Chelsea and Manchester City meet in the FA Community Shield today and there is plenty for Fantasy Premier League managers to be keeping their eye on.

In fact, Fantasy enthusiasts couldn’t have hand-picked two better teams to look at in a competitive setting before the Gameweek 1 deadline.

With plenty still up in the air for both clubs, this is a perfect opportunity for some Fantasy research ahead of the 2018/19 season.

WINGING IT

There will be a lot of interest in midfielders Pedro (£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.5m) today, as managers await a potentially cost-saving route into the Chelsea attack.

The pair have started all of Chelsea’s pre-season matches so far on the flanks of the front three, either side of Alvaro Morata (£9.0m) and, by all accounts, have impressed hugely.

Pedro has two goals to his name in three matches while Hudson-Odoi (one assist) has been deemed the best performer of Chelsea’s pre-season so far.

The absences of Eden Hazard (£10.5m) and Willian (£7.5m), and their potential departures before the transfer window closes, leaves a huge opportunity in this area of the team for Pedro and Hudson-Odoi. If they can take it, then Fantasy managers will be very pleased with the money they could save on these two exciting options.

But there is even more to pay attention to in the wide areas for today’s match. FPL defender Victor Moses (£6.0m) has now been used as a second-half substitute on the right of the forward line twice in pre-season, creating serious potential for him to be a powerful out-of-position option.

The only reason he has not started a match yet is because of his extended World Cup leave, so it is entirely possible that he could feature from the beginning in an attacking position at Wembley today. If that happens, he could quickly become the most popular Chelsea defender in FPL…

GOALONSO?

…But the most fashionable Chelsea stoppers right now are Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.5m). Over 16 percent of managers have backed one of these as they prepare to line-up as the full-backs at Stamford Bridge this season.

The scrapping of the 3-4-3 wing-back system by new manager Maurizio Sarri has the potential to change the output of both of these premium players which is why it will be good to see them in action as more traditional full-backs in a 4-3-3.

Crucially, we need to see whether or not either of them have as much license to get forward, as they have done in previous seasons.

If the pair are afforded that against Man City today then we know that £6.5m is a price worth paying; if not, then it might make sense to look elsewhere.

The cheaper David Luiz (£5.5m) looks like he’ll be a regular at centre-back at the beginning of the season and, as we’ve already alluded to, Moses could even offer more advanced positions than Alonso and Azpilicueta for £0.5m less.

THE MAHREZ SHOW

Pep Guardiola revealed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) would be fit to compete in the Community Shield.

This is a big boost for Fantasy managers who were hoping to tap into his apparent monopoly on a starting place in the early part of the season. As one of a few first-team players at Man City who did not take part in this summer’s World Cup, the Algerian may well get several weeks without rotation from Guardiola, which will be important given the fixtures on offer. The only ones not back in training yet are Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m), leaving the door open for Mahrez to play.

We think he’ll probably play in the midfield but it is even a possibility that he could play in a forward’s role within a 3-5-2 system. Either way, we should pay close attention to Mahrez today and see where he might slot into City’s system.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is the more likely of City’s natural centre-forwards to start as he played fewer minutes with Argentina than Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) did with Brazil in Russia.

It’s also worth monitoring Leroy Sané’s (£9.5m) involvement today. It was believed he would be an important asset to own for Gameweek 1 having missed out on a place in Germany’s World Cup squad, but he is still yet to make a start for City this summer and Guardiola recently revealed he had a lot of work to do to get fit for the new season.

ON THE MENDY

Right now the defensive picture at Man City looks very unclear, and the Community Shield will be an important indicator of who will line-up at Arsenal in Gameweek 1.

At this current point in time perhaps the only player at this end of the pitch we can be confident will get game-time is goalkeeper Ederson (£5.5m), simply because he did not feature in Brazil’s World Cup campaign.

Outside of that, it becomes pure conjecture to try and piece together a predicted starting line-up, as only Guardiola knows what state his defensive assets are in.

The fact that Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) was in the training squad for the pre-season tour has proved not quite as encouraging as first thought, because the Frenchman was not involved in any matches in the USA. In terms of competition, England man Kyle Walker (£6.5m) left Russia with an injury and Danilo (£5.5m) is still carrying the knock he picked up with Brazil. Fabian Delph (£5.5m) was another training late-comer. Perhaps Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) could feature on one flank but Mendy may still have to play on the other.

As for centre-backs, Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) picked up an injury on tour, while John Stones (£5.5m), Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) and Vincent Kompany (£5.5m) have only recently returned to training.

TOO SOON?

Given the special circumstances of this Community Shield match, it is entirely possible that it counts for less than it normally would when predicting Gameweek 1 line-ups.

Ultaimtely, neither one of Guardiola or Sarri wants to be preparing a full first-team for this fixture, with so many important figures affected by the World Cup.

In fact, the City manager said on Friday: “We would prefer to be in another situation but I think Maurizio Sarri is the same. It is what it is, we will adapt and play with guys in better condition. I think we have six substitutes too so everybody will be involved but maybe 90 minutes will not be possible.”

That could indicate that there may well be players who aren’t considered ready for the Community Shield but may become available for the trip to Arsenal in the next week. Accordingly, just because a player is given preference in a position this weekend, does not mean he will hold onto his starting berth the following week.

That’s why Guardiola and Sarri’s press conferences next week could be even more important than this first match of the 2018/19 English season – although it will still be good to witness the return of competitive action for two top-flight teams.

Do you guys think Naby Keita can match or come close to matching Mane or Firmino? He has a decent goalscoring record, 12, 8 and 6. Should feature in the bonus points if he scores or assists.

    1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…

I think he'll be good value, but maybe not matching the front three. I could see a 140 ish point season.

He's got a few assists in pre-season too - will definitely consider him once the Arsenal/Chelsea/Spurs attacks become clearer but think going with at least two of Mane/Salah/Firmino is vital at the start of the season

No afraid not prob chip in with 5 - 7 goals and a handful of assists but main points will be from front 3....140+ points return imo.

They were so solid towards the end of last season I can't resist Robbo from the start. Sane and Aguero taking up the remaining expensive spots at the moment, but expecting to be burnt by rotation at some point

Yes, that's why I'm avoiding City attack for now. And yes, I would like to Liverpool defence - indeed, yesterday I had VVD in my team with Sane instead of Firmino.

I would be on B, as I am not convinced by Arnie's fixtures. However I prefer Mane to Firmino, so of the 4 players you mention, I would clearly be on Mane and Richarlison.

      Cheers

I fear the casuals having Arnie though. He's normally a tasty differential so it will be even more frustrating if he goes on a hot streak at the start of the season

          I see your point. Valid!

I see a greater potential on Zaha for instance, but Arnie can be a positive surprise despite horrible fixtures, we never know.

          Currently my front 7:
          Salah; Mane; Eriksen; Richarlison; Costa
          Kun; Zaha

            • 16 Years
            8 years, 29 days ago

Fair - so many unknowns with Zaha at the moment that I'm steering clear for now. I think going:
            Salah Mane Sane Costa Hughes
            King Aguero Arnie

and then switching to Arsenal/Chelsea/Spurs assets one their setups become clearer

That seems a very conving front 7 mate.

If Mahrez looks nailed and fit I would consider him in and Eriksen out. And yes, from GW3 onwards clearly I'll try to bring Arsenal assets to my team.

Love the Salah-Mane duo by the way

    Ederson
    Shaw Robertson Luiz Davies
    Richarlison Salah Pedro
    Arnie Aguero Aubameyang

I know I’ve posted my team but this isn’t a rate my team, my question is:

Do you think it’s viable to go with a cheap midfield if you’ve gone big in defence and forwards or is it too risky ?

      Good question mate.

Personally I think this year the midfield will be the highest scoring and highest potential sector, to be honest. However I also consider that there are great "cheap" options - Pedro is a good example, if he is nailed then I think your midfield is good.

Shaw will start the season? Davies at 6.0 and as a CB does not bring me much enthusiasm, I have to say

You'd be missing out. The best value is in premium defence followed, imo, in premium defence. I'd cut down on the strikeforce myself.

Ideal realistic FPL midfield if all are fit & available.

    Salah, KDB, Eriksen, Ozil, Pogba

I would Wildcard to this if circumstances arose

LOL, there is no way 13, 10.5, 9.5, 8.5, 8 is a realistic midfield. Build a team around that and see what the outcome is.

You are sacrificing in three areas of your team to have one strong area. Accept the L and move on.

In the scenario presented (which is all are fit & available) you are filling 5 of your 7 attacking slots with good quality, good value players who can generate points from goals, assists, and clean sheets. Accept and move on

Jota is 21 and Richarlison is 21. I think Pedro plays max 3 games with Willian and Hazard returning. I just don't get why no one looks at Maddison.

Jota scored 17 and had 5 assists and created 49 chances and had 44 key passes.
Madisson scored 14 and had 8 assists and created 120 chances and had 112 key passes.

I’m keeping a close eye on Maddison. He is ultimately coming in to play the Mahrez role, but for only 6.5. Apparently he is a set piece specialist & as you say he was very productive in the championship.

I could see him being heavily involved in most goals Leicester score.. the question is just how many goals they will score!

Potentially a very good FPL pick imo

I'd expect Haz and Zaha to flank the centre forward, Morata. It should knock Pedro to the bench.

I had 3 Chelsea players, Azpi, Luiz and Pedro, then got Zaha in when I heard - 4 players! But I lost Pedro since you don't want both him and Wilf.

Understood. Yeah, 75M is huge ahah.

I'll keep Zaha on my team.

Appreciate the info and suggestions mate

Hudson-Odoi. If the kid has another stunning performance he will be my fifth mid and in my starting lineup in GW1

If he does well tonight, you consider he can be nailed GW1-GW3?

I hope so, but if they get Zaha and Hazard returns it is not looking great 😛

Will watch this Hudson-Odoi kid for the first time, see what all the fuss is about

Moses is also of interest, plus Azpi/Alonso, see whether they get any attacking done

He did make Bellerin look like a Vanarama National League defender 😉 😀

Isn't H-O a place-holder for Haz? He isn't going to have Eden sat on the bench, so he gets 2 games max.

          Yeah, I know.

But if Hazard goes to Madrid, Chelsea would have to move pretty quickly to get in Zaha or someone as replacement before the Thursday deadline.

Yes, that's certainly possible. Unless Zaha's moved on the private assurance he'll be playing alongside Haz. We'll know by Thursday anyway.

Neves seems to have scored a few screamers last season. Is he very defensive midfielder?
Is he better value to jota?

His value is more as a set-piece taker.
Difficult to say if his value is better - FPL Towers works out the prices pretty damn well!

He is a DM, and apparently is also a card magnet. But has some set pieces & has a penchant for scoring from long range as you say

Neves is on set poeces and pens but apparently not 100% nailed for the spot kicks, he missed one in the last pre-season game, Jota listed as midfielder playing in front 3 and carrying bigger attacking threat

Yeh, but 1.5m is a significant difference. For 6.5 you will start him every week. For 5m you'll rotate him on and off your bench.

Why isnt Siggy making more noise in that 6 to 8m category? Nailed, looks like he will have monopoly of set pieces. Could take pens. Huge creative force. As far as Marco Silva comes with more goals and he has shown a history of doing so, I could see him outscoring the likes of Richarlisom and Jota and maybe even Mhki

Because Richarlison and Walcott are 1m cheaper. Simple.

he is more expensive than all 3 of those.

He's done well previously but last season he was poor when he played. Everton whilst a new manager may struggle again at first. It's not so easy to suddenly change playing style but he maybe a good pick as the season progresses

Last season putting people off. Personally think he'll be the top scoring mid below 8m

Watching the highlights of the last game, I thought Richarlison, Walcott and Tosun looked much better

Just to recap an important point, in my opinion:

Which 4.0 defenders seem the most nailed?

    - Wan Bissaka
    - Peltier
    - Bennet
    - Other?

      Awb & Peltier

If they really are nailed, I see great value for bench option in a 3-5-2 style

Not sure how nailed they are. But AWB looks first choice.
Peltier got injured but started again yesterday.

Bednarek started the last pre-season game over Yoshida and Stephens. Probably just a mistake away from getting dropped, though. Hoedt and Vestergaard seem nailed.

        AWB for sure.

Even if Pelters starts after the first 3 GW Cardiff's fixtures are so bad he'll be hauling 0 points.
