There is nothing quite like a managerial change to rekindle interest in a Fantasy Premier League “sleeper”.

Gylfi Sigurdsson‘s (£7.5m) appeal as an FPL asset was nullified last season playing under both Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce at Everton, with the Icelandic midfielder having his worst season from a Fantasy perspective (four goals, four assists and a total of 96 FPL points) since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.

Unlike during his two-year spell at White Hart Lane, Sigurdsson was a regular first-team fixture for the Toffees during 2017/18, starting 25 of Everton’s first 30 league matches before a knee injury cut short his season.

Many pundits pointed to the fact that a large chunk of those appearances for Everton featured Sigurdsson as a left-sided midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 (or variations thereof), unable to influence the game as much as he could from his preferred “number 10” position.

It should be said, though, that Sigurdsson featured a lot on the left flank during his final campaign with Swansea City, a season that ended with nine goals and 13 assists for the Iceland international.

The capture of Richarlison (£6.5m) from Watford looks likely to put that argument to bed, with the Brazilian winger set to play on the left wing for new Everton boss Marco Silva as he did at Vicarage Road at the beginning of 2017/18.

Silva has stated that, should he be able to recruit a suitable candidate for the all-action “number 6” role, he intends for Everton to line up in a 4-3-3 formation this season, giving the freedom for at least one of the three-man midfield to step up and support the attacking trio.

This channel between midfield and attack would seem ideally suited for Sigurdsson to occupy and Iceland’s talisman made his first post-World Cup appearance for the Toffees in one of the central attacking midfield positions in the 3-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Blackburn Rovers on July 26. Sigurdsson was said to be one of the few players to emerge from that chastening loss with any credit, having demonstrated that he could execute Silva’s high-pressing gameplan in his 45-minute showing.

Sigurdsson was quiet in the 4-1 defeat to Rennes on July 28 but set Richarlison on his way for Everton’s consolation strike.

The Toffees’ current form in general is something of a concern. While too much weight can be given to pre-season run-outs that are effectively fitness-building exercises, Everton are nevertheless winless in five, having scored on only two occasions during these matches and conceded nine.

That Richarlison, who is available for £1.0m cheaper than Sigurdsson in FPL, has looked sprightly and found the back of the net in pre-season would further dent the Icelandic midfielder’s appeal.

Sigurdsson’s statistics from his final year at Swansea and his talismanic performances at the World Cup this summer, however, suggest that he could still be a credible FPL candidate in the right set-up.

GOAL THREAT

Sigurdsson mustered only 39 attempts on goal last season at a rate of a chance every 58 minutes. That mean was well down on his efforts in 2016/17, when averaging a shot on goal every 28.7 minutes. Sigurdsson fired in 116 attempts on goal during his last season with the Swans, with only Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) and Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) bettering that total among midfielders.

Everton’s record signing also had three fewer big chances, 27 fewer shots in the box and 33 fewer penalty area touches in 2017/18 than he had managed the previous season.

While it is easy to conclude that Sigurdsson is an FPL asset on the wane, some context needs to be provided as to how anaemic Everton were under Koeman and especially Allardyce on the whole.

Despite finishing eighth, Everton ranked 19th for attempts on goal and 18th for shots in the box. In the 24 matches that Marco Silva had at the helm of Watford, the Hornets registered 275 shots on goal. Allardyce’s tenure at Everton lasted exactly the same amount of league fixtures, with the Toffees recording only 213 attempts on goal under his reign.

While we are yet to see Silva fulfil his remit of bringing “attractive, attacking football” to Goodison Park in pre-season, the new Everton manager’s more offensive philosophy will surely bode well for Sigurdsson. That the Icelander’s goal conversion rate actually improved last season highlights that, if given adequate attacking opportunities, he will guarantee goals.

CREATIVITY

Like his goal threat figures, Sigurdsson’s underlying creativity statistics also nosedived last season.

The Icelandic midfielder created 38 chances at a rate of one every 60 minutes, a drop-off from the 2016/17 campaign in which he carved out 77 opportunities for the Swans and averaged a key pass once every 43 minutes.

Again, though, Sigurdsson’s figures reflect Everton’s laboured attacking play in 2017/18: the Toffees ranked 18th for chances created among Premier League sides.

SET-PIECE DUTIES

Where Sigurdsson’s goal and assist potential could really be enhanced this season is from dead-ball situations.

The Icelandic midfielder took 75 corners last season, a huge drop-off from the 2016/17 season in which he delivered 183 corner-kicks for the Swans. Sigurdsson also only had four attempts on goal from set-play situations in 2017/18, down from 27 in the previous campaign.

Sigurdsson could have the monopoly on set pieces this season, though. Wayne Rooney, who took 30 corners last season, has departed for the United States, while Leighton Baines (£5.5m), who took 22 corner-kicks, could soon be surplus to requirements with left-back Lucas Digne expected to sign from Barcelona in the coming days.

Sigurdsson might be presented with significantly more free-kick opportunities this season, too, and not just owing to the absence of Rooney: new signing Richarlison was the most fouled played in the Premier League last season.

Liverpool's penalty taker may just be a case of the situation. E.g. if a player is on a hattrick/team losing/one of the front 3 hasn't scored etc.

Klopp does tend to sub Mane off a fair bit too.

Thanks. I am also not keen on Mane. He is so good on the field of course, yet as a fantasy propsect he is not as appealing as his competition, to me. He doesn't often play the full 90 minutes, gets randomly benched for rest, and does not score as much as Salah or Firmino. I love his game though! So, if I am going to spend approx 9.5m, it's either Firmino (kinda interchangeable for me with Mane), Eriksen, or Mahrez/Sane, or KDB.

Misses start of season and no Mahrez. Not much going for that punt with Arnie and Zaha likely better options and much cheaper

You'd have to imagine he'd be involved in most of Leicesters goals. Think they might struggle though and he was tired/injured at the WC.

Vardy and Lukaku are the two players you wouldn't even know existed based on this site over the last couple of days. What a difference a season makes!

Vardy was injured and Lukaku played a lot of mins in the wc maybe that's factoring in for people. That being said, I think Vardy will do decent this year. Pretty consistent + 100% on pens now.

The funny thing is Leicester need Vardy so bad. They don't have a choice but to start him Maguire and Schmeicel

Lukaku was chasing Kane for the golden boot a couple seasons back and ended up on 25 goals. Suddenly drops to 16 in his first season at United. Hmmm.

Vardy seems a good differential for sure. On pens, nailed on. But a risky one as its unclear how Leicester will look going forward without Mahrez

In addition to this page’s Sigurdsson article, it’s worth noting that Richarlison was the most fouled player in the league last season, and as Everton’s main creative attacker (I’m assuming) that sort of thing will continue. This could further enhance Siggy’s set piece appeal.

Siggy was looking really good in the games before his injury last season and he was decent in the World Cup. Deffo one to monitor.

Not great. The defence is quite weak and I doubt Pedro will play in front of Hazard or Willian. Gray is a punt from a very average side and hasn’t shown enough to be considered yet.

Was starting to doubt the Pedro pick myself tbh. Richarlison a better pick? Or perhaps Jota?

Both are nailed on so yes. I prefer Richarlison but only because I haven’t seen much of Jota and I’m not quite getting the hype surrounding Wolves just yet.

Are you confident mahrez will play enough to justify his price. You could always sell him I suppose, but that's a transfer used. I would downgrade firmino for now e.g. To wood and improve your mids or defence.

Fair enough. Just feel I needed a City player at least. Isnt Jesus back? Wondering whether Agiero isnt as nailed as FFS comments seem to suggest.

Hard one to call. Kdb is the key city player for me but holding off him for gw1. Outside of him, you will have lots of rotation this season and think pep will be increasing his focus on champions league this season

Firmino looks to have a massive ownership but I'm going mane at the start. I think he's a bit underrated and there seems more options upfront with zaha wood and arnie aswell as the big hitters. I think mane is going to have a big season

I think going without Mane or Salah is a mistake - United are in a precarious moment and are not attacking. Sane is a rotation risk although I like him early on. I just think Mane/Salah offer better value. The defence is a little weak and there is no point pairing De Gea with a 4.5 - either do two 4.5s or De Gea and a 4.0

Can someone more creative than me come up with a decent analogy to shut down the “Mané + Firmino v Salah” and “sufficient coverage” idea?

I’m thinking of maybe something along the lines of a full English.

Mané is the toast, Firmino the beans, Salah is the eggs, bacon, sausages, hash browns, mushrooms, tomatoes and whatever else you like to throw on your meal before the 13:30 kick off on a Sunday.

Basically it’s not coverage. Mané and Firmino are both good in their own right... but Salah alone trumps them both.

However, they can both be used to supplement Salah for a better outcome.

Who has any of these players and why? My reasons below, what's yours?

    Most selected FPL players:

    Salah 50.5% - Yes. FPL God 17/18.
Firmino 36.1% No. Feel like he won't be as influential as last season
Kane 33.6% No. It's August, Kane doesn't like August.
Zaha 32.1% Yes. Palace talisman, win's penalties and spear heads their attack.
De Gea 29.5% No. Too expensive and feel like Man United will leak more than usual. Looked shaky in WC.
KDB 27.8% No. Would love to have but still uncertain whether he'll start the first week.
Trippier 26.7% No. Unsure if starting first week, rotation risk with Aurier.
Arnautovic 26.4% Yes. Although has a tough opening fixture, still grabbed him. If West Ham were to score at all, it's through this man
Aubameyang 24.4% Yes. Same reason as above.
Maguire 24.2% No. Lot's of transfer rumors and uncertain to start opening round.
Fabianski 22.8% No. Still a great pick to have if you decide to rotate and go cheap with a 4.5/4.5. I've personally decided with Ederson, 6/7 opening games are versing newly promoted teams of the last 2 years.

Now that Higuain has gone to AC Milan, it looks like Morata is set to be Chelsea's main striker this season. He could be a snip at 9.0 million. Anyone else interested? While many may point at the fact of his terrrible run of form last season (back injury or not), we should also be mindful that he did start the season exceptionally well under his new manager at the time Antonio Conte. He scored 6 goals in his first 6 Premier League starts (albeit including a hattrick against a defenceless Stoke). Hopefully Sarri will have a similiar effect.

    1. Zladan
      • 8 Years

Morata is in my current draft. I definitely fancy Chelsea to start strong and him to be central to it as he was at the start of last season. New manager and a point to prove.

    2. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

Won't make Morata a better striker though. Haz would still be the better option. FWIW I wouldn't have considered Higuain either.

My gut feeling is this - Sarri's tactics are different to what Chelsea are used to, and like with Spurs under Poch and Liverpool under Klopp, the squad will need a few months. The issue is the pressing - I don't think it's in Alonso's nature at the back, and up the pitch the forwards will need time to adjust. For me that means whoever is nailed at the back for Chelsea could be decent investments, but the offensive players may under-perform in the first few months.
