Schar’s goal threat stands out in Newcastle defence

With the news that Florian Lejeune (£4.5m) is set for an extended period on the sidelines, the arrival of Fabian Schar (£5.0m) on Tyneside is a timely one.

The Swiss centre-back would, barring further recruitment, seem likely to line up alongside Jamaal Lascelles (£5.0m) at the heart of the Newcastle defence this season after Lejeune suffered a cruciate knee ligament in training last week.

Schar has joined the Magpies from Deportivo de La Coruna on a three-year deal after United activated a £3m release clause in the defender’s contract.

The Swiss international, who featured for his country at the 2018 World Cup, will cost Fantasy Premier League managers the same amount of money as Lascelles and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka (£5.0m).

While some FPL bosses will baulk at the starting price, Schar’s record of 21 goals in 180 league appearances (a rate better than a goal every nine matches) would suggest that the 26-year-old centre-half is likely to couple clean sheet points with the occasional attacking return in 2018/19.

We need only look to Lascelles’ returns in 2017/18 for how lucrative a combination that can be: the Newcastle captain’s three goals and nine shut-outs helped him to a total of 116 FPL points, the highest score among defenders in the sub-£5.0m bracket last season.

Schar spoke of his goal threat upon signing for the Magpies last week:

I’m not like a typical defender. I, of course, defend, but I’m quite good with the ball. I like to play, I want to build up the game from behind, and I think that is a strength of mine. I have also scored some headers – that could also be a strength and, hopefully, I can use it here.

The History

Born in December 1991, Schar progressed through the youth ranks of FC Wil 1900 and made his debut for his hometown club in November 2009.

Establishing himself as a first-team regular in the 2010/11 season, Schar was to make 52 league appearances for the second-tier Swiss side before a move to Basel in July 2012.

Having already found the back of the net on nine occasions for Wil, Schar was to score a further nine goals in his three years with Basel.

Winning the Swiss Super League in each of his three seasons with the club, Schar made 73 league appearances for Basel and was part of their side that reached the UEFA Europa League semi-finals in his debut campaign. Basel progressed to the quarter-finals of the same competition the following season and qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League in Schar’s final year in his homeland.

Two years with Hoffenheim followed, although his sophomore season with the Bundesliga club was a frustrating one: Schar made only seven league appearances in 2016/17 before departing for Deportivo in July of last year.

Schar made 25 league starts and scored two goals for the La Liga strugglers, who were relegated to the Spanish second tier at the end of April.

Schar’s goalscoring exploits extend to international level, too: the Swiss centre-back has seven goals in 42 appearances for the national side.

The Prospects

Schar looks set to be the only new addition to a settled back five for Newcastle, with Dubravka, Lascelles, Paul Dummett (£4.5m) and DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) appearing likely to start the season as first choices in their respective positions. Ciaran Clark (£4.5m) is a possible challenger for Schar’s role but didn’t feature in a single league match from early-February onwards and may well be used only as a back-up again in 2018/19.

United’s defence was the best outside of the top seven in 2017/18, and their total of 47 goals conceded was actually four fewer than Arsenal shipped.

The frustration from an FPL point of view was that the Magpies’ decent overall defensive record didn’t always translate into clean sheets. The Gunners, for example, registered four more clean sheets than Newcastle, while West Ham United – who conceded the joint-most goals in the division last season – recorded one more shut-out than Benitez’s side (nine).

Isolating Newcastle’s statistics in the second half of the season – when Dummett had returned from a long injury lay-off and Dubravka had been recruited in the January transfer window – makes for encouraging reading, though.

Six of Newcastle’s clean sheets came from Gameweek 20 onwards, while only three clubs (Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City) conceded fewer goals than the Magpies (18) in their final 19 league fixtures. The top four clubs were the only sides to allow fewer shots on target than Newcastle (68) during this period, meanwhile.

Whether Schar can further bolster that backline remains to be seen. The Swiss international was part of La Liga’s worst defence last season (Deportivo conceded 76 goals), although five of the Spanish side’s six clean sheets came in one of Schar’s 25 league appearances.

Benitez’s ability to organise a back four and improve his defenders individually cannot be underestimated, though: that he transformed an ordinary-looking backline into one of the tightest in the Premier League last season is a testament to his work on the training pitch.

Schar’s total of 203 Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) last season was some 80 short of Lascelles’ total. Even accounting for his reduced pitch-time, Schar’s average of a CBI every 10.9 minutes was worse than that of Lascelles, Clark and Lejeune.

Where Schar could rack up a tidy score on the Bonus Points System is via his tackling. Schar’s net total of 31 successful tackles would have ranked him seventh among Premier League defenders last season and was a far better figure than Newcastle’s next-best stopper (Paul Dummett with 12).

The Swiss international’s passing statistics are another possible path to bonus points, with Schar having averaged 37.8 passes per match last season and completing 80.2% of them. Why this is relevant is that FPL assets who attempt at least 30 passes in a match get two, four or six BPS points if they complete 70, 80 or 90% of their passes respectively.

Schar’s main draw, however, is his attacking threat. No United defender was involved in as many goals as Schar last season (four – two goals, two assists), while his total of 18 attempts on goal was more than any of Newcastle’s backline managed.

Newcastle’s new recruit averaged an attempt on goal every 123.3 minutes for Deportivo last season, a better rate than any of United’s other defenders; Lascelles, by way of example, only registered a shot every 244 minutes.

The Magpies’ run of fixtures from now till early October (Benitez’s side play five of the “big six” in the first eight Gameweeks) are wretched and will likely deter much investment until the second international break at the earliest. After this point, however, Newcastle enjoy a sequence of ten matches in which they do not play any of last season’s top six clubs. Gameweek 9 could, therefore, be the time to take a punt on the Swiss international.

    Bottomed, reposting.

Can we have a discussion about 6.5 forwards without involving the 7.0s?

King - Seems fairly nailed in an attacking side. But mostly plays number 10 instead of up top. Great fixtures. Potentially on penalties.

Wood - Great stats from last season. Highest PPM of the 6.5s. Played significantly less than the other 6.5 options because of injury but still got a similar season score. Very good fixtures. Burnley arent really an attacking or high scoring side though, so you would be relying on Wood to involve himself in the 1 or 2 goals they score at most.

Perez - The top scoring 6.5 from last season with a great finish to the season. Awful fixtures to start. Newcastle seem a real shambles right now. Assess and consider him around GW 9 if NEW look decent probably.

Murray - Just doesnt excite, but kept producing points steadily last season. Brighton have poor fixtures. He might get more service than last season with Jahabakhsh arriving.

Mitrovic - Relatively unknown, playing for a newly promoted side. Good stats from the championship but failed to impress last time he played in the PL. I would wait and see.

Chicharito - Too rotation prone as of now.

    Benteke - No

Im leading towards Wood or King right now. Wood seems to have the best stats, but in a defensive side it doesnt feel very exciting to own him. King probably has a higher ceiling but more variance as well. Perez could be great once the fixtures clear unless Newcastle have imploded by then. What do you guys think?

I think this is a very valid topic

I'm considering both King and Wood for my 3rd position upfront leaning towards King

This would give me a frontline of King, Zaha, Arnie

I think Wood is the best option out of them. 10 goals in 20 games in his first season was quite impressive. Burnley's fixtures are incredibly enticing also. My only slight worry is possible rotation now that Burnley have made a 16 million bid for Jay Rodriguez. That would leave Burnley with 4 good striker options: Wood, Vokes, Barnes and Rodriguez.

Perez- fixtures are awful and Newcastle are a mess right now

Murray- Not sure he has the legs anymore and doesnt excite me either

Mitrovic- I like but its a wait and see for me in terms of how Fulham play with all their new signings

What are your thoughts on Gray of Watford at the 6 price bracket? Watford's opening 3 fixtures are very nice and he has been scoring frequently in pre season. Ings could also be a gem if he completes his move to Palace with his price at only 5.5.

Trying to make my team as resilient as I can against hits, so for me Watford's 3 game streak is too short for me to consider Gray. Im very likely to make a double transfer after game week 2 to get in Hazard/KDB so I dont want any other known issues hanging over my team around that time.

Watford seem like a very low scoring side too.

We play 4-4-2 and JayRod would be nailed on for one of those spots.
Wood & Vokes and to and extent Barnes are similar tall players. Wood though is by far the favorite and the best No9.
If JayRod signs a front two of Jay playing just behind Wood would be the most likely outcome and I think making Wood an ever better prospect with the added quality alongside.

None interest me, best two are Wood (Europe rotation puts me off) and King (Wilson and Defoe and his injury record puts me off) - the only reason to get them over Arnie and Zaha is if its for third spot next to Arnie and Zaha

I am on King. Explosiveness and the right fixtures.

Actually a King Arnautovic Zaha strikeforce is the best that there has been for sub 7,5 players for ever.
If you wanna spend on midfield and defense, this is the season to do so but I'll probably go 6,5 7 11 in attack and have a potential Kane update in mind, which would otherwise only work in a Salah downgrade scenario

Benteke has been terrible ever since he left Villa. His confidence looks to be completely shot and he can't seem to hit a barn door from five yards out. I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.

Championship players regularly play 8 games more than Premier League (720 more minutes). Dyche said this years ago around time they got promoted when ask about rotation that it rarely bothers him to play pretty much same line up week in week out has they play more games in same time period.

Originally I had Auba, Arnie & Wood but have since moved to Aguero, Lacazette & Kamara.

Contemplating a rejig to a 6.5 forward because of the number of options and if one starts well it’ll be a challenge to get them in quickly in my current setup. Thinking Wood because of fixtures, while monitoring Mitrovic.

Peltier wasn't always starting last season, so even though he's likelier to play than all other 4M's, he's not nailed on.
Wan-Bissaka has made the spot his but he's only a bad performance away from being dropped.

TL;DR = In the long term, both are risks. You should at least have one solid nailed-on defender on the bench.

Which Spurs defender would you start with out of,

          A. Sanchez - most nailed
          B. Bavies - probably playing first couple at centre back
          C. Aurier - great stats and having a great pre season

A - check out the stats Mane's better than Bobby's if you factor in extra goal points and cleansheet points, as for Miki he could be rotated and Zaha is the Palace talisman

Yeah sensible points and probably going with it. I'm just not loving Zaha, he is more of a winger to me, while Mkhi would give me an Arsenal attacker. Also think Firmino is on pens? (although Mane has taken them in preseason, but Firmino hasn't played)

On the topic of 6.5 forwards, Pedro Alcacer leading the line for Watford would be very interesting.

We’ve allegedly been targeting him for a while now, and there’s strong talk today of a two-year loan deal happening if the player can agree terms.

I assume you mean Paco Alcacer (of Barcelona)?

If true, would be quite a coup for Watford.

              Sorry yes, excuse predictive text.

Yes it would be a coup but we are hopeful because of having a Spanish Head Coach and Deulofeu.

Watford’s last away goal was early January. That’s a run of 9 without a goal, including all the away games under Gracia.

              We desperately need something!

I'd always go with the set option with a permanent bencher whether it's a 5.5 or a 5. Nailing a rotation especially with attacking players is not the easiest.

Depends on who would that 5.5 be.

I myself don't fancy any of them particularly, so I think I'd rather go with Cairney and Hughes.

At 36% TSB - second of all players in the game - Firmino seems to be a much less popular pick on FFS than he is elsewhere.

            • 7 Years
            5 years, 9 months ago

I'd add a C to TSB. Meaning "casuals".

Not that Firmino per se is a bad option, but TSB don't mean that much to me

It should do, in my opinion. You're most certainly right, in that a lot of that % is made up of casuals or auto-fills. But if Firmino scores a hatty in GW1 and you don't own him, casual or not, you'll be looking at £1m+ ranking due to the sheer number of teams who have him.

He's a good option but awkwardly priced as a striker for future moves.

If you want Lukaku you need to make 2 moves and if you want to downgrade you're wasting funds or a second transfer

            Wood the best 6.5 stirker?
            - He's a bonus points magnet - last season he got 20 bonus points in 1621 mins. In comparison, Aguero got 22 pts in 1960 mins and Lukaku 18 pts in 2866 mins. Burnley don't score that many goals, so he's likely to get bonus points whenever he scores.
            - He's probably on penalties. Last season Burnley didn't have any penalties in the PL, but Wood took Burnley's only penalty of the season (in the League Cup). Their main penalty taker used to be Vokes, whose place in the first team has been taken by Wood.
            - Even if Burnley get to the EL, that doesn't necessarily mean that Wood will be rotated in the PL. I'm sure Dyche will prioritize a decent finish in the Premier League rather than trying to win the EL, which seems very unlikely for Burnley.
            - His fixtures look pretty good - sou, WAT, ful, MUN, wol, BOU, car, HUD
            - This doesn't matter too much, but he's consistent both home and away, scoring almost the same amounts of points at home and away in a similar number of minutes last season.

Interesting, until now I thought King and Mitrovic were the best 6.5

Don't have anything to back it up but I vaguely remember both him and Barnes being machines towards the end of last season in terms of minutes played.

I remember my rival having, I think, Wood, and thinking he must get rested in the next game a number of times, but he never did.

I know its not much to go on, but it makes me a little more confident over him in terms of the EL rotation risk.

If I am in desperate need of 0.5 I'd definitely consider downgrading a 7, but he's at an awkward price point for me

For me it's a decision between Zaha + Peltier vs Wood + Bamba, as I already have Arnautovic - and Tosun has looked unconvincing in pre-season.

Zaha's adjusted PPM last season is almost the same as Wood's, and Wood actually scored 1 more goal than Zaha did in 928 less mins (but obviously had 6 less assists). I don't think Zaha will fare that well in terms of BPS even as a striker, because he misses a lot of chances and gets dispossesed a lot.

Peltier was not actually nailed on last season - he was rotated in several games, while Bamba's CBI stats are quite good and I won't have to worry about him being dropped out the first 11 when I need to call on him.

From a choice of those 2 pairs, I'd agree.

I like Wood as a pick, and he's definitely drifted through my team a number of times, but he is competing with Arnie for a place in my team and I don't think I can make that change.

Ideally, I'd love to have him as a 3rd striker, but that would mean switching to a 3-4-3 from 3-5-2, and I'm not fond of the cheap mids.

Do you have any thoughts on Fraser? Bit off topic, but I was looking at him earlier.

I'm guessing you have a premium striker up front, because I've got both Wood + Arnie up front in a 3-5-2 with my only cheap mid being Richarlison (and if I switched to a 3-4-3 then that would still be the case).

Regarding Fraser, he looks very threatening when he plays but a 5.5m mid is somebody you're going to be starting every week (I presume) so I wouldn't want someone who is a rotation risk.

Laca + Arnie for me atm, but monitoring the rotation risk with Laca.

5.5 mid is right on that boundary for me for being "bench worthy". Its the one place I'm struggling to make a decision on, but I might end up dropping a 6.5mid down to cheap to free up money to make my 3rd forward wood and swtich formations.

Currently the only 6.5mid I'm happy with is Richarlison, but I'll need 2 unless I free up cash to upgrade one...

You've given me a lot to think about 😉

Can't see Laca doing much in the first two games, although I do think he'll be preferred to Mkhi in the starting line-up. What does the rest of your team look like atm?

                                  Still being tinkered with tbh.

Bego / Ryan rotation in goal.
Coleman, PVA, Robbo backline, with (Wan B and Cedric) adequate backup
Salah Mane DSilva Richarlison Pedro across the middle, even though I'm really not sure about Pedro
                                  Laca Arnie (Sorloth)

Not happy with a number of the players there, but won't touch it until after the community shield. Starting to draw up a watchlist of potential players that could fit in, whilst still trying to minimise rotation risk.

Also have the strange feeling of wanting to tell myself to not post RMTs on this article 😉

The home/away consistency is interesting. Intuitively it just feels bad to have a BUR attacker when they play away.

Yeah, even though they were the only team last season to do better away rather than at home.
They picked up 28 pts in away games, scoring 20 goals, while picking up 26 pts at home and scoring 16 goals at home.

They scored as many away goals as Arsenal did (which doesn't say much since we were terrible away from home last season) and 1 more than Bournemouth did.

In other Watford related news today, Doucoure has signed a new 5 year deal.

Player of the season last year. Valued at 6.0 in FPL and heavily linked with several big clubs (and Everton lol) this summer.

And Deeney is staying put, and not off to Cardiff as had been rumoured.
