bitter man, but I think based on the things that people are constantly saying about him and his club, I think he has every right to be. Managers should be judged on winning trophies, and Mourinho is a perineal winner.

See, I disagree with this. In Mourinho's first season at United he won the Europa League (having clearly given up on Premier League position many weeks prior to it finishing) and won the Carabao Cup. I truly can't remember him being this grumpy, morose man during that season. He self declared himself as "the happy one". Despite having the second most successful season of any team that year, United were vilified more than City who won nothing, Liverpool who won nothing, Arsenal who won nothing, and Spurs who won nothing. Why would you be happy with that? Of course your mood will fall after that.

Mourinho only ever became bitter when the media put his team in a no-win situation where they couldn't earn praise and could only do wrong.

It's because United play awful awful awful football. Professional football is played because people (ie us, the fans) love watching the game - when you start destroying the beauty of the game by playing awful awful awful football, you deserve the treatment he is getting.

And we tolerate and sometimes even admire awful football when the team who plays it is the underdog and has no alternative (Atletico, Burnley and the like) because of the fighting spirit - but if you are one of the two richest football clubs on the planet with a huge fan base, you have absolutely no excuse to play awful awful awful football.

      tl:dr He deserves it

Mourinho has -always- played that way though. He plays pragmatic, defensive football. That's how he won his titles at Chelsea. Was he ever criticised at Chelsea for his style of football prior to the season he was fired, because I certainly don't remember it?

There is a witch-hunt (warranted or not) in my opinion. Especially with the media (paper / online / TV). Things Jose does are deemed immoral, but Klopp, Pep and Conte can do the same and people turn a blind eye and let it go because of their perceived personalities. I'm talking shouting and being abusive to officials in full view of camera, undermining referee decisions etc.

His attitude stinks and as a reporter they must get fed up of his childish rants and be less sympathetic in their writing.

If Utd win it's due to his tactical genius, if they lose he blames the players / ref / board / tea-lady, especially the younger players (Shaw, Rashford etc). It's never his fault.

At Utd he needs to be challenging for the Premiership and Champions League and they're nowhere near and I think a lot of that is down to him. The odd league cup is not good enough given the resources at his disposal.

He deserves all he gets and more.
