“Show me the money”

Mo Salah finally showed the money to his owners with a 15 point performance in the match against Cardiff. Elsewhere, Bournemouth assets continued to prosper, Arnie went MIA, Spurs and City played American Football, Barkley emerged as an FPL option, and there was more Liverpool defensive juggling for The Great and The Good to consider.

Who are these mighty FPL gladiators who earn the name of The Great and The Good? They are Ville Ronka, Jay Egersdorff, The Scoutcasters (Joe, Andy, Az, David, Granville, and Mark), Eliteserien’s expert Niemi, and the Last Man Standing TorresMagic. These are FPL managers I have handpicked to follow to help improve my own performance.

Overall Performance

Ville Ronka GW 76 pts Total 683 pts (rank 4629)

TorresMagic GW 71 pts Total 667 pts (rank 13023)

Andy GW 69 pts Total 658 pts (rank 21426)

Niemi GW 62 pts Total 647 pts (rank 37536)

David GW 68 pts Total 645 pts (rank 39930)

Joe GW 65 pts Total 637 pts (rank 57969)

Granville GW 74 pts Total 634 pts (rank 65548)

Mark GW 83 pts Total 630 pts (rank 79209)

Az GW 62 pts Total 603 pts (rank 212096)

Jay Egersdorff GW 82 pts Total 593 pts (rank 293848)

Jay’s performance is the real talking point this week as he managed an excellent 82 points and showed real courage, as he was the only one of The Great and The Good not to have Salah is his squad, instead relying on Mane.

In terms of points Mark was the highest scorer this week closely followed by Jay and they both benefitted from the continued faith in Callum Wilson as he again delivered points (that is now an impressive 33 points over the last 4 weeks). They also can thank their keepers with Ryan continuing his good form and Dubravaka showing the first signs that he could prove a wise purchase as Newcastle hope to tighten things up at the back with some pleasant fixtures on the horizon.

Jay rose up another 200,000 + places and his surge up the rankings is now really picking up momentum.  This was particularly impressive as he only could field 10 men this week. He was not the only one who struggled to get a full eleven on the pitch with Az, David, and Torres Magic also down to the bare bones of their squads.

Ville Ronka still leads the way and achieves his highest position of the season as he sits in the top 5,000 for the first time. At the other end of the table Az continues to struggle after his wildcard a few weeks ago and has down dropped out of the top 200k. This could have been a lot worse had he not drafted in Salah, even after suggesting earlier in the week he was prepared to go without.

Transfers and Hits

This is a summary of the rest of transfers for this week :

Andy – Arnie (Vardy)

Az – Salah (Sterling)

David – Arnie (Jiménez)

Granville – No transfer

Jay – Arnie (Zaha)

Joe – Robertson (Trippier)

Mark – Holebas (Wan-Bissaka)

Niemi – Maddison (Richarlison)

Torres Magic – Arnie (Jiménez)

Ville Ronka – No transfer

*transfers out are in brackets

The most popular transfer this week was the purchase of Arnautovic, but his absence from the team sheet was a bitter blow to many of The Great and The Good. I am sure he’ll be back but concern over his fitness may put off further investment despite those glorious fixtures and it may be hasta la vista baby. Andy brought him at the expense of Vardy and David’s transfer was seemingly influenced by Joe following discussion on the Breakfast Club. Is this the first sign of mind games being played by Joe, as David currently leads him in the overall rankings?

Template

After those transfers the template now looks like this:

Hennessey, Hamer

Wan-Bissaka, Robertson, Doherty, Alonso, TAA/Bennett

Salah, Hazard, Maddison, Richarlison, Fraser/Hojbjerg

Aguero, Mitrovic, Arnautovic

Little change in the template this week with Arnie being the only new name on the team sheet replacing Jiménez. Surprisingly, TAA is still clinging onto his place but I’m pretty sure Mendy will be making his return soon. Mitrovic is another one whose days may be numbered, but he is probably safe for at least another week due to the enticing Huddersfield fixture. I would fancy Wilson or possibly Murray to be on the shopping list for The Great and Good, which is a classic debate of form vs fixtures. Hazard is the only one who sits in all ten teams but his absence was another one that tested the bench strength of the teams.

Team Investment and Value

Average Cost of Player looks like this across the teams based on week 1 prices:

Goalkeeper –  4.5

Defender – 5.1

Midfielder – 8.2

Forward – 7.7

ITB – 0.9

There is limited change in The Great and The Good’s investment with the excess money in the bank from last week being used to provide a slight upgrade to their forward lines. In terms of overall team value (for those of you following along please note that this is based on value as of GW10 deadline) the 103 million gang is now yesterday’s news as we now have two in the 104 gang. Granville leads the way at 104.1 and Ville Ronka has 104. Meanwhile Jay is still outside 103 with a team value of only 102.4.

Formation and Bench

It was all about the bench strength for gameweek 10. All of The Great and The Good had to bring two off the bench this week to cover some of the notable absentees, apart from Granville who only had Richarlison coming in. The contribution from the substitutes was mixed with David and Torres Magic gaining some comfort from Yedlin’s clean sheet and the aforementioned Richarlison adding an assist to help Granville and Mark’s cause.

Looking over the full season there seems to be a growing need to factor in some form of reserve strength. Jay, for example, has had to look to the sidelines 8 times during the first 10 weeks. King of the substitutes is Granville who has averaged 7 points from his replacements so far.

Formation wise it is still all about the 3-4-3 (51% deployment over the season) although Ville continues to reject this tactic. However, with all the changes in personnel, this week saw 5-3-2 deployed for the first time by Andy and a surge in the popularity of the 4-3-3 which now sits at 12% usage over the season.

Captain and Differentials

This was the week to captain Salah and he rewarded all with a strong return. He reclaimed the most popular captain spot over the season from Aguero having now been picked 46% of the time versus Aguero’s 42% with the rest just making up the numbers. Jay was the one manager who stuck by his Salah-out strategy and without the Egyptian he relied on Mané. It was a bold move but Jay was rewarded and is now racing up the rankings. The Senegalese star is currently only in Jay’s squad. Speaking of which, in terms of differentials (those players only held by one The Great and The Good teams) perhaps the most intriguing are Siggy and Balbuena, who both only sit in Niemi’s squad. Siggy is looking more and more like a better option than Maddison or Richarlison and the Eliteserien king seems to have it right with the Icelander registering points this week. However, he will be disappointed that Balbuena was only third on his bench this week as that would have been a useful boost. Elsewhere, Mark is the only one to keep faith with Sterling (and was rewarded with an assist) as Az abandoned him in the rush for Salah.

Conclusion

This week saw many managers having to rely on on their substitutes in order to keep them afloat. Yet investment in the bench still remains low, the average cost of the players based on week 1 prices from this group for gameweek 10 was only 4.4. It is against the general wisdom to spend much on these players and the excellent series of interviews with some of the best FPL managers by Joe has encouraged limited attention to the bench.

Yet with more and more rotation, European adventures ongoing for the top clubs, niggling injuries for some of the best targets, and some increasingly annoying vague press conferences (Klopp and Howe are the worst), the question for The Great and The Good is this: Is it time to use transfers to ensure a team with 14 or even 15 good options?

As always I am sure they will have the answer..

However, that’s all from me for now and remember don’t have nightmares.

As mentioned by Greyhead in the above article, and many others on site, our benches are playing more of a role so far this season than expected. How are you addressing this, or are you?

Will you be focusing a transfer or two on your bench to strengthen it, particularly as the festive period has many games packed together? Are you thinking of getting rid of a 'bench fodder' 4.5m midfielder? Are you looking to spread the funds across your side more evenly?

Does the potential for playing different formations, when you have a stronger bench, interest you at all?

Maybe i should. This GW i had:

      WBA: 4,2 - Cameo 1 pt
      Stephens: 4,4 - Cameo 3 pt
      Kamara: 4,5 - Cameo 1 pt

I do however, not like, having points or value on my bench. The must frustrating thing ever 🙂

Exactly. I have always had a weak bench. Last finishes has been pretty high so i feel its a strategy that works for me.

There has to be weeks where starting kenedy and murphy feels alright. That's why they are better assets than Stephens/Højbjerg and the likes.

I like to always have a playing bench even if they are only 2 pointers. I still go cheap as too many first team options creates a benching headache each week. So invest in your first XI and have enough strength off the bench for rotation imo.

I wouldn’t have a third non playing striker for example just to release funds....

Is benching headaches a bad thing in FPL or is it just that its uncomfortable to be on the wrong end of variation from time to time.

A benching headache is normally a sign of a decent squad, unless you have completely forgone premium assets and are forced to bench a couple 7mil plus players every week. Then that is just wasted value.

Just Wildcarded with this in mind. With the squad depth of the top teams, who we will want premium players from in our teams I think it is sound to put a bit more money in at least one bench player. Personally I'm putting more money into defence and having at least one cheap, but decent defender mid or forward (Doherty, Balbuena, Fraser, Ings in my case) on bench every week.

I’ve gone with 2x cheaps, 1x slightly less cheap.

Bennett, Westwood (who I’ll replace with Stephens/nailed 4.3 when I have nothing else to use 2FTs) and Doherty.

Hamer I might replace with Button if/when Ryan is away, if I think ederson is going to get rotated.

I really don't think they're playing more of a role than expected. Every year at around October/November FFS has a panic about fixture congestion and people wonder about their benches.

Just bench fodder for me - having Stephens and Wan-Bissaka on my bench means I can play Richarlison and Pereyra in my starting XI, instead of guys like Kenedy and Camarasa 😀

The way I play I always make sure I have a strong bench.

Yes it hurts when you bench a lot of points and yes there is a lot of wasted budget sat there but it also does wonders when you do need auto subs.

I don’t think there is a right answer to this, just personal preference.

I decided to have a strong bench from the beggining.
I went with Neves, Jonny and AWB. Now typically my bench is consisted of Ings, Jonny and AWB. I rotate Fraser with Ings, even Maddison. Unfortunately this strategy didn't pay off well because of wrong layout in different GWs.
Currently 5 auto subs have offered me only 17 points, while the total benched points are 104!
Note that 37 of them came from rotated keepers (Foster/Fab).
So as a conclusion I would say that a strong bench isn't necessarily a must, it has to be combined with forunate layout decisions.

To be honest, I think Joe has it "wrong" with the idea of the "cheap bench", or at the very least its not nuanced enough.

When discussing this subject, I think its important to note that we should not be discussing the "dirt-cheap playing bench" (4.0-4.0-4.5 vs "the strong bench" (5.0-5.0-5.5). Its somewhere in between. If were only looking at the bench as a commodity that comes in use when players are benched, then Joe's got it spot on. The money on the bench becomes next to "useless", as we rarely have to rely on getting players of the bench, and when we do, they rarely come with great promise, whether they be 4.0 or 5.5.

The most interesting debate should be how much money should be spent on the bench to get attractive playable assets in a rotation. Joe makes it sound like riding 11 players week in week out is the best way to go about things, but there are many that keep 1-3 slots open for rotation.

I believe there are enough "cheap players" to opt for at least 1-2 rotational slots in your XI, and I dont believe redistributing 0.5-1.0 on 1-3 players will diminish the probability of getting returns.

As a hypothetical: Is it better to have Richarlison playing week in week out with WAN, Bennet and Højbjerg on the bench? Or is it perhaps better to let that slot be "up for grabs" with say: Deolofeu, Murphy, Lascelles and Digne.

Turned in to quite a rant. I agree with the idea of having bench be as cheap as possible. But I also dont agree with the idea that benches only have to provide a steady stream of 2's. every slot in our team is precious, and we should get more out of a slot than solely £ saved.

Purely for your hypothetical, I honestly think that with that many good options on the bench you're bound to get it wrong more often than not, and would be better off with Richardson and cheapies.

But I agree with the principle of a somewhat flexible squad. AWB/Bennet/Balbuena should be everyone's fifth defender, a very playable option according to fixture. Doherty/another good quality def should be 4th, and then RAM/RLM/some other valid premium combo, with 7 good quality attacking strikers. This gives you the luxury of benching say Richarlison away to liverpool, by playing AWB against BUR or Doherty against car. I have used this principle to some effect so far this season, for example by benching the likes of Fraser when I thought he would be contained by Palace, and it hasn't truly punished me so far, (though this could admittedly change at any time, and to some extent this is confirmation bias) the furthest I got to punishment being Jiminez's 5 pointer on the bench when AWB conceded.

Totally agree with this, there is a middle ground here somewhere...theres a difference between having say
Fraser - Shaw - Doherty as your bench compared to say Doherty - Balbuena - Success (this is my bench)

i think its about trying to get the most out of your 11 as possible and have the 3 who you would ordinarily bench having something about them such as doherty or balbuena even success but being still under the 4.5m mark, so that when required you can play them and get something out of them. i think thats vital.

So get your list of 4.5's and under from def's mids and strikers and pick 3 players that will actually a) play and b) affect a game with potential for points. i know a lot of FPL players that dont spend much time picking these bench options but they can be vital, every fpl asset is important

The players youre mentioning are prime examples of players that you would be happy to bench, but at the same time could also play a part in your XI. This was exactly the point i was trying to make. We should make sure that all players (evn benchplayers) meat this criteria --> then worry about the price. The example might have been a bit misleading, but was only used to show how big of an impact one downgrade can have on several positions.

          Cheers...
Happy to see that your getting my point. It was only an example to make a point of how dowgrading one player can activate several others. By choosing the players I did, i think that point came well across, because the price of the two sets of players were very similar. I would prob opt for a bit cheaper but stil highly playable assets, applying that logic.

Also, the thing about "getting it wrong" is one I dont fully get. Your gonna play the one that makes the most sense and accept that variance will play its part. Whether you bench point or not isnt particularly interesting, only the points from the "rotational slot" is of interest.

I like this comment. There are different ways managers choose to use a bench. I like the idea of using your bench proactively; picking the right players for the right games and benching those with more difficult fixtures, however this requires a fair amount of forward planning and luck to come off right, and it can become derailed as soon as you have a couple injuries. However, it does allow for say a Doherty, Deulofeu, or Fraser to come off the bench with a tough fixture and not a Kamara or Peltier.

Of course as Deadlift points out with keepers, it can backfire and you're left with 37 points on the bench.

Yeah! GK is the trickiest when it comes to rotation.

Im not saying the cheapest of the cheapest are "useless", im merely wondering why saving 0.1-0.2 in one slot seems to be considered of more use than having a piece you can slot into your team every time fixtures hands you an opportunity. For me this seems illogical.

      always have a playing bench.
ATM so much value in cheap defenders doesn't make sense not to.
PL slowly changing where the big sides have improved quality of squads with players who would be starters elsewhere. Rotation is a fact of life at top end of PL not just about fixtures but about having so many players they can play them without weakening side. City and Liverpool both paid out big money this summer adding to already loaded midfields.

brought in Murphy 2 weeks ago with a spare transfer. Could easily start him next 5/6 weeks. Only .3/.4 more expensive than many sides 5th mids who are happy to park that money on the bench. 0.6% ownership is a very nice little differential.

I wildcarded last week and finally got rid of Peltier/Cairney and it paid of immediately as I needed all my 3 subs in for the first time this season with Arnie, Hazard and Robbo did not play.

I now have one of Doherty/Kenedy, Camarasa and AWB on the bench. Camarasa is a good 4.5 bench fodder, AWB will come good after 3-4 GWs. It is the best I can do with a team having Salah. I am seeing some very strong benches in most of the Salah-less teams that I do not favor to have Fraser or Richarlison in my bench. I needed my 3rd sub for the first time this season and it will probably happen 2-3 time more at most.

So, my formulation is half-decent first sub around 5.0 at most, AWB and playing 4.5 which is Camarasa in my case.

I generally assume that one of my bench players will be used every week so I should treat my bench as "one" starting player rather than backup. Essentially I choose 3 cheap-ish options where one of which is likely to be a strong option any given gameweek, usually based on fixtures.

Having a few decent options also helps when my starting 11 have tough fixtures themselves. So they definitely need to be starters.

In spite of my usual tactics it does depend on your broader team. I've downgraded my team to get Salah in. I think he could do a lot of damage for the rest of the season and would make a good captain option with hazard. It's early days but I'm willing to weaken the bench and see how it plays out.

Forget about jammy subs, they are too luck dependent. The value of a performing bench comes in the form of saved transfers. It allows you to hold players who are injured for a GW (Hazard) or suspended for a game. Especially useful when you have value tied up in them.

For instance, I am going to ride through Fraser's poor fixtures with my subs - Bennett (GW13), AWB (GW14), and hoping that he returns for me in the favorable fixtures. The saved transfer can be used elsewhere.

Stanislas is knocking on the door and Brooks is pushing Fraser. I think Deulofeu offers better value but I might be slightly bias as a bough him after the Wolves game. He's looking good

    Bottomed...

    Would you rather have....

    A) Ederson - Mane - Maddison - Wilson
    B) Fab/Ryan - Salah - Mahrez - Success
    C) Fab/Ryan - Mane - KDB - Wilson

    My team atm :
    Fabianski - Foster
Mendy - Bennet - Doherty - Robertson - Wan Bisakka
    Hazard - Maddison - Fraser - Salah - Richarlison
    Deeney - Arnautovic - Aguero

    2 FT 0 ITB

    I'm planning Deeney + Doherty + Richarlison > Success + Alonso + Barkley fort a hit.
    Good move ?

After watching Chelsea highlights closely, I must admit I was very impressed with Morata. Providing Giroud plays tonight, is anyone else thinking he could yet be a good FPL prospect once more? I did the same with Deulofeu after his 60 mins against Wolves. He looked impressive and I signed him. I personally feel Morata has knuckled down and set on silencing his critics.
His build up play was excellent bringing others into play. It was also noted that he was the go to man with celebrations in the Burnley game. Feeling punty 🙂

I thought he was impressive too. Far too early for me to consider bringing him in though. At 8.7 it would require restructuring of team and then one disaster of a game, Giroud starts the next 3 and I have to refiddle again to get him out.

I agree it depends on team structure. I currently have Kane, Lukaku (cough cough) and Arnie. So it's an easy switch for me

If you dont have Aguero it’s easier to decide and go for it

I have to sell Kun to get Morata and I just know that if I do it will backfire big time

      It’s a punt Im considering.

Aguero and Ings to Morata and Arnautovic.

      Feels so wrong though lol.

Morata should have scored 2 or 3 goals, 4 or 5 if he had scored with every chance he got in that game. But still, he ended up with 5 meagre points.

      He misses too much.

IMO If you plan for your game weeks in advance your likely to have a team of 15 that can be rotated throughout the next four weeks or so, therefor you are likely to have a decent bench.

I think last week has reaffirmed my desire for a strong bench.

That in mind, what do you think of: Quarner & S.Cook > Success & Balbuena for -4pts before Success' price rise prices me out?

I'd have: Ederson, Robbo, Alonso, Balbuena, Doherty, Mane, Salah, Hazard, Fraser, Wilson, Aguero (c). OTB: Steklenburg, Hughes, Success, Wan-B.
