Arsenal got back to winning ways as they saw off Burnley 3-1 in Gameweek 18’s Saturday lunchtime fixture.

With the matches that followed offering little in the way of Fantasy returns, success for managers this week largely depended on which Gunners were owned.

We’ve gone over the top talking points from the Emirates Stadium in this latest Scout Notes article.

Arsenal 3-1 Burnley

Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang x2 (£11.5m), Alex Iwobi (£5.5m) | Ashley Barnes (£5.6m)

Assists: Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6m), Mesut Özil (£8.0m) | Kevin Long (£4.2m)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) owners were rewarded for their patience in Gameweek 18 as the Arsenal striker finally delivered the double-figure haul he has promised for some time. Not surprisingly, no player in Saturday’s match had more shots on target than Aubameyang, which underpinned his success. After comparing favourably in our recent Captain Sensible article, he scored twice in the Gunners’ 3-1 win over Burnley. With the number of chances he was having in recent weeks, Aubameyang had been unlucky not to find the net since the north London derby Gameweek 14. It looked as if his misfortune would continue on Saturday as he was denied by James Tarkowski‘s (£4.7m) goal-saving challenge in the opening minutes. But, in the 13th minute, the Gabonese international broke the deadlock after an excellent clip back from Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m).

That was good news also for those who kept faith in the Bosnian wing-back, as he had been a slight injury doubt ahead of the match. Kolasinac was arguably one of Arsenal’s best players at the Emirates Stadium, constantly asking Burnley questions with surging runs down the left wing and into the opposition box. Indeed, no player created more chances in the game than Kolasinac.

Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6m) started alongside Aubameyang for the second home match in a row. That possibly indicates that Emery does prefer using them together at the Emirates Stadium, rather than when Arsenal are away from home. The Frenchman’s owners may have been hoping for more than just an assist but it was a solid enough performance from Lacazette nonetheless. He looks likely to start against Brighton on Boxing Day as his minutes were managed in the 78th minute, coming off for Alex Iwobi (£5.5m). He wasn’t too happy about it either, visibily annoyed to have been substituted, which also bodes well for his desire to score in Gameweek 19.

“I didn’t see (him being angry). I think he is happy with our victory. He wants to score. When a striker doesn’t score I like he is angry with this situation. He worked very well today. I think he is going back to the best Lacaztte.” – Unai Emery

The fact that Lacazette was brought off with Arsenal leading the game, while Aubameyang was allowed to complete the 90 minutes, does cause some concern for owners of the former Borussia Dortmund man. Unai Emery may have left him on the pitch to avoid denying him a hat-trick, but the fact remains that Aubameyang has now played 270 minutes in the space of seven days. Lacazette getting some time off does mean he could start in his colleague’s place on Boxing Day.

Emery initially lined his Arsenal side up in a 4-3-1-2 formation with Sokratis Papastathopoulous (£5.1m) and Nacho Monreal (£5.4m) at centre-back, Kolasinac and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.4m) flanking them. However, Monreal was forced off with a muscle injury in the 37th minute and had to be replaced by Stephan Lichtsteiner (£4.6m), further adding to Emery’s concerns at the back. At that point, he switched to a back-three with Granit Xhaka (£5.3m) dropping to centre-back alongside Lichtsteiner and Sokratis while Kolasinac and Maitland-Niles pushed on as wing-backs.

“Muscular, we made the change to not take a big risk with him. I don’t know if he can play at Brighton. Koscielny can play and Mustafi is close.” – Unai Emery

The ongoing defensive crisis at Arsenal continues to hurt their clean sheet potential. Coming into Gameweek 18, no team had registered fewer shots on target away from home this season than Burnley. However, the Clarets troubled their illustrious hosts on several occasions, even recording more chances considered to be big by Opta. It was, therefore, no surprise when Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) fired Burnley back into the game in the second half. That means that the main reason Kolasinac has Fantasy appeal is his attacking threat, rather than anything Arsenal can offer defensively.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.7m) and Robbie Brady (£5.4m) were not fit enough to play the match, which forced Burnley into a 5-3-2 formation. While both wide-men could return in Gameweek 19, Sean Dyche may opt to keep that shape when Everton come to Turf Moor on Boxing Day as it did allow his side to attack Arsenal with numbers through the middle. However, we were unable to get any fitness updates from the Clarets manager as the majority of his press conference, doubling up as the one in advance of Gameweek 19, was dominated by his strong opinions on diving in football.

Arsenal XI (4-3-1-2): Leno; Kolasinac; Monreal (Lichtsteiner 37′), Sokratis, Maitland-Niles; Guendouzi, Xhaka, Elneny (Torreira 59′); Özil; Lacazette (Iwobi 78′), Aubameyang.

Burnley XI (5-3-2): Hart; Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Long, Bardsley (Lowton 83′); Hendrick, Cork, Westwood; Wood (Vokes 77′), Barnes (Vydra 77′).

22-25 they have Arsenal and Liverpool and Wolves, Bournemouth away.
All 4 are tricky but fixtures are fine for a while after that

I am done - on both sides it's the decisions like Auba captain and Sterling C this week. A poor rank it's just becoming embarrassing.
A lot less hours of of my life spent on this from not on might be my New Years resolution for a rank climb.

          Harsh.
My first two were Auba and Robertson it was looking good.
Gut only decisions from now on and going to play the hold for 2FT game with no hits. They are a waste of time I usually just cycle back to much the same team in a few weeks anyway.

I will see what happens today. But gone with gut C Alli pick for now.
Problem with this kinda strategy is it works well or on the flip side things get even worse - if possible 🙂

I know your pain dude, each week I'm always trying to pick between sane/sterling and seem to get the wrong one as captain. Ontop of that I've been picking the wrong goalkeeper for about 4 weeks straight. This week it was Foster/Fabianski too. I put way too much thought into it and it backfires anyway. Think I'm just gonna make the decisions in about 2 minutes from now on not 2 hours 🙂

          Again harsh.
I think sticking to your guns and not knee jerking is the way out. That thing called luck does average out over time. Hits and transfers just mess up your chances of levelling out the luck.
50/50 calls are called that for a reason I suppose.

Planning to do Mitro > Rash with one FT...worth getting a united mid as my other transfer?

Almost set on doing Mitro > Rashford but have another FT left.

Which mid would you get rid for martial/pogba:
A: Son (BOU,WOL,car) very threatening when he plays but rotation risk and points might be shared

B: Sane (lei,sot,LIV)..on form, will play 2/3 I reckon, more assist potential then goal threat

C:Anderson (sot,bur,BRI)..talisman for them, nailed on I think

2 FT, 0.4 itb and absolutely no clue what to do:

      Lossl
      Alonso / Robertson / Doherty / AWB
      Salah / F. Anderson / Rich
      Jimenez / Kane / Auba

      Hamer Fraser Bennett Amartey

Assuming Kane and Richarlison dont get injured tonight: Should I hop on the United wagon by upgrading Fraser and downgrading Alonso? Should I bring in a keeper with a tolerable fixture? Maybe get rid of Amartey for someone who doesn't have a broken ankle? Ironically my issue is that my players have really good fixtures for this GW.

Think choosing which defenders to bench will be a major headache for most.

AWB, Doherty, Digne and Kola seem to fight for 2 or 3 places

            Lingard.
Like i said Martial is the best finisher & arguably best talent in the team to.
His link up play with others is just amazing.

Had 2 great chances too and looked good all game.. Worst case scenario is he blanks over the next 3 and you have to get rid cause lukaku returns ..best case scenario.. He hauls over the next 3(HUD, BOU, new!!!), price rises galore, stays in the team and you get a nailed manutd striker in form at 7 million. Worth the punt

Though tbh I'm getting him since I love my midfield and don't want to change anyone(including Camarasa!).. And I have Wilson who I bought at 6.8 who can leave my team for a bit due to poor fixtures and my double up with Fraser @5.5

I currently have Anderson and Kane.. Plan was to keep them both for 3 GWs and then switch to Salah + Ings.. I love that plan tbh. Though Reading all of the above I'm tempted to swap out Anderson for Martial and reassess my plan 🙂

I can understand the Rashford bandwagon, But is Wilson not a good option anymore? I personally can play AWB instead next week so keeping him, I still think Wilson is a season keeper, 2 blanks doesn't change anything.., In fact I would do the move if AWB didn't have a good fixture,I think Rashford will get points but all I'm saying is Wilson will continue to get points like he did too.

Wilson is a great option.. I don't want to. Double up anymore though and I got Fraser at 5.5 and still think he is insane value with his set pieces. No direct replacement for him either.. So Wilson to Rashford for the bad fixture run seems good

I like the chambers shout, playing oop and while Fulham have been awful at the back. The manager has openly said he is focusing steadying the defense and getting cleanies. For his price and to roatate i think he is a good pick

OOP usually means defender plays attacking role. There is 0 attacking treat if you play defending midfield in Fulham.

                    0 Attacking returns.

            Lose Wilson.
You will have a benching headache each week but that should hold you in good stead during this festive period

Martial for McTominay by downgrading Mitro/Wilson? I think he is a better pick than Rash

Wow had a stinker this week with Robertson and Fraser the only players getting me some sort of points. Well, at least United played well to soften the blow. How do you get out of this mess?

      Patricio Fabianski
      Alonso Robertson Doherty Schindler AWB
      Hazard Sane Anderson Fraser Westwood
      Kane Wilson Jimenez

      2FTs and 1.9 itb

Thinking Wilson and Schindler out but for whom?

Watford have some nice fixtures coming up - how about Schindler to Holebas and Fraser to Pereyra?

Great suggestions. Pereyra and Holebas both great options thanks

      Fab, hamer
      Luis, TAA, Delph, kiko, Doherty
Sane, Hazard, F Anderson, Richarlison, Hojberg
      Kane, Lacazette, Wilson

0.6itb. Best transfers to fix this mess?

exact same midfield and forwards here... except wilson I have mitro...

thinking about doing Lacazette > Rashford and
        Alonso > Shaw (for -4)

I agree with DBeck - its a goiod team. I would consider the Laca to Rashford/ANOther and Hojberg (who just got suspended) to Pereyra.

I brought in Martial. First time this season. I needed at least one player with short sleeves and gloves for the holiday fixtures. Call it tradition 🙂 Any others you can recall fondly for that particular look?

lol, I guess hands get colder than arms? I don’t know.

And why do the gloves always need to be black. Like he’s running around out there as the hillside strangler.

If it was me, I’d have Spider-Man gloves on, just to really give people a smile.

With martial I get 4.9 and success is the best at that price point.
