The Captain Poll is now open for votes ahead of Gameweek 3 and you can watch our video on the best candidates for the armband below or on our YouTube channel.

The early favourite is, not surprisingly, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) who faces a very appealing home match against a Brighton side, who are notoriously poor on the road.

The Seagulls shipped nine goals in two league matches against Liverpool in 2017/18, four of them at Anfield in Gameweek 38. The Egyptian netted in that match and provided the assist for Dominic Solanke’s (£5.0m) 53rd minute goal too.

His case is, of course, strengthened by being Liverpool’s biggest goal threat against Crystal Palace on Monday night, even if he only managed two assists in the end.

Sadio Mané (£9.8m), owned by 31 percent, should prove a strong alternative candidate bearing in mind he is a must-have option for the 45 percent of Fantasy managers who do not own Salah, and remains ahead of him for both goal tally and FPL total score.

Either way, Liverpool assets are expected to dominate the captaincy debate this week considering that West Ham were the only top flight side to survive relegation in 2017/18 with more shots conceded on the road than Brighton.

Sergio Aguero‘s (£11.1m) hat-trick against Huddersfield on Sunday will naturally give him some backing for the captaincy this week, as Manchester City prepare to travel to the Molineux.

Wolves may have allowed fewer shots on their goal than any other side so far, but the fact that have still conceded four goals in two matches suggests there are areas to exploit for the reigning champions.

Aguero might be at slightly more risk of rotation this weekend but we will, as per usual, wait and see what emerges in the press conferences later this week.

After four assists in just two matches, the highly-owned Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) is an option for a second week running. In fact, he finished third in the poll behind just Aguero and Salah for Gameweek 2.

After West Ham’s performance at Anfield in Gameweek 1 and a defeat at home to Bournemouth in Gameweek 3, Arsenal assets might also be worth looking at. The favourites there are expected to be Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m).

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur’s meeting at Old Trafford reduces the appeal of a few usual suspects, namely Paul Pogba (£8.1m), Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) for the Red Devils and Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) from the north London outfit.

I removed the 4 weakest players who are all out of form and hope to jump on 4 players coming into form with great fixtures. With 4 new players you have a greater chance of recouping the -8.

Think all of the below are viable captaincy options this week in my team:
    Mane
    Robertson
    Alonso
    Mendy
    Aguero
    Auba

Auba is tempting me as I see Arsenal putting a few past WHU although he did look a little out of sorts over the weekend.

Auba could be a real good differential captain punt. I own him but I’m playing safe with Salah but if I wanted a punt I think he’s up there with the best options this week.

why not, all have good chances of CS + attacking returns + bonus, it would be a bit maverick though for sure 😉

I wouldn’t say maverick I’d say just a pure gamble. It’s so hard to predict when a defender will get attacking points, so you then have a big reliance on the clean sheets which the Man City v Huddersfield match showed you can never guarantee even with the best fixtures as all it takes is a small mistake and the clean sheet is gone.

That’s why it’s nothing but a gamble that you are just hoping the stars align and a defender manages to hold onto his clean sheet and get attacking returns, all on the very week you decide to captain him.

          1. jia you
            • 9 Years
            7 years, 3 months ago

Very true but with Mendy and Alonso so far forward their chances of attacking returns are very high when compared to your average defender, but I take your point.

I think of it more like their chances of attacking returns are similar to players like Xhaka. And you wouldn’t ever captain Xhaka.

Both Xhaka and Alonso gained 9 attacking returns last season. Now Alonso may have clean sheets as additional ways of scoring but these can’t be reliably estimated on a specific match so there isn’t a huge amount of extra value in captaining Alonso over Xhaka in one particular week. And a player like Xhaka would never ever ever be considered as a captaincy option.

                • 9 Years
                7 years, 3 months ago

Well explained, yeah poor captaincy picks as a one off punt then but might not be terrible if you left the armband on them for a very good run of fixtures say, which of course you wouldn't really consider!

You wouldn’t consider but I agree, it certainly could have its merits. I think over a longer period you could average well. One off is just a gamble.

Also with so many great attacking options for this week in particular I think you could help your points potential a lot more with the likes of Mane, Aguero or Auba as captain who could all score double digit points very easily.

I have the same options as you and I'm honestly undecided. Well, undecided between the attackers that is - I would never captain Robertson, Mendy or Alonso! I may be leaning towards Aubameyang for no reason other than I haven't captained him yet, unlike Mane and Aguero.

Do not understand why you'd want Lacazette, until he's guranteed starts. Morata isn't incisive enough as a balanced forward. But not a flat track bully either. Looks like winger. not sure he's good in the air. I rate Giroud in most all aspects ahead of him. Wouldn't you rather downgrade to a 7m option and upgrade with wealth of starter options in MF?

Auba's pace could be too much for that West ham defence, but I wouldn't call it the easiest. A comfortable win, after a slow start they'll be looking to put on a good showing

As a West Ham fan I am bricking it sadly. I think West Ham can score, but conceding is a certainty. Shoddy at the back and despite all this investment, none of it went on a mobile defensive mid, which was the top priority.

That said, I can't get Arsenal coverage without selling Kun for Auba or Pogba to Mkhi for a hit. So I'm hiding behind the sofa.

My team has problems, exacerbated by the WB red card... I can either take hits, or activate the wild card.

Here is my question: how bad do things need to be to activate WC? Is it -12 or worse?

Would appreciate any views on the value of this chip.

A 12pt hit in the first few GW's to change your team up is probably acceptable at this stage as you can easily make the points back and catch the price rises.

Have two FTs but don't know where to use them.
    My current team:

    Foster
    Mendy Luiz van Dijk
    Salah (c) Bilva Richarlison Fraser
    Zaha Aguero Firmino

Bench - M. Ryan, Tomkins, Cairney, Suttner
Thinking about trying to get Mkhitaryan in, or Kante in for Cairney
    Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks

Tomkins to Wan-Bissaka and save .5. Tomkins looks set to drop this week. Wan-B misses next 2 but looks a great prospect. I’d be happy with what you have till you see how Arsenal set up against easier opposition

Price drops from King and Jota messed my plans up. 0FT and 0.0itb

    Patricio
    Mendy, Robertson, Kabasele
    Salah, Hazard, Richarlison, Jota
    Aguero, King, Arnie

    Fab, Cairney, Tomkins, AWB

What do I do? No hit and play Cairney over Jota? Or something else?

    With wildcard.

You gotta pick between Auba, mane and hazard imo unless you don’t optimise defence or go without Kun.

    Mane seems the most popular.

    I think I want Auba.

I'm also on Wildcard. This is most daunting problem to incorporate Auba in the squad with assumption that you want all three big hitters in defence. You must sacrifice someone from Salah/Mane/Hazard/Aguero. Who is your choice

Auba will score very well but I suppose the issue is price. Mane is almost 2 cheaper and Hazard 1.0 cheaper. For that reason I'd opt for Mane and Hazard. It's safer, you get more points for a mid, and the likely reintroduction of Laca will see Aub probably take up a left wing position.

      1. El Lobito 10

Mane is almost 1 cheaper, not 2.

Not for a hit I don't think. Maybe worth waiting on the presser as to any clues if he'll start.

I'd still be tempted by Pedro over Hazard anyway tbh. We know what Eden's like when he gets a good opportunity in front of goal - looks to square it for someone else!

Can't look past Salah. Who could be this years biggest provider of assists perhaps. In any case - he's got a few in him home to BHA.
