There is nothing quite like a managerial change to rekindle interest in a Fantasy Premier League “sleeper”.

Gylfi Sigurdsson‘s (£7.5m) appeal as an FPL asset was nullified last season playing under both Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce at Everton, with the Icelandic midfielder having his worst season from a Fantasy perspective (four goals, four assists and a total of 96 FPL points) since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.

Unlike during his two-year spell at White Hart Lane, Sigurdsson was a regular first-team fixture for the Toffees during 2017/18, starting 25 of Everton’s first 30 league matches before a knee injury cut short his season.

Many pundits pointed to the fact that a large chunk of those appearances for Everton featured Sigurdsson as a left-sided midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 (or variations thereof), unable to influence the game as much as he could from his preferred “number 10” position.

It should be said, though, that Sigurdsson featured a lot on the left flank during his final campaign with Swansea City, a season that ended with nine goals and 13 assists for the Iceland international.

The capture of Richarlison (£6.5m) from Watford looks likely to put that argument to bed, with the Brazilian winger set to play on the left wing for new Everton boss Marco Silva as he did at Vicarage Road at the beginning of 2017/18.

Silva has stated that, should he be able to recruit a suitable candidate for the all-action “number 6” role, he intends for Everton to line up in a 4-3-3 formation this season, giving the freedom for at least one of the three-man midfield to step up and support the attacking trio.

This channel between midfield and attack would seem ideally suited for Sigurdsson to occupy and Iceland’s talisman made his first post-World Cup appearance for the Toffees in one of the central attacking midfield positions in the 3-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Blackburn Rovers on July 26. Sigurdsson was said to be one of the few players to emerge from that chastening loss with any credit, having demonstrated that he could execute Silva’s high-pressing gameplan in his 45-minute showing.

Sigurdsson was quiet in the 4-1 defeat to Rennes on July 28 but set Richarlison on his way for Everton’s consolation strike.

The Toffees’ current form in general is something of a concern. While too much weight can be given to pre-season run-outs that are effectively fitness-building exercises, Everton are nevertheless winless in five, having scored on only two occasions during these matches and conceded nine.

That Richarlison, who is available for £1.0m cheaper than Sigurdsson in FPL, has looked sprightly and found the back of the net in pre-season would further dent the Icelandic midfielder’s appeal.

Sigurdsson’s statistics from his final year at Swansea and his talismanic performances at the World Cup this summer, however, suggest that he could still be a credible FPL candidate in the right set-up.

GOAL THREAT

Sigurdsson mustered only 39 attempts on goal last season at a rate of a chance every 58 minutes. That mean was well down on his efforts in 2016/17, when averaging a shot on goal every 28.7 minutes. Sigurdsson fired in 116 attempts on goal during his last season with the Swans, with only Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) and Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) bettering that total among midfielders.

Everton’s record signing also had three fewer big chances, 27 fewer shots in the box and 33 fewer penalty area touches in 2017/18 than he had managed the previous season.

While it is easy to conclude that Sigurdsson is an FPL asset on the wane, some context needs to be provided as to how anaemic Everton were under Koeman and especially Allardyce on the whole.

Despite finishing eighth, Everton ranked 19th for attempts on goal and 18th for shots in the box. In the 24 matches that Marco Silva had at the helm of Watford, the Hornets registered 275 shots on goal. Allardyce’s tenure at Everton lasted exactly the same amount of league fixtures, with the Toffees recording only 213 attempts on goal under his reign.

While we are yet to see Silva fulfil his remit of bringing “attractive, attacking football” to Goodison Park in pre-season, the new Everton manager’s more offensive philosophy will surely bode well for Sigurdsson. That the Icelander’s goal conversion rate actually improved last season highlights that, if given adequate attacking opportunities, he will guarantee goals.

CREATIVITY

Like his goal threat figures, Sigurdsson’s underlying creativity statistics also nosedived last season.

The Icelandic midfielder created 38 chances at a rate of one every 60 minutes, a drop-off from the 2016/17 campaign in which he carved out 77 opportunities for the Swans and averaged a key pass once every 43 minutes.

Again, though, Sigurdsson’s figures reflect Everton’s laboured attacking play in 2017/18: the Toffees ranked 18th for chances created among Premier League sides.

SET-PIECE DUTIES

Where Sigurdsson’s goal and assist potential could really be enhanced this season is from dead-ball situations.

The Icelandic midfielder took 75 corners last season, a huge drop-off from the 2016/17 season in which he delivered 183 corner-kicks for the Swans. Sigurdsson also only had four attempts on goal from set-play situations in 2017/18, down from 27 in the previous campaign.

Sigurdsson could have the monopoly on set pieces this season, though. Wayne Rooney, who took 30 corners last season, has departed for the United States, while Leighton Baines (£5.5m), who took 22 corner-kicks, could soon be surplus to requirements with left-back Lucas Digne expected to sign from Barcelona in the coming days.

Sigurdsson might be presented with significantly more free-kick opportunities this season, too, and not just owing to the absence of Rooney: new signing Richarlison was the most fouled played in the Premier League last season.

Unsure wether to have salah as a sole liverpool player,

Double up on salah with firmino or mane

or just have mane and firmino and spend funds elsewhere 🙁

Because arguably there's better value out there than tripling up on Liverpool attack.

You only have 3 attackers from top 6 clubs. The aim should be 4-6 in my opinion.

That's pretty subjective imo. Often peripheral figures at big clubs aren't worth it over thr main men at so called smaller clubs.

The top 6 clubs score far more goals than the other 14 teams. How many goals do you realistically expect Richarlison and Cairney to be involved in this season?

Apart from Liverpool and City, who I think score enough goals for even peripheral players to get goals, the others in the top 6 don't score enough as teams for someone like Willian last year to outscore someone like Mahrez last year (poor example, but best I could come up with off the top of my head)

I don't shre Saido's assumptions; the problem for me is you only have one nailed defender (Robbo). The rest are liable to rotation or being dropped.

I can't figure out which of Wan-Bissaka, Van Aanholt, Zaha and Sorloth to bin. Sorloth and AWB, if starting, will bag 0.5 TV each plus be really good viable options. Zaha and PVA both look like points monsters... This is quite tough 😛

Think the answer has to be Sorloth here. PvA and Zaha are guaranteed starters and will inevitably score some amount of points. AWB costs 4.0 and even if he doesn't play regularly, is not a risk due to his price and position.

Sorloth on the other hand takes up a striker spot, costs more than the minimum and isn't guaranteed to play.

      1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…

He looks pretty nailed on though. If he looks like starting on deadline day, I think he will (seeing as Benteke is really poor). And him taking up a striker spot doesn't worry me very much as I'm thinking of going 3-5-2 anyway.

I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure about Sorloths chances. I think they're quite good, as even before Bentekes injury he was challenging him for starts, and he hasn't really given any reason to be dropped in pre season aside one mediocre game.

Would you actually play Sorloth over the likes of Wood, Zaha or Arnie? Ofcourse he'll free up £1.5 mil but not sure he is worth the risk, unless you plan out a rotational system which may require 5 nailed/ starting midfielders meaning potentially additional funds of £2-3 mil are needed.

If Sorloth plays upfront in the attacking set up of palace as they are being drummed up to be, he has the potential for getting in on goals. Looks like it in pre-season atleast (I know its no true measure)
Or well atleast that is what I am telling myself 🙂

Yes, B) looks like it has more flair, but as you said, it could be A) that racks up more points down the line.

I think Richarlison is the Everton player to starth with. If he had been transferred before the game opened, he would be more than just 6.5. If Siggy gets assists, an odd goal here and there, and on top of that gets regular points form set pieces, he could be worth the 1.0 extra over Richarlison.

He's not quite developed into the set-and-forget type that he certainly has shown the potential for as yet. Definitely a useful asset for targeted fixtures / when on form, but always likely to be on the chopping block when the next shiny thing comes along.

Pedro or Jota? I'm edging towards Pedro to start with and can always switch to Jota if he performs well or Pedro is dropped.

Don't really fancy Pedro with uncertainty surrounding Chelsea attack just now. Could change by next Thursday evening though.

yea that's what i'm worried about,I already have Richarlison so I might reduce him down to a 5 million mid and spend the cash elsewhere.

The question I've been asking is Richarlison or Jota?

I was very tempted by Pedro but a lot has to happen before I'll take him now that I've sat and thought it out. I'll give him and Chelsea the "eye test" this weekend before I revisit him.

Alonso, Azpi, Robertson, Malone, Wan-Bissaka, Salah, De Bruyne (Sane GW1), Pedro, Mkhi, Schurrle, Zaha, Arnautovic, Tosun...

Thinking Chelsea are gonna be quite attacking under Sarri so use their fullbacks as extra attack. Spend more in mid and get 3 good solid strikers rather than a worldie like Kane etc? Tosun is one to watch this season for me, even though I'm a Liverpool fan!

I think a Chelski double up is mad - Alonso won't be the same player in a back 4, and I think the full backs comment is based on a perception of Sarri as attacking rather than a consideration of how full backs played at Napoli. I think you've also got a severe team structural issue - How will you jump on Aguero, Kane and Aub if they start scoring big? A Liverpool double up in defence is also a little mad and prevents you from getting the well valued Mane or Firmino

            • 10 Years

Fair enough on the Chelsea part! It does seem mad doubling up on Liverpool defenders I know, but in actual fact we kept more clean sheets than anyone second half of last season I believe, and that was with Karius in net! My other thought was to swap Schurrle for Cairney (5m) and then one of the strikers for Firmino. Sacrificing a defender to fund it too.

Wolves defensive assets beginning to mount...Boly, Doherty and now Jonny turning eyes.
I've been trying to figure Patricio (part of a 4.5 rotation) but now wondering if a 4.5 Wolves defender, and Ederson in goal (for those delicious fixtures 2-7) could be the way forward?

I'm considering going from Patricio set and forget to Fab/Fos rotating and brining in Doherty.

If you went the Ederson route would he be your only city def cover? I still have Mendy in my current draft but I've all but gave up on him for the start of the season with the fact he hasn't featured yet.

Yeah, I currently have Robertson and Davies as my 'premiums', but would need to downgrade Davies to a 5.5 to afford Ederson. Currently only Mahrez from City, but toying with Aguero too, so it would just be Ederson. Other option is to start off with Davies and switch Gw2 or 3 to Mendy or a.n.other City defensive option once the situation becomes clearer.

That's true, but also if they do leak a goal chances are they'll be no save points either. Aside from Cardiff, Newcastle, Huddersfield I can see the other teams at least having a go at scoring against Man City. Interested on your thoughts though!

        RMT

        Pickford,
        Mendy, TAA, Daniels,
        Salah, Mahrez, Mkhitaryan, Sessegnon,
        Aubameyang, Zaha, Tosun

        (Ryan, Gunnarsson, Cedric, Peltier)
        itb - 1.5

        A) Don't really like Tosun except for the fixture and Arnautovic has terrible fixture. Which one is better?
        B) Sessegnon or Jota?
        C) Keeping the 1.5 for Auba>Kane once Kane confirms to be playing. Or should I just ditch Kane plan and upgrade Tosun to any other striker?
        D) How about defence? Is it too light?

        1. DivocksHighSocks
          • 8 Years

          a) Arnautovic is banging them in for fun in preseason - West Ham will score a few goals, even if they aren't willing in the early fixtures, and Arnautovic is likely to be getting/assisting them.

          b) Richarlison

          c) keep Auba, upgrade the defence - say Daniels to Robertson - you won't have to worry about rotation either that way

          d) answered in C, definitely get rid of Daniels, Bournemouth have just signed a new left back to compete with him.

If we imagine Arnautovic will get 1 goal and 1 assist for a total of ~17 points in first four GWs (avg 4.25 pts per game), would you be happy with that for 7.0m? Or not?

depends what my rank is and what the alternatives do...

btw only 3 strikers are projected to do better than Arnie in week 1-6 and they are much more expensive....

Suppose you're aiming for 60 points per week. 4.25/60 gives about 7.1% of your points.

Suppose you have 17m on the bench.
Then you'd expect 7/83 which is about 8.4% of your points to come from a player of that price.

So with those returns, I'd say not amazing value for the first 4 weeks. Obviously we don't know what he's actually going to do though

        Is Otamendi too dangerous?

Laporte is flagged meaning he's probably competing with Stones and Kompany. Otamendi played almost the entirety of last season...

Problem is you never know with Pep...

Is Hoedt a sure starter for Southampton? I was on Cedric but thinking now he won't be playing at the beginning of the season? I like saints fixtures early on and seem the best set of fixtures for a 4.5?
        Thanks.

Don't think a Southampton defender is really that important.

i agree on whole, but looking at 4.5's southampton seem to have the best fixtures at the beginning and are cheap. So i was just wondering if he would be a starter.

Also, he's mainly going to be bench player. Main 3 defenders will be Liverpool, Arsenal and Man U, I would just prefer to play a southampton defender against Burnley week one over arsenal def against City so will bench.
