Liverpool and Manchester City options are the key figures in the Gameweek 5 captaincy debate.

It’s a familiar story for Fantasy Premier League managers as the first international break of the season comes to an end.

There are favourable fixtures for both of last year’s top two sides, meaning that we must dig right down into the statistics to work out who the best captain option is.

In this latest Captain Sensible article, we will assess the results of the poll, assess the form of the key candidates and compare them against the defensive performances of their upcoming opponents.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area only those who have signed up for 2019/20 will have full access.

Captain Poll

The captain poll as of Thursday morning

After a relatively promising start to the campaign, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) tops the captain poll ahead of Gameweek 5 when Newcastle will visit Anfield.

As of Thursday morning, the Egyptian has the support of 34.5% in the vote, 11% more than any other option.

Salah has been particularly impressive at home so far this season, scoring 12 points against Norwich on opening night before netting a brace for 15 points in a Gameweek 3 meeting with Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have conceded three times in away matches so far.

The current poll runner-up is Raheem Sterling (£12.3m) with the support of 23.5% of our voters.

That makes him the most popular Manchester City man for the captaincy ahead of a hugely appealing trip to Norwich on Saturday evening.

Despite a surprising blank at home to Brighton in Gameweek 4, Sterling remains the second-highest FPL scorer so far this season.

His 37 points have come from five goals, two clean sheets and four bonus and, as things stand, he is behind only Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) in the race for the Premier League golden boot (five goals).

Despite the Argentinian’s current goal-tally (six), having netted in every match so far, just 14.8% are considering him for the captaincy in Gameweek 5.

However, deciding between Aguero and Sterling this weekend could prove to be much of a muchness when you consider Norwich’s defence.

The Canaries have conceded more goals than any other side so far this season (10) and have a number of personnel problems in key areas with a handful of defenders and defensive midfielders out injured.

It is no surprise then, that Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m) is also in the picture as the most popular of the differential options.

Just 4.3% voted for the Belgian in the poll but that small number may be on to something here.

De Bruyne has firmly re-established himself in the Manchester City team following a torturous 2018/19 campaign and has been in excellent form thus far.

He assisted in each of the first four matches and scored against Brighton to boot averaging nine points per game over that period. Against a ragtag Norwich defence, that trend could easily continue.

Pushing his way back into the differential thinking is Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) who was backed by 3.9% for the Gameweek 5 armband.

Newcastle have not been particularly ruthless in front of goal this season, scoring three goals in four matches, while Liverpool showed signs against Burnley that they had solved some of their defensive problems from earlier in the campaign.

Fantasy managers will fancy Alexander-Arnold for a clean sheet this weekend then, while the right-back has been the most creative of his defensive colleagues, registering three assists so far.

Sadio Mané (£11.5m) is also considered among the left-field options, garnering 3.4% support in the Gameweek 5 captain poll, although he is yet to record any attacking returns at home this season.

Despite underwhelming in his last two outings, Harry Kane (£12.5m) is still in the picture to some extent, with 3% backing him for the armband ahead of Crystal Palace’s short trip to north London.

Sébastien Haller (£7.5m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

My god all these teams are all the same! Where are all the Pepes, Aubas, Sons, Wilsons, Kings , Lanzinis, Anderson's, Eriksens? Where's the risk, where's the excitement?

It's like a reddit echoe chamber in here. Yes your team is fine to most here... it's the same team essentially from user A through to user Z. If you sincerely enjoy this templatey approach, more power to you. Not for me and many others. Miss the older days on here!

        Cheers for the reply.

I'm not seeing the alternative looking teams as much anymore. Not saying they don't exist but they're not being posted. Arsenal, Spurs, Bournemouth and Everton all have good fixtures too.

Seasons gone would have seen a bit more variation in picks. Player base has increased so there's a lot of clone teams out there.

Could we maybe sacrifice someone like Salah or Sterling and spread the cash? Having Salah Sterling DeBruyne Aguero eat the funds forces picks like James and Mount. Just feels so uninspired

          • 10 Years

Not many even own all four of Salah, Sterling, KDB, and Aguero. If you own three of them, why would you downgrade any of them to the inferior options you've mentioned? Stop picking players for ownership reasons.

I say it more for budget reasons but yes your point stands.

Your post was nothing about budget. It was clearly centered around everyone having the same players and hence lacking excitement. Budget is the reason why I'm currently not picking the likes of Auba, Pepe, or Son because I can't afford them along with the superior Pool and City assets.

City and Liverpool domination definitely reduced excitement around picks. I think it would be very hard to ignore those teams and make progress this season

    2. Cok3y5murf
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 11 months ago

All inferior options to Pool and City assets. Ownership is irrelevant.

Wilson is great but has cheaper alternatives. King is rubbish. Lanzini is meh. Anderson's alright.

      1. Mighty Quinn
        • 11 Years
        6 years, 11 months ago

What's left then after those assets? Feels very vanilla to just stack up on those 2 teams.

Let's hope other teams start showing promise. Or it'll be a dull season.

          • 10 Years

Not getting points would be vanilla for me. To each his own, I guess.

You're "hoping" they'll show promise whereas I'm just choosing who is actually showing promise.

Agree man. I haven't posted my true WC draft because I know it'll get torn apart because of my differentials.

I suppose everybody plays this game differently. Following the template will give you a solid rank and most likely win ML's against your mates. However, it's also pretty boring and I'd personally feel like a bit of a fraud. I like my defence to be pretty 'templatey' but I've got to have a few exciting picks mixed in there.

I'm on WC and bring in Eriksen as he already dropped 0.2 and has good stats.

Also not many people mention Ayew, they stuck in Greenwood for 3rd striker while he is a deadwood for me (1 point each game). I give my 0.5 for Ayew and bench him this weekend but welcome to double home games after that.
Can you believe Palace only score 3 and 2 of them from Ayew. Also 6 baps from 2 games and one of them came at Old Trafford.

    VVD, TAA, Zinchenko, Digne, Lundstram
    Sterling, Salah, Mount, Cabellos, Dendonk
    Vardy, King, Greenwood

    1.7m in the bank

Was thinking a straight swap Vardy > Haller due to Leicester fixtures, which would give me 3.1m in the bank (although not sure what to spend it on the week after)

Another alternative would be to do Vardy > Aguero and find the 1.5m needed by downgrading VVD to a 5m defender for a 4 point hit.

    Any thoughts appreciated

Martial has never been a good fantasy asset. never will be.

Don't let anyone tell you differently.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw have all been ruled out of tomorrow's game against Leicester at Old Trafford.

Diogo Dalot will also miss the match, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jesse Lingard are doubts.

Rashford out for a hit is getting more and more tempting. Ditch for Vardy / Haller / Barnes?

      Not worth it

My sensible brain agrees. Zouma and Rash > Lowton and Vardy -4 is really tempting me though

Do you reckon vardy will score 2 or more tomorrow? If not, it's probably not worth it

Why does he need to score 2? Rash blank and Vardy goal pays it back?

lol nice. I'd much prefer Vardy going forward, so doing it now means I have an additional transfer to play with next week.

I’d personally want Digne and think Mane can cover Salah. Especially with pools run

I prefer accuracy - nuanced shades of grey are reality. I thought this article was terrific. Just my 2 cents.
