Meet the Manager #12 – Aleksander Våge Nilsen

Being able to visualise future moves has been key to Aleksander Våge Nilsen’s successful Fantasy Premier League career.

Each season he creates a spreadsheet that allows him to see his best line-up in any given Gameweek.

Based around fixtures this bespoke Rate My Team tool has helped Aleksander pinpoint the optimal times to ditch players and the best replacements.

It’s clearly been a great asset in his Fantasy management armoury, with two top 500 finishes, another in the top 2,000 and two overall ranks just outside the top 10,000, to put him fifth in our Live Hall of Fame.

This season his trusty spreadsheet has been particularly fruitful, seeing him rocket to 104thin the world.

During our chat, he also reveals how following top Premier League players on Instagram gives him vital knowledge before deadlines and why having a full squad of players helps him avoid unnecessary hits.

He also explains why Norwegians, who take up 13 of the top 100 places, are so good at FPL and how being a Liverpool fan has proved costly in the past to his overall rank.

Guided by his spreadsheet he also gives a rundown of his next likely moves, with impending blank and double Gameweeks set to influence his decisions.

The chat with Aleksander is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The halcyon days of dgw hauls are a thing of the last imo. Rotation is so rife now it will be hard finding players worth having who are nailed for both games. The obvious candidates will be owned by everyone and even the most casual of casuals will be spoon fed all the info they need.

precisely my concern hence someone like Hazard for TC is perfect for DGWs with most other big players rotation worries

That TC Sanchez haul from a few seasons ago, worth 75 points alone, was my highlight of playing FPL, ever.

Depending on how the doubles fall later in the season I think both Hazard and Kane will be nailed for 2 x 90minutes.

I've avoided captaining Hazard at all this season, except once, just because I find his hauls, or even returns, difficult to predict, I'm hoping him moving back to the wide areas could see him become more prolific.

          Quite possible.
I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to TC Aguero though, never confident in him playing twice in a week...same could be said for any City player though.

Nowadays yes, but that 75 point haul was from the pre-Pep era wasn’t it? The bygone days when rotation was not a worry for Kun.

I've played the TC early the past 3 seasons with Aguero Lukaku and Kane and got scores of 21 9 9 lol. Have yet to click the TC chip. Hoping this is my year.....like Liverpool 🙂

Maybe. Still need to be given attention. Days of making massive gains like back in FFS infancy are probably gone, but that’s part of the growth. Still plenty of opportunities to make ground and if anything, limit any potential damage that can be done. Despite the growth of information, still see a lot in mini leagues missing tricks.

An excellent position to be in. Being able to carry a player Hazard is great. I got rid prior to his hauls in gw16 and I wasn’t happy about it despite going in the right direction since. I don’t get the hate towards him, his returns have been decent and is on my list to get back.

I have 8 green arrows since I sold him. I don't hate but all my cash ML rivals Cing him 3 weeks in a row for blanks was brilliant. 2 double figure scores last 15 weeks for 11m is a bit of a joke in fairness

Think that shows a bigger problem in your rival teams than just Hazard. Timeframes there can be manipulated. 2 double figures in last 7 gws doesn’t seem bad? Sterling had worse, still doesn’t make him a terrible pick. Going forward, a player I want in, who goes and when is the crucial decision

Potentially, they've been around long enough now that people have caught on to the strategy. Changing the chip rules would maybe bring back more variety.

Rotation is rife now but there will be exceptions I think, but the main thing for me is that the good DGW picks are going to be, even more than before, the high priced players from poor teams. The players that poor teams can't afford to rest. Sure the Sterling/Sane/Agueros will get rotation, like they always have the potential to get, but there will still be some players that managers can't afford to rest.

I've got 2 FT and really struggeling to decide what to do with at least 1 of them. Any advice much welcomed.

Players I've thought about moving on are: Alonso, Richarlison & Anderson

Trouble is they all have decent next fixtures, thoughts on:

    A) Alonso > AWB (puts 2.0m itb)

    B) Richalison > Jota (0.8m itb)

    C) Anderson > Jota (1.3m itb)

    D) Anderson > Moura (1.3m itb)

      Salah | Sane | Pogba | Richarlison | Anderson
      Aubameyang | Rashford | Kamara

if Chelsea does get a dgw in 25 as well as city

what would your thoughts be on getting salah out for a week for these moves:

I guess that is the flipside, perhaps we needn't go all out for the dgw, ending up with 6 dgw players then 6 that blank in 27 doesn't sound so wise

I guess FH in 27 is an option, but I presume there's likely to be a bigger blank than gw27

Man city fixture list from 20th Jan to 26th Feb.

They play 9 games within 36 days. Surely we should expect rotation for likes of Sterling and Sane especially latter with Mendy back.

    20th Jan- huddersfeild (PL)
    23rd Jan- Burton (League cup)
    26th Jan- Burnley (FA Cup)
    29th Jan- Newcastle (PL)
    3rd Feb- Arsenal (PL)
    10th Feb- Chelsea (PL)
    20th Feb- Schalke (CL)
23rd Feb- Everton (PL) ??? (rearranged)
    24th Feb- Chelsea(EFL Cup final)
    26th Feb- Westham (PL)

Last thing Pep wants is to burn out Sane with city fighting for all competitions..

People keep saying Sane's form is too good to get rotated. but what you dont realize is pep doesnt give a flying f()k.

He tweaks and changes his team as he pleases regardless of form. you can never predict whats in his mind.

True, would be something like this I guess.

          Kepa(2x)
          Digne(2x), Duffy(2x), AWB
          KDB(2x), Rich(2x), Salah, Hazard(2x), Sane(2x)
          Higuain(2x), Rashford

I dont have any City players, so it would be OK if they played a 90 min + 30 min.
Kepa is nailed, so is Digne and Duffy.
KDB would get atleast a match. Same with Sane. Rich plays both, so does Hazard. Higuain (i have no idea)..
Salah and Rash is there to avoid rankdrop if they haul.

I have Haz, Digne, Richarlison, Button.

I currently have, Sterling, Hazard, Digne, and Richarlison...and Button.

Not sure I'd play Button in a DGW over Lloris (NEW) though.

I might be tempted by one more City/Chelsea player, or potentially look at free hit, but undecided.

      Honestly I'd prefer no DGW25.

Very sad if this is how it ends for Alonso, especially after keeping him for so long through the thick and thin..... If he starts against Sheffield Wednesday then I reckon he's done for as an fpl assett

I think he'll start PL matches as he is the only real areal attacking threat in the Chelsea team.

That was sarris first chance at reaching a cup final in his whole managerial career and he chose Emerson. I'd definitely be worried as an Alonso owner.

Just noticed I have only Digne and Rich from the Blank GW 27 4 teams which is super for the GW 27 but a complete disaster if there is DGW 25.

Am I right in saying if any of the 4 teams blanking in 27, draw in their FA Cup games, then there can't be a DGW 25 due to FA Cup replays?

    1. Amey
      • 5 Years

      Yes.
Chelsea/Brighton or city/everton replay would postpone their dgw.

So if Brighton and Everton both need a replay then there is no DGW 25?

      1. HamezMace

        I think so.

Essentially midweek GW25 is reserved for FA cup replays. So if none of the teams involved in the GW27 have an FA cup replay, potentially they can play their BGW27 fixture - in the midweek 25 slot.

Is Martial (BUR) to Moura (WAT) a waste of a free transfer as that spot is reserved for Son later. Think I'll save. There's need for them transfers in the coming weeks anyway.

Definitely an option, keepers always brilliant for DGWs. Could also look at button if ryan is still away at Asian Cup - means you don't have to throw funds into GK slot if you don't want to?

Perhaps someone could correct me if I'm wrong, but won't there be a far bigger BGW later in the season when the FA QF clashes with PL games - free hit is probably best saved until then.

TC could be an option for potential DGW25 - if you fancy a Chelsea or City asset to go big.

    brighton v west brom

    FA Cup goals

Top 2 in terms of quality and importance are...

*Giggs vs Arsenal in the 99 semi replay
    * Gerrard vs West Ham 06 final

It’s hard to split them, even as a Liverpool fan, the Giggs goal was pure class, probably edges it after that Schmeichel penalty save..

Giggs goal was against superior opposition but Gerrard's goal was by an injured player. Very tough to split them.

I'd also go with the Giggs goal.
As you say, after that Schmeichel save, and the importance as it was the triple season.
...and it was a rare occasion I got to watch a live game, as I didn't have sky when I was a kid...and also the celebration.

I saw Tottenham v West Ham, last derby at the old white hart lane. Spurs won 3-2 with a last minute penalty, that was pretty good.
Also saw the England game against Greece at OT, when Beckham scored the last minute free kick to send us to the WC finals.
          All rank highly.

I also saw the only 0-0 between Man Utd and Newcastle at OT in the mid 90's. They still refer to it every time MU play Newcastle in the league - ''there has only been one 0-0 draw between these two clubs in 25 years'' - I was there!

    Ederson
    Luiz, Digne,Trippier, Bennett, AWB
    Salah,Rich,Alli,Sterling,GibbsWhite
    Jiménez,Firmino,Rash

So alli to d Silva this week free
    Then
    Firmino to Higuain
    Trippier to Alonso/Azpi for -4

    Then
    Reverse transfers for -4

Then shift 2 more players out for blanks for -4

So to have 8 players double with double gameweek

I'd be happy enough with 4-6 DGW players if there is one in 25. You get bogged down in getting players in and out if you try and get too many. Any injury/rotation for your non DGW players could really hurt you

Anyone thinking of getting Lloris in for this coming gameweek since Alli and Kane are out for Spurs?
Also Higuian a viable option since attackers in good form is lacking at the moment.
