Fantasy Premier League managers must decide between the best options at Manchester United and Liverpool for the Gameweek 33+ captaincy.

The two clubs come into this next round of action atop the popularity charts for the armband, but there is still plenty to decipher when picking the right skipper.

As ever, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you do that with data comparisons of each candidate’s statistical form, as well as that of their upcoming opposition’s defences.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can read it in full.

Captain Poll

So soon after letting down his followers in the 3-0 win over Sheffield United, Bruno Fernandes (£8.8m) is back at the top of the captain poll once again.

A blistering double-figure haul in Gameweek 32+ has handed the Manchester United man 34.5% of the vote this week.

Despite that Gameweek 31+ blank, the Portuguese midfielder has a remarkably consistent record since joining the Red Devils. In eight Premier League appearances, Fernandes has already racked up five goals, three assists and, as far as we know, retains control of the club’s penalties.

An unfortunate blank at Manchester City on Thursday night was not enough to stop the support of Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) for the Gameweek 33+ captaincy.

 1

The Egyptian was denied early by Ederson (£6.0m) and the post as Liverpool crashed to a 4-0 defeat, a result that 19.5% of our voters are convinced will produce a fierce backlash when Aston Villa come to Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Indeed, Salah is a reliable asset at home, averaging 10 points per game in his last six league matches there. An improved Aston Villa defence stands in his way for Gameweek 33+, but Dean Smith’s men have only kept one clean sheet since they tightened things up.

Solid returns in their last home match are enough for Anthony Martial (£8.2m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) to act as differential options for the captaincy in this poll.

The Frenchman scored a hat-trick against Sheffield United, 10.5% of the voters reading more into that than his Gameweek 32+ shotless blank at Brighton.

Meanwhile, Rashford’s midweek two-pointer has done little to weaken the resolve of the 8.6% backing the England international, who registered two assists in his last home outing.

Despite coming into a Gameweek 33+ meeting with Crystal Palace devoid of form, Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) completes the top-five but is unlikely to play a huge part in the debate. He has two goals since Gameweek 19 and is backed by just 4.1% of our voters.

Kevin De Bruyne‘s (£10.7m) latest world-class performance has not been enough to allow him entry into the top-five for the latest captaincy popularity contest, perhaps on account of playing 90 minutes against Liverpool, and a quick turnaround before the Southampton game.

Those interested in the Liverpool attack do seem to be presented with an opportunity for serious gains if the performance of Sadio Mané (£12.5m) in this poll is anything to go by. Just 2.7% of our voters have backed him for the Gameweek 33+ armband.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m), Mason Greenwood (£4.4m), Harry Kane (£10.9m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.1m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

I can easily see both being benched as much as starting. Get a feeling KDB will get a rest considering how important he is

I think KDB more likely than Sterling to be benched considering Jesus is off form, Sterling may play no.9

Who is the best option between Pulisic and Foden for the remainder of the season?
Feel like Pulisic is the safe choice, but surely Foden is likely to get a lot of game time now? City's fixtures look really appealing.

Foden plays for the better team, is cheaper, and arguably more explosive. He's going to be rotated for a couple but Pulisic might not start every game either and also has 2 really difficult fixtures 37-38 whereas City are a sea of green all the way to the end.

I also have De Bruyne, Martial, Fernandez and Saint-Maximin, so I am more inclined to take a risk with Foden (also have a full playing bench too, no fodder).

new article right after I type up an essay, haha. Sorry for the repost!

-- My thoughts on FH choices and rotation for the upcoming GW.

    1. There is no reason for Salah and Mane to be rested. They're playing their 2nd match in 4 days, not their 4th in 11, they're naturally fit blokes, and they had an entire week off before the City game. As a team, Liverpool are playing their first home game since becoming champions, are looking for their first win as champions, are looking for redemption after that god-awful showing yesterday, and have their easiest fixture of the remaining schedule. As individuals, Salah and Mane are both still after the golden boot, are generally hungry for goals and performances, just look at Mane's reaction to being subbed yesterday, man was disgusted. They're going to do well. If they're rotated, it won't be in this game.

    2. There is very little reason for KDB to start vs Southampton. He's started the last 3 and played 90 in both the league matches. Southampton are the worst team in the league when it comes to home form, City don't need KDB. Bernardo and David Silva are well-rested and need minutes, why run KDB into the ground.

    3. There is a 50/50 chance of Sterling starting vs Southampton. He's also started the last 3 but came off slightly earlier yesterday. He's well known for having good stamina and Pep has praised his recovery abilities in the past. He also has an amazing away record and great record vs Southampton. However, Mahrez is going to take a spot on the wing and it's hard to say who's going to play on the other side. If he starts, he should have a field day.

    4. There is no reason for Bruno, Rashford or Martial to not start against Bournemouth. United have one of the kindest schedules of all teams playing Tues - Sat - Thur compared to Thur - Sun - Wed for both City and Liverpool. Fatigue is going to be less of an issue and Bruno had half an hour off against Brighton, with Rash and Martial also being taken off early. The only player who is less assured is Greenwood who played 90 and Ole also hinted at rotation in his presser. Greenwood is a good pick long-term but on a FH for one week, is risky imo.

Hope that helps someone, trying to organise my thoughts as well to really take advantage of the great fixtures this week.

Agree with all of this, thanks. My only extra observation is that if the game at Anfield was in front of a full crowd there would be no way there would be rotation - the first XI would play to take the adulation and, hopefully, put on a show. As it's behind closed doors it's not quite so clear cut, but I think the City result makes rotation less likely and we'll see a pretty standard starting lineup.

I sold Sarr to get Mahrez. have had enough of him, has looked quick but not been close to scoring or assisting except one big chance v Leicester. Watford looking devoid of ideas. I think he could do well v Norwich but was happy to trade to get mahrez.
