Wolves 1-0 Bournemouth

  • Goals: Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m)
  • Assists: Adama Traoré (£5.8m)
  • Bonus Points: Jiménez x3, Jonny x2 (£5.4m), Willy Boly x1 (£4.8m), Romain Saïss x1 (£4.6m)

Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m) highlighted his consistency once again as Wolves beat Bournemouth 1-0 but he was not at his usual scintillating best.

The Mexican was arguably on the periphery of Wednesday’s encounter as both sides struggled to offer much for the neutral viewers. While it was a surprisingly dull game, proceedings at Molineux were hardly out of step with other Gameweek 31+ fixtures around the country. Given the circumstances of the Premier League’s three-month lay-off, it makes sense that the midweek round of action would come too soon after Gameweek 30+ for many players to be at 100% capacity.

That said, despite Nuno Espirito Santo deploying him as the central spearhead of Wolves’ 3-4-3 formation, Jiménez found himself drifting wide on occasion at Molineux and, in the end, scored with his only shot of the game.

Will that be of huge concern to his 34.2% ownership with Aston Villa up next? Surely not. The best players in the world manage to score even when they’re having a bad game, right? Jiménez now has four goals in his last five league matches and remains one of the few undroppable options at Nuno’s disposal.

Just as we saw against West Ham, the Mexican stayed on the pitch for 90 minutes, replaced in stoppage time by Daniel Podence (£5.0m), while those around him had their minutes managed more significantly. With nobody else in the squad capable of replicating his duties, another short turnaround before Saturday’s Midlands derby is unlikely to affect Jiménez’s game-time, especially considering how well he has coped with a busy 12 months. There will also a be a full week of recovery for Wolves between their Gameweek 32+ and 33+ fixtures to sit at the back of Nuno’s mind.

Diogo Jota (£6.4m) made a second successive start and, despite another spirited run-out, was replaced by Pedro Neto (£5.0m) on the hour-mark with another blank. The fact that has happened in both Project Restart matches demonstrates how much extra value Fantasy managers get even when spending an additional £1.8m on Jiménez.

Meanwhile, Adama Traoré (£5.8m) got his first start since the resumption of the Premier League but was taken off in a shape-change to 3-5-2 in the 72nd minute. That said, the Spaniard does look a more reliable form of investment than Jota, arguably a decent option to pair with Jiménez in our FPL squads. While Wolves were not particularly incisive against Bournemouth, Traoré’s pace and delivery led to him registering a carbon copy of the assist for Jiménez he provided at the London Stadium. Until someone learns how to deal with him, or the aerial threat of Wolves’ centre-forward, Traoré is sure to get more attacking returns.

However, making the case that he should feature in FPL squads as part of a triple-up continues to be complicated by Wolves’ excellent defence, who face an Aston Villa side in Gameweek 32+ that has toiled in front of goal so far.

It has been widely reported that Nuno’s men have become exceptionally hard to break down since Willy Boly (£4.8m) returned from injury but we will wheel it out once more. They have now kept a total of six clean sheets from a possible following the defender’s Gameweek 25 comeback. For that reason, Matt Doherty (£6.4m), Romain Saïss (£4.6m) and Rui Patrício (£5.2m) remain excellent options for the foreseeable future. Moroccan defender Saïss is still persistently proving great value, picking up bonus points for the third match in succession despite earning a booking against Bournemouth. That was his ninth yellow card of the season, so owners should be conscious that one more would mean a two-match ban.

Wolves defensive credentials are firmly established at this point but they were helped on this occasion by Bournemouth’s anaemic attack. Following their toothless display against Crystal Palace, Eddie Howe went for a 4-5-1 formation with Junior Stanislas (£5.9m) and David Brooks (£6.2m) on the flanks. They could not make up for the absence of Joshua King (£6.1m) though, which left Callum Wilson (£7.4m) isolated in the lone-forward role.

Fantasy managers were probably already targeting the Bournemouth attack on their search for clean sheets, but the appeal of Newcastle, Manchester United and Spurs defenders certainly rose after Bournemouth’s latest outing, as they are set to face them in the next three Gameweeks. Backlines of the Magpies and Red Devils will be especially pleased with Wilson picking up his 10th yellow of the season, consigning him to a two-match ban.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Saiss, Coady, Boly; Jonny, Neves, Moutinho (Gibbs-White 90+1’), Doherty; D Jota (Neto 62’), Jiménez (Podence 90’), Traoré (Dendoncker 73’).

Bournemouth XI (4-5-1): Ramsdale; A Smith, Aké, S Cook, Stacey (L Kelly 82’); Stanislas (Danjuma 66’), Lerma (Solanke 66’), L Cook, Billing (Gosling 50’), Brooks (H Wilson 66’); C Wilson.

Chasing a rival who is 50 ahead and has a FH left.
Looking for differentials to make up ground. I have BB left.

    Pope Hendo
    TAA Doherty Gomez Taylor Basham
    Salah KDB Bruno Son Cantwell
    Dcl Jimenez Jota

    1 Ft 0.4 itb

Thoughts on KDB + Cantwell > Martial + Pulisic?

If you really want differentials then the below players all fit the bill:

      - Mahrez
      - Martial
      - Abraham
      - Perez (Leicester midfielder)
      - Traore

In defence you can consider AWB, Fernandez (Newcastle defender) and Alonso.

Pulisic is not a player you would want if chasing 50 points behind and it means benching Jota or DCL? Chelsea are so difficult to read, both in terms of who starts but also performances.

KDB is tricky, kind og tough game vs Pool and then a game very fast after that (4 games in 9 days), and you would expect him to start today, he will most probably start in the cup and Pep don´t want to give title away at Etihad, then it is Southampton just 2 full days after. My bet is his minutes will be managed so a calculated risk could be a route. But i think that perhaps is enough?

Because you take a hit for Puli, which means you play him over either DCL or Jota, who got Lei (a tough game but not impossible to get returns) or Villa away? So, Martial perhaps and then re-evaluate after next week.

I make ground up by picking up swords.

What this means is doubling/tripling up on strong teams. So instead of just having TAA + Salah, adding Mane. Or adding Mahrez to go with KdB. Or having double wolves defense.

That sort of thing. Decide which team you think is best to double down on and do that.

my double up with Doerty and Jota have no lost 7 points over Boly and Jimi and it looks like Jota (not surprisingly) gets around the hour in every game, which is somewhat nervously if you cap as you would be mentally very agile in the first half if nothing happens. And Wolves, while in good form, not always the most high scoring team. Villa seems to have at least a fighting spirit left and are better in defence than they were, i have no qualms about playing Jota, but i will cap Auba vs Norwich. Vice on Fernandes. That gubble gubble speak about captaincy i really don´t get. If i cap Auba and vc Fernandes that is as safe as it can get in terms of getting at least one that starts.

Any obvious move here? Should I go after Martial? 1FT, 0.3itb. Also should I leave the armband on Mo?

    TAA • Doherty • Kiko
    Salah • Son • KDB • Bruno
    Jimenez • DCL • Rashford

hm, would that be martial for KDD then? With it being Liverpool an dthen Southampton just 2 days after, perhaps now is the time to get rid? But then again you would want City assets after that Saints game (mabe also for that game if you can pick the one who would start)?

Nah, Salah vs City, i think i would rather Rash cap and Jimi vc with that team?

I´m not fully confident in having triple United attack, yes they beat a decimated SHU but even in that win you did not get much from Fernandes. To me, 2 attackers and a defender if you want three is marginally better. In that sense, it could be better version to have United def and possibly Mahrez in that KDB spot? Mahrez is certainly a risk, but he is also very explosive. And you have cap options aplenty. i do see the value in going 3 cheap defender rotation.

Save FT - Martial won’t get a hattrick every game.

Captaincy is really tough this week. I’m a heavy Salah captainer usually but don’t think I’ll have it on him this week.

First time i have seen Pogba playing like a team player, he seemed pretty content/happy tbh.

I think Fred and McTominay improved well under Ole, but I agree, they need one more addition there too.

As for Sancho, can't see it happening tbh

They need Sancho and a mobile defensive midfielder to replace Matic. Then switch to 4-3-3

      De Gea
      AWB Lindelof Maguire Shaw
      Fernandes ????? Pogba
      Sancho Martial Rashford

      Romero
      Dalot Bailly Tuanzebe Williams
      Fred Matic McTominay
      James Ighalo Greenwood

Sell: Lingard, Mata, Jones, Smalling, Sanchez, Rojo

I think they need a better destroyer than Fred or McTominay and a better option on the RW than Greenwood.

      Imagining:

      Rashford Martial Sancho
      Bruno Pogba
      Kante

That's a title contending team I think. But yeah with Matic/Fred/McTominay and Greenwood in those two slots, it's not really good enough imo. They can be good squad players but can't make the first team for a contending team.

Still some question thats begs asking, centerback pairing, left back, central midfield is not dynamic and fluid enough. They have taken steps in the attacking part of the play, and Martial with good service is a clinical striker. Greenwood is close to be as good as it gets, still young though so they might need one attacker/wing of class.

That makes zero sense. You're saying when the teams are unpredictable...and teams have less to play for...thats the best time to use your free hit chip. I'll make this clear - you are less likely to be able to select a full XI as many of the players will be benched

Yeah and those points all still apply if you don't free hit, your previously strong team gets ravaged by rotation. FH in 38 gives you the ability to switch out first teamers for those more likely to play. Most importantly there's usually team leaks and all matches start at the same time.

No that part is in your head, you freehit at the end because you can tell which teams have something to play for, there's more leaks, every game kicks off at the same time etc. I'm not doing it myself but I can see why it could work

    Who scores more?

    A) Mount (whu)
    B) Sarr (SOU)
    C) Martial (bha) -4

I'm quite tempted to go for C because it would remove my benching headache.

How is everyone's team shaping up for the run in?

I'm thinking a defence-heavy team is the way to go due to rotation, plus a solid bench for the same reasons.

From GW33, my team for the run-in will likely be a 4-3-3, something like below (Alonso only question mark).

    McCarthy
TAA- VVD - Doherty - Alonso
    Salah - Fernandes - KDB
    Jiminez - Rashford - DCL

    Krul / Saka - Lascelles - Holgate

KDB is essential. And Sterling is my differential. Kun is out and Sane looks out of favour. Plus Pep loves Sterling and his fitness. I can see him getting good amount of minutes and an occasional false 9 as Jesus won't play every game. Also City are in great form and they've amazing fixtures from GW33+.
