Chelsea and Manchester City meet in the FA Community Shield today and there is plenty for Fantasy Premier League managers to be keeping their eye on.

In fact, Fantasy enthusiasts couldn’t have hand-picked two better teams to look at in a competitive setting before the Gameweek 1 deadline.

With plenty still up in the air for both clubs, this is a perfect opportunity for some Fantasy research ahead of the 2018/19 season.

WINGING IT

There will be a lot of interest in midfielders Pedro (£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.5m) today, as managers await a potentially cost-saving route into the Chelsea attack.

The pair have started all of Chelsea’s pre-season matches so far on the flanks of the front three, either side of Alvaro Morata (£9.0m) and, by all accounts, have impressed hugely.

Pedro has two goals to his name in three matches while Hudson-Odoi (one assist) has been deemed the best performer of Chelsea’s pre-season so far.

The absences of Eden Hazard (£10.5m) and Willian (£7.5m), and their potential departures before the transfer window closes, leaves a huge opportunity in this area of the team for Pedro and Hudson-Odoi. If they can take it, then Fantasy managers will be very pleased with the money they could save on these two exciting options.

But there is even more to pay attention to in the wide areas for today’s match. FPL defender Victor Moses (£6.0m) has now been used as a second-half substitute on the right of the forward line twice in pre-season, creating serious potential for him to be a powerful out-of-position option.

The only reason he has not started a match yet is because of his extended World Cup leave, so it is entirely possible that he could feature from the beginning in an attacking position at Wembley today. If that happens, he could quickly become the most popular Chelsea defender in FPL…

GOALONSO?

…But the most fashionable Chelsea stoppers right now are Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.5m). Over 16 percent of managers have backed one of these as they prepare to line-up as the full-backs at Stamford Bridge this season.

The scrapping of the 3-4-3 wing-back system by new manager Maurizio Sarri has the potential to change the output of both of these premium players which is why it will be good to see them in action as more traditional full-backs in a 4-3-3.

Crucially, we need to see whether or not either of them have as much license to get forward, as they have done in previous seasons.

If the pair are afforded that against Man City today then we know that £6.5m is a price worth paying; if not, then it might make sense to look elsewhere.

The cheaper David Luiz (£5.5m) looks like he’ll be a regular at centre-back at the beginning of the season and, as we’ve already alluded to, Moses could even offer more advanced positions than Alonso and Azpilicueta for £0.5m less.

THE MAHREZ SHOW

Pep Guardiola revealed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) would be fit to compete in the Community Shield.

This is a big boost for Fantasy managers who were hoping to tap into his apparent monopoly on a starting place in the early part of the season. As one of a few first-team players at Man City who did not take part in this summer’s World Cup, the Algerian may well get several weeks without rotation from Guardiola, which will be important given the fixtures on offer. The only ones not back in training yet are Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m), leaving the door open for Mahrez to play.

We think he’ll probably play in the midfield but it is even a possibility that he could play in a forward’s role within a 3-5-2 system. Either way, we should pay close attention to Mahrez today and see where he might slot into City’s system.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is the more likely of City’s natural centre-forwards to start as he played fewer minutes with Argentina than Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) did with Brazil in Russia.

It’s also worth monitoring Leroy Sané’s (£9.5m) involvement today. It was believed he would be an important asset to own for Gameweek 1 having missed out on a place in Germany’s World Cup squad, but he is still yet to make a start for City this summer and Guardiola recently revealed he had a lot of work to do to get fit for the new season.

ON THE MENDY

Right now the defensive picture at Man City looks very unclear, and the Community Shield will be an important indicator of who will line-up at Arsenal in Gameweek 1.

At this current point in time perhaps the only player at this end of the pitch we can be confident will get game-time is goalkeeper Ederson (£5.5m), simply because he did not feature in Brazil’s World Cup campaign.

Outside of that, it becomes pure conjecture to try and piece together a predicted starting line-up, as only Guardiola knows what state his defensive assets are in.

The fact that Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) was in the training squad for the pre-season tour has proved not quite as encouraging as first thought, because the Frenchman was not involved in any matches in the USA. In terms of competition, England man Kyle Walker (£6.5m) left Russia with an injury and Danilo (£5.5m) is still carrying the knock he picked up with Brazil. Fabian Delph (£5.5m) was another training late-comer. Perhaps Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) could feature on one flank but Mendy may still have to play on the other.

As for centre-backs, Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) picked up an injury on tour, while John Stones (£5.5m), Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) and Vincent Kompany (£5.5m) have only recently returned to training.

TOO SOON?

Given the special circumstances of this Community Shield match, it is entirely possible that it counts for less than it normally would when predicting Gameweek 1 line-ups.

Ultaimtely, neither one of Guardiola or Sarri wants to be preparing a full first-team for this fixture, with so many important figures affected by the World Cup.

In fact, the City manager said on Friday: “We would prefer to be in another situation but I think Maurizio Sarri is the same. It is what it is, we will adapt and play with guys in better condition. I think we have six substitutes too so everybody will be involved but maybe 90 minutes will not be possible.”

That could indicate that there may well be players who aren’t considered ready for the Community Shield but may become available for the trip to Arsenal in the next week. Accordingly, just because a player is given preference in a position this weekend, does not mean he will hold onto his starting berth the following week.

That’s why Guardiola and Sarri’s press conferences next week could be even more important than this first match of the 2018/19 English season – although it will still be good to witness the return of competitive action for two top-flight teams.

I've been noticing Pedro in a lot of drafts on here. He isn't as nailed as you'd think, I'm expecting him to have a sporadic squad role at best. Don't be fooled by his goals in pre-season.

We get too hung up fixtures I think. Best not to know them.

Home/Away rotation has been known to be pretty worthless for a while now. The strength of a fixture is only an indicator and quite often gets given far too much importance.

All 3 will be favourites to score for there respected teams. And king and Arnie are cheap. This means a juicer midfield and defence while having 3 decent strikers. Very very naughty.

From last year, who was the most popular 4.0 defender and points (maybe ending price?)

-- just to get a gauge on it a bit, as someone else noted for CH-Odoi that there are a lot of nailed players in pre-season that disappear once the season starts. I guess this is why I ask regarding this years popular bench fodder/hopeful starters that the 4 is completely wasted and 4.5 makes all the difference.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

With GW1 now less than a week away, what are the problem spots in your team?

Are you undecided on whether to go big or rotate with your GKs?

Have you not decided your formation?

Are you struggling with which premium forward(s) to go for?

I'm really struggling to decide between budget forwards (6.0-7.0), but I'll likely be going with two. I also can't decide what to do about City coverage, or which 4.5m midfielder to go for.

What is causing you the most trouble?

Will you have a premium forward? Or just the two budget options? One iteration of my team had Zaha, Arnie and a bench fodder, now I have Firmino, Arnie and a bench fodder.

I've always previously gone with 3-5-2, but for the opening weeks I'm going with 4-4-2, with two City in defence and no city in attack.

It's been difficult but I'm really pleased with the balance of my team at the moment. Salah's price (auto captain) and the risk around the WC returners (and new managers) has made it easier to spread the money around. So I am currently in a 4-3-3:

      Patricio

      VVD Luiz Mendy Mee

      Richarlison Salah Mane

      Morata Aguero King

      4.0 Costa Stephens AWB

      - 3 Liverpool forwards vs. A defender & 2 forwards

Chelsea if it happens or Foster for an early WC team.

        Defender (robbo/taa) and 2 attackers

Defence yes, I'd skip on Sanchez at that cost.

Go back 4 since Austin isn't nailed. I'm on 343 with King third froward though.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 16 Years

The lure of Mané, Firmino, Salah is strong though. You have nearly half of your attacking slots categorically guaranteed to be involved in serious amounts of goals each week. Their attack is as good as if not better than man city’s This year, and we are presented with an unheard of opportunity to get nailed attackers for just over 30m.

I think sacrificing a defender may be worth it in this case. Although VVD was always in my team up until a few days ago.

Sanchez hasn’t the advantage of being swappable to KDB who I want long term but is t ready yet, meanwhile Sanchez has a beautiful fixture and a bit of (preseason) form behind him and has 16 pointers in him if he can get a performance. Leicester missing Vardy & Maguire too...

Austin is a conundrum too. If he’s fit he’s as good as if not better than pretty much every premium defender. But it’s such a big if!

    10. Jafalad
      • 16 Years
      8 years, 29 days ago

TS mentioned that premium defenders scored more points than budget midfielders.
Yet my D is essentially VVD and four ubers.

Should I be looking to add a couple of 5.5-6.0 ds and boot the likes of Richarlison et al?

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 16 Years
        8 years, 29 days ago

Premium defs do generall look strong in the end of season standings each year.

        A 6.0 def with 150 points for example vs a 6.5 mid with 135 or 140 etc.

But you have to also consider fixtures. As that 6.0 def’s 140 is no good to you if 100 of his points come in GW20-38.

So it’s not as simple as just saying premium defenders are better value, although that statement is true if going on a season long basis.

But you have 38 free transfers, two wildcards, and 3 chips to maximise your point score. So premium defs for GW1 could totally ruin your start IF you pick the wrong ones.

        TLDR: Timing is key!

How can you know which weeks the points will come? With minor teams it's a lottery, but with the big teams it's more predictable and secure. Last year United kept clean sheets in 50% of their games with City close behind. I expect Liverpool to match that this time and maybe Chelsea much tighter. I've got 5 defenders from those 4 clubs. I'm pretty confident in good hauls early, mid and late in the season.

I think we need to see some games first and see some form from the cheap attackers (mids and fwds) from the smaller teams. Then it should be possible to match up their form with good fixture runs and generate returns that match or exceed a clean sheet every few games from a premium defender.

For GW1 I’ve got City gk plus defenders from Pool, United, Chelsea and Spurs, going with reliable picks to start with and will wait a couple of games to see which budget defenders od attackers stand out from the crowd

That’s why I’m starting with 4 defenders: VVD - Bavis -Luiz - Bailly. 5.0M defs don’t hold value. Will wait and see which 4.5M becomes hot commodity, this season’s Hegazi

The fixtures question applies to every position though. What can you go on other than season long performance?
Also, if you start with 4 defs at 4.5 upgrading to 3x6.0 becomes tricky.
Premium defenders is definitely my thorniest problem right now, in fact defenders in general.
I'm struggling to find quality defenders in teams that might keep a lot of clean sheets and don't take up attacking spots.
If only I were allowed 7 Liverpool players I'd be ok

bench fodder costs 4m for def, 4.5 mid so you cant just say 6.0 v 6.0
& filling a defence with premium defenders who will actually score over 150+ is very difficult,
whereas flipping around one/two 6~7 mids for 150 is usually easier.

I think it’s how you spread your final ~27m over 2mids and 2fwds. Common scenarios are:

      6.5x2 + 7x2 = 27
      6.5+9.5+7+4.5 = 27.5
      6.5x2 + 9.5+4.5 = 27

Or to go cheaper at the back so I can afford mahrez instead of 6.5m mid (jota)

I’m going big at the back as I think there will be a couple of 6.5 miss that will eventually reveal themselves as the best options. I’m staying away from city mids until everyone returns and people start looking nailed. Probably KDB eventually

No problems, just some questions that have to be adressed.

      -going with/without a premium (9+) striker
      - going 3 or 4 at the back
      - finding the cheapest playing bench -> lack of 4.5 options in attack and midfield.

The Goalkeeper is my main issue.

I'm favouring a set and forget option at the minute and ideally I'd like a nailed Burnley goalkeeper. I'm hoping to make it to the second international break before wildcarding so Patricio isn't really an option for me. De Gea is the standout, but where does the extra 1m come from? Zaha to Wilson? PvA to Tomkins? or even Zaha and PvA to King and Sakho?

I just can't decide who I want and think I'll probably end up with a Patricio/Foster rotation at the minute, which doesn't fill me with confidence.

Few issues, with king doing king things yesterday and those opening fixtures is he better than 6.5m options in midfield therefore opening the door to 3-4-3.

I prefer 3-5-2/4-4-2 hybrid currently due to how I can open up funds from the likes of mahrez, mane.

Second problem is at the back and whether to go

      1) robbo,azpi,tomkins,cook,jags
      OR
      2) robbo,luiz,wan bisaka,cook,mendy

I have to avoid Kun for this reason.

Mahrez looks the lowest risk though considering sterling’s not back yet, and Sané didn’t get a huge volume of preseason action. And also he’s slightly cheaper than sterling/Sané.

Bilva or Dilva could be great value, but they’re just too much of a lottery for minutes.

KDB better be back soon, he’s my go to city coverage.

Not owning the most expensive player until Gw4 is now a differential.

Repeating last season is not going to be easy and will likely turn out to be a one season wonder.

Seriously considering going without both Kane and Salad tbf.

Salah will need to better last season for the value but I will have to get him in at some point anyway because of ownership.

Kane rarely starts with massive numbers.

Looking at a BB Gw1 with 15 nailed decent mid priced picks.

Wc Gw4 or before after more info and prospects.

Ownership only dictates whether you should own someone if they're the best option. Salah doesn't need to score as much as last season to be worth it, provided he's on average the best captain option and there don't emerge a number of mids who hugely overshadow him in value.

I've tried something different this year - I've put the numbers from FFS's Rate My Team tool into a program I wrote to find the best possible team (assuming no transfers and that the strongest team in a valid formation plays each GW). Here's the latest result for the first six GWs:

    Ederson/Foster
    Robertson/Azpi/Bednarek/Walker/Mendy
    Salah/Sanchez/Fraser/Jorginho/McDonald
    Firminho/Austin/Arnie

Projected to average just under 58pts per GW.

First reaction - Triple Man City defence? Not what I would go for, and I think Sanchez should be downgraded to free up funds for the rest of the midfield. Ederson/Foster also seems like a waste of 0.5. I'm going to see how it does against my own team though...

Clearly the RMT ticker over values Gk + Defenders. Don’t think anyone in their right mind would spend that much on def. would be interesting to see how it performs. Will you be making the ‘most value add’ transfer each week also?

          This.

We try not to fill our teams with average mids and forwards tho dont we.
only 1 out the top 10 points last season were to be found in defence - just sayin.

I'm going to try and build transfers into it, but it's really difficult - it has to decide if it's worth taking a hit, (and if so, how big), as well as which players to select. If I have time, I'll put some results up before the start of GW2.

If you get it right its worth a hit in multiple positions most weeks. I'd limit it to just 1 transfer a week, as reality is hits are rarely that good.

    4. Ginkapo FPL

Its a quirk of the RMT approach. The highest value players are always defenders so it makes the case for spendy high at the back, Robertson, Azpi, Walker, Mendy with Ederson, matched with a strong captain pick in Salah, surrounded by cheapies.

Its really wierd that it chose Sanchez though. I thought Firmino was the only reasonably high priced attacker to be shown as good value also.

that is weird, since Sanchez was pretty poor value last season on most metrics. Also, Firmino is quite far down the list of best value attackers in terms of both value added per million and points per match per million.
