The current top-scoring Fantasy Premier League midfield asset versus the record points holder for a single season. It needn’t be an either/or, of course, and plenty of FPL managers own both Sadio Mane (£9.9m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) at this stage of the campaign.

With Jurgen Klopp hinting at rotation, Liverpool’s fixtures about to take a turn for the worse – the Reds face Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester City in the next four Gameweeks – and a premium midfield alternative in Eden Hazard (£10.7m) in a rich vein of form, however, some Fantasy bosses may be considering jettisoning one of these two heavy hitters in the short-term at least.

In this Members’ piece, we will compare Salah and Mane directly while also taking a look at both Liverpool midfielders’ wider appeal compared to the alternatives in their position.

I remember the other half of the last season when the same story about Kane was going on like now around Salah.Holding the most expensive player in FPL coz of fear that he will punish them with another b2b hattrick. City mids, Salah, Son, Auba etc were the players who punished Kane's frightened protectors.Holding a player only because of fear of punishing is one of the most stupid things in FPL.

Fear without evidence is a problem. Except there is evidence to suggest that Salah is still smashing it.

Salah has the stats + 2G/2A from 4 games. It's not fear, just that selling potential + points is way down my list of priorities.

If people captain salah and he hits big those without probably will have a massive rank drop depending on other players obviosly look at kun in the past he devastated non owners

I don't get why those selling Salah have to repeatedly make the fear/stupid argument, beyond reassuring themselves.
If their rationale is correct then in their interest to encourge others to hold.

Well it's easy to argue both sides of the argument using Kane.

Those that removed him before christmas because his price didn't justify his outlay were punished hard.

Actually, this is an even better example, because Kane's stats were outstanding at the time, just as Salah's are now.

        Bottomed

In the shots map, Salah has 12 shots off target to Mané's 4, but in the BPS Minus table, Salah has 5 shots off target to Mané's 3. Could anyone explain to the challenged children out there what the difference between the map and the BPS minus Off Tgt measure is? Asking for a friend. Thanks

Would be good to have easy access to definitions in the members area, eg by hovering over a variable, it will tell you what it means and/or a page of definitions somewhere (maybe even a tutorial that explains them all succinctly at some point in the future).

In case I don't see it or forget, I would also love to be able to view the parameters etc of the public stats table. If people don't describe their tables objectively and transparently, we have no way of knowing what information is in the table. Therefore I feel the need to replicate public tables myself to check, and sometimes find different results.

Would also be nice to be able to discuss the tables underneath them, but maybe that's one for the future... would be nice to introduce a table etiquette in which people actually describe the tables and maybe with the intended purpose and brief interpretation, but most importantly with the parameters used. Perhaps mods and cons could set a precedent by posting examplars once in a while...

See you on the HT maybe 😀

Yeah - actually he has 7 blocked shots so likely that.

Salah has had 19 shots - 7 on target, 7 blocked shots, and 5 off target.

BPS Minus looks at just the off targets, but the shots map just shows on target as green and everything else (blocked or off target) as yellow

Posted this a while ago but I think still relevant for those with the WC. Apologies if I'm spamming the place to death

For those who haven't played their wildcard and plan on waiting a little longer in the season, a great opportunity presents itself at game week 15 if one can wait that long. Here are the fixtures of some selected teams.

Spurs- Amazing stretch of games, starting xi would be a little more settled and they seem to tend to start slow and then pick up as the season goes. From gameweek 15
Sou, Lei, Burnley, Eve, Bou, Wolves, Cardiff, Mun(at home and we dont know if December could be peak Mou implosion period), Fulham, Wat, Newcastle, Lei, Burnley. Kane, Alli/Eriksen/Son and a Spurs def look intriguing options.

West Ham- Cardiff, Palace, Fulham, Watford, Soton, Burnley, Brighton Arsenal (at home and early signs show leaky Arsenal defence), Bou, Wolves. Arnautovic/Hernandez (if he starts) look key plus maybe one of Yarmolenko/Felipe Anderson and Fab(CS and save points)

City- A little more rough than others but they could possible be fixture prrof.
Wat, Che(away but Sarris Chelsea isn't Contes Chelsea), Eve, Palace, Lei, Soton, Liv(at home and guaranteed goals), Wolves, Hud, Newcastle. Starting striker plus defensive option look intriguing.

Newcastle. Short sexy run. Eve Wolves, Hud, Fulham. Defensive option or Dubravka and Kenedy at 5m ish could be gold.

Of course all this is subjective and I could easily be saying nonsense.

Tl;dr. Gw 15 onwards looks a great time to WC. Spurs have the best run followed by West Ham and City and Newcastle look a great way to set a template.

                Thanks for this!

Just interested what you think about Christmas rotation affecting this. I wildcarded around this time last year (it didn’t work as immediately picked up a load of injuries) because I wanted to strengthen my bench over be Christmas period. Is there a reason no one in the community talks about saving their wildcard for this?

Beats me as to why everyone seems to think it should only be gw 8 or now for the WC.
Rotation around Christmas is definitely a factor so a strong bench is key. However it's easy to fill up your team with fairly nailed on players from here. Kane, Eriksen are certain and provably even alli. Arnie is nailed even if he may be reverse oop, a WHU def should be nailed by then(I believe Fredericks who could offer great value). Dubravka and Lascelles as well with Kenedy maybe.
City as usual a minefield but don't be surprised if one of aguero or jesus is out and they have just one recognized striker. Mendy seems like the least likely City def to be rested outside Ederson.
In addition outside this teams you will have some players who you trust. Of course fpl can just mess you up with tough luck but lots of fairly nailed players in that combo

Well said. However, all is not lost for wildcarders.
1, we will all probably be carrying city assets so done have to worry about bringing more in
2, Can get NEW assets as early as GW9. The next two ganeweeks look to favour FUL and CAR, but after that you could easily hold allowing to go into GW 14 with 2FT to start considering mini WC to get WHM and SPURS players in.
The prob with WCing for Xmas is there always seem to be big rotation. So I avoid.
                Cheers

Very well said. A good alternative view. I feel even with the rotation we expect, one can fit in at least 13 quality players who are fairly nailed. Of course lots of things you can't plan for like Kane picking a hammy

No, this is an important strategy discussion and needs even an fixture article. Or this needs to be a hot topic at least. Now is good time to think longer term strategy.

For comparison there is also fixture swing coming sooner, and they need some comparison. For us who are offloading Liverpool assets and spreading the money, wc before gw9 looks easy strategy. Yet last spring we saw, that the difference between wc timing was not very important as long as it was well planned. The "dead end" strategy worked anyway fine for me as even ditching Salah.

The template is changing now and handling this first fixture change without wc is a problem, but needs to be discussed. CP has Everton away gw9 and then bad fixtures start. Pool players are all needed for gw9. City might be pretty fixture proof, so no worries. Chelsea has ManU home gw9 and that needs monitoring. Arnie in probably for gw9 or 10. This is slightly annoying since the change is not happening in one gw.

So the main question is, which fixture change demands more wc?

Yeah think we should get either a hot topic or an article on the use of the Wildcard and when the best time could be. It's very possible someone could give an analysis of why gw8 is the best time. Like I said previously, applied a strategy similar to this last year and it gave me a massive boost up to the top of my ML from which I never really came down

All set on this WC team. 🙂

                Patricio - Hamer
                Alonso - Mendy - Dunk - AWB - Bennett
                Sterling - Hazard - Fraser - Ward - Hojbjerg
                Aguero - Lukaku - Vardy

Have a Kane and Salah plan in place that involves no hits.

                GW 6 - Save FT
                GW 7 - Hazard ➡ Richarlison
                GW 8 - Aguero ➡ Kane
                GW 9 - Dunk ➡ TAA
                GW 10 - Sterling + Richarlison ➡ Salah + Pereyra
                GW 11 - Patricio ➡ Fabianski
                GW 12 - Save FT
                GW 13 - Kane ➡ Aguero
                GW 14 - Fraser + Lukaku ➡ Hazard + Arnautovic

Covered all the big hitters for all their juicy fixture runs without ANY HITS. Planning that far ahead seldom works out but it's better to have a plan than none I guess. I will stick to this plan if everything goes my way. 😉

                Thoughts? 🙂

...that you're able to execute it that way. Even couple of weeks is long time in fantasy football and it's just much more probable that something unplanned will surface sooner or later

                      I'm fully prepared for that.

I'll just take a hit if something unusual happens.

I'm. I will happily take 1 goal a game from Salah over the next 4 as I believe the upgrades elsewhere in my team would better that. Salah will then be back in my team in GW 9.

If Salah scores less than that, then it'd be most welcome.

it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Salah (especially if captained in GW6&9) outscores all those players over the next 5 weeks

I probably will bring Salah in GW 9 along with TAA.

So, only GW 6 to worry about and I'll be happy if Salah scores 1 goal. My other players would cover that. Moreover, very high chance of Salah getting hooked early in GW 6 with a congested fixture schedule to follow.

Would you be okay with Salah scoring one goal in each of fixtures between GW's 5-8? I think much of your plan relies on Salah not scoring in those harder fixtures.

The problem with plans is you become so obsessed with implementing them that you forget about the fundamentals of the game. What if Arnie massively kicks into gear around GW10 but your plan is working out transfer wise. Do you feel you'll be able to move away from the plan? Or will it become the aim of the game iitself.

I'll definitely be flexible. For e.g. if Arnie hits form like you say then Vardy ➡ Arnie is an easy move for a hit but if Vardy keeps on getting points then Arnie's points won't bother me much.

Is there a back-up plan to get Salah in earlier?

                  Arnie GW14+ could be good.

No Salah before GW 8. not having him for tot,SOT,che,MCI.

May get him in GW 9 rather than 10. i'll have the cash to do that but Sterling has BUR in GW 9, so it'll be a last minute decision depending on their then form.

That is assuming those without Salah do not have other players who can get hauls, strong back line and overall squad AND Hazard/Mane/Aguero/Lukaku etc etc.
It is not just one player that get points in fpl they all can.
It depends on what combination of players you have.

Ignore the wildcard as it's a waste to plan it for one specific move, it's basically a -8. Planning in transfers is always a bad idea as something else will come up:

                      Salah CHE(A) + MAN CITY (H) + 8
                      versus
                      Kane HUD (A) + CAR (H)

It's not as clear cut to me. Also depends on who the other two players are?

A lot of talk of rotation from Liverpool with Champions League matches and Leage Cup matches in between the premier league fixtures. But then everyone is dying to captain Salah against Southampton. I’m not sure at all if rotation will kick in and Mo may very well just play all games with slightly reduced minutes but if there was one game to rest him in, the Southampton game has to be up there with the most likely.

Dont think klopp rests him there. Think Pools priority is the league and other fringe players have a chance to play in the tie against Chelsea. The worst thing for them is to play with the easiest match in that schedule

Yes, but his point is that Salah definitely won't be rested against their rivals for top 4 spots. So these silly plans of removing Salah only to get him in for easy fixtures have a high chance of ending in tears!

He said Pool's priority is the league, so it looks like he meant their EFL cup tie against Chelsea. Which makes sense. No brainer that Pool won't rest players before an EFL cup game. It's the least of their priorities.

Southampton game isn't likely at all.

They've got CL, then 4 days later the Southampton game, then 3 days later EFL cup, then 4 days later Chelsea in the PL.

Clearly, the rotation is going to happen in the EFL cup game, which means the side will be full strength in the Southampton game. Benching Salah 2 games in a row makes no sense, he's a professional football player.

'Mane is also a form player and there is no reason to suggest his underlying data couldn’t improve over the coming Gameweeks or that his goals would dry up even if it doesn’t.'

Many are pointing out that not owning Salah would kill ranks of managers who don't own him.

But, I don't think they are taking into account the potentials of his replacements e.g. Lukaku,Sterling, hazard to haul and match Salah.

Then there could be the captaincy argument but Salah non owners can have the following captains over the next 4 GWs -

                  GW 5 - Aguero (FUL)
                  GW 6 - Hazard (whm)/Lukaku (WOL)/ Aguero (car)
                  GW 7 - Aguero (BRI)
                  GW 8 - Kane (CAR)

I don't think not owning Salah over this period would be too big an issue.

However, I do believe Salah probably would be close too essential from GW 9/10 onwards.

Somehow I doubt Lukaku... I take your point however. We see a schism forming in the community (something good) where the more risk averse are leaving Salah banking on big pointage from Sterling / Hazard etc. One of these groups will be consolidating for the rest of the season... We will see

I think there's a good chance non-Salah will be just fine, but I personally wouldn't do it unless on wildcard to take advantage of the money redistribution. As i feel little need to use my wildcard just yet, I will remain with Salah.

Sound. Currently Salah's not firing and Mane is. I don't see the logic of having both like I see in some teams. When Salah's returns improve Mane's will surely dip a bit. So in the meantime I think with a few 6-8m mids bringing a few points you're better off keeping Mane, selling Salah, posdibly for a 6-8m mid and get a big hitter defender or striker.

You are trying to open a window facing a brick's wall.
They don't care, they refuse to play without Salah.
We Salahless play other way, will see at the finish line

Of course we know he is good, of course we are afraid, but if we develop other strategy to spend better the money they only see it as luck.

It might be too much of an unnecessary challenge to trade him out then trade him back in again 4GW's later. Its a lot of coin that has to get shunted around and I'd image that in all likelihood a hit or two will be involved. Is it not simply easier to keep hold of him? He has the best stats in the league after all.

His FPL points are the only stats that count. Last season he would miss loads of chances, hence his lowish baps count. But he would also score big, not like a confidence striker who's head drops and stops trying after he misses a few chances. Not scoring them now. Possibly a World Cup hangover but he was rested before it and only played two games. He's still creating chances but not taking them. More useful as a decoy who distracts defenders for Mane to take advantage.

Typically stats tend to correlate with points as they did last season. On the evidence so far, he is doing nothing different and would again be on course for 300pts

He does have the potential to really hurt your rank if he goes big in a few games which we know he can. I don't have him at the moment , i feel i can cover him with good captain picks and Mane up to game week 8, but it's a very risky with his high ownership. Most Salah owners will have Aguero and hazard to lessen the blow if they get huge hauls. Kane is probably the only player who can hurt them being a captains pick. What am a little bit puzzled by on here is people are ditching for Liverpools hard fixtures ..they really turn up for those games and are high scoring ..don't be shocked to see Salah hauls through this period.

Salah could easily get a hattrick against Southampton in GW 6. Most people will put him captain then and if he hauls you will suffer.

I’ve whittled it down to two key choices. Help me out wise people

                  A) Mané, Wally > Hazard, Fraser (-4)
                  B) Wally > Fraser / Maddison (FT)

                  1FT 0itb
                  Fabianski
                  Alonso, Mendy, Robbo, PVA
                  Salah, Mané*, Mkhi, Wally*
                  Aguero, Wilson
                  (Foster) (Wan-B, Hughes, Kamara)

Despite the price difference, I believe Salah will ultimately win out. I think Mané on the other hand is in a great run of form but is likely to settle down to a less explosive level and at the same time is less capable of magic when coming on from the bench than Salah. Hazard has the combination of form and fact there are fewer players in CHE sharing the involvement in goals and assists vs LIV.

The B) option is because ultimately it’s risky to drop either of the ‘Pool mids and I’m a Liverpool fan!

My head hurts! This IB is too long!

Yeah honestly, if you read the article, you wouldn't do Mane to Hazard. His points per million is better than anyone, meaning he is the best value player in the game right now (for the premium picks at least).

Why does everyone keep saying this? Sure robbo is premium but dont believe the always play your premium defs. HUD are very goal shy and I strongly believe Spurs will score. I think what needs to be watched is whether Tomkins is back. He plays a huge role in their defensive solidity

                  A good and timely article

I’ve been looking at the stats myself, and there’s one which this article fails to address: conversion rate

If one compares to last years stats, Salah is level pegging with shots / chances made ........ while his conversion rate is way down on last year

Mane, meanwhile, is way up on his conversion rate to last year

I haven’t seen all of Liverpool’s extended highlights this season, but I’m struggling to think that Mane became lethal on his summer hols, not that Salah was a one season wonder.

I’m sticking with salah as I expect an increase in his conversion rate (notwithstanding the opposition getting better over the coming month) and I’m toying with Mane > Hazard, as I expect Mane to regress

I mean, Salah should have converted his chance before the first goal, it was a sitter

What would be interesting to see would be their history of scoring against top 6 sides.

I agree with you Danish. It's only four games in so we could expect a deviation from longer-term conversion rates but given both these players are likely season keepers, injury notwithstanding, one would expect these long-term rates to reestablish themselves.

                  WC draft 3.0:

                  Hennessey - Hamer
                  Alonso - Mendy - Shaw - AWB - Bennett
                  Hazard - Mane - Pedro - Madisson - Billing
                  Aguero - Lukaku - Ings

Looks good. Maybe get a 2nd playing keeper cos you're screwed if Hennessy is injured/suspended. Nice Lukaku pick. Pedro is quality but possibly Sarri will rotate him depending on opposition.

Hope you're right. As a Pool supporter I don't care who scores if they keep getting 3 pointers but Salah is a good bloke so hopefully he has a savage season. Lukaku will always score goals though maybe not against the top teams. Was a better pick at Everton though.

My 2 pennies. The article does not mention that Sadio Mane has 17 goals in his latest 22 games for Liverpool. For me that's not form, that is a clear indication of consistency. If Mane does not have to deal with an injury, then the price difference between both simply is not justified.

There is no clearcut answer as to get both or one of them - it simply depends on your team structure, available funds and especially your comfort zone.

Again, I also think Mane could be a decent option this year in FPL, but I just don’t think his numbers and stats are sustainable.
It seems like your are skewing the stats a bit. Surely PL goals/involvement should be the most central to our discussion - of which he had a goal every 221’ minutes... Maybe he is overperforming, maybe he has improved. Either way let’s not just find stats that back up our personal opinion!

ive sold already...i have salah and hazard and david silva instead, and im happy. my team looks much better now.

i feel silva can match him consistently, whereas aguero will be more explosive.

He is but it's not as though Newcastle away is a great fixture so waiting another week at least won't hurt. If he starts that match too and looks good I reckon he's worth a punt despite on going rotation risk.

It feels like everyone is in a similar boat regarding cheap Mids. Has anyone done a summary of pros and cons of the options:
Please excuse the lack of stats, quite alot of my opinion, I don't have access to members area:

                    Pereyra:
59% shot accuracy last season and similar so far this season
But 5 goals whole of last season and already 3 this season. so what has changed under Gracia?
Could it be that he is getting himself into better positions in order to score? if so then this would increase his potential as an asset.
Big question mark is can Watford keep it up, and my opinion is at least at home they will all season as the crowd seems right behind them. Poor fixtures but good form so its the old form vs fixtures.

                    Fraser:
60% shot accuracy last season and slightly less so far this season, but only 5 goals all of last season and a poor 3 assists. He also appears to be 'overperforming' having bagged a goal already and an assist and 5 big chances created and if anyone has watched them he defo passes the eye test a lot more. so what has changed this season do we think?
Personally it just appears that Eddie Howes work is starting to pay off, anyone that has followed bmouth much in last couple of seasons has seen the slow improvement going forward and this year i believe they have created most chances from open play. Can they keep it up, im not sure but its a very good sign that they have created so many chances since as opposed to Watford , we are used to Bmouth attacking well consistently.
Better fixtures coming up too. I like the Fraser pick Long term too.

                    Richarlison:
As we all know his shot accuracy dropped and dropped throughout the season, signs of him tiring which is what has been reported.
so its difficult to make comparisons, he is definitely more precise this season only 5 shots and 3 of them on target with goals.
I think he is pretty deadly under silva, and what impresses me the most is how he gets in the box on the end of crosses, great with his right foot and head.
if you watched them in the 1st 3 games, i feel like he plays with some intelligent players too (sigurdsson, tosun and schneiderlin)...i'm not saying the other options don't but Everton are becoming quite a creative team, (we are waiting for the gelling period still to end i believe, as opposed to bmouth and watford who are relatively well formed teams already). so because of this, Evertons potential does frighten me, richarlison could have a big season so out of the 3 i would say he is more of the 'risk worth taking'.
Look at it this way, he is a 6.7 'striker' basically...more deadly than wilson, deeney, murray etc (not mitro imo). if only it was that simple, i would pick him straight away...but obviously need to consider will he get as many opportunities as Wilson or Deeney who are on the end of most of what they create. For some reason i prefer the technically gifted players for FPL in my team. so i am definitely considering him.

thanks for this MT, really interesting read. Almost a shame that Wilson and Fraser are both playing for Bournemouth

who are you considering after reading this?

Not sure. Have Walcott, Mkhi, Pedro so hoping to wait a week for a proper 2FT fix if needed. Already have Wilson so adding Fraser feels optimistic. Maybe Pereyra, as individual form seems to fit with improvement for team in general: http://www.plfantasy.com/2018/09/comparing-like-for-like-fixtures-and.html But honestly no idea atm as others like Silva need considering in a double switch.

                                we have similar thoughts

i currently have Silva , moura and Gundogan in those positions (given that Sal and Haz are non movers)

im sticking with Silva, looked great in last match and i think will be involved in everything good that they do.
so i think 1st move will be Fraser for Gundo and then in 2-3 weeks im hoping that we would have found out whether to keep Moura or not and then i would have made a decision between Pereyra or Rich to be my 5th.

....or i could just get Mane and Hughes and forget the lot of them! haha ..would be quite some midfield, Mane, Silva, Haz, Sal and hughes.

What i am understanding from the Table from the column, tells me the following players would be good assets to bring in (looking at CC's and SIB's):

                                - Pedro
                                - Zaha
                                - Wilson/Fraser
                                - Rich
                                - Pereyra/ Deeney

This is only providing that they maintain their form of course, Watford surely cant as they have tougher fixtures.
Bournemouth interestingly are not much better than last season, but this is almost a good thing sinceit means that you can rely that they are not over/under performing as opposed to Watford.
Palace and Everton i would put in same bracket, they just both seem to be creating a lot better than last year, better play, better management, creating more.
Chelseas form of football 'Sarri ball' seems to be working well, if only pedro was nailed. i already have Hazard and Alonso.

                                Conclusion:
                                bring in Fraser/Wilson and Rich
keep Zaha in mind maybe for after the bad run of fixtures (currently questions over his fitness)

Interestingly Liverpool not creating as much as last year, so i will stick to Just Salah and robbo for now.

                                Thanks !!!

Zaha is a weird one to me... He looks fantastic and I really rate him as a footballer. But he just doesn't appeal to me much as a fantasy prospect. Especially as a forward...

Because I use highly analytical statistic data, trends, historical data and graphs based on all the above I will use the most scientific way in order to pick one of the two...who is the prettiest. I know, I know too much science in my life

Going with both Mo and Mane.

Same, at least til SOU match

For me its not just about the SOU match. If they can score big against the "big teams", why take them out and waste transfers?

Considering Kane as a captaincy option GW7-8or9
Salah is an easy double FT switch and back and will be lowly favoured as a captaincy option those weeks, so less danger of a haymmering 🙂

Yeah, see no reason to sell either right now.

Unsure what to do here; save, wait or press the FT button

                              Mikky to Hazard
                              Firmino to Wilson -4 ?

                              Alonso Robbo Mendy Schlupp Wbis
                              Mikky Walcott Pedro Salah 4.5
                              Aguero Firmino Ings

Getting Hazard fine but don't take a hit for Wilson.

                                A. Firmino can score at anytime. If anything downgrade on a free transfer to release funds.

What’s a good number of players for a draft league on fpl?
