It is a short but important week coming up for Fantasy Premier League managers.

There are some big decisions to be made ahead of Gameweek 3 as some prepare to spend their two free transfers, others consider the Wildcard and that’s before we even get on to the captaincy.

So we’ve put together another panel of fine FPL minds to help you with any dilemmas.

Who’s on the panel this week?

Simon March – Former FPL champion who won the title in 2014/15 and has provided excellent advice ever since.

Always Cheating – The USA’s number one FPL podcast duo comprising of Josh and Brandon.

Gregor – Long-time Fantasy Football Scout moderator.

Doosra – Fantasy Football Scout user with some rather popular custom tables.

Genuine question - why do so many people seem to care so much about this?

Stop wasting your time reviewing your mini league ‘rivals’. Focus on playing well to maximise points and the rest will take care of itself.

If you are struggling this early in the season as you can’t work out what your rival has done and copy it, I’ve got some bad news for you....

It’s a completely unnecessary feature in my opinion

Why do we care about anything? Why do we care about watching people kick a ball around some grass? Why do we care about playing an online game which is based around some people kicking a ball around on some grass? Why do we post on a website dedicated to writing comments based on a game which is based on some people kicking a ball around on some grass? Why? WHY?

As somebody who's main league is a H2H league with a load of mates, its really useful to be able to see what your opponent has done. Also can be great, to fool your opponent if you are playing a chip etc.

Hopefully, when looking at other people's Points pages this will only show the Team Values and Numbers of Transfers up to the latest deadline, and not show what has changed since that deadline during the current game-week.

I hope it will also show the Transfer History up to that latest deadline.

I think the current gameweek is exactly what OP wants. To work out what transfers other people made.

Some are for and some against them giving us the info about other teams for the current game-week, but info up to the latest deadline would be useful to all of us without allowing spying on changes during the current game-week.

Whatever the OP wanted, I would prefer the latter.

Hopefully that is the way fpl will do this going forward RL.

If they just cave to the pressure to make it the way it was before well then fpl will have missed a opportunity to make the game fairer and more interesting imo.

All of what you've asked for is currently available on the FPL website. Gameweek history shows the number made and cost of transfers, and the /transfers/ page is available but not actually linked for every player.

Both of those bits of data are only for the previous gameweek, not the current live gameweek.

So if they are "introducing" just that, then they aren't changing anything except adding some links and placing existing text in a different place.

...lucky you...I got a stupid answer to my question as to why Triggerlips had a TV of 100.3m after the first game in week 1...

FPL basically waited until they corrected the error and then simply said : ''according to our records the team had a value of 100m at the end of week 1"....they will never admit to any hiccups.

    The Review - GW 2

Having written a piece on how the action unfolded in GW 1, I once again cast my eyes on the Premier League action played this weekend. Here are 8 important takeaways for FPL managers post GW 2:

    1) Much has been said of the Liverpool defence since the season began but the signs of regression are apparent. Liverpool are ranked 6th worst for xGc (expected goals conceded) and have conceded 5 big chances in two favorable fixtures so far. That was unthinkable a year ago, but it must be kept in mind that their full backs are still posting good numbers. Robertson has the highest number of touches in the final third of all defenders in the league. Meanwhile, Trent is ranked 2nd for big chances created of all
    players in the league.

    2) Sheffield United and Man Utd both had an xGc (expected goals conceded) of just 0.27 over the weekend. Both defences gave up minimal shots inside the box including zero big chances to their opponents, which was very impressive given that Sheffield United are a promoted side while Man United have historically struggled against Wolves. Worth noting that Sheffield United’s opponents, Palace, are now up against Man United so Man United on paper are looking good for a clean sheet.

    3) Out of all defenders who have played 180 minutes so far, no defender has been accumulating bonus at a faster rate than Aston Villa’s Ahmed El Mohammady - his minutes per baseline baps ratio is an incredible 3.9. Brighton’s Lewis Dunk and Man United’s Aaron Wan Bissaka have a really impressive ratio for bonus as well and should be amongst the points
whenever their side is to keep a clean sheet.

    4) Leandro Trossard was Brighton’s most advanced player in the game vs West Ham. He recorded the highest number of shots inside the box in the game, including one big chance. Montoya once again was involved in the final third, and even created one big chance but was unlucky not to get an assist.

    5) No forward has had as many shots inside the box as Teemu Pukki over the first two weeks. He sits joint top for big chances as well, with Ashley Barnes the only other forward with as many big chances. £4.5 Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell sits 2nd for midfielders for chances created as well, suggesting that there could be plenty of bargains from the men at Carrow Road.

    6) A look at the xGc table (expected goals conceded) for matches played so far shows the very familiar sight of Man City sitting top with least xGc and shots in the box conceded. A closer look at the table further suggests that the Everton defence with an xGc of 2.18 (with 0 goals actually conceded) is overperforming while the Watford defence with an xGc of 1.51 (with 4 goals actually conceded) is underperforming.

    7) No player in the league has created as many chances as Kevin De Bruyne so far. His numbers for chance creation are astounding as he has already created 12 chances, including 5 big chances in just over 2 games – one of them against a top 6 side. Of all players in the league who have started 2 games, De Bruyne ranks best for bonus accumulation with his minute per bps ratio sitting at an unworldly 3.1. An interesting point to note is that he was the most advanced player on the field against Spurs which coincided with David Silva missing out. With David Silva in the team, he was playing considerably deeper and posted inferior stats to when the Spaniard was left out. Could be a trend, could be an anomaly – I guess we need more data to find out.

    8) Bournemouth are ranked 3rd worst in the xGc table (expected goals conceded), which is extremely telling because they have will face far more potent attacks than the likes of Sheffield United’s and Villa’s that they have faced so far. With City ranked comfortably best for expected goals scored (and Sterling ranked highest for big chances of all players in the league), this could be a fixture where the likes of De Bruyne and Sterling look primed for points. With Sterling having an incredible record against Bournemouth and form to back it up, he looks to be the best captaincy option on paper.

Thanks for taking the time out, I hope you enjoyed the read!

This is rapidly becoming my favourite weekly content on the site! Thanks again FantasyFreak.

Btw - nice point on Sterling against Bournemouth but one question: do you think it may actually be because Bournemouth were playing sides they expected to beat that they left themselves so open? Just thinking that the last two seasons City have actually relied on last gasp winners down there (Sterling 2 years ago; Mahrez last year). Last year in particular, Bournemouth were so defensive they didn’t register a single shot or even get a corner.

On the other hand, Newcastle look pretty demoralised and face golden boot favourite Kane at his new stomping ground. I’m leaning towards this!

Highly value your feedback mate thank you! 🙂

That's a very interesting point you raise. I think the 0-1 win came at a time when City were fine with grinding out wins. With the chances they are creating right now (coinciding with De Bruyne being in supreme form), I expect them to score quite a few - particularly if they get an early goal.

Yeah you’re right. I just checked and they were disrupted by losing KDB and Stones to big injuries during the game too. For what it’s worth, I’ve also looked at Bournemouth’s defence at home from last season - stats are not great reading for them! I was thinking Kane was a no brainer this week, not so sure now

Was gonna go Salah over Sterling for the captaincy but that last point makes a compelling case for Sterling, seems a no brainer reading that

Said that about KDB yesterday, going all 'FIFA' I'd say his points potential is much greater in the CAM position than the RCM position, he will get points obv but wait and see for me

away to Bournemouth is much different to being at home to them too, Sterling obv a good shout but unsure they will batter them

Incredibly insightful post, thanks for sharing. This would make a great regular community article.

      1. Needs to be a "proper" article rather than a community article which are shoved out of the way, get pretty much no promotion, and are probably missed by most. Feel sorry for those who take the time to produce these (usually) decent articles which are pound-for-pound probably better than the staff articles.

      Fantastic TFF as usual

On Bournemouth, I think they will concede a lot of chances relative to most other teams if not all ... over the season. For this weekend though, I think they are in a good place to give City a game: they have 4 points on the board (going well) and they have quality players all over their team who are in good form: Ake, Fraser, Wilson come to mind.

City are almost guaranteed to score in every game against all teams bar Pool but I think Bournemouth could score in this one as well. City would settle for another 2-1 win; I don’t think Bournemouth will get hammered.

Vardy an Perez both could drop in price making it more difficult to get in KDB and probably making 3 moves instead of two.

KDB could very well score more points than Perez and Vardy combined again. Not expecting a hattrick from Vardy, SHU have looked solid and are tough to beat at home.

City are phenomenal though , so don't read to much into that , I do like Son, But Kane will always be the main man at Spurs and he will really punish the lesser teams I.e Newcastle

      I agree.
Defensively Newcastle as are bad as they come in the PL so far this season.
Last seasons rule of captaining whoever is playing Huddersfield, now applies to Newcastle.

      1. Dr. Mantis Toboggan
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 4 months ago

Admittedly haven't watched them yet, but what makes you say this? Stats-wise they don't look as bad as I would have expected defensively, and it's not like they had easy defensive fixtures.

        1. HamezMace
          • 11 Years
          6 years, 4 months ago

          Yeah it's from watching them
Newcastle shouldn't be conceding three goals to Norwich.

Pukkis second goal, he had more time in the box to get his shot away than he would have had in the Championship last season.
..and his third goal, honestly school boy defending, they looked completely out of position, not committed to putting their bodies on the line, and just basically not interested.

That's just an eye test review, I'm not that into stats based defensive numbers.

I'm hoping Newcastle will set up more like they did against Arsenal where they limited Arsenal to a couple of chances. I'd imagine Kraft is dropped after his poor debut and Longstaff comes back into midfield instead of Ki which hopefully means that there'll be more urgency.

Having said all that, I expect Spurs to win.

I mean even against Norwich they were deep, that's one of the reasons they struggled, they couldn't get out of their own half as they just lumped it forward to Joelinton, who had no support and was easily disposed.
If Spurs can score early, it'll be 4 or more.

True. One of Rafa's strengths was setting us up to avoid hidings by the big teams and sticking to the plan.

                  It was.
Despite the preconceptions that Bruce is a more defensive minded manager, he's really not the best at setting a team up to defend well.

Talk about a herd mentality. All teams similar GW1 and now all wildcarding. Great to see it. If not wildcarding then already used transfers and taking hits on a Monday/Tuesday. Absolute sheep. Does anyone play their own way anymore?

Price rises have necessitated a lot of early moves... I think it's okay to be aggressive in early weeks but as long as it's best for your team 🙂

No players or teams can have form in two games. Better of taking a few hits at this stage, wildcard will km be much more valuable after a couple of months when the boys and men, football wise, are clear.

I play another game without the transfer rises feature and you play that completely different. The transfer market creates the herd mentally because building (and protecting) team value is incredibly important for the 2nd half of the season.

In this game I'm bringing in Barnes & Pukki, I'm fairly confident both are poor to average picks benefitting from statistical variance. Make bank and move on.

In the other game the strategy is about maximising points. My transfers are more long term, minimising hits and I'm bringing in Kean & Haller as I genuinely think they are the mid-priced strikers to own if you look over the next 10 GWs.

Yup, maybe I'm getting all sensible in my old age but there seems to be some shocking wildcard teams posted on here today! Pure kneejerk unnecessary ones, the vast majority!

Early WC is a totally valid option though - build team value early and capitalise on high volumes of players. Also helps to clean up any f*#% ups when picking teams based on pre- season. Just saying for balance.

      1. Of course - if your team needs it then play it - I'm just pointing out something to consider if torn between playing it and taking a couple of hits 🙂

Depends on what state your squad is in, whether a wildcard would improve your squad more if played now or if saved till nearer Christmas, and how many hits you would need to take or how many points you would miss if you don't play your wildcard.

Either play the wildcard now and take the hits later or take the hits now and play the wildcard later.

      1. Absolutely - lots to consider, and not a decision to be taken lightly 🙂

What if you are only on 120 points now? What if you can increase TV whilst catching some bandwagons now? What if you are using tour wildcard to try and get ahead now, rather than using it later to catch up?

      1. I would love to be on 120 points now! My initial team wasn't just for the first 2 GWs though, and I knew my team would struggle on paper GW2 - hoping that playing the long game will work out....

      Fraser + TAA + Guilbert --> KDB + WBA + Soyunku

Had to take a -4 to ship out Guilbert before he dropped in price.

Well, I like to think -4 for Guilbert :-P. Just that I feel Pool may concede in their next 3/4 games while KDB is in red hot form and didn't want to miss getting him in. Sacrificing KDB was the only way to get KDB along with three other big hitters. Let's see the next couple of weeks will tell if I'm wise or a fool!

it is quite possible, I'm just worried Poch goes maverick - he could play Lamela instead of Eriksen again too, Lamela didn't play great against City but no-one did really, good otherwise and great in preseason

As a Spurs fan, I don't think Son will start the game. Moura is 50/50, but I think he'll feature from the start. FWIW, I'll have him in my team and am holding. Even off the bench he could be good value against tired legs.

I think it's possible and they definitely should play both. Yes Lamela has scored and assisted, but otherwise I think he's lost the ball a lot and don't rate him over Lucas. Son on his own level. For the coming fixture I'd say it's still quite possible Son comes in from the bench, but after that:

      Ndombele Sissoko
      Lucas Eriksen Son
      Kane

      Here is mine fwiw

      Pope 4.0
      AWB VvD Zinchenko KWP Lundstram
      Sterling Mané KDB Ceballos Cantwell
      Kane Barnes Greenwood.

Not happy with KWP and really pissed off Im 0.5 short of doing KWP+Cantwell to Kelly+Trossard (or Mount). That 6.0 mid would be a place holder for CHO from GW7, maybe.

I want a def from both Manchester teams. So it’s Digne or VvD. Prefer a Pool than and Everton def.

Used 1 FT Haller out Jota in after GW1.

1 FT Heaton out Villa Defence not going to do him any favours with Pope in after GW2.

No other changes, WC still in tact

    But

-8 hit to bring in KDB and Pukki for Vardy and Perez, is that knee-jerk with KDB price bound to rise again and Pukki price rocketing plus Vardy and Perez price surely to fall.

Keeping TAA & VVD cuz have other pressing issues. If I could spare a FT, VVD would be gone, but I'm definitely not taking a hit to sell him when I'll probably want him back soon.

Sold Robbo and Locadia for Pukki and Zinch for GW2

I was scared as hell until Pukki's hat trick. I still don't know if it's the best move long term, but keeping one (TAA) could be enough for rank safety when they get some clean sheets again. The ownership needs more than a couch

good to see some patience on here. I did wilson to Pukki and looking to roll my other transfer. The only other move I like is Moura to KDB but can only do it with a hit (Haller to Barnes pr VVD to AWB) so not keen on it this week. If Haller isnt confirmed fit to start my hand may be forced

I am. I did Barkley, Townsend, and Vardy to Ceballos, Cantwell, and Kane for a -4. Generally, I take very few hits, but with the prices changing so quickly, I wanted to get Barkley and Vardy out and get Ceballos and Cantwell in. I also finally decided that Palace simply may not score this entire season and that Kane vs Newcastle was too tasty to ignore.

So, in the end, I think I'm happy with a -4...until it bites me in the butt, of course.

Bit more to it than that! Son hasn't played yet so form isn't clear nor is his starting spot guaranteed atm. Happy to captain Kane this week, wouldn't captain Son for the reasons I just mentioned. Kane is a 200 point per season player, Son's highest score is 178. Most minutes Son has got in a season is 2200, Kane starts pretty much every week when fit. Kane takes penalties, Son doesn't. Son can get subbed early, Kane less so.

Anyhow, would like to have Son but not atm

There seems to be doubt out there as to whether he will start but for me it's a total no brainer to be honest - see my thoughts in other post below

Basically He's head & shoulders above Lamela & Moura as a forward

Crucially they'll likely want him with at least one game under his belt before arsenal - what better way to warmn up for the Derby than Newcastle 🙂

Last season between GW11 and GW 22 (until Kane got injured), Son got 8 goals and 6 assists, Kane got 9 goals and 3 assists. That was pretty much when Spurs were running hot. Son blanked three times during this period but started on the bench twice. If this is anything to go by then Spurs are running hot when both Son and Kane are.

After GW22 Son got 3 goals in 3 games and then Spurs fell off a cliff. For the record, in the last 11 game weeks Son got 1 goal and 1 assist (and 1 red card!)

He's their best pacy forward by quite some distance - and well rested

it does, but the story is incomplete, it depends on the available pool of mids and strikers IMO - head to head, and in form, Son does win - think everyone knows this anyway

Son was incredible when in form, but when he wasn't, a different story. He seemed to be better without Kane on some occasions also.

Now they have Ndombele, but also Lucas in form. Eriksen is also fit now, but there are some question marks.

That run of poor form coincided with a massive dip in Spurs general performances tho. If you back them to do well, hard to see Son not involved.

I was thinking earlier would the new central mids inadvertently help Kane this season in terms of him not being required to drop as deep

But to be honest, even if he is lumped up front, son looks too good to turn down for a Salah Sterling team - he's so dangerous and effectively a striker

What are your thoughts on Sonny versus Kevin?

KDB looks pretty non-negotiable at the minute - he's next level

It is a coin toss imo. If Son is in form, he is probably better option. Goals are 5 pts and assists only 3 pts.

I also believe that Captain Silva will play easier games and "steal"
some assists from KdB. (At least this is a possibility mentioned by Markus here.) We may(?) find out later, but very similar points for both is a possibility.

Id put KDB ahead of him at the minute - purely because he IS currently in firm and IS currently turbo nailed

But I think come next Monday Son will have made a big splash that will have a lot of folks pondering this question and possibly fluttering even more wildcards

When both are in top form, son shades it though, he scores hattricks from midfield at this best

Yeah that’s true but that’s also something you gotta take into account, the players aren’t in top form all the time, and so longer term Kevin might still edge him... Quite tough to have a midfield of Salah/Sterling/Son/KDB which I would like to have...

It’s easy with no premium striker. So the choice comes down to Kane or Son
