Another Sessegnon warning as Brady recovery drags on

Burnley continue to struggle with injury this pre-season as Robbie Brady suffered another setback in his recovery.

His expected absence should make it easier to predict who will start on the wings for them in Gameweek 1 but questions still remain over their goalkeeper situation.

Elsewhere, there was another stern warning for those invested in Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m).

ATLETICO BILBAO 1-3 FULHAM | FULHAM 0-0 FIORENTINA

  • Goals: Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m), Aboubakar Kamara (£4.5m), own-goal
  • Assists: Jean Michaël Seri (£5.5m), Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m)

The trio of goals scored against Atletico Bilbao ended a run of three goalless matches for Fulham as Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) finally involved himself in attacking returns this summer. It was his cross that Yeray Álvarez directed into his own net towards the end of the first of two Cup of Traditions matches. However, there was further confirmation that Sessegnon offers much less in terms of attacking potential when playing at left-back. He was used there in the second match of the afternoon, for the second time in pre-season, and had little influence on the game. The 12.1 percent of Fantasy managers who currently own the 18-year-old should make themselves aware of that and keep an eye on new signing Maxime Le Marchand (£4.5m) – any injury or suspension to him could force Sessegnon back into defence this season.

These two matches saw new signing Fabri (£4.5m) make his first appearances in goal, and give us a chance to see whether he could take the number one jersey from Marcus Bettinelli (£4.5m) this season. Of particular note was the former Besiktas man’s distribution, able to easily find his full-backs and get play moving well from the back. According to local press, this is an area that Bettinelli has struggled with in the past which could hand the advantage to Fabri, who also has experience of playing Champions League football too.

In front of him in the first match, we saw Le Marchand, Tim Ream (£4.5m), Denis Odoi (£4.5m) and Cyrus Christie (£4.5m) line up as the back-four for the third time in pre-season. No other combination has been used as often by Slaviša Jokanović during the summer, suggesting – barring any further recruitment – they will start at Craven Cottage when Crystal Palace come to visit on August 11.

Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m) has done his chances of featuring from the beginning in that match no harm after a decent display in these friendlies. The DR Congo international faces competition for a start on the flanks of the front-three from Sessegnon and Andre Schürrle (£6.0m), who made his first appearance for Fulham against Fiorentina, but is currently the club’s top-scorer in pre-season and with more minutes in the bank than Schürrle. However, the German World Cup winner reportedly impressed in his 45-minute spell in the Cup of Traditions final and, as the new signing, is expected to also be in with a strong shout of starting Gameweek 1.

FULHAM XI vs BILBAO (4-3-3): Fabri; Le Marchand, Odoi, Ream, Christie; Johansen, Seri, Cairney; Sessegnon, Kamara, Kebano.

FULHAM XI vs FIORENTINA (4-3-3): Fabri; Sessegnon, Odoi, Ream, Christie; McDonald, Johansen, Seri; Kebano, Kamara, Schürrle.

BURNLEY 0-0 MONTPELIER

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Robbie Brady’s (£5.5m) recovery from injury hit a setback in Burnley’s latest pre-season match, a 0-0 draw with Montpelier. The former Hull City man has been on his way back from a knee injury sustained in December but was forced off with a hamstring problem just before half-time on Sunday. Manager Sean Dyche has sought to ease fears that Brady will be on the sidelines for some time, which should be of interest to Fantasy managers aware of the Irishman’s potential this season.

“It was a very minor thing in his hamstring so we took him off immediately. He’s been out for a while, so we don’t want any secondary injuries if we can help it.” – Sean Dyche

Regardless of how much of a setback this proves to be for Brady, his withdrawal strengthens the case for investment in either Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.om) or Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) – the two wingers who started against Aberdeen last week. The Icelandic international has one goal to his name in pre-season and is the key man for set-pieces while Lennon has found the net twice so far this summer and is £1.0m cheaper.

Burnley are still waiting on an update on Nick Pope’s (£5.0m) dislocated shoulder, with him having seen a specialist this week. With Tom Heaton (£5.0m) carrying a calf strain, the prospects of the Clarets’ defence are somewhat up in the air. There is no return date set for either him or Pope yet with Anders Lindegaard the most likely stand-in so far. It may be difficult to invest in £5.0m defenders like James Tarkowski or Ben Mee if there are doubts over the man between the sticks.

“The shoulder joint definitely came out and (went) back in so it just depends on the damage along the way. We’ll see what the specialist says tomorrow. When you look at the incident it was a freaky incident. I’ve seen the stills and it is just a freak moment in a game. It went back in pretty quick, so it depends on the disruption in the shoulder. We’ll find out more tomorrow.” – Sean Dyche

Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m) was the only member of the starting XI that faced Aberdeen to feature from the beginning in this match, as Dyche largely used either second-string options or players on their return from injury problems. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was one of the latter, his involvement against Montpelier the first since the opening match of pre-season. The former Plymouth Argyle striker managed 60 minutes before being replaced by Nakhi Wells (£4.5m). Sam Vokes (£5.5m) started alongside him after coming off the bench to equalise for Burnley at Pittodrie.

BURNLEY XI (4-4-2): Legzdins; Taylor, Dunne, Long, Bardsley; Brady (McNeil 42’), Hendrick (Goodridge 60’), O’Neill, Walters; Barnes (Wells 60’), Vokes (Agyei 70’).

I like the aguerro pick. Not sure trips will be back fo start of season. And pep has already said d. Silvas minutes will be managed more this year. Maybe hold off on Bailly to see its sign a cb?

managed more means less or more minutes? maybe I should leave City mid, Aguero should be enough for start.

Pretty good. Don't like kamara. Unlikely to get you many points over the season. At different stages you may need him. Lots of good options at 6.5. Best of luck anyway

Kamara will be my deadwood because I won't play 3 forwards. Any recommend for mid around 5.0-5.5 for fifth mid?

I guess he’ll be deliberately rested more. That said he missed a lot last season due to his son so could actually play a similar amount. They have more cover now too with mahrez. I like neves. Poor disciplinary record but that should be helped by moutinho signing as hell do more of the defensive work

I would not recommend any deadwood for your mids or fwds. I think mcarthur will do well at 5.0 in midfield. Only 0.5 more than Kamara. Good options at 6.5 will emerge for your fwds at 6.5 over the season

    Salah mathematics

I am trying to figure out a mathematical way of checking [salah VS (mane + 3.5)]. so let's see if i'm getting somewhere:

stage A - predicting Salah points

Last season salah had 303 points in 2905 minutes. to predict what he will do this season, i took two assumptions:
1 - last year he had no significant injuries and pool had very weak bench. the bench has really improved (shaqiri the main man) and hard to assume another completely injury free year. let's reduce his minutes by just 10% = 2610 minutes - still a lot of minutes but more reasonable than last season.
2 - the 303 rate is the most in FPL history and over 0.104 points per minute - just insane. it takes an extreme leap of faith to believe he can keep this level. let's assume he is ALMOST at that level - and give him just a 10% reduction in output = which means 0.94 points per minute - still an unbelievable rate of production, that is matched at most by one player every year if at all - yet we assume he is capable.
3 - let's multiply 2610 minutes by 0.94 points per minute = 245 points. less than last season of course - but still a top 1 or top 2 output in the game for sure.

Step B - predicting Mane points

we will make this one shorter - i assume no change in output level of points per minute (0.67) because it's the third year in a row he is putting up a very similar output, and i assume 10% increase in minutes because injuries had him at only 2189 minutes - the 10% increase gives him 2407 minutes - still 200 minutes less than salah but he is subbed off a bit more so its reasonable.
    2407*0.67= 162 points

so, for now we are at salah 245 vs mane 162. that's 83 points gap. not 156 like last year, but still very respectable. now lets see what we can do with the 3.5 extra funds.

Step C - the average points a 7.0 or less players (average cost around 6.0-6.5) did last year - obviously i assume you all choose wisely, so i selected just the top ten 7.0 or below players last year - gros, mili, lingard, zaha, perez, muirray, etc.
The average of the top 10 - 128 points

Step D - the average of the top 10 heavy hitters - players with significant price - 8.5 and over (average around 9.5-10) - sterling, KDB, Ericksen, kane, kun, etc.
the average of the top 10 heavy hitters - 204 points.

well now, we did some math and reach a very interesting place:
Mane vs Salah should be 83 points difference
3.5 extra cash upgrade should be worth 76 points

    very very close.

this was not done to justify not having salah - and i am aware of course there is many other issues like captain choice, like hitting on the heavy hitter upgrade, like spreading the 3.5 cash on several smaller upgrades and more - too many variables to calculate.

All i was trying show is the situation is actually much closer it seems, and we should not brand non salah owners as automatic morons.

one clarification - in all calculations i took just mids and forwards - defenders is a different story and usually the 3.5 savings go towards a heavy hitter mid or forward.

Good work. For me the big advantage was the regularity of salahs scoring. This really helps when selecting a captain. I found it more difficult to predict when say sane or Eriksen would score.

Ok but imagine Salah sets a new record due to Liverpool having a better squad (Fabinho and Keita) and his coversion rate improves.
People are expecting him to regress just because he had an amazing season, that's silly.

You can double the 83 (or add the 41 points he gets more than an other big hitter in your model) if he's your captain. A 13m player is rarely worth it based on standard points (as you could have one of your theoretical 10m players getting 204 points instead, and use that 3m to gain more than 41 points in your model) but it's because you will captain him as the best player that the cost for 1 12m+ player is worth it

Interesting. Thankss. However, you also need to consider double captain points as much more likely to captain Salah rather than Mane. Also the fact the we don't play FF for total score over a season, as will chop and change according to form/injuries. If you think Salah will not play as many minutes, is this due to injuries, being rested or substitutions. If the former, then you would replace him then and so the analysis doesn't hold up as well.

Even at 13m, Salah's "value" based on last years points per match / this year's price is still an astonishing 0.65.
Whereas Mane is at 0.54. Taking your assumption of a 10% drop in points for Salah, that gets to 0.58 PPMPM. Still marginally better than Mane. Taking into account captaining, then Salah a clear winner. The only caveat is that 8.4 PPM is astonishing returns, so can we expect a more significant drop in output. I for one am will not bet against him, at least til we see the first few games....

Aguero posted 216, 184 and 165 pts while being priced 13.0 or 12.5. Hazard was between 176 and 233 pts in five out of six seasons at 10.5. Kane was between 191 and 224.

If we assume Salah will get even 280 this time around, two 6.5m defenders will outscore him easily.

When Kane and Aguero start firing we got captains who can score big in any game.

I only have Salah in my team because 1) I don't want a red arrow when he scores a brace and gives 30 pts to half of managers in FPL, 2) other premium options aren't fit after WC yet.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

With less than two weeks to go before the season starts, our FPL teams are starting to take shape. Significant tinkering will still happen but many of our squads, just like the PL squads, are looking more solid.

Are you feeling you’re getting close to a team you like? What are the problem areas/positions in your side?

For many mangers, it’s rare for a player in the first draft to still be around for GW1.

Who has been in your side from the beginning? Is Salah the only one, or have you stuck with your initial squad more than that?

How much do you expect it to change before GW1?

The main issue for me is Man City attack and whether I should get someone in now or wait and see.

Only Salah has been in my team from the start.

I think I am 90% there with my team so should just be some tweaks assuming no major injuries etc...

Still expected to be avtive here this season?

Im curious. If the info was given on these pages I missed it.

Cedric has been in nearly all my drafts, but a bit worried he won't start the season.

Fab has been in all my drafts with 4.5x2 but I'm on Ederson right now

Stuck with Robertson, Azpi, PVA & Stek. Rest has changed due to tinkering, preseason, team news etc.
Final problem area is deciding on how to spend my last 11m on final staring player + first sub. Rest looking fairly settled all considering.

With the big European clubs returning from pre-season tours, there's likely to be a massive transfer merry-go round - especially for PL clubs whose transfer deadline is only next week! I hope no-one is getting too emotionally attached to their current team.....

The only area I am not sure about is my 5.0 4th mid, Neves. I dont really trust any of the 5.0 midfielders, and I wanted to take a punt on someone at Wolves as they were very solid last year.

Not a single player in my final team that was in my first draft. I never expect that though - I wait for the pre-season and adjust according to players that seem to be hitting form in time for the start of the season.

I'm convinced Rui Patricio will be the best 4.5m keeper, so hasn't moved.

Firmino is a great safe pick, can easily match the 11m forwards at 1.5m less.

      Robbo another sound pick.

Never had more than the absolute minimum spend on the bench, you want those funds in your starting XI to jump on the form options. e.g Hamer 4m Wan-Bissaka 4m Peltier 4m Kamara 4.5m in 3-5-2

You’re wrong. I have had him from the start because unlike other potential big hitters like Kane Hazard Aguero etc he is sure to start GW1, he has a great fixture to start with (and very decent ones for a while) and I think he is the best captain choice for GW1 - as in ‘the most likely to hit a big score’, not as in ‘hence I need to have him in case he explodes’

          • 7 Years

I agree he's the best captain pick for GW1, but you don't build a team just for GW1. From GW2-4, players like Aguero, Auba and Kane look good captain picks too. You especially don't put a 13m player in your team just for GW1 without even exploring what kind of a team you can build without him.

I think people need to open their minds up to different strategies, regardless of what they decide to go with in the end.

The problem for me is the players I can’t pick at the moment. Would like KDB & Haz but as of now I’m having placeholders and planned transfers. Not ideal. Ever present from initial draft, Aubameyang. He’ll be there come gw1.

The problem areas are around what formation and strategy I go for. Contrary to the death of the third striker, I quite like my current frontline of Aubemayang - Zaha - Arnautovic. The question after that is whether that is part of a fixed 3-4-3, fixed 4-3-3, or as a flexible formation that can flip between the 2 according to form and fixture.

So basically, what I'm wrestling with is whether the D4 and M4 positions I fill should be players priced at:

      A) 4.0m and 6.5m
      B) 5.5m and 5m
      C) 4.0m and 5m (this option enables 1.5m to be pumped elsewhere in my team

As for ever presents, so far its been Zaha, Salah, Wan-Bassiaka, Robertson, Aubemayang

Funnily enough (given our discussion earlier), I've had the same players since my first draft as you except wan-bassiaka. I've looked at how it could work with Aguero and he hasn't featured simply because I want Auba Arnie Zaha, and the extra 4m goes a long way.

I'm currently on 433 with bench of 5.0m MID 4.5m DEF 4.5m MID.

I currently have Salah but a friend who writes for one of the papers brought up a good point that he may suffer from second season syndrome! As seen in Hazard, Bale and to a lesser extent Ronaldo.

I think every team who play against Liverpool will have two men on Salah. His from deep runs (now known to managers and scouts) will be impacted. The likelihood of him getting injured (see CL final for reference) will be increased.

He's a fantastic player and no doubt....however...think back 12 months and how "essential" Kane was after his previous season, and especially the way he smashed it at the end of that previous season. He actually turned out to be a big fat let down.

    Ederson

van Aanholt - Cédric - Daniels

Mkhitaryan - Sánchez - Richarlison - Salah - Bernardo Silva

    Zaha - Aubameyang

    --------------------------
    Boruc - Alexander-Arnold - Kamara - Wan-Bissaka

    Anywhere I could improve?

Have a good feeling that Bernardo Silva will have a good run the first 3-6 and with the "easy" fixtures I hope Pep will save the players from WC and slowly bring them into the team.

Anyone considering 5 at the back with the amazing value that could be had there this season?

    Lovren(5.0), Bailly(5.5), Laporte(5.5), David Luiz(5.5), Coleman(5.5), Mendy(6.0), Robertson(6.0)

That is potentially a lot of clean sheets and attacking returns.

Even with 6.5m defenders, they outscored those with similar price in mids and strikers. But not many will be convinced to go with 5 at the back. I'm going to start with it though.

Yes, Bailly probably first choice, but Utd are making noises about a new centre back...and they have Smalling/Jones/Lindelof/Rojo all competing for starts as well.

Luiz hopefully the CS will confirm for us.

The other two certainly not comfortable with them starting.

Value is entirely with defs and mids this season. I'm exploiting the budget mids in the first two GWs though, as I don't see many games with clean sheets in first two GWs. Defences need time to settle, too.

I'm sure I'm saying nothing new when I bring up the fact that premium midfielders and mid-high priced defenders offer the best value (PPM, PP£) in FPL - so with that in mind I've put together a 'no premium strikers' team, and whilst the bench is incredibly lightweight, I'd be looking fo the XI to be pretty much set... Obviously if some 4.0/4.5 players become consistent starters that's great.

    Fabianski
    Pereira / Lovren / Ward
    Salah / KDB / Eriksen / Pogba / Mane
    Arnie / Zaha

    Stekelenburg / W-B / Peltier / Kamara

Defense could realistically be any 3x 5.0 defenders, or could even downgrade one of the strikers to bring in a premium defender. And there is so much money in that midfield that if someone like Mahrez, Sterling, Alli, Hazard start to hit form you can swap them in easily.

    1. Mini Mane Mo

As I say, I think those 3 can be anything that equals 15m, but I'd be confident in Liverpool and Burnley getting some CS...

Pogba, KDB will probably miss GW1 at least, I'd get Mahrez and a 6.5-7.5 midfielder (plenty to choose from) and you'll have more money to spend elsewhere

Absolutely, this was more of an experiment to see how the money stretches when it isn't in the frontline. If I seriously considered this for GW1 I'd look to address the few WC problems that are in there.

Have tried to follow etiquette by responding to a few rmts this morning

Anyone care to weigh in on this. First rmt of the season:

    Fab. (Patricio)

Mendy. Pva. Trent. (Cedric. Wan bis)

    Mane. Pedro. Mikhi. Richarlison. (Neves)

    Auba. Frim. Aguero.

    Cheers all comments welcome.

Midfield looks lightweight. I wouldn't invest 11m on Kun. That's my own personal opinion.

Thanks if I can I really want a city triple up for those 6 fixtures early on when then play last years and this years promoted teams.
Downgrade kun to who and upgrade to which city mids for that spell?

Who is the better player from the off?

    A) Mane
    B) Dilva + 1mil

Have Robbo, Salah and Sane already. I'm guessing it depends where the 1mil is invested?

      get both.

I tend to find that loading up on teams talisman players is a good way to do FPL. I remember Siggy at Swansea, Zaha at Palace etc..

Who have you gone for this year?

I'm thinking Richarlison, Arnie, Auba, Salah

Salah obviously. Arnie and Auba I can get behind too. Not sure on Richarlison though? What makes you think he's "talisman" status?

Agree, Auba, Arnie, Eriksen, Sanchez, Rich to start with an eye on getting in KDB and Hazard if he stays.
Also going Azpi from rhe start who is quite talismanic himself!

Morning lads, here's my pretty much first draft with a few tweaks.

    Ederson - 4.0
    Robertson - Bailly(?) - Cedric - Ward - AWB
    Salah - Mane - Pedro - Richarlison - Cairney
    Kun - Arnie - Zaha

Not sure about double Liverpool attack but could work though..

    1. Robson-Canoe
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

Looks solid, It's either double Liv or double City attack (Mahrez/Sane instead of Mane), whatever you prefer
I'm still tossing a coin between Pedro and Jota, will wait for the last friendlies and the Community Shield

    Foster (Fabianski)

Mendy, D Luiz, Daniels (Wan-Bissaka, Malone)

Salah, Sanchez (c), Sane, Ricarlison (Hudson-Odoi)

    Morata, Arni, Zaha
